- Sugar Plum Fairy Dance from Nutcracker.
Casse-Noisette
Coreography by Vasily Medvedev & Yuri Burlaka (2011)
Performed by Marian Walter, Iana Salenko
I like the aparent simplicity of this coreography, how beautiful can be this single dance.
I love her dancing. She’s my favorite Sugar Plum Fairy. I love that she doesn’t spin endlessly at the end, but provides interesting and graceful movements that make her look like a doll come to life.
She is so controlled in her movements and so smooth and artistic.
Iana is one of the best ballerinas of our time. This performance is absolutely exquisite. I don't know about her training background, but it looks to me that she somehow has the best of both Russian and Western European schools of ballet's styles. I so very adore this. She has the generosity, the grand movements, the flexibility, the lines of a Russian ballerina (especially notice the positioning of her hips at 0:30), but somehow also the careful and delicate footwork of an etoile at Paris Opera House. Amazing.
Девочка просто прелестная Так старается так мила очаровательна
She trained in Ukraine. She was invited to Vaganova at 14, but her mother didn't let her go.
Yana Salenko is Ukrainian, graduated at Donetsk college of choreography in Ukraine, then being prime ballet dancer at Ukraine Natioanl Opera, then moved to Germany.
The choreography is, more or less, the original as created by Lev Ivanov for the premiere in 1892. The only obvious variation from it is the coda.
I agree, it's a very unsatisfying ending. A rapid sequence of piqué turns or coupés jetés is more usual. This version isn't an improvement!
such a good ballerina! but we can't say the same about this choreography
It is a bit weird to watch it on UA-cam, we should dress with a robe, sit on a vintage chair and holding a fan to enjoy this.
@@aw3271 Looking at the costumes, is this a reconstruction of the original production?
Uh-huh.
The dress is so pretty
This production is a recreation of the original St.Petersburg production. To see this set alive again is beyond wonderful. The detail is unsurpassed by any other production, down to the tiniest details including bumble bees. It is a masterpiece
Yes; the set is incredible!
When I first saw it, I got shivers and couldn't help but say aloud "now THAT'S a set!"
This production and choreography has nothing to do with the original production from St. Petersburg.
More specifically, it has many of the original 1892 sets and costumes, but there are a few differences from the actual original St. Petersburg production. E.g. the dancing dolls in Act I are different in this reconstruction from the Colombine, Harlequin, Vivandière, and the Soldier in the original version.
Do you know if the entire production is available to view anywhere? I’d love to see the whole thing.
@@DuchessRococoPuff Well, the video of the production is available on DVD and Blu-Ray (though which copy to get might depend on which region you're in; I'd recommend checking the video region code and video format to see if it's in NTSC or PAL, to see which region the copy might work on). It's also available on some streaming services like Vimeo, I believe (but it may cost a bit money to rent or purchase it).
What a beautiful stage, it's almost distracting, and I love her costume
She saved this choreography with technique and grace. Amazing dancer! Sometimes bringing back old, doesn’t mean it’s good.
It is a joy to watch a master of an art in performance.
My favorite ballet and Christmas story.
This is a fantastic production of The Nutcracker, and Salenko is just unbelievable!
Best ballerina of this generation! Love you, Iana Salenko!
Grace.
Poise.
Elegance.
All made to seem effortless.
Yes, this is indeed European culture.
This is my favourielte version.
wow!! she s is amazing! such a good technic and such à difficult variation !!
Очень хорошее исполнение. Очень красивая пачка, молодец художник по костюмам, очень идёт Саленко. Она такая нежная в ней.
I thought this dance was near perfect until she didn’t do the pique manege at the end. That’s always my favorite part that I look forward to :/
What minute?
Exactly what I came to say!
Guys, I’m pretty sure this is a historical reconstruction of the original 19th century staging. The costumes, sets and choreography are done accordingly.
I love that part too! Some dancers even cut out the last part altogether so at least she did the second part, ya know.
