A Shocking Experience Windsurfing Maui - Raw and Unfiltered

- In all the year I have windsurfed on Maui I have never experience a moment like this. I almost collided with a kitesurfer at Kanaha Beach Park on the island of Maui. Luckily the board that I am riding has a very tight turning radius which saved us from a very nasty collision. We were both lucky to not get seriously injured.

Wonderful to hear the natural sounds of water and wind and planing board without music laid over top like most windsurfing vids, good job!
Loved watching a great video with no edits that was still riveting to watch. I learned lots from watching your techniques too.
Your Windsurfing wave-board actions shown from upon a wave-board were enjoyable and exciting to see and hear, and I really felt like it was me performing them as I go on a high whilst either watching or practicing the same myself.
excellent. feels like I am sailing. Really miss Maui.
I don't surf or wind surf but love watching your videos. When me and my wife go to Maui we spend time at Ho'okipa watching you guys. Will be there in November 2024 and was there last year. Been to Maui 8 times in 10yrs and will spend good part of the day there watching. Best of luck my friend.
Awesome, maybe I’ll see you at the beach in November. Come say hi if you see a tall guy with a white helmet and a camera stuck to the front of it… that will be me.
Love your heli-tacks! Reminds me that I should practice them more on the wave-gear.. :)
Nice playful waves. I'm impressed
Yah Glenn! Stumbled on this clip. Hi:). Ripping. And yah that kiter www asleep at the wheel or maybe doesn’t really know what’s up 😮. Glad no one got hurt.
Love watching these sessions
Tnx from Chile, such cool vid and level mate
And very cool design n colours on your board
living life like it is supposed to be lived!
Anyone blaming the kiteboarder, and citing "sailing based" rules is wrong. NONE of that applies once you are in the line-up. Once you are in the waves, it is surfing right of way rules, and the windsurfer was riding the wave, doing bottom turns and cut backs. He had the wave. The kiteboarder was essentially charging into the line up blind, from the back side.
Can you explain the terms "line up", "bottom turn" and "cut back" to a non-native speaker? Also, here in Germany, there is only one set of rules that applies to all. In the US, you have 2 sets of rules?
@@ferocious_rLine up is where the waves are rideable and breaking. It comes from being on shore and looking out at surf coming towards the beach. The waves form lines parallel to the beach. If you are not in the lineup, you are either inside or outside.
A bottom turn is when you are riding the wave towards the beach and do a downwind turn back into the wave. It's called a bottom turn because you're literally at the bottom of the wave when you start executing it.
Once you get to the top of the wave again, you do a cut back, which is a turn that sends you back in your original direction. The best feeling ever is hitting the lip of the breaking wave and cutting back. It literally smacks you back 180° and sends you flying down the wave again. Very addicting.
BTW, shooter7a meant to say "blaming the windsurfer" ... not "kiteboarder".
@@wallymcguire2033 Thank you for those very pictureful explanations ... made it possible for me to actually grasp what people are talking about! Wishing to at some point in my future be able to experience windsurfing at sea 🙂
@@ferocious_r The first time you go wave sailing you will be addicted for life. For me, it started a yearly visit to Maui for 22 years in a row! As Kelly Slater once said about surfing, it's like being in the Mafia. Once you're in, you're in for life. 😁
finally another one of your fantastic videos! nice shredding!
Looks sick! One day i gotta go there.
Nice rides!! I'm learning a lot watching your videos!! Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Fantastic video! Thanks for shooting, shredding and sharing!
love this thank you so much
uoooo.... a second before the disaster 😂😂😂😂, very fantastic video 🤙🤙🤙
Hermosa esa luna , gran ola,. Un placer ver este video. Navegar como si estuviera ahi. Gracias!
beautiful vid! - thanks for sharing :)
Very cool session, like your videos!
Damn that was freaking close. good that nothing happend. Years ago I sailed over a kiteboard that was in the water. destoyed the board and my fin.
At least the place isn’t crawling with kiters - I sailed in The Netherlands last weekend. Kiting is the biggest group there, kites crashing next to you, sailing downwind out when you are on the wave,…freaking funky! I am glad my home spots in Cornwall have far fewer of them!
Cornwall great place to live and surf despite crazy tides and currents! I love it.
