Lots of comments comparing your stables to a prison, or saying that the horses are not getting enough pasture time...I’d be interested to know your opinion . I enjoy your videos very much, I have been Studying French dressage, starting about a year ago. I am studying the long low deep method. Matt, I’m one of the many people that are very disturbed by what was shown here. I truly love all of your stable tours and was excited to see another one of them. But this was shocking. No matter what your name is in the industry - it is okay to speak up. I know you don’t stand for this kind of treatment of animals - I wish you would have added a comment in there sharing your view on this. Uploading this you must have known this will be controversial. I think it’s important to have a conversation about it .. use the platform you have to enlighten us with your thoughts on this topic.
@@MsNewMoona I really hope he speaks up about this because I know that the horses at their home stable get to be actual horses...I wonder how Sureno and Emporio get turned out... But 1 hour at max is just way too low and not okay..borderline animal abuse and I honestly don't care who you are or how much your horses costs they are still horses.
It makes me happy to read the comments under this video! That shows how many of us here are truly here because WE LOVE HORSES. And that we know that a horse that can only be outside for 1 hour a day is not a happy horse. The horses don´t care how fancy the stables are. They are herd animals and want´s to be with each other. I have no understanding for how you as a horse owner think it´s okay to let your horses be inside for 23 hours a day. It´s abuse in my opinion. It doesn't matter if the horse if worth millions of dollar. If you love your horse you would do anything to give it the best life possible. Otherwise this video was amazing, beautiful scenes, great conversations.

I agree 100%! The horses at my stable (I don't own any but I ride 3 of them) are usually out from 7am to around 6pm when it's winter, longer when it's summer. But there's this one horse who just despites being outside! After just 2 hours he's standing there at the gate and being really noisy everytime anyone walks past him, very strange but cute behaviour to me

I'm glad to see that the vast majority of people see how ridiculous this is. Yes, these horses are worth millions of dollars, but that doesn't excuse the lack of turnout. I know of plenty 5 star showjumpers and riders that turn their horses out in huge paddocks for hours a day, which is how it should be. If you let them be horses they will also perform better because they will be happier, keeping them stalled all day is going to make them anxious and unsociable.
Yes. Even racing horses (luxury ones) have big paddocks, fields to run like crazy in the farms. Someone in the comments talk about a famous rider (olympic!) he puts his horses in fields evem for 24/7. So yes, its possible for great horses live as normal horses.

Agreed, it frustrates me to know end that it can be too hot for even the lightest rugs during a heat wave, they bleach, they get little cuts etc, really high maintainance at times trying to keep them presentable but they're happy, they have space to run, friends and plenty to eat.
Upper level horses are often on limited turnout to avoid possible injuries. The trade off is they are in strict work programs so they are in a routine. I agree horses should be able to be horses and I’m a big advocator on turnout. But big money show horses have are a bit more pampered to avoid an injury that can ruin their career.
@@kevine3190 Still. They are athets like you, and like you, they need rest and fun times, if they do the same thing all aloug they get bored or worse; stressed. And like normal atlets they also can get injuries doing training and competing. In the end, you must treat them as horses.
I dont know. I love the facility. You can see that is has been made for humans and not really for horses. I'm very sad that the horse going out for 1 hour in a day.

Well... this is a dilemma... You must also include the fact that those are the highest level sport horses which got so much pressure and excessive training that they simply must have a peaceful rest plus if you put them in a pasture especially with a herd they could get hurt easily and that's not wanted when they are expected to show at competition... not even mentioning that all their energy has to be placed right in the training/when ridden and not somewhere else. I bet when the horses are not in their a competion years they have pretty good time anyway... these horses with such pedigrees (family trees) were simply born to serve in a sport...

@pixielated23 but that does not medan that they are not horses. Horses are meant to chew grass all the time except when its moving.
@pixielated23 My horse was in training for a month, I sent her away for it. She was in pasture full time so long as it wasn't inclimate weather. No excuse.
@@korvstroganoff9775 I agree, horses are horses. They weren't meant for a 10x10 stall, they were made for the plains and to run. Hard to run in a box or in a 30x20 paddock.

