Is this the version of the ballet they ultimately cancelled on account of being "racist?!?! I love the Oriential décor oif the stage, including the character design of the prince (it's actually the first version where I ever saw the Prince to be Oriental, and I think it was a great idea to make him so). I'm still looking for what is actually "racist" in the sense of "discriminating against a certain race or devaluing it" in this version and cannot find it - sorry. If at all, the Oriental flair adds to the dreamlike quality of the story, as Clara is thought to visit the Land of Sweets in her dreams.
I just delved into this topic on Google, & yes, you are correct. The Berlin State Ballet announced at the end of November 2021 that they were going to forgo all performances of "The Nutcracker" until such time as they can completely overhaul both the Chinese & Arabian dances. In its stead, they announced that they would be performing "Don Q."
First of all, oriental is an offensive and outdated word that shouldn’t be used, second, the racist part of the nutcracker sometimes is that there is a lot of cultural appropriation and misappropriation. By stealing a cultures traditional attire and using it for your holiday entertainment it can be harmful to the culture and those who are part of it.
I don't think it has anything to do with the setting (and this uses the original 1892 designs) but specifically to the Chinese and Arabian dances which are based around stereotypes (of course so is the Spanish dance but...)
@@rebeccanewman8391 appropriation? Because there's Chinese and Arabian dances? Who gives a shit? Also, is using the word "oriental" to refer to a noun(s) that is NOT a person a bad thing? Spare us all your over the top sense self-righteousness. 🤮
@@rebeccanewman8391 oh get off your high horse---oriental literally means 'eastern' in latin. that is where asia is in respect to europe. secondly---have you ever heard of cultural transference, like when asian or african people do french ballet or people in europe look towards other nations for artistic inspiration? yeah. people are always inspired by different things. i understand that what you are saying is fashionable and you have swallowed what you have been fed like a good little student, but maybe replace some of your self-righteous indignation with some critical thought of your own next time?
Great dancers. It takes extremely talented artists to pull off this horrible and uncomfortable choreography. Just bunch of combinations taken from different ballets. You have to kiss the feet of dancers that make it look better than it really is.
I’d love to have a conversation with you…I think the choreography and themes of this ballet need an overhaul. As for this dance, not sure what their motivation is here….all show no substance! And what was the slide all about…just weird?!
This ballerina’s arm work is breathtaking. And no matter how cliche… her feet are perfection.
What a beautiful show by Germany artists.
С удовольствием посмотрела! Спасибо!
Bene, bravi.❤
Maravilloso