It can sometimes be crazy, I always avoid the busy spots with hundreds of people. Spot I go to has ten people surfing on an average day.
Even at some of the lakes here in Germany it feels like the kiters should be limited to some of them to leave space for the other water sports...
Sick board paint 🎉
I was wondering how the kiters and windsurfers co-existed out there and now I see your close call of the kiter crash. I retired many years ago when wind surfing was the only option out there. Now you have lots of other riders out there with kite lines. Wow.
good lesson
Great videos I love Kanaha
Are the conditions in Maui always so nice? I really want to surf in the waves like you do but don't know any forgiving spots.
In Fall and Spring time the wave conditions (wind+waves) are pretty reliable on Maui. In winter there are waves pretty much every day but not always enough wind. Kanaha is the perfect break for learning and advancing your wave sailing skills.
@@koav thx
03:39 - dude needs glasses or something. Just unbelievable how asleep some folks are. Glad you never collided!
He is riding upwind. The windsurfer coming from Windward and has to give way to leeward. Does no one stick to the right of way rules?
@@kitingChris wrong. The rider closest to the critical section of the wave has right of way. Educate yourself mate.
@@kitingChris it's not sailing rules when they're in the line-up, but rather the surfing rules... He was doing the wave and had no visibility as to who's coming from his back. The kitesurfer was either asleep or had no idea about rules on the waves.
Not so much wind, but beautiful...it is not the same as my spot from France (Monteynard 's lake, Grenoble) our local spot. The waveriders go to Carro (near Marseille) 🤙
Looked like you guys were on a similar tack and you made an erratic turn into his lane. Glad no one got hurt. Wind looks epic!
Upwind guy riding the wave has priority. The only higher priority is someone heading out because they have more risk. If you are riding the wave you have to avoid them. In this case the kiter was both downwind and caught it late. He was in the wrong. If you are on a wave together, the onus is on the downwind rider to leave enough space and not interfere. It's not unusual to have the upwind rider bear off and push on you to make clearance and then use the wave to cutback so they have extra room to ride.
I love how there are still more sails than kites and wings at this spot (and hopefully Ho'okipa too). Hope it stays that way 🙏
There is an FAA mandated exclusion zone that restricts where kiters can sail. It's 1 mile wide and 2 miles long, extending from the end of the runway at Kahului. It covers almost all of Uppers and the upper section of Lowers. It's hard to tell exactly where this kiter was but he likely had to sail through the edge of the exclusion zone to get to where he was. That's a big no-no and can lead to fines and revocation of the FAA certificate granting the exemption. I'm pretty sure he was far enough upwind that he shouldn't have even been there in the first place. The FAA can rescind the certificate at any time for any reason which is why most kiters stick to Kite Beach.
I’ve been to Maui five times in July over the years and I’ve never seen this much swell at Kandaha. Very jealous 👍
Kanaha can get huge in a high surf advisory and the wave is awesome. When Ho'okipa gets too big and starts closing out, even the pro sailors come down to Kanaha. July is flat as can be. You really need to be there in the fall and the spring to get the best combination of surf and wind. Winter has bigger surf but the wind is very iffy.
How do you choose between sailing at Ho'okipa versus Kanaha? Wind or swell direction? More of your friends are at either place? Busyness? Just curious -- love love love the videos. 🏄♂
@jeffreywilkinson1471 Thank you for your comment! Choosing between Ho'okipa and Kanaha usually depends on the wave size and wind direction. For instance on the day this video was filmed Ho'okipa was giant with the channel closing out. I opted for Kanaha because I push myself and have FUN instead of sailing to survive and avoid going on the rocks.
Ho'okipa has a rocky point and a strong current pulling you into it. Even the pros get caught inside and trash their gear. So it all depends on the conditions and your personal comfort level for buying new stuff. Big surf and light wind at Ho'okipa can be challenging. Kanaha still has great waves and it's a lot safer.
Lovely Glen.. hope to see you soon..
For those of you new to wave sailing the guy riding down the line, which is to the right at Kanaha, has right of way over a guy riding the wave upwind. We all seek the DTL experience and the "rules" are set up to protect that. Windsurfer could have gone below the kiter like he did earlier but kiter may change his path and you still get a collision.