Great point. Individual run option for each stall would alleviate so much while providing social, fresh air, stretching until they could go out. Sad missed opportunity with all the stellar architecture. Matt may have been surprised in the moment but remained professional, he's not there to judge but explore as a guest what each of the interview reveals.

When she said 'they're very lucky horses' I was thinking, um no, they're not. Not even a window in their stall? It's all very beautiful, but let's face it, horses are happiest out in the field with their herd mates rolling in the mud. . .heaven forbid. . .getting dirty. I'm sorry Matt, it was a well-done video, just made me sad for the animals.

@@stacymartinanimalartist Sorry for my english. But in barn that i have my own horse. Sport horses, all summer are spending out... Ofcourse, they are going out everyday, but in summer they spend nights out too. and i thinking, this is happy horse.
So if the horse is lucky it get's to be out 1 hour a day? Since they are never dirty they probably don't even get brushed for 30 minutes. Maybe they get washed and put under the solarium or a few rounds in the walking machine if they are lucky which could add to another hour and a half. Let's say they do a 30 minutes warm up, 45 minutes work and 30 minutes cooldown with another 30 mins after care... that's not even 5 and a half hours out of the stall. At most. The normal amount of time spent outside a stall might be 2-3 hourss. The stall might be fairly big, but there are no windows. The horses can't touch each other. It looks like a very sad life. 20 hours behind bars. Even when they are allowed outside the stall they only see the walls of a walking machine or the walls of the arena. Do they get trained every day? If not that means there are days they spend way over 20 hours behind bars.
The mare looked very timid and I am not surprised. All she knows probably is the silence of the stall or the large crowds of shows. That is a huge contrast and also means a lot of sudden stress.
Sorry, but this video has to get a thumbs down. That is not a fair life for a horse. No prises in the world are worth so much "safety". It is mind baffling to me how a horse lover can wonder around such a place and praise it when it is worse than a prison for these horses. I'm sure prison inmates get more time in the yard than these horses.
I totally understand you! Even tho i think the facility looks amazing and like a great place to ride at.
I definately would want the horses to be out more in larger padocks. Where i ride right now(private) they go out everymorning at about 5.30-6.00 to about 20.00. (Now during winter, in the summer they are out all day and night pretty much). They also get ridden almost everyday in an outdoor arena or on a hack.
I have come across a similar stable to the one in this video but i Think they were allowed a bit more out-time at least. Even tho their paddocs were pretty small so that the horses wouldn't hurt themselfs or eachother.
I hope that not all "top" riders have their horses in their boxes Most of the day😥
But still this place was very pretty and i'm thankfull to Matt for showing this place😊

What a stable, the best is the indoor arena. I don’t like the idea that the horses aren’t turned out in a bigger pasture for a longer time.
I agree. Temple Grandin described stalls as luxury prisons as it is so against the natural needs of horses.

My mare despises being in a stall. If I put her in a stall for even an hour she will give me the silent treatment (or at least the horse equivalent of it). I couldn't imagine putting her in a stall every day, all day aside from maybe an hour a day where she is in a tiny excuse for a pasture or being ridden 5 times a week. It's honestly sad. I see a lot of other people commenting its like prison, which it is. They are stuffed in boxes all day and don't even get turnout with other horses. You should NEVER ruin the quality of life for your animal for the sake of it winning you ribbons or for the sake of your tiny paddocks having perfect grass and even ground.

This is an absolutely beautiful facility, but it breaks my heart to see how it has been designed for the convenience of the rider rather than the welfare of the horse. For such a big venue to only have a few very small fields and only an hour a day turnout for SOME horses is just not acceptable. Horses are herd animals designed to walk several kilometres a day, and depriving them of the contact of other horses is detrimental to their mental well-being. Her comment about some of them not wanting to go outside is just not accurate - horses regress into learned helplessness when they are stalled 24/7, and if you give them enough time to realize that they are free to roam, they will develop back into more normal horse behaviour. A horse's price tag does not justify not treating it like a horse.
I couldn't agree more. I don't understand how some people see stalling for long periods of time as acceptable when there are DOZENS of reputable studies done by equine professionals that all point to how detrimental it is to their mental and long-term physical well-being.

