As a dancer I really hate how ballet and other styles of dance have become an extension/trick show. The first dance radiates with technique, grace and story telling techniques. Today, if you can’t do 10 perfect pirouettes and lift your leg past your head you simply aren’t good enough. Ballet is more than an acrobatic experience
I completely agree! I often feel like the musicality and storytelling are lacking. I am not a dancer, I was trained as a classical musician, and i often feel disappointed as the performance is more about how much powerful or flexible the movements are, rather than interpreting the music with your bodies.
@Hola well when you think about it, ballet is story telling. With out the sets and costumes, the dance moves and music convey the emotions and actions in the story. No narrator needed.

Definitely. Some dancers look.more like gymnasts. A lot have lost the ability to have their own personality. I do love Nunez cos although wonderful technic has beautiful facial expressions and is her own person with lovely epaulment.
The first dancer is able to be so expressive with the aid of the slower tempo. I can't imagine why it's been speeded up over the years, to the obvious detriment of what the dancer can do within that tempo constraint.
I don’t think the tempo is actually slower. It seems slower because she uses more “hang time” to transition in and out of each movement, creating a real flow. The other dancers’ movements are more sudden.
And i know nothing about ballet but to me the face that the first girl is ever so slightly off beat makes it seem less rushed, the others are more on beat and makes it feel faster
With the first dancer everything makes absolute sense. I always thought this dance was messy; everytime I watched it, it felt like it was off beat. But not with that first ballerina. It just made sense.
Right! I think over time the song was sped up and it doesn’t make sense. I’ve always thought that it was weirdly off beat, but the first dancer made it make look great since she had more control and the tempo was slower
@@savanna2932 yes definitely. Especially when hearing the older ver then skipping to the newer ver it’s clearly sped up whereas the older ver is slower and takes on more grace and just fits better compared to now
Oh gosh finally I understand why Ballerina is always off beat and unsynchronized. I thought I am being rude and not open minded because I don't know much about Ballerina culture but after your explanation and watching the first ballerina, It does make sense.
One thing about the sugar plum fairy that has always befuddled me was musicality. There are so many fun moments in the music and I couldn’t always clearly understand the connection between the choreo and it - until now. Efremova danced it the way I’ve always wanted to see it and really married the choreo and the music. And her bourrées… I just LOVE how she used them actually move across the stage and take up space!!!
You are so right. Her three little jumps in time with the characteristic three repeated notes in the music were so enchanting and 'right'. If there isn't the marriage between the music and its interpretation those little jumps can become just empty gestures. I've seen performances where they actually become grotesque and comical.
The way you always wanted to see it was a primitive idea of choreography where every note demands a corresponding step or gesture?? You woulda loved all the forgotten snoozefests from the 19th century
Not a ballet dancer here but a physiotherapist. Efremova had more muscle mass in her lower extremities which allowed both the fluid movements & the power to “hold” her joints in various positions for longer lengths of time without tiring which enabled her to match the music better. The evolution is of the preferred, slimmer body “type” over one with more weight due to muscle mass.
For me Russian ballet is the best in the world. I would so love them to add in top professional physiotherapists and nutritionists to their ballet staff and watch their ballet dancers become much healthier and watch how their performances are taken to even more incredible heights.
Efremova was trained in the Soviet Ballet Schools. That is why their technique and artistry was the best. What I find interesting is if Efremova was thinner, she would still be a good contender for today's artists. That says a lot.
I am not a dancer but I was watching that thinking the same thing, her muscles make her moves more stable and precise. The other ones feel almost like paper or like a feather they don’t feel like a person exacting moves with their body. I almost feel like with each move your body grounds differently to the earth and it was like their bodies weren’t grounding during the moves with the last two women ❤ Ballet is so beautiful
Your comment makes the most sense to me. The first ballerina has the most “hang time” in her poses, and also in the transitions into and out of the poses, which makes the whole dance feel so much more organic and human. The other dancers were more robotic, like, fast-fast-POW! Fast, fast, POW! whereas the first dancer’s movements have a more “roly-poly” quality. In belly dancing, there is an idea that you should move like you’re in a ball of goo. Nothing should be sudden. You should spend as much time and energy and attention getting in and out of your poses as you spend in them. Plus, her stage presence was just captivating. It seems like she might be the more mature artist of the three.
Interestingly Efremova, the first dancer had the best technique, more controlled, more graceful and more in time with the music. This is not an evolution but rather a comparison of different dancers.
Well said! I agree completely. Efremova had lovely legato and epaulement. The other two dancers were both good. The compilation is a comparison, not an evolution, which implies good to better or best.
I absolutely, completely agree. Sugarplum is hard to do. Very hard. I’ve seen so many videos and films of excellent ballerinas perform it and there were only a few who really nailed it. Lauren Cuthbertson being one of them. Maybe it’s because a Christmas ballet has to be magical and the fairy has to become real - even with difficult choreography. She has to be so delicate, soft, perfect and controlled. That is really hard. Also, there are hundreds of little girls watching and looking for this magical creature to be real - it’s the first ballet most children will see. I think that’s added pressure.
Yes, she brings out the fairy like noone. Number 3 reminded me weirdly of swanlake. The arm movements are too fluid and not accentuated and abrupt enough to make it look as funny and cute as number 1.
I’m not a dancer, but I love seeing The Nutcracker every Christmas. It wasn’t until watching this video of the first dancer that I remembered that the Sugar Plum Fairy was supposed to be a toy. It was a much more interesting and magical performance from the first dancer with her precise, stiff, movements than the last one who was too smooth.
Exactly ! The first 2 dancers are like little toys, Christmas tree decorations. Such a wonderful impression! The last one is more like alive person. Beautiful too, but without this uncanny feeling of an alive doll. Probs modern day audience can’t get it and feel uncomfortable idk so sad that everything is focused on the visual side and glamour these days
googled the first ballerina to find more performances from her, but i also found out she recently passed in 2020...it appears she was also highly respected by many