I'm a windsurfer, kiter foiler etc. Fortunately my local isn't crowded so no rules just mates having fun together. I'm always going to give way to someone closest to the pocket 🤙
I've also thrown a kite loop without realizing a friend was right behind me. My kite went around his and we both ended up swimming. A bit of chill and understanding goes a long way 😊
Still love your videos!
what kind of jybing is this? it looks like a low-power turn where you are turning the board under your feet!
Called a spin jibe I think
Could also be called a snap jibe.
@bolleSailor - Yes.
Tricky to master, on tiny waveboard.
(Glen is a humble master at these and his tacks both)
what is the advantage in the new shorter boards with no rocker really trying to figure it out
The boards that I am riding are pretty average in length for a modern board. My newest board has Marcilio Browne’s rocker which is flatter than my usual rocker which provides more down the line speed and makes it easier to catch waves. It’s always a very fine balance between speed and turn ability. The modern boards look flatter than they really are due to the additional volume the shaper hides in the front half of the board.
@@koav Thank you Sir very interesting, I have a very old Goya one with tons of rocker. looking to upgrade. But not sure which way to go Simmer Fly wave or goya one are my first thoughts. Thanks again
Woow.. the most amazing video 🤙🏻 you stayed til night 😅 PS did you find that kiter later?!?
@costawindsurfchannel1844 Thank you! One of my favourite things to do is to sail until it's too dark to see the waves. I could not have even identified him as it all happened so quickly. Only after watching the footage did I know what he looked like.
Hey amazing video, what camera do you use ?
Thanks, I use GoPro Hero10.
I have been told that in Hawaii there is a precise policy to keep surfers, windsurfers and kiters separated both in places and in time. Is this wrong or does it apply only to specific spots? Thanks
On Maui, kiters n windsurfers have to wait til 11 am to launch. Surfers, fisherman, and divers have the morning.
At Ho'okipa, windsurfers and kiters can sail only at "the Point" (not Middles or Pavils, where it's surfers only)
- and can only ride there if there are fewer than ten surfers out there.
And kiters can only ride there if there are less than ten windsurfers out.
At Lowers Kanahā, the 11:00 rule applies, but the rest is a free for all. (as seen here!)
Try the OR. Cost. Better wind, better waves in the summer. Freezing cold.
No crowds At All!
I love the OR coast. Way back I made a POV video from a session at Cape Sebastian.
Not sure who had right of way on the near collision. From the rest of the video it looks like the peak is behind you and you were following the forming wave? so the kiteboarder most likely needed to give way. As a kiteboarder I can say that it could have been avoided - looks like he got caught in the moment - unless he is following the break towards you . Either way I am always cautious on the water with other kiteboarders and windsurfers especially when they are on the backhand or a wave is involved. Some get super possessive and are determined to ride that wave start to finish - even though there are plenty of other waves coming.
Great video as always, do you have any tip in order o prevent deck dings from he mast smacking the board ? this board looks sick!
@Drpaul699 Thank you! I don't know of any tricks to prevent dings on your board. Most sails have a decent mast pad which seems to work well for me.
I use a mast board protector e.g. from Ion, it has saved the nose of my boards a number of times for sure. As koav mentions, the integrated mast pad in the sail should protect the deck around the mast base.
If you are getting pitched over the front of your board, let go of the boom, so your weight isn't being transferred from the mast into the board. The sail and mast on its own, will usually not cause a dent. If you are hanging onto it or get slammed when you're hooked in, that's usually when it happens.
The conditions and the spot looks just super beautyfull.
How have you almost collaps with the kitesurfer who as the priority cause he was surfing the wave ?
I don't understand that moment.
It was a right hand wave and the windsurfer was closer to where it was breaking, so the windsurfer has right of way. The kite was down the line in other words.
Not rallye agree.
When se wind surfer fell, you can see others riders going from right to the left on the wave.
To me he just turn without tchecking.
Also the kiter was downwind of the windsufer, the Guy upwind is responsable of the People downwind.
@@bourdinsimon2111No. absolutely incorrect. Windsurfer has the right of way as the upwind rider. Anybody who has wavesailed in Maui knows this. It's been the same rules for decades.
What cam you use?