I was so surprised when she said some don’t like being outside! I live in Canada and my horses are out 24/7 they wear a blanket in the winter.
"make sure the horses are happy" sure, totally happy horses with not even one hour per day being outdoors. Horses don't care about fancy arenas or stables in which they can't even have contact to their neighbour horse. Like hello? Those are living animals with needs and not just sport equipment. That's why I hate riding as a sport so much. They only see the amount of money the horse can make or costs because I mean oh god don't let them unmonitored outside for an hour! They could get a scratch and get worthless! What is this sport... thinking about this makes me so sick.

Completely agree, although there are top riders who truely want what's best for the horse, I hope Matt can go to Carl Hester's yard in the future just so he can show on his channel that top competition horses can be allowed to just be horses too. I love the way Carl and Charlotte manage their horses
Totally agree! Although the yard is beautiful I will never agree on competition horses only need a short time out in the field. I couldn't ever work at a competition yard, my mouth would get me into trouble 😄 and money over horses welfare is beyond wrong
In my barn the the horse's are turned out 24/7 unless they have an injury or a young new horse that doesn't fit to the paddock herds.
There are more and more top riders that give their horses a lot more time outside and in bigger fields. It's sad that there are still so many top riders that don't do that. The bay mare they showed had stable bandages on. That is a piece of gear healthy horses don't need. A horse's legs can swell, but usually not when they get plenty of time outside. The fact that she needs to put on stable bandages says enough.

We as a community, that being the horse world, need to do better and encourage people like that to treat their animals fairly. I dont see a difference between that and a prison, at least for the animals. 1 hour of time in the yard, the rest behind metal bars? you get meals 2x a day and you might get some work out time if you're good.

it felt like they care more for the welfare of the grass in those paddocks than the welfare of the animals. They had all these measures in place to have the perfect paddock but the horses barely use them.
I don't think they actually care if the horses are happy. They are treated as a commodity not a living creature.
And the "we don't want them getting hurt" is ridiculous. If they have this money, then they sure as hell can afford rehab. Horses will injure themselves as they are animals.
The horses at my barn are literally out unless they are being ridden. In Canada.
Horses need to be outside and have interactions with other horses. I know that these are professionals but you don’t have to be an expert to know that 1 hour a day outside it not enough.

The facilities are stunning but I agree with others, horses need to be horses. Carl Hester and Ingrid Klimke are two of the most famous names in the sport and their horses cross train, go outside and do trails for a better quality of life. This is the difference between a horseman and a rider.
A bit disappointed a stable like this is given such a platform on your channel. This is not the way we should be keeping horses, no matter how skilled or expensive they are. They're still horses with the same basic needs: friends, freedom and forage. Being outside 1 hour in a paddock by themselves, two of these 3 horses basic needs aren't met. Providing their basic needs is the least we could do for them to work with us. I'd like to see some beautiful stables where horse welfare is the top prioity instead of human comfort.
I mean, I get some horses have limited outdoor time or cant be put out on grass but holy moly, I can't stand to see my mare in a stall if it isn't essential, she paces and looks sad. That would be such a cruel existence. That is a stable for people - not horses.
Imagine being in a room 24/7 and only able to go out of it 1 hour a day to just relax and walk.. I’m amazed Matt approves of keeping horses this way...

How is there any justification for treating horses, who are social animals, this way? Money is the priority, not the health and well being of the horses. There is no consideration given to their mental health.

