  • Ayla and I have been playing with the next step of her backing preparation, which is working at the mounting block.
The cone is there for Ayla to use as a start signal i.e. to indicate to me when she is ready for me to start the mounting activity, as well as an easier option we can play with if she needs a break from the more difficult activity.
The first step we take is standing on the mounting block and the dummy rider does the actual mounting. Ayla is already familiar with this process from the ground - the only change is that the dummy and I are now starting from a higher point, on the mounting block, instead of standing on the ground next to her.
The next step is introducing my weight by lightly leaning onto the saddle and then creating a bit of a rocking action to check that she is comfortable with a moving point of balance. From there I start to reach over and touch her on the other side of her body with my hand.
In the following session, I started introducing my leg. To do this safely, I am holding onto a rope that is tied to a solid fence pole. This way, I am not balancing on Ayla, but rather balancing on the rope. I can titrate how much weight I introduce to her back in a controlled way while keeping my safety intact because I can use the rope to pull myself upright immediately if needed.
She does a beautiful job staying connected and relaxed during the process so we end on this lovely note, ready to take the next steps when we revisit the mounting again.