Mirabili questi passi quasi ovattati sul piano di ballo ed eccezionali quelli in eundo sulle punte.Grazia e levità fluente e flessuosa di piena gradevolezza motile nell'esecutivita ' di questa BRAVISSIMA ballerina. Bighin Giulio Renzo
How does she make walking backwards that beautiful
Beautiful. Such amazing talent
The performance is out of this world, her movements are just so smooth and graceful but the costume is not what the sugar plum fairy should wear, the tutu needs to be a little harder and painted with either rose gold/gold/light pinks with stones that make the ballerina shine a little more
it is a more historically accurate costume, when the nutcracker originally premiered, ballerinas did not wear a flat, pancake-style tutu the way they do nowadays, and i'm not saying i think it's prettier, just providing some context lol
The white isn't too bad
I was actually thinking that this is prettier than what she normally wears. I know the flatter tutu is the more classical style, but I’ve always preferred the softer tutus, even for sugarplum (and ESPECIALLY for Clara when she does this dance)
Wow I really like this one, the way she moves is so interesting and maybe otherworldly? Idk why people don't like it?
I love it, but I’m an outsider to this world. I’m not a ballerina. One of the main reasons I love it is because it’s so different from all the other Sugar Plum Fairy dances. I especially love her hip movements at the end, and that she doesn’t spin endlessly.
I used to take ballet classes, and still like this form of dance. Some of my favorite ballet music is for the sugar plum fairy. I was trying to get it playing, and one reason is it is making me feel a bit better even though I got a very rude email from someone I do not even know (I mentioned on the internet that a historical figure had acted in a very immoral fashion part of their life, so someone recently DURING THE PANDEMIC messaged me that (paraphrased) this historical person was great their whole life and called me an insulting name.)This type of music has a very powerful affect on me to be able to help with a mood this bad.
BEAUTIFUL DANCING
Lana, Salenko, you're the best sugar plum fairy I've seen! Your beauty and performing are at the top for this role! Thanks a million for the super dancing! Peter.
you should watch nina kaptsova's version
See what I told you
Alina Somova
So many wonderful actors/performers! Too many count.
Half of you guys are so judgement “tHaT cHeOrEoGrApHy WaS hOrRiBle” no dancer or ballerina is perfect and if you can’t understand that she’s trying her best then you must be a really low person, leave her alone, if you don’t like it then leave 🙄 other than that this performance was amazing ❤️❤️
correct
The choreography does her talent and skill absolutely no justice. The ending is lackluster without the pique manege. It's hardly Iana's fault, but there's a reason why many prefer when she dances The Nutcracker with the Royal Ballet versus her own company.
I don't see people critiquing the ballerina?? It's one thing to think the choreo is bad, but everyone's aware she has incredible skill and dances beautifully
Dead right, we all like different dancers and variations for our own reasons. Choreographers change things slightly not always to ones likeing. But for gawd sake stop thinking you are bloody Ninette de valoise. Too much stress on technical terms and less on simple observations, not everyone is familiar with such terms and it dont always matter. If you appreciate ballet that much just frigin enjoy it unless of course it is really crap but that doesn't happen unless you're potty enough to attempt romeo and juliet on the table at an office bash🙄
Wow this is so beautiful.
Lanaaaa ... stunning as always
that music is like painfully slow
Finlee Thompson I agree! So uninteresting.
I simply hate this choreography. No personality, no nuance, zero appeal to the story.....
Isn't the background the original design from the first release? :00
shes so good👯
I simply cannot believe her feet. I'm stunned.
I love it.
So graceful, how fairy@
It is lit just amazing✨
Best Sugar Plum Fairy Ever, after Efremova. Great ano original coda.
The performance is different from other ballerinas. She doesn't spin around fast like the others but good all round i suppose!
Delicate😍♥️
WOW!!
I need this music someone help!! I can’t find it anywhere, this tempo is unique!
I would have said Ivanov until the tag at the end (which a lot of companies just eliminate). I actually liked it, although yes, used to grand manege with pique and emboite turns (maybe a few soutenus as well). I liked the way she handled the pivots from 2nd to 4th and back, like she was sharing a secret with the audience. I only stumbled upon her by accident wanted to see Ivan Vasiliev do (I think) Corsaire at one of the Dance Open perfs and immediately fell in love. My impression is that she's not well known outside parts of Europe and Russia, and that's a shame. She's not the same but she's easily the equal of some better known ballerinas like Nela Nunez (whom I worship and adore). Her dancing has great character, and if you've ever seen what I might call her signature move (fouette sequences of double, triple, single, rinse and repeat), you know she has absolutely sterling technique. Thx for posting. Do you have the grand adage or the coda (notice Marian Walter in the credits)?