Rich people dont really care about animals silly, its about impressing poor people and other rich people.
They have points. Multiple studies have proven how much better turnout is for horses. Stalling is truly just for humans' convenience.
@Bus Je The horses don't know if they're well bred or not. All a horse wants to do is graze all day and run around with their buddies. Stalling is bad for their digestion because horses aren't supposed have have two square meals a day; they're supposed to be slowly eating all day. This puts them at a greater risk of colic, which as I’m sure you're aware, is life threatening. Stalling also isn't as good for their joints; instead of walking miles upon miles a day like the horse is built for its in a 9mx9m box. This puts them at greater risk of soft tissue damage. Thirdly, its highly unlikely that there are people waiting around for the horse to urinate or defecate. Standing around in their waste is bad for their hooves and breathing in that much ammonia can damage their airways. In addition, how many stalled horses do you see that are bucking, bolting or just generally 'misbehaving'? It's likely because they only have this one chance to release all this pent up energy. In dogs we call it the zoomies and we laugh, but in horses we punish them, only causing them frustration and a bigger, more dangerous, out burst in the future.
@Bus Je I’m no expert, correct, just conveying their research. An hour or two of exercise alone does not equate to hours of hanging out with their friends, being able to run when they want. One of the five basic needs of animal welfare is the need to exhibit normal behaviour patterns. How many horses would choose to stand in a stall if the door is open to a big field filled with their friends?
also, why should there be such a huge difference between "upscale" husbandry and "normal" husbandry. At the end of the day the grade mix and the well bred warmblood still need the same level of care and both deserve to be as happy and healthy as possible. I have not worked at a high level barn, but somehow I don't think you have either. I don't think you're stupid, you just believe the things that have been repeated to horse owners for generations. Studies on equine welfare ARE hard to find, and I have no doubt that you're trying to do the best for your horses, you just haven't found new information yet.
Both the Tops facility and the Kittel stable have immaculate and depressed looking horses. Im sure both Edwina and Patrik would love to stay in their beds 23 hours per day, and go on the treadmill for an hour. Sorry for the rant but this luxurious place just looks sad

Carl Hester British olympian is a hero of mine.... he turns his horses out, regardless of monetary value.... young, old, up and coming potential stars for the future or gold medal national treasures....They all get to do a crazy gallop with companions in the rain.... YES....rain!! Beautiful facilities but....while I don't doubt the horses are fundamentally cared for regarding their veterinary and nutritional needs ...😏😑 ... ..at one time I may have agreed with this management of care. However, for a number of years now, my eyes have been opened regarding a different way.

Exactly, top competition horses can be normal horses but it goes to show it comes down to the owners!. This is a prime example of owners who think more about looks than the horse itself. I do think it's a beautiful yard but it just screams out 'look at what we have and you don't' the more I watch it. I would of given it 10/10 if the horses were turned out in the day. I would love matt to do a yard tour of Carl's!
Love Carl Hester’s stable! Not only how he cares for his horses but also all the dogs and birds and other animals running around. Such a happy and fun environment!

I’m kind of happy that all the comments are all agreeing on the keeping of the horses. While the facility as a whole is amazing a beautiful, horses need to be turned out keeping them in a cell all day is just cruel.
“You can’t really put them out because it’s muddy and they’re not very happy to go out” ???? Wtf man. They are horses ! They aren’t meant to be kept indoors into their “big” small boxes. So sad that everything is thought in order to make humans happy but the poor horses are just like any other luxury items that they own and that they must keep clean at all times. They are not objects. They should at least have bigger fields ( like wtf are these tiny green prisons ??) and they should be allowed outside for more than 1 hour. So sad to have that much money but to be so selfish.
I suspect the “they aren’t happy to go out” may be true. Horses kept this way are often conditioned to it and it’s a huge change for them to start going out. I have a boarding facility and have had some horses come in from places that do 1-3 hours of turnout a day. The horses do get anxious at first, pacing the gate, calling, etc. It takes a few weeks for them to acclimate that they are allowed to just be a horse outside for hours and hours a day.
These horses go out by themselves, in tiny boring paddocks. No wonder they want to come in-the stall will be their “safe” zone and there are at least other horses in close proximity. They aren’t making turnout appealing to these horses is what I’m getting at.
@@samanthawright8830 I firmly believe they should at least turn 2 out with one another at a time. My mare went off to training for a month and was turned out by herself the whole time and looked awful sad. She was so happy to be out with her friends when she came home. Its so cruel to keep a horse indoors to save you grooming time.
And it won't get muddy if you make your paddocks and turnouts good. I live in country where 3/4 of the year is dark, rainy and muddy and snowy. We make turnouts that are dry. Its not impossible. Yes its hard work to rug our horses with the weather while today it may be +4 and tomorrow -4. But i rather have my horse dying while breaking their leg outside than colicing inside.
Sounds more like “the horses don’t go out because it’s muddy and I don’t like taking time to clean them” even though she’s bragging about how the horses come first while she can’t even grant them their biggest Luxus BEING OUTSIDE
Disappointing that someone I have idolised won’t even put her horses out for more then an hour . I understand they are expensive creatures but the more horses are out the more they learn to settle down. Idk if this is their preference because they have a lot of clients expensive horses and if something happened etc but it’s really no quality of life for the horses . Especially since she is from Australia and most of our horses apart from race horses are out all of the time in the paddock
All that money spent on multiple arenas.... could have been used as paddocks for the horses to have more turnout...
Could have scrapped an arena for a real pasture. Those weren't even paddocks those were fenced in grass patches.
The stable is amazing, and i am sure they take good care for their horses, but 1 hour a day on a mini Paddock, and some not even that? I could never do that to my horses...