As someone who knows nothing about ballet and has never seen a live performance and only watched this out of boredom and mild curiosity- the first one is the best. She’s by far the most on beat and her tutu dances in sync with her. It’s so pretty and mesmerizing to watch.
The other two are technically very good but more staccato if that's a thing. Yes, the first was the best, her personality and acting shone through, she was more believable.
All three dancers performed beautifully but the first dance by Efremova was absolutely magical. Her fluid movements beautifully matched the music and it felt vibrant even on black and white film. I don't want to put down the following two dancers because they obviously worked hard and danced better than I ever could even in my wildest dreams. However, as time goes on they seemed progressively more mechanical and too perfect in their movements. It was like watching marionette puppets perform rather than a living doll like the sugar plum fairy is supposed to be. Both were undoubtedly well done on a technical aspect but they felt empty...
The first dancer’s video reminds me of stop motion animation and truly feels like you’re watching a toy dancing across the stage. What impressive muscle control she had to express that!
Want to see a completely different performance of this is to watch Alicia Markova dancing it old footage with music added but my God how different it is. So much more too it and she is so light on her feet and although tiny is not like a stick insect. A lot of modern arrangements are far too stiff and correct for my liking. No.1 is the best for me, much more natural, if you can call any sugar plum natural😂.
I know nothing about ballet. But to me, the first performance was breathtaking. Slow pace, not rushed like the others. You can feel the emotion and passion she puts into her performance. Her pace is also more in tune with the music.
The music in new versions is sped up! Did you notice? It is visisble that other two dancers were trying to make it in time for the next move and the next one etc but because it's sepd up - they just rush and you can clearly see that, espcially when in comparison to the first dancer.
Not a dancer and didn't know much about ballet at all, but the first one, Efremova, left the biggest impression for me. I reallly love how she's really in tune with the music, and I dunno whether this was intentional or in choreo or not, but holy, in some parts, even her tutu fluttered in sync with the music, it's sooo pleasing 💕💕
This is how it was meant to be danced. It always looks messy and off beat to me, until I saw her perform. Now it looks like it actually goes with the music.
Yes, even the costuming was better. It was much simpler, yet made to move in such a way that it added to her beautiful, delicate, fairy-like performance.
Efremova is not dancing as the Sugar Plum Fairy. She looked like she IS the Sugar Plum Fairy ❤️. She seems utterly consumed in her art...not playing a part but she has internalized it so well and has such amazing technique to express this artistry. The way she played the Sugar Plum Fairy is more ethereal and magical because she doesn't look like shes trying to please people or perform. She looks like she just IS inherently magical and letting us see the magic and being herself. The other two looked like performers who were too conscious.
This the difference between the dancers of yesteryear who portrayed the role as they performed , o the dancers of todaywhoshow more athleticism to artistry.
Not a dancer but musician, is incredible how the first dancer was following the music, her feet moves and body follows the music compass, her body express the music language, delicate notes delicate steps, strong notes more pirouettes and jumps. The first one is much better.
The first dancer maintained a straight line with her spine and only moved her head and arms…perfection!! Definitely think character and interpretation was lacking in the others!