GoPro Hero10
Yearsterday, same shit happened to me. I was waiting for the wave to form and just before going for my bottom turn an effing kitesurfer jibed into the wave and cut me off. I lost my mind😂😅
Yep. Clueless about the rules that are well established and have been around for decades.
As a windsurfer and kitesurfer, I'd say that one was on you. Need to look before you turn. When I am kiting in crowded places like that, e.g. Sunset Beach in Cape Town, I make a point of staying away from the windsurfers as you never know when they will turn or when they will fly down the line.
yup. from my couch he was to windward and port tack. No way he was stand-on course. should have edited that out lol.
He is riding the wave down the line while the kiter is going upwind. The kiter is in the wrong for sure!
@@Woxen65not agree.
The one Who have the priority is the person Who ride au wave, whatever if it's à windsurfer, kitesurfer or wingsurfer.
there are different kind of rules on waves than specified in colreg, whoever is on the wave first has the right of way, if there are more sailors riding the wave the one who is first on the wave (from where it's closing) has the right of way
When the wind is up (no prone surfers) with breaking rideable waves, Lowers Kanaha is a down the line (rights) break. No sailor or kiter should be up pushing up the line / upwind in the breaking section. The windsurfer was in the right here. The kiter was clueless, not aware of the situation, and in the wrong. Glad no one got hurt. I can see how the windsurfer was surprised and not expecting that situation.
Wow, that near miss with that kiter at ~4 minutes in is a perfect illustration of how dangerous they are to windsurfers and themselves. That guy would have been very badly hurt, maybe killed if the windsurfer didn't react the exact way he did. Thankfully, most kiters seem to be transitioning to wing foiling.
3:38 did you not steer right into him? i don't understand why you're calling him dumb
Kiteboarder wasn't following the well established rules of sailing in surf. The upwind rider has priority and the downwind rider has to stay clear.
creaming it all the way to the moonlight 🤙
Haha so funny to see 95% of the people here never rode a breaking wave circulation. Flat water riders commenting the windsurfer was in the wrong 😂
Yes, the rules are very clear. Upwind rider has priority and the downwind rider has to stay clear. if I was on a wave with someone else, I always tried to give them a good 20 yards between us and I would keep my eye on them if they were getting closer so I could bear off and give them room to ride.
well, he came from the right... ;)
Wow that guy should have been sent in…..
Yup that was a big no-no.
Glad no injuries.
He may have not have had the correct knowledge of the spot (riding upwind) but from my couch think you would have avoided with a shoulder check pre turn.
Anyways , you’re a better sailor than me, so there’s that too.
Upwind rider has the right of way, and the downwind rider has to provide enough clearance to not interfere with their ride. It's been this way on Maui for decades.
Surfing between kite surfers is very dangerous....
Totally the bikers fault!
You were looking at that guy for like 10 seconds before you turned right into him, idk who's dumb here.. and it's not the only time you don't pay attention to others in that video
Upwind rider has priority. Downwind rider has to provide enough clearance to not interfere.
He Does pay attention to other riders in the video (and in real life!)
: sails smoothly around them
Kitesurfer had right of way, they were riding the with the wave moving predictably and you aggressively jibed into them without looking. I don't know how you could look back at this footage and come to the conclusion you weren't 100% at fault.
The upwind rider always has priority except for sailors heading out. If you are down wind from someone, the onus is on you to make enough clearance so you're not interfering. I've been windsurfing on Maui for 20 years and that's the rules for riding waves.
Nope. You are 100% wrong.
Wow that was close. Kiters in our area tend to ride in there own areas. The really good kiters I sail with have come from windsurfing backgrounds and are very aware of their lines and surroundings.
Yep, often the way with kiters. They seem to have no spatial awareness.
They are supposed to be riding down at Kite Beach, not in the middle of the lineup at Lowers. The FAA has an exclusion zone for kiters due to the risk to airplanes taking off from the airport. I'm pretty sure it goes from Sprecks to the end of Lowers but it may have changed since I was last there. But that's why Kite Beach exists.
Whatever the actual FAA rules, there's loads of kiters riding Lowers break. (And wing foilers).
Which is fine, imho. But, All riders there no matter what rig they're on should be thinking of Waveriding rules.