My horse is every day outside and in the summer day and night. Horses don't need this luxus. Only friends, food and go outside. I don't like this boxes in this stable, like a prison

Agree. I know its risky to let them outside, but its sad that they chose the risk over their well being. It's sad what people are willing to do to their animals as soon as money is involved... Riding shouldnt be about profit but about the horses and not letting them go outside is against their nature, no matter how often they are ridden or put into the walker. I am against the commercialisation of the sport.
How sad all that money and all it is really is a miserable existence. The horses can’t even put their heads over the stable doors or look out a window. I’m not rich I barely cover my bills. But my lad is out 24/7 in a herd on a 200 acre farm and I may not have their funds but I think I know which horse is happier. A gilded cage is still a cage and this video honestly makes me sad for those animal’s.

The yard is absolutely stunning but the complete lack of turn out is just sad. There are top competition barns and riders who turn their horses out and allow them to just be horses so there is no excuse. I would love to see a video with Carl Hester or Charlotte, I love they way they manage all of their horses

I can't help but feel that rich people like this in the horse world are some of the most disingenuous people. I obviously don't know her so I can't really judge her, but I've met other rich horse people that weren't even close to this rich and they are very often snobs that never get their fingers dirty in the stable. Not knowing how to turn on the lights after living there for almost 20 years is a bit ridiculous.
Not only that but only letting the horses out for 1 hour in a tiny area is actually horse abuse, horses need to be able to stretch out fully and run and have fun with other horses.
I was waiting for the end where she would show all the beautiful paddocks with some beautiful horses in them and then she shows 4 little holding pens , this is really sad

I was just going to comment the same thing. It’s like, I get they are extremely valuable, but plenty of people with expensive horses (Fox-Pitt, Madden, etc.) practically have their horses live outside... she seems a bit overly paranoid
I agree. I love that stable the horses are very lucky. But one wonders if they'd be happier outside just being horses way more. I felt bad for the horses when she said that they funny let them out that much and only for a hour. I bet if the horses could choose most would be out in the paddocks/fields. But wow what a beautiful equine facility.
How can anyone think that this stable is great? It's only made for the luxury rider and doesn't take into account the horses needs. That is just disgusting!
Anyone who applauds this should really reconsider what a horse really needs, instead of only focusing on his/her own comfort.
They need social contacts, a lot of space to roam around freely, fresh air and much more space in general than these narrow boxes without a window and all the riding arenas dust...

I actually had a job interview at a stable like this, the paddocks was so small and all horses was alone, I went and talked, I asked a lot about the horses and I declined the job, the animals welfare is more important than the look of the stable
I'm actually really pleased to see such sensible and correct comments. I entirely agree, the horses have no perception of how they are living, just that their natural instincts are not being fulfilled.

I love horse riding but this is when it needs more regulation ..... can’t be letting these rich people lock up their horses for over twenty hours a day. Watching her talk about their turnout was embarrassing and she knew it too. It’s abusive. This facility is purely for the humans to flaunt their wealth and sees the horse purely as an investment that cannot be lost or damaged, instead of seeing the horse for the animal It is. Ironic bc locking a horse up all day does nothing good for their health.... p.s. I’m glad the comments are similar. Anyone who truly loves their horse knows he needs to run and socialise.
For the human, not the horse. I agree. Nothing about this says happiness for the horse. Yes they are well fed and cared for but horses are made to RUN! Made to be FREE! Made to be with other horses. Not cooped up in a stall to save a human grooming time or for the convenience of keeping them in a box all day.
i think matt was upset too when he knew about the horse only being out for one hour, his expression totally changed... It's cruel and, in my opinion, it's a form of animal abuse. Their stalls are no different than a prison cell.

