You are a gift from heaven! Easy to understand and very helpful. KDP at a glance was so complicated I wondered if we would ever get the book we are working on published! You gave us new hope.
You're so welcome! Let me know what else you'd like to see! There isn't a set number of pages I can recommend based on size, it really does depend on how much content you have! I wouldn't recommend having a book that's more than about 300 pages in total, though! (Like, once it has been typeset!) It won't make sense for print cost if you go too big!
Please can you do a video about what and how Author Central works on KDP? I'm new to journal designing and colouring books and unsure what some of the features are for on Amazon KDP. Thanks. ❤
Although I want my product to be used to write in I really have the vision for the product to be similar to a devotional so I'm thinking 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 on sizing . Not sure what decision to make
You can absolutely make something that size if that's what you feel is best for you! I recently made a self-awareness journal that is 5x8 and about 120 pages, so it's more compact/small but that's the vibe I was going for! You can choose whatever size works best for you!
Hardcover on KDP is still a beta feature, so they don't have all the sizing options the paperback style does! The size I recommend depends on how you prefer your journal to be. A 5.5x8.5 would be like the size of the popular "5 minute journal" but if you prefer a bigger option, 7x10'' would be a good alternative!
I'm doing my 1st book & doing a final proof-read so this info is very helpful! A lot of good points..thank U. Looking 4ward 2 cking out more of ur videos. 💯👏👏😁💖💃👍
How many words is it? Most common sizes are 5.5x8.5 or 6x9 but if it’s a lot of words, you could go slightly bigger to account for that! Or lower word count, 5x8.
Yes, definitely! If you don't want to work with big retailers for distribution, you would just need a printing company and you can choose to do that with a print-on-demand company for printing ONLY (not distribution) OR a domestic or international print company where you could potentially do offset print runs to get a good price-per-book rate.
Love this video! My manuscript is about 41,000 with small paragraphs to increase white space in the pages to enhance the reading ease. About how many pages will it be in the 8.5 x 5.5 book size? I've seen several self-published book with narrow margins to pack in a lot of text. It immediately betrays that it's self-published. I hope to have my book layout done very professionally. Working carefully towards it.
Hello! For a manuscript that size, with maybe 1.5 line spacing and normal margins, 8.5 x 5.5 trim and I’d estimate the final book will be about 200-220 pages. That’s a solid size!
Hey! If you selected “all territories” in your book listing (it’s on page 3) it should be available everywhere! Is it a Dream Dictionary (I searched your name on Amazon! 🥰) I am able to see it in Canada!
Best to go for 9/10pt for the main body of an 'adult' book. 12/14pt for the title. Children's books can have the main text as 14-18pt to make it more legible.
@@exwhyzedprint Thanks for your input! I would suggest 11 or 12pt as the smallest size, I usually publish non-fiction adult trade paperback type books, and under 11 can be a little straining to read in my opinion! But of course, to each their own :)

Very informative and enjoyable video to watch 🙌 Interesting to see the sizing as US sizes in inches. In the UK A5 (210x148mm) and A4 (297x210mm and similar to US Letter) the most cost effective to print and post out to readers.
This is interesting to me because I'm Canadian and we typically use cm not in ! But it has become standard I suppose in North America to size this way!

Hey there! From KDP directly: "The minimum is 24 pages, and the maximum depends on the ink, paper, trim size, and other factors. You can find more information by reading KDP's Paperback Submission Guidelines." The 24 page "minimum" is typically for something like a children's book, not a full book. There are hundreds of categories and you are allowed to select two "main" ones in your book listing (and can contact KDP if you want to add up to 6 more categories). I kind of feel.like 6x9 is too small but as a word document it's about 45 pages of straight content. That's 45 pages not including any forward or table of content pages.
Hey there! For a book like what you're describing, I'd suggest selecting a 7.5 x 9.25 or 8 x 10 trim size. Note that the page count will be different once it has been typeset, so just because it has 45 pages in word doesn't mean it will have 45 pages when laid out. It will probably have MORE pages than that! Add in your worksheets and tests and it should be a fairly substantial sized resource. If it were me, I would select 8 x 10, as it's most conducive to opening up fully so that it can be written in, as I assume that's a big part of this resource. Hope that helps!!
Hey there! If you are creating a children's book (or any book with full colour illustrations!) there are two options for colour: standard colour and premium colour. With my children's book clients, we always use premium colour paper. With a children's book, it tends to work out well, as there are always a smaller amount of total pages. It can get expensive, though, if using colour for a book that has a LOT of pages. With that being said, it would likely mean the retail cost of the book would go UP, if it's something like a coffee table book with photography included. That's a book you could charge far more for when it goes to Amazon, than a book that would use standard black and white paper, for example. Hope that helps!

I'm writing a memoir. Can I use size 14 font . It's only 150 pages in word. The trim is 5.5 x 8.5 . Would the book be worthy to still go to Barnes and Noble if I used a bigger font. Meaning, at the end, it is likely the book would be more like 300 pages, or 150 front and back. Does that make sense? Also note that there are stylistic adjustments (Chapter titles, spacer pages, front and back matter) that will play into the overall thickness of the book, and the fact that your typeset designer can also manipulate line spacing in addition to font sizing. Lastly, I wouldn't stress about not getting the book into retail stores like Barnes and Noble based on font size :) There are less "rules" about the specific font size and more about the quality of the book overall. I know the video is 2 years old but you should consider uploading it again after flipping it... i wanted to read every book you held up but it was too much work.
LOL! Thank you for the feedback! -- The title of the books aren't really important as the focus is about the size comparison, not the books themselves! But...you're 1 of hundreds who have said the same thing 😆 so, I will definitely consider!!
So at around eight minutes and 38 seconds you mention if your word count is between 20 or 30 of 5 x 8 is fine but what if I have 73,000 words what would your suggestion be and I would have to assume a 6 x 9 correct I would love to know the answer soon
Hello! That's awesome, great accomplishment! The book size is totally up to you; in short, 6x9 would definitely work for the size of your manuscript. You may also have your layout/typeset designer manipulate the line spacing and font size depending on if you wish to have a thicker or thinner book. In my opinion, I would err on the side of "thin" by manipulating the text size/spacing, as ultimately it will result in a lower print cost of your finished product. You could easily size your book at 6x9 with that word count and have the standard spacing/font sizing - 1-1.5 spacing, with standard font size 12. I wouldn't recommend going bigger than 6x9 if it's a standard book. Bigger than that is more ideal for journals/workbooks or books that require writing space. Hope that helps!