В версии Вайнонена это партия Маши, а не феи. Здесь Светлана Ефремова из угловатой девочки расцветает в принцессу.☺ Обратите внимание. Партия начинается с мелких топотушек. В середине журчит время. И вот Маша пытается уже размашисто вышагивать от бедра.
Непонятно только, что этим видео хотели сказать. Классика во все времена остаётся классикой и видео танца балерины в 60-м г. , у нее более отточенные движения и большая лёгкость присутствует.
Efremova, the first one, is pure perfection. As in other comments, Sugarplum musicality is dificult and with many dancers it does not make sense and the whole thing ends up feeling akward to watch, kind of clumsy. Efremova perfect technique and musicality makes it a delight, if you don´t know ballet, itwill seem as if she is not doing much, but if you know ballet you know what she is doing is absolutely astonishing. In both cases you will feel mesmerised by this "little" dance.
Don't be ridiculous. I know nothing of ballet and yet I could tell her performance was leaps and bounds beyond that of the following two. You don't have to know ballet to be able to spot that.
@@AdeleiTeillana I don't know why you called me 'ridiculous'. Dancers are incredibly skilled at hiding any kind of injury, and are able to push on (inadvisably imo) through intense pain. I'm not even saying that she was injured, just asking, as I noticed she didn't fully come onto her left foot once or twice in the way she did with her right foot (and again I could be totally wrong). Jumping or hopping en pointe is very sore and there was a lot of that in this solo. My husband incidentally had the same reaction as I did, we were both a bit indifferent when we first watched Efremova, then coming back to her performance after seeing the other two, we were quite entranced and thought it was magical.

As someone who is really into costumes and did help the dance majors make their costumes one year in college, I also noticed the change in costume. The tutu became less & less straight out to form more or a bell shape by the 3rd rendition. Someone may have noted already as the comment section is full of interesting expertise. Thanks for showing us! I’m really excited to take ballet classes as an adult fairly soon. 👏🏻🩰

I love the first one. The grace, the control and most of all: simplisity of her movements made every second feel full. It was like she didn't follow the music, the music followed her. This is why the newer versions looks so messy, cause they have to kick higher, or spin faster to seem more impressive. But simplisity really is beautiful in ballet. It leaves room for so much more feeling and art instead of just tricks and gymnastics.
That first dance was incredible. She was so delicate and graceful it felt so euphoric as she skipped and floated through a field of sugar plums. What extraordinary technique and skill she has. I especially enjoyed watching her retreat, her neck and limbs were so rigid yet appeared so natural. What an amazing artform. Mad respect
I didn't read the title properly, and just sat and watched all of these lovely dancers look ethereal. I understand now that it was meant to be a comparison but as a compilation I thought everyone danced wonderfully

Я бы даже сказала, что первая балерина танцует, а две следующие делают гимнастические упражнения под музыку: поднимают ноги, подпрыгивают... Возможно, они даже лучше ноги задирают и подпрыгивают, но пропадает ощущение волшебного танца. И в силу этого мне непонятно, почему это названо "эволюция"? Гимнастика, даже самая художественная, всё равно гимнастика.
The first dancer! I could just see sugar and snowflakes flowing from her fingertips! That was the first time I've seen that choreography and not thought, wow, those hops must hurt. I just sat back and enjoyed the moment.
Wow... The dancer from the 60s has very refined and expressive dance. It's not even about technicity, it's more about pauses and meaningful phrases expressed through subtle dance movements. I'm not a big expert in ballet, but I either feel it or not. The first one was the best for me.
Former dancer here. It is encouraging to see how many people here recognize that Ms Efremova gave the most artistic and musical performance of the three. The two other dancers do represent represent changes in body type preference and an emphasis on athleticism over musicality and expression that is now in vogue in the ballet world and which unfortunately has fostered a loss of artistry. I hope that as the public can recognize this loss it will one day lead to the pendulum swinging back into the direction of artistry and elegance. Thank-you for posting this comparison. It is very informative.
Мне тоже больше всех советская балерина понравилась. Она как хрустальная кукла на серванте -- динь динь и замерла, очень четко передается это ощущение -- в этом же суть танца, это же всё новогодние игрушки.
Это партия Маши с 1934 года. И действительно девочки очень хрупкие, когда растут. Партия о взрослении девочки. Дети - рождественские игрушки родителей.
I agree that the first was the best embodiment of Sugarplum. All were beautiful, but the first was the epitome, not only in technique, but also in presence and true encompassing of all aspects of this role. I am assuming she was a little older than the other dancers, at this moment of performing, and that might explain some of it. But it makes me want to see what other videos of the first dancer are on UA-cam!!! She seemed to embody a rare gift, along with marvelous training. Thank you for posting!!
Ефремова смотрит на каждый пальчик руки, провожая взглядом руки. Это волшебно. А так же чувство музыкальной фразы позволяет ей быть очень гармоничной. Безусловно две последующие балерины прекрасны, но мне почему-то не хватает этого волшебства Ефремовой.
@@irskri конечно, можно очень технично исполнять балетные партии, а вот если нет души в исполнении, а только техника, тогда можно и в гимнастику, например, податься, или в фигурное катание. Короче, спортом заняться - там техника приветствуется
Фея сахарной сливы в ,,щелкунчике" - фарфоровая статуэтка,по сути игрушка и двигаться должна ,как игрушка с подзаводом. Светлана Ефремова очень точно и технично передала в танце суть своей героини! Браво! У двух последующих балерин я этого образа не увидела.
А я всегда думала, это не игрушка а настоящая Фея, с шариками драже на ножках, которыми она, летая, постукивает по хрустальным бокалам с шампанским и вазочкам с пирожными, по фарфоровым тарелкам, по серебряным вилкам и ложкам на новогоднем столе, пока никто не видит, а услышав приближающихся людей быстренько убегает, и драже на ее ножках выбивают музыкальную дорожку отступления
Ничего не понимаю в балете, но первый танец завораживает, а другие два отставляют равнодушной. У первой балерины такое единение с музыкой и такие движения, хочется пересматривать снова и снова
@@professorpanchenkoи вращаться стали быстрее, и прыгать выше, и ноги выше поднимать, и гнуться, как в гимнастике. Не конкретно в этом танце, а вообще. Шакирова - чудесная балерина, но она ведь уже почти гимнастка.
@@BC-uj4nu, ноги выше/ да. Гнуться сильнее. А вращаться и бегать гораздо медленнее. Проверено на практике. Сами можете сравнить. И Цискаридзе подтверждает это. Сейчас все дети раскоординированны и , соответственно артисты тоже. Но и прогнуться и задрать ногу- тоже есть предел. Это конечная функция.
The first, Efremova, is my favorite by far. There is a delicacy to her performance that fits the music and story. Her arm movements alone are graceful and captivating. Even her facial expression is part of the dance and story. Not really an evolution after her. Thanks for posting and happy holiday!
not a lot of people are talking about how the first one had great cinematography (started out on top, and had thought to framing rather than just put the camera in front), and great costumes (her tutu was puffier and less stiffer and every time she moved, it looked like she herself was a flower)
These are all very true, but not really impactful enough to skew the opinion. The dance overall is much more controlled when Efremova performed. Even the pace is better.
Efremova’s technique is rock solid. Her turns are like a metronome, with no finessing the final turn. Yet. I prefer the ethereal quality and bountiful bourrées of the following ballerina.
Same. Everything else about Evremova I was nodding going "looks strong" and then she'd start one of those turns as the music descends and it wouldn't quite line up