@@emmaward4761 they should have more than that. It shouldn't be an "at least" situation. These people have more than enough money to cover the vet fees if their precious horse hurts them self. I say the horse should go first, not these petty rich people worries. So what if the horse hurt them self? The horse was at least happy, and not miserable in a stall, wasting away. These rich people should step off their high horse and realize that they're prioritizing themselves over a horse.
@@mo0onsh0t You are so right about that but I was just putting it out there that they sometimes get a little more time out of their stalls but I agree they need a lot more time in the pasture, it's not like they don't have any money to build more pastures that are way bigger than the mini ones but other than that the pastures are way to small and they don't get enough time outside this is my dream stable with a couple of renovations.

Honestly I think it’s mental abuse to a horse to keep it locked in it’s stall for that many hours. I usually love your video’s, but it makes me sad that you would promote this stable. You keep a dog in a bench for 20 hours it’s abuse. You keep a horse in a stall for 20 hours and suddenly it all about “safety”. Just no.

This was a deeply saddening video. I thought at first they were touring an empty stable and the horses were out; I couldn't believe there were horses in those stalls! They were SO quiet. They can't even put their heads out into the isles? They have no horse friends to go out in a pasture with? It's a depressing life. Just stable, work, an hour out in a small pen, work, stable... I have to agree with those who call this a fancy prison.
It reminds me of a sweet black gelding that was boarded where I used to ride: his owner was paranoid something might happen to him at pasture, and after the one time he was allowed out he got a couple scuffs (just a few dime-size patches of hair off. He spent most of his time out chillin' in the herd, grazing, being a horse) she banned him from pasture. She almost never rode him, either, so he was FULL of energy. He'd scream when the other horses were taken out for their 8+ hours of daily grass. I remember one time his owner tried to walk him in hand outside, on one of those leadlines with the flat webbing and chain: the herd chose that time to gallup by and the gelding freaked out, desperate to join his friends. He ended up, somehow, getting the end of the flat webbing (where it's folded over and seamed) stuck in his rear shoe. The owner was damn lucky my friend and I were at the barn, as she freaked out and went to find something to cut the lead, my friend held the trailing line and I walked the horse. He was a coiled spring, calling and calling; downright dangerous to us and himself, just out of sheer frustrated energy. --We all lived through the drama: the lead line got snipped and eventually removed from his shoe. His owner's response to this? Moved him to a barn with private turn out, so he could live out the rest of his life sentenced to solitary for the crime of not being indestructible.
'Not all horses go outside.' 'We try to have as many of them outside for an hour every day.' SERIOUSLY?? This is not luxury this is very very poor, for for the horses.

I get it, that they are expensive/necessary for the work they do but still they are horses...they should get the chance to be outside for more than an hour.

An animal is not a tool or an equipment. It is a living breathing thing and you as the person need to do things respecting that and honor the animal.
What kinda life is that. Locked up in, trained and locked up again. Or if you get to go outside it's for 1 hour and constant supervision....

The horses are expensive, but that isn't necessary for their work. My mare and I do work 5 days a week and she is turned out full time unless its a) awful weather or b) an injury. I take my time to groom her every day, even if she rolled in the mud. Its bonding. My mare is sane because she is allowed to go out and play with other horses, graze and be a damn horse. The end of this actually really upset me.