Marian Walter is her husband.
Red m&m: ow.
Yellow m&m: so you think Santa will like these red, and green m&ms.
Red m&m:I don't know I never met a guy ahhh he does exist.
Santa claus:they do exist.
Santa claus, and red m&m faint.
Yellow m&m: uhhh santa.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
There's I don't understand: In the story of this version, the original version, they made Clara the Sugar Plum Fairy. But I read that in 1892 they were danced by two different ballerinas!
They were. This version in many ways tried to be as much a recreation as the original (same sets and costumes, as much of the original choreography as possible) and yet they still made some big story changes... For example Clara becomes the Sugar Plum Fair (and the Nutcracker Prince becomes the oddly named Prince Cocaluche who were different characters in the original. Droselmeyer comes to the Kingdom of the Sweets in this version. Clara's mom wears the earlier Sugar Plum costume at the start of Act II...)
@Anjon, could you post the full video? That would be so nice to see!
I'm glad you, enjoyed, and definitely is worth watch this full performance. Sadly I lost the full recording among other data... :s
Podria haber expresion artística mas hermosa que esto?
Subd & liked ❤️💚💜💙🧡 bravo 👌:))
my lover.i love you.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌹
It’s like a swans
This is a the simplified version. Not easy though
🙌👏👏👏👏❤
Beautiful set and costumes but what happen to the choreography? It can not decide which part of the melody to sync with and throws the timing off in many parts. I would have to say Nina Kaptsova's Sugar Plum dance is much better but yet done in front of a weak set (background).
Recreation of the original 1892 sets and costumes. I like the choreography for the most part--which is as close as possible to the 1892 Ivanov notation.
Russian style includes NOT hitting every count on the count, but finessing between counts and playing with the timing. The music thus becomes, not the master of the dancer, but a conversational voice in the production: the dance becomes the main thing. This was one thing that made Balanchine and Stravinsky such good collaborators, they already both had this awareness in mind. Marching to the beat is for soldiers. Dancers can be more nuanced.

sing to me baby.
Ahh.
Вряд ли я видела что-то лучше этого
dance for me.
Music too slow and I do not fancy the choreography.
Let´s be real, how many of us started ballet just because of Barbie and the costumes?
Just me? ok
yeah, the choreography's awful and that really sucks because literally everything else is amazing
That’s just rude you know what you’re the sucker you just suck
Lucy Ayala It is the truth tho! She is AMAZING!😍 but the choreography? Eeeeh....not so sure about that.....she is REALLY graceful tho💖
Yeah, I'm not fond of it either. I wonder what she could do with the Vainonen version. (ua-cam.com/video/36tkdGAMYlw/v-deo.html)
Something I’ve experienced over the years in my dance career is: NO👏🏼 DANCER👏🏼 IS 👏🏼 PERFECT 👏🏼. I understand if the choreography is horrible or what not but at the end of the day its them trying, considering the fact that pointe can be difficult on the feet as well. I’m not trying to come on here to disprove you and all but still it’s disrespectful and hurtful wether it’s the truth or not, would you hate to have someone say “your whatever is awful and horrible”
She has perfect movements but unfortunately She doesn't express anything, at least in this piece. She's too "cold".
Отвратительная хореография.
Хореограф-постановщик страдает тугоухостью. Или вообще глухой. И с эстетикой танца не знаком.
I'm a little surprised at how hated the original choreography is (though I admit the Coda is the weakest part)
Какой ужас...на нечего не похожит етот танец.....Simply disaster!
this is boring
Get a life!
Goodbye then, don’t let that door hit you in the ass on the way out :)
@@javachip9612 you're a bully
@@yandynestorperez7501you too
She's perfect but the choreography is really ugly... eek.
Are those gargouillades?
Yes!
I don't think I've ever seen that step look so beautiful as when she does them!
Agree!!!
It's not a gargouillade. It's just a random step in the choreography. For gargouillades you have to do rond de jambes en l'air with both legs(one and then the other)
paula tamara mohamad Right. Pretty sure thats what she did.