Все восхищаются балеринами. А я восхищаюсь Петром Ильичем Чайковским, создавшим такие нетленные музыкальные шедевры. Сколько бы я не слушала музыку Чайковского, всегда мурашки по коже.

There is no fault with the dancers in my opinion. Just an interpretation of technique. I really appreciate the classical details and expression in Efremova's technique. It's her personal interpretation, especially in her eppaulement.

Esfremova! Very contained, precise, and musical with no high legs to distract. And beautiful, fast turns. I don't see her weight as more than today's dancers as some of the comments say.
I'm not a dancer and I don't watch ballet but seriously the first dancer mesmerized me. The way she moved its like she was the one creating the music. I was in awe....every move was fluid and graceful as if she's flooting in the air. There's ethereal and elegance in her performance. She looks like a visual manifestation of the very music being played. Unlike the other two who look like there is a check list that they need to meet at a certain section of the music. It felt rushed. But what do I know🤷. An ignorant on classical ballet but was captivated by the first dancer.....
Exactly! I was just telling my sister that the other two looked like they were told “You have to be at this spot at this part of the song, but you have to do so-and-so moves in between.” I loved Efremova’s rendition, she had such grace and control of her movements. I also noticed the other two dancers barely had much muscle mass to their legs, compared to Efremova. I hate what modern ballet has become.
The first dancer's choreography makes the most sense with the music imo, and I love how she brings the character to life. That's not to say I didn't appreciate the other two, because I did. They were both quite lovely in their own way, but I really enjoyed the choreography in the 1960 version.❤❤❤
I saw the Nutcracker performed at the Mariinsky in December 2021. It was simply magical: knowing that I was in the same building where the ballet had premiered under Tchaikovsky's conducting so long ago, it was like being transported into the past, even if the dances have changed slightly over the years. It's always the senior recital of the Vaganova Ballet Academy, and the dancers are simply unmatched.
Svetlana Efremova ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️I am inspired most by her ❤️(Edited to include that her strength and technical abilities is evidence of what a true master she was, and who her professors and teachers were).
Wow Efremova was amazing. Never understood the connection between the dance and the choreography until now. Her controlled and slower movements really piece it together
В первом танце больше событий происходит - каждое движение наполнено содержанием, завораживает не столько техника, сколько истории рассказанные в танце наклонами головы, улыбками, маленькими движениями, составляющими сюжет. В двух других отрывках мы смотрим на красивые движения, но в сюжет они не складываются, зрителю даже кажется, что сам танец короче, хотя он длится ровно столько же и укладывается в одну и ту же музыку.
I like the 1960s one for the impact the twirls had-actually made me say “wow” due to how crisp they were. And the tutu was more expressive too. The dance seemed to fit the music better.
i learned this version and i studied the Efremova and the Maximova tapes. this was always the *only* sugarplum that made sense to me. it's the only choreography that matches the music the way i hear it. this is the only one that i will perform (a difficult task for me, because i'm much taller, lankier and less refined than these classic ballerinas) but i just cant stand some of the other versions that seem to go completely against the music and skip right over all these beautiful details
Wow, Efremova actually moved with the music inside her. The others just snapped to their marks and went through the motions. Some of that may have been advice from the director, too.

