- This video is about the proper position that the saddle belongs on the horse. It is one of those simple things that so many people do not understand because they have not been properly taught, and it is something that affects the horse more than people think it does.

I'm in my 60's and have ridden for about 40 of those 60 years and even though I preferred riding bareback, NO ONE ever explained saddling a horse this way. THANK YOU! Wow, all those years I was doing it wrong. 😢

One of the best barrel racers is paralyzed from the waist down. Her name is Amberley Snyder. They made a movie about her called Walk. Ride. Rodeo. Never let your disability define you.
I dated an ol’gal who worked for a placed that used horse for paralyzed people. It seems if you lay a person across the rump it strengthens the back. Then when that get done for awhile , you set them up which strengthens the front.
Like the other fellow said; look around to see what’s available in your area. The have that 40 seconds of insane bravery and try.

My grandpa is half paralyzed. It happened from a stray bullet during hunting season when he was young, and he is still riding horses. If you ever want to ride a horse, I encourage you to do so! I know nothing of your life, but I want you to know it's possible for you to do if you ever want to and don't let anyone tell you different. God bless!
I agree, I always remember being told to ensure my English saddle sat just behind the shoulder so that the horse's shoulder wasn't blocked when the horse moved his leg back. Also that the back of the saddle didn't extend behind the last rib.

I just learned the term "yard art" I always thought people were saying "yardark" I had no idea what that meant but when Dwayne said "yard art" it clicked that's wild learned a new word
Loved the video, the closeup shots and as the horse walked away probably thinking "i hope he does not call me back for a second take..."
Ive been riding and wrangling all my life, and when friends ask me to teach them to ride but have no knwodlege of horses I direct them to videos like this. You explained everything perfectly, alligning the concho with the end of their scapula is how I was taught. Thank you for making a quality video I can show people so I dont have to be teaching them for a couple hours with my horses tied up.

What a great demo! I've moved saddles back after noticing a weird change in gait. Thought that was due to shoulder restriction. Loved how you addressed the weight aspect- especially down-hill. I generally place the saddle on the withers then slide it back several inches till it finds that sweet spot where it seems to lock in. Sort of a 'feel' thing. Does that work, too? Would love to hear you address proper fit of breastcollars and different types/uses as they relate to conformation and diciplines. You're a wealth of good info, so glad you pass it along. FINALLY. Thank you for this well informed, easy to understand video with CORRECT information. I'm a horse trainer and western saddle "fitter" (I use that term loosely as most fitters in my area are from an English background and haven't the first clue about western saddles).
98% of the horses I work with or am fitting, they have the tree right up on the horses shoulders. Or even worse, use hollow treed Indian import saddles. I was going to make my own video on this for clients, but you saved me the time-now I can just send them yours.

I havent ridden horses in a very long time. But in that time i never saddled a horse. Only rode them. I didnt know there were proper techniques to saddling. I love learning and learning new things. Thank you for these explanations. It all brought me back to a time when I was introduced to horse riding, as a child. I remember that it is important to connect with your horse, and that they can feel what you feel. So I think that treating your horse right is part of the whole process :)

I already have tried this out, and tried on saddles at my friends' and I am amazed. (See previous comment below). She was fitted with the bars on the shoulders and it was uneven with every tree over a dozen years ago, so I was convinced to go treeless. Now, I haven't minded riding in a treeless all these years, my saddle is super comfortable for her and I, but I will feel a little more secure for cantering practice. I have sent this to several of my horse friends and this will be fun to reevaluate our horses. Thank you DeWayne! I literally stumbled onto this video! I cantered last week in a western barrel saddle and no buck or resistance at all. First time in 16 years that I've owned her!

Unfortunately for me, i live outside of the US and in a place where you can only dream of having enough money to buy land and get your own horses. The people who own a lot of land here are farmers (and godbless them), usually these lands have been passed down and have been in their families for generations. I'd love nothing more than to live a nice humble life outside of a city, with my own land, own cattle and horses. But i know that will never be a reality for me, so dewaynes videos, for me, are a gift that keeps on giving. God bless ya dewayne.

Love this video! Two options for a cinch workaround when the saddle is placed correctly behind the scapula, but due to rigging cinch is too far forward.
The first is what is erroneously called shoulder relief cinch. It's actually elbow relief. The cinch is a curved cutaway shape to allow more elbow room.
The second is take your saddle to a good saddle shop and get it reworked to change rigging position if possible.
The first option is cheaper and better imo. Caveat would be if you love that saddle and are using it on one horse or several that all have same issue.

I rode a lot in Yosemite and I found it helped to anticipate what was going to happen during the first few miles, like if it was going to be really steep uphill I would start with it a little bit forward knowing it would settle back and vice versa, helped not having to stop the string in awkward spots for adjustments.
The best „how to saddle your horse“ video I’ve seen ! As I started riding I struggled saddling my horse the right way and no video did really work for my . I absolutely love the aura in your videos . Keep going!

I was shown this nearly 60 years ago, not near as nicely as you did. An old uncle came out, saw us saddling up his horse. He jerked the saddle off and showed us how to saddle a horse correctly. Only difference he offered to put our back pocket up somewhere between our shoulders.

I cannot imagine saddling fifty horses in an hour. It takes me that long to saddle one horse. Even with one horse I’ve been doing it wrong all along. No wonder he doesn’t like me as I’m already near his carrying capacity.
After this video - hopefully today’s ride goes better!
Of course I’m counting ground work in that saddling time - he’s quite disrespectful and needs to be reminded of our relationship before we start.
Sometime, sir, I hope to see video of you finishing the saddling of a horse...as in, how snug do you tighten the cinch and belly band? And how do you fit a bridle properly to a horse? All their heads are different, too. So many questions I have about proper saddling and bridling procedures! Because a horse's comfort, health, and safety should always come first....especially since they're doing you the service of carrying you around. 😊

Don't worry bout naysayers. I was raised with horses. Was 12 before we got a tractor. Everything was horse and mule. But my father was extremely close minded. His way was the only way. Tied horses up to inter tubes etc.Broke horses not trained. Lord forbid if you ponied from left for ANY reason. Been out of horses for some yrs. Learned a lot of better ways on this channel. Hoping to get back into them soon.

Excellent video. I’ve encountered many a person that didn’t know how to tack up their mount after stating they have “experience”. These same people gall their mount along the cinch line , especially on ones that have recently come off winter pasture.

Loved the video. When i first learned to saddle, many moons ago, i was told to put it behind their "arm pit", that never seemed right to me, but i was a greenhorn. Glad to know i improved. The back cinch was also something that bugged me. I was always told to have space between the body & the cinch. Never understood that either.