Just because you have a fancy facility and top care does not always equal happy horses. Unfortunately it seems their price tag is why they're kept in stalls on display like trophies and can't be horses. Pretty place but depressed horses.
From the stable straight into the indoor arena. Some horses wouldn’t see sunlight forever. My two nags don’t know how lucky they are living on 10 acres 24/7 with shelter.
I had to keep my little bloke in a corral with a big home made shelter for a few years after we battled his laminitis. I would have tears in my eyes walking home because I knew how much he wanted the grass and his friends and I could not give him that. In the video, when the stall door was opened, I saw that horses face I recognised that look, and I felt the same for that horse. I would bet that a bit less admin in the office swapped for a few more hours in the paddock would improve that horse immensely. Its not the body its the mind that is suffering.
Has anyone noticed that the Horse in the Box was wearing boots on the legs? As soon as I saw this, I knew they must have a poor life...Which was confirmed at the end of the Video. I am kind of sad Matt still did this Video and uploaded this. I thought something like this was against his values...
So, why exactly is it risky to have a balanced horse that can move around properly and it is not risky in their eyes to have them locked up 23 hours a day and the 1 hour they are allowed to move (besides exercise) they try to get all that energy out ... I think that’s riskier than anything else. With 2 full time vets on side it sounds like they are very busy. Probably not only from the “dangerous” pasture time but also because those horses don’t move enough throughout the day when they’re not being worked. I’m sure a depressed or bored horse is not as compatible as a horse that gets the same training with actual time to be a horse. It’s time for “show barns” to accept the fact that they have to put the horses needs first. Many are doing it already - very disappointed that this is being presented as “safe” for the horses. A show horse has the same needs as a pleasure horse - more needs probably! And people that argue with the value of a horse ... those people have enough money to insure them properly. Just makes me angry to see that a lot of people pretend like those horses are happy and their needs come first. Yeah ... we see that...

My stables is really nice with 5 arenas and a horse Walker but they all have a window to look out of and get to be turned out either in the day or in the night depending on the horse bc there are quite a lot of livery’s and also Carl hesters yard is the same they all get to have social interaction and get turned out about half the day
And they are quite obviously living like horses they get covered in mud and all get hacked and turned out everday
Beautifully and professionally done production Matt. Just a shame these people don't understand these are living, breathing, sentient beings that needs a heck of a lot more stimuli, socializing and natural movement to be thoroughly content and happy than this fabulous looking prison offers them.
Ugh! I feel so bad for horses that never get turnout. I get that they are expensive show animals- but horses should get turnout every day...ideally with other horses.
loved everything about this until the last part... It´s so sad that most top riders don´t allow their horses to be outside more. I felt cruel towards my horse when i didn´t want him to share a field with other horses bc of the risk of injuries. at least he was outside 10-12 hours a day all year around which he loved and had horses all around him that he could touch over the fence/be close to
Matt. Thanks for this video. It was interesting but. Can you make video of : A day of a top competition horse. Instead of peeking lavish properties It would be more illuminating to see how the elite horses actually live. Their daily grooming routines, training sessions, helthcare programme, feeding etc. Especially how many hours a day horses have to stand alone in the box without any stimulates versus the time they have physical activities and interaction with people. Many of your followers, me included, are quite upset of this video we only see luxury for humans but isolated passive looking horses locked indoors most of the day. We cannot aprove this kind of horse industry but it might be good and kind of comforting to see that there is also an other side: talented fair riders ( like Edwina herself ), best possible vetcare and and professional grooms and staff who's passion and love for horses we don't want to dispute.
It baffled me that some horses don't even go outside in the field and some for just an hour in a paddock where they barely can stretch their legs. I understand that it's risky and we're talking about millions and millions but it's truly nothing more but a fancy factory. A very fancy factory though, it's beautiful ngl.

It is still fascinating for me how any rider can put his needs (wealth, personal gain or enjoyment, fame) in front his or her horse's needs. These days, with the wealth of information at our fingertips with a simple "click", there is no excuse NOT to educate yourself about everything horse related (feeding, caring and taking care of horses correctly).
The worst part is, these people usually know that horses should live in herds, roam pastures, etc., and choose to ignore it, because it doesn't fit THEIR goals.
These horses live in a golden "cage". No contact to other horses to be able to socialize. No or barely 1 hour in a small paddock, probably alone, is not enough pasture/paddock time. It goes against everything a horse needs. It is cruel!
Even Animal Protection law says you should keep and care for all animals, not just horses, in such a way, that you considerate their evolutionary needs.
A horse is a herd animal with a nomadic lifestyle. Even domesticated these needs remain!
I'm sorry but horses are not happy living like this. Sure... It's a beautiful place... For humans. Horses though are happy living in a herd outdoors 24/7, running around, having social interaction with other horses and rolling around in the Mudd! This place is just a Prison for them. I guarantee you, they're thrilled.
All the race horses i work with live outside in big pastures night and day year round, good houses for them to rest in and allways food and water available. Only the stallions have their own pastures, all the others we try to match so everyone can have atleast one friend to socialize with. We have about 100 horses and never get colic issues or such things. The absolute best way to keep horses no matter breed in my opinion.
Horses need the interaction and love from their own kind to still have happy lives! Completely agree with you
Being outdoor in a paddock builds strong and healthy horses. Ligaments, muscles, bones and even organs like lungs, liver and heart gets stronger. Maybe it's because of this more horses die during competitions due to heart failure? And get bad legs and backs. Loved the stables and the arenas thou.