Какая-то грустная эволюция... 1960 - потрясающее исполнение, грация, единение с музыкой, 1993 - поскромнее, а 2017 - совсем грустно... Почитав комментарии, поняла, что я не одинока в своих суждениях.
I thought the same thing, OH yeah! This is supposed to be a fairy! She reminded me of that with her lovely, precise movements. And I enjoyed the rest of the dance watching the enchanting fairy, doing fairy things.
@@katyabo1461 I have noticed that problem with a lot of the modern-day dancers. I think it's because ballet is viewed as more of a sport so they try to be as flamboyant as possible rather than making sure they're staying in time with the actual music.
@@rokelle_2012 agreed totally. Also the aesthetic requirement of very long legs has slowed down the overall performance tempo and the weird obsession with higher legs over épaulement and keeping turnout is kind of derailing the technical basis in the long run
With my layman eyes I can definitely see the beautiful technique of the first one. The last one was totally off beat with the steps. Love the less stiff tutu of the first one as well

The first one is seriously the best. I know literally nothing about ballet, but she was actually dancing to the music. Also I'm always impressed when the dancers in the back are completely still. That is amazing. I can't sit still like that at all. hah!

I don’t think the tempo is actually slower. It seems slower because she uses more “hang time” to transition in and out of each movement, creating a real flow. The other dancers’ movements are more sudden.
I preferred the second one from the 90s. A lot more grace especially in the hand gestures

And i know nothing about ballet but to me the face that the first girl is ever so slightly off beat makes it seem less rushed, the others are more on beat and makes it feel faster

With the first dancer everything makes absolute sense. I always thought this dance was messy; everytime I watched it, it felt like it was off beat. But not with that first ballerina. It just made sense.

Oh gosh finally I understand why Ballerina is always off beat and unsynchronized. I thought I am being rude and not open minded because I don't know much about Ballerina culture but after your explanation and watching the first ballerina, It does make sense.

One thing about the sugar plum fairy that has always befuddled me was musicality. There are so many fun moments in the music and I couldn’t always clearly understand the connection between the choreo and it - until now. Efremova danced it the way I’ve always wanted to see it and really married the choreo and the music. And her bourrées… I just LOVE how she used them actually move across the stage and take up space!!!

You are so right. Her three little jumps in time with the characteristic three repeated notes in the music were so enchanting and 'right'. If there isn't the marriage between the music and its interpretation those little jumps can become just empty gestures. I've seen performances where they actually become grotesque and comical.
The way you always wanted to see it was a primitive idea of choreography where every note demands a corresponding step or gesture?? You woulda loved all the forgotten snoozefests from the 19th century
Not a ballet dancer here but a physiotherapist. Efremova had more muscle mass in her lower extremities which allowed both the fluid movements & the power to “hold” her joints in various positions for longer lengths of time without tiring which enabled her to match the music better. The evolution is of the preferred, slimmer body “type” over one with more weight due to muscle mass.
For me Russian ballet is the best in the world. I would so love them to add in top professional physiotherapists and nutritionists to their ballet staff and watch their ballet dancers become much healthier and watch how their performances are taken to even more incredible heights.
Efremova was trained in the Soviet Ballet Schools. That is why their technique and artistry was the best. What I find interesting is if Efremova was thinner, she would still be a good contender for today's artists. That says a lot.
I am not a dancer but I was watching that thinking the same thing, her muscles make her moves more stable and precise. The other ones feel almost like paper or like a feather they don’t feel like a person exacting moves with their body. I almost feel like with each move your body grounds differently to the earth and it was like their bodies weren’t grounding during the moves with the last two women ❤ Ballet is so beautiful

Your comment makes the most sense to me. The first ballerina has the most “hang time” in her poses, and also in the transitions into and out of the poses, which makes the whole dance feel so much more organic and human.
The other dancers were more robotic, like, fast-fast-POW! Fast, fast, POW! whereas the first dancer’s movements have a more “roly-poly” quality.
In belly dancing, there is an idea that you should move like you’re in a ball of goo. Nothing should be sudden. You should spend as much time and energy and attention getting in and out of your poses as you spend in them.
Plus, her stage presence was just captivating. It seems like she might be the more mature artist of the three.
Interestingly Efremova, the first dancer had the best technique, more controlled, more graceful and more in time with the music. This is not an evolution but rather a comparison of different dancers.
Well said! I agree completely. Efremova had lovely legato and epaulement. The other two dancers were both good. The compilation is a comparison, not an evolution, which implies good to better or best.
I absolutely, completely agree. Sugarplum is hard to do. Very hard. I’ve seen so many videos and films of excellent ballerinas perform it and there were only a few who really nailed it. Lauren Cuthbertson being one of them. Maybe it’s because a Christmas ballet has to be magical and the fairy has to become real - even with difficult choreography. She has to be so delicate, soft, perfect and controlled. That is really hard. Also, there are hundreds of little girls watching and looking for this magical creature to be real - it’s the first ballet most children will see. I think that’s added pressure.
I completely agree with you. For me the most magical fairy is Nina Kaptsova, Bolshoi Theatre 2010, that's where evolution really is.

Yes, she brings out the fairy like noone. Number 3 reminded me weirdly of swanlake. The arm movements are too fluid and not accentuated and abrupt enough to make it look as funny and cute as number 1.

I’m not a dancer, but I love seeing The Nutcracker every Christmas. It wasn’t until watching this video of the first dancer that I remembered that the Sugar Plum Fairy was supposed to be a toy. It was a much more interesting and magical performance from the first dancer with her precise, stiff, movements than the last one who was too smooth.

As someone who knows nothing about ballet and has never seen a live performance and only watched this out of boredom and mild curiosity- the first one is the best. She’s by far the most on beat and her tutu dances in sync with her. It’s so pretty and mesmerizing to watch.
The other two are technically very good but more staccato if that's a thing. Yes, the first was the best, her personality and acting shone through, she was more believable.
All three dancers performed beautifully but the first dance by Efremova was absolutely magical. Her fluid movements beautifully matched the music and it felt vibrant even on black and white film. I don't want to put down the following two dancers because they obviously worked hard and danced better than I ever could even in my wildest dreams. However, as time goes on they seemed progressively more mechanical and too perfect in their movements. It was like watching marionette puppets perform rather than a living doll like the sugar plum fairy is supposed to be. Both were undoubtedly well done on a technical aspect but they felt empty...

Want to see a completely different performance of this is to watch Alicia Markova dancing it old footage with music added but my God how different it is. So much more too it and she is so light on her feet and although tiny is not like a stick insect. A lot of modern arrangements are far too stiff and correct for my liking. No.1 is the best for me, much more natural, if you can call any sugar plum natural😂.

I know nothing about ballet. But to me, the first performance was breathtaking. Slow pace, not rushed like the others. You can feel the emotion and passion she puts into her performance. Her pace is also more in tune with the music.
The music in new versions is sped up! Did you notice? It is visisble that other two dancers were trying to make it in time for the next move and the next one etc but because it's sepd up - they just rush and you can clearly see that, espcially when in comparison to the first dancer.

Not a dancer and didn't know much about ballet at all, but the first one, Efremova, left the biggest impression for me. I reallly love how she's really in tune with the music, and I dunno whether this was intentional or in choreo or not, but holy, in some parts, even her tutu fluttered in sync with the music, it's sooo pleasing 💕💕

Efremova is not dancing as the Sugar Plum Fairy. She looked like she IS the Sugar Plum Fairy ❤️. She seems utterly consumed in her art...not playing a part but she has internalized it so well and has such amazing technique to express this artistry. The way she played the Sugar Plum Fairy is more ethereal and magical because she doesn't look like shes trying to please people or perform. She looks like she just IS inherently magical and letting us see the magic and being herself. The other two looked like performers who were too conscious.

Not a dancer but musician, is incredible how the first dancer was following the music, her feet moves and body follows the music compass, her body express the music language, delicate notes delicate steps, strong notes more pirouettes and jumps. The first one is much better.
Being a musician you should have noticed and noticed the tempo of the first one is significantly slower.

Efremova, the first one, is pure perfection. As in other comments, Sugarplum musicality is dificult and with many dancers it does not make sense and the whole thing ends up feeling akward to watch, kind of clumsy. Efremova perfect technique and musicality makes it a delight, if you don´t know ballet, itwill seem as if she is not doing much, but if you know ballet you know what she is doing is absolutely astonishing. In both cases you will feel mesmerised by this "little" dance.
I was wondering if her left foot looked as if it might be injured. Just asking your opinion. Very beautiful performance whatever.