I love the stable but only one hour a day outside? Sorry, but that's just not okay. Horses are horses, they are supposed to be outdoors every single day for multiple hours minimum. For an experienced rider with a vet clinic on-site, I would expect better to be honest. Yes, horses can hurt themselves when they're they're being silly in a big field and yes, that's a huge loss financially if the horse is worth so much. That's the name of the game, honey! This sport has a double risk factor. There are two athletes that can get hurt, not just one like with most other sports. If you don't want the risk, you shouldn't be a professional rider. Try locking a child in a room for over 20 hours a day every day. You think that's okay?
Maybe she should be locked up the same way so she can't get hurt as well. She can only leave her room which has no window and no contact with anyone except when they feed her or she is allowed exercise. Then she could get a taste of her own torture. That poor little mare looked so depressed. The place just looks ugly and overdone for some human's ego. I look forward to a new video from Matt & Jesse of their own place where the horses' mental health is made a priority.
if you do another stable tour I'd really love to see a stable where the horses needs are a priority instead of what people prefer. because at the end of the day that's more important, to keep the animals healthy and happy instead of making something pleasing to look at for people. or do both, that's possible too. I know some people don't want their horses to run around freely in fear of them injuring themselves and not being able to perform anymore but that's not fair, they deserve to live their life freely even if it means that they might not be able to perform anymore someday. they're animals, not just your toy to winning competitions or flaunting wealth!

Hi Matt, I know you like to get us close to some top level riders, which is great! However it does make me sad to see people with so many means (space, money,...) to keep the horses in this way. This venue looks so luxurious and gives a lot of comfort for the riders. But the center of the facility - the horses - are in my opinion neglected.
It would be very interesting to see top riders who keep their horses in a responsible way and put their welfare on nr 1. So stables where the horses go outside, have social contact,... That would be inspiring in my opinion!
Quality however is great as always and love your positive attitude! However we are allowed to be critical in this case...

The aesthetics and design may be impressive but this looks like a very expensive prison for the horses. There is a strong sense that the horses are just 'things' to be used for $$$ and entertainment. Makes me sad to think of these horses spending the majority of their time in gilded cages.
Locked up for a crime they didn't commit is how I see it. Put away like a bicycle until the human needs them for their own purposes again. Sad, sad, sad.

the funniest part was when her "favorite" horse didn´t move a millimeter towards her when she opened the door. if she would put her out on the field she would probably have to chase her for an hour before being able to bring her in and riding her. no bond or relationship whatsoever. lol.

When I saw this on horse world TV I was thinking good is not on UA-cam The comments gonna be brutals as in my opinion she is with her horses.
I love all of the videos on there my favorite is jesse and Annie, you doing gymnastics, and when you guys build a jumping course.
Matt keeps saying, Big, big, big, big, then in the end says nothing when the tiny little flat paddocks are shown, where maybe some of the horses get to stay for one hour a day. I think its beautiful don´t get me wrong, and perhaps they are having so much to do, and such a varied schedule that they do not mind. But even research has shown that terrain that is varied is actually very good for the muscles. This is luxury stables but the design a bit faulty maybe. I know how I would design mine and it would be done by imagining how my horses would like to have it. Possibly even a mud pit since they always seem to find one in whatever field they are LOL

The stable is beautifully designed, it's well taken care of and as a rider I would love it there. But I could not stable my horse there with good conscience.
My horse gets out 7 in the morning and in around 8 in the evening. I think it’s early to go in 4 then think about these horses that are out one hour a day if they are lucky😂