@@AdeleiTeillana I don't know why you called me 'ridiculous'. Dancers are incredibly skilled at hiding any kind of injury, and are able to push on (inadvisably imo) through intense pain. I'm not even saying that she was injured, just asking, as I noticed she didn't fully come onto her left foot once or twice in the way she did with her right foot (and again I could be totally wrong). Jumping or hopping en pointe is very sore and there was a lot of that in this solo. My husband incidentally had the same reaction as I did, we were both a bit indifferent when we first watched Efremova, then coming back to her performance after seeing the other two, we were quite entranced and thought it was magical.

As someone who is really into costumes and did help the dance majors make their costumes one year in college, I also noticed the change in costume. The tutu became less & less straight out to form more or a bell shape by the 3rd rendition. Someone may have noted already as the comment section is full of interesting expertise. Thanks for showing us! I’m really excited to take ballet classes as an adult fairly soon. 👏🏻🩰

I love the first one. The grace, the control and most of all: simplisity of her movements made every second feel full. It was like she didn't follow the music, the music followed her. This is why the newer versions looks so messy, cause they have to kick higher, or spin faster to seem more impressive. But simplisity really is beautiful in ballet. It leaves room for so much more feeling and art instead of just tricks and gymnastics.
That first dance was incredible. She was so delicate and graceful it felt so euphoric as she skipped and floated through a field of sugar plums. What extraordinary technique and skill she has. I especially enjoyed watching her retreat, her neck and limbs were so rigid yet appeared so natural. What an amazing artform. Mad respect
I didn't read the title properly, and just sat and watched all of these lovely dancers look ethereal. I understand now that it was meant to be a comparison but as a compilation I thought everyone danced wonderfully

Я бы даже сказала, что первая балерина танцует, а две следующие делают гимнастические упражнения под музыку: поднимают ноги, подпрыгивают... Возможно, они даже лучше ноги задирают и подпрыгивают, но пропадает ощущение волшебного танца. И в силу этого мне непонятно, почему это названо "эволюция"? Гимнастика, даже самая художественная, всё равно гимнастика.

The first dancer! I could just see sugar and snowflakes flowing from her fingertips! That was the first time I've seen that choreography and not thought, wow, those hops must hurt. I just sat back and enjoyed the moment.
Wow... The dancer from the 60s has very refined and expressive dance. It's not even about technicity, it's more about pauses and meaningful phrases expressed through subtle dance movements. I'm not a big expert in ballet, but I either feel it or not. The first one was the best for me.
Former dancer here. It is encouraging to see how many people here recognize that Ms Efremova gave the most artistic and musical performance of the three. The two other dancers do represent represent changes in body type preference and an emphasis on athleticism over musicality and expression that is now in vogue in the ballet world and which unfortunately has fostered a loss of artistry. I hope that as the public can recognize this loss it will one day lead to the pendulum swinging back into the direction of artistry and elegance. Thank-you for posting this comparison. It is very informative.

Это партия Маши с 1934 года. И действительно девочки очень хрупкие, когда растут. Партия о взрослении девочки. Дети - рождественские игрушки родителей.

I agree that the first was the best embodiment of Sugarplum. All were beautiful, but the first was the epitome, not only in technique, but also in presence and true encompassing of all aspects of this role. I am assuming she was a little older than the other dancers, at this moment of performing, and that might explain some of it. But it makes me want to see what other videos of the first dancer are on UA-cam!!! She seemed to embody a rare gift, along with marvelous training. Thank you for posting!!
Ефремова смотрит на каждый пальчик руки, провожая взглядом руки. Это волшебно. А так же чувство музыкальной фразы позволяет ей быть очень гармоничной. Безусловно две последующие балерины прекрасны, но мне почему-то не хватает этого волшебства Ефремовой.
Когда не хватает техники, приходится брать артистизмом, на пальчики смотреть.

Фея Драже, никакой не сахарной сливы. В Великобритании в старину драже называли "sugar plum" из-за формы. К сливам это не имеет никакого отношения.

Но и прогнуться и задрать ногу- тоже есть предел. Это конечная функция.
Ничего не понимаю в балете, но мне больше понравилась последняя, уж не знаю почему, она как-то легче что-ли...

The first, Efremova, is my favorite by far. There is a delicacy to her performance that fits the music and story. Her arm movements alone are graceful and captivating. Even her facial expression is part of the dance and story. Not really an evolution after her.

not a lot of people are talking about how the first one had great cinematography (started out on top, and had thought to framing rather than just put the camera in front), and great costumes (her tutu was puffier and less stiffer and every time she moved, it looked like she herself was a flower)
These are all very true, but not really impactful enough to skew the opinion. The dance overall is much more controlled when Efremova performed. Even the pace is better.

The first dancer had charisma, had an energy and a charm that got my gaze focused on her dancing. She was a natural born ballet dancer

Efremova’s technique is rock solid. Her turns are like a metronome, with no finessing the final turn. Yet. I prefer the ethereal quality and bountiful bourrées of the following ballerina.

Efremova was amazing in that piece. Her skill & timing were just breath taking & yet also a joy to watch.
Just in awe with Efremova, who perfectly and properly ends each movement and is in complete harmony with the music.

I don't think it's the other dancers who are the problem. It's the choreographers and directors.
It's not the fault of the dancers how they are being taught and the different physical aspects they have to deal with now in ballet.
There is no fault with the dancers in my opinion. Just an interpretation of technique. I really appreciate the classical details and expression in Efremova's technique. It's her personal interpretation, especially in her eppaulement.

Esfremova! Very contained, precise, and musical with no high legs to distract. And beautiful, fast turns. I don't see her weight as more than today's dancers as some of the comments say.

I'm not a dancer and I don't watch ballet but seriously the first dancer mesmerized me. The way she moved its like she was the one creating the music. I was in awe....every move was fluid and graceful as if she's flooting in the air. There's ethereal and elegance in her performance. She looks like a visual manifestation of the very music being played. Unlike the other two who look like there is a check list that they need to meet at a certain section of the music. It felt rushed. But what do I know🤷. An ignorant on classical ballet but was captivated by the first dancer.....
Exactly! I was just telling my sister that the other two looked like they were told “You have to be at this spot at this part of the song, but you have to do so-and-so moves in between.” I loved Efremova’s rendition, she had such grace and control of her movements. I also noticed the other two dancers barely had much muscle mass to their legs, compared to Efremova. I hate what modern ballet has become.
The first dancer's choreography makes the most sense with the music imo, and I love how she brings the character to life.
That's not to say I didn't appreciate the other two, because I did.
They were both quite lovely in their own way, but I really enjoyed the choreography in the 1960 version.❤❤❤

I saw the Nutcracker performed at the Mariinsky in December 2021. It was simply magical: knowing that I was in the same building where the ballet had premiered under Tchaikovsky's conducting so long ago, it was like being transported into the past, even if the dances have changed slightly over the years. It's always the senior recital of the Vaganova Ballet Academy, and the dancers are simply unmatched.
The first lovely lady really takes her time and nails it because of this. She works WITH the music.

В первом танце больше событий происходит - каждое движение наполнено содержанием, завораживает не столько техника, сколько истории рассказанные в танце наклонами головы, улыбками, маленькими движениями, составляющими сюжет. В двух других отрывках мы смотрим на красивые движения, но в сюжет они не складываются, зрителю даже кажется, что сам танец короче, хотя он длится ровно столько же и укладывается в одну и ту же музыку.
I like the 1960s one for the impact the twirls had-actually made me say “wow” due to how crisp they were. And the tutu was more expressive too. The dance seemed to fit the music better.
Efremova Svetlana's dance is unparalleled. She moves as if breathing, so perfectly natural and harmonious. It is the highest degree of art.
I definitely feel Efremova was the best our of the 3. Perfect technique, graceful, most pleasing to watch.

Wow! The forst ballerina is everything I wantwd to be when I was young and danced ballet. She's grace. Ballet was so magical!
i learned this version and i studied the Efremova and the Maximova tapes. this was always the *only* sugarplum that made sense to me. it's the only choreography that matches the music the way i hear it. this is the only one that i will perform (a difficult task for me, because i'm much taller, lankier and less refined than these classic ballerinas) but i just cant stand some of the other versions that seem to go completely against the music and skip right over all these beautiful details
Wow, Efremova actually moved with the music inside her. The others just snapped to their marks and went through the motions. Some of that may have been advice from the director, too.

Wow! After the first one, the dance of the sugarplum fairy finally makes sense!
I thought the same thing, OH yeah! This is supposed to be a fairy! She reminded me of that with her lovely, precise movements. And I enjoyed the rest of the dance watching the enchanting fairy, doing fairy things.
I love the first one. Full with emotion. The last one is too perfect for me.
She can't be perfect, moving out of music!)
@@katyabo1461 I have noticed that problem with a lot of the modern-day dancers. I think it's because ballet is viewed as more of a sport so they try to be as flamboyant as possible rather than making sure they're staying in time with the actual music.
That being said, I honestly only noticed her being the tiniest bit fast, but still mostly keeping to the music.

@@rokelle_2012 agreed totally. Also the aesthetic requirement of very long legs has slowed down the overall performance tempo and the weird obsession with higher legs over épaulement and keeping turnout is kind of derailing the technical basis in the long run

With my layman eyes I can definitely see the beautiful technique of the first one. The last one was totally off beat with the steps. Love the less stiff tutu of the first one as well

The first one is seriously the best. I know literally nothing about ballet, but she was actually dancing to the music. Also I'm always impressed when the dancers in the back are completely still. That is amazing. I can't sit still like that at all. hah!
