- In a good way. Books mentioned:
Glamorama- Bret Easton Ellis
Lunar Park- Bret Easton Ellis
Convenience Store Woman- Sayaka Murata (translated by Ginny Talley Takemori)
The Blizzard- Vladimir Sorokin
The Idiot- Dostoevsky
The Adolescent- Dostoevsky
Notes from Underground- Dostoevsky
The Castle- Franz Kafka
Amerika- Franz Kafka
Pale Fire- Vladimir Nabokov - Розваги
Notes from the underground is the best depiction of loneliness and despair I have ever read. It's very relevant today. Kafka's most tragic story is the short story, In The Penal Colony. According to biographers most of his stories especially The Metamorphosis were inspired by his fear of his father.
We don’t exist to pay financial debt.
Our lashes are the silk from spider stars.
Our neurons taught our hearts to lose their breath;
a thing in which no tax deserves remark.
If only Anne beheaded Henry first,
we might’ve known his castle was our own.
The servants of a haunted mansion Earth
realize they’re cotton-candy-cobweb souls.
It was you lifting Louis’s severed head.
It is you that deserves to live for free;
you blink the way a butterfly descends-
-the slaves can finally pursue their dreams.
Now, chose freedom instead of some career.
Our fingers must remember Louis’s hair.
my name is Nicholas Leonard, and this is a sonnet tht i wrote
the melodrama painting omg😭i just know you have great taste in everything
Thank you haha ☺️ my mom keeps hanging it sideways no matter how many times I tell her it’s wrong
not the spoilers😭
I tweaked I promise I won’t do it again haha
personally I prefer spoilers so that I know it's worth the read lol
The Idiot is nightmarish because the the positively good and beautiful man reaches a downfall that is not his own undoing per se, while the other characters who are damaged cause their own downfalls. That is at least my take. I think Nastasya Filippovna is one of the greatest characters in all of literature.
Additionally, I recommend: Anna Kavan's Ice as a supplement for The Blizzard. It is sometimes listed as science-fiction, but it is closer to modern allegory (like the film 'Sunrise' by Murnau) crossed with fever-dream. It's a lovely book written by one of the most under-rated authors.
Great video!
You ate that description of the metamorphosis up! Now Im gonna read like all of these 🫶🏽
Yay! Tysm 🪳🩷
I see Dostoevsky (especially the unsung MASTERPIECE of THe Adolescent) I click
Literally THE unsung masterpiece
'The Castle' really captures the essence of Night--whenever I think back on it, I remember the Night. It's my fav of Kafka's books! I mean, it doesn't actually mean anything, right, but--there's never been a better writer than Kafka. He's sooo great that...he makes describing a room super interesting.
Agreed. My first Kafka was The Trial and I was so enthralled and immediately set out to read everything he had ever written. Everything feels like an endless maze… yet kind of funny…
Love that painting on the wall.
Dude same
Nightmarish is my name and now I have to read some of these lol.
you ate. im going on a dostoevsky binge this year
It’ll go from a binge to a lifestyle
Pale Fire is soooooooo good. I can't remember the last time I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable as the book was going on but I also couldn't put it down.
I'm just finishing Kafka The complete novels. His use of language to create a claustrophobic , oppressive atmosphere is precisely what the story needs but at the same time is what makes it so difficult to read. Its definitely a book I contemplated quitting.....I read Metamorphosis years ago. The one thing that sticks in my mind is the sorrow I felt for Gregor. I recall at the time drawing a parallel between Gregor and Frankenstein. Sympathy for the monster and the realization that we are all in many ways someone else's creation. As we grow and become ourselves we have to risk being shunned and misunderstood to become our true self. Thankyou.
Oh yes. Frankenstein also broke my heart 😢
Lovely way of putting it
I don't care if you love me or hate me for saying this because it is the truth and the truth is that you are mesmerizing.
Also, love Dostoevsky
Love Kafka, but oh my its rough. Worth it of course, but i cry each and every time during and after reading.❤
Just started The Blizzard because of you! 19 pages in and it's great so far :)
That’s wonderful news 🙌
Ever read White Noise? DeLillo has a character describes a supermarket as a Tibetan afterlife where the souls that die are conducted to aisle 5 to be restored and rejuvenated by the consummate clarity of cereal box labels, their logos. If I haven't read it I'm sure your experience as a store clerk would give it a personal touch for you. DeLillo writes about the disintegration of the modern human both within themselves and from each other. He thinks the cause is their conflation of signifier and signified, he thinks they fill the void with shopping, and national tragedy
Sounds so awesome I’ll check it out
I'm six chapters into Bret Easton Ellis' new work: The Shards, and there's impending doom all over the place. I'm enjoying it so far, it's hard to put down.
I thought about including it in this video but I feel like I talk about it too much. It’s truly his masterpiece. I highly recommend listening the audiobook narrated by him because it’s a whole different experience. Once time I was listening to it in the car trailing a black Porsche…
The Blind Owl by Sadegh Hedeyat
First time I’ve seen anyone talk about Glamorama!
It’s my favourite book haha
You’re so brave…
Good list! My favourite book I found nightmarish was flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes. I found the way Charlie was treated by those around him absolutely heart wrenching.
You might be interested in the book Ice by Anna Kayvan - I felt deeply bothered and unhappy while reading it in the dead of winter… Anyways, I really liked how you described these books! You have very good taste.
Deeply bothered? Unhappy? Dead of winter? Sounds perfect. Thank you for the rec :) and the compliment
You have convinced me to read more Bret Easton Ellis! Glamorama sounds fab. I'm also very intrigued by The Blizzard, and am hoping to add more classics to my 2024 TBR. So glad I found yr channel ~ᐠ( ᐢ ᵕ ᐢ )ᐟ
yes def check those out! honestly glamorama is in fact fab. and gory. And Thank You :)
thank u for the recommendations
this isn't really the same vibe, but I had nightmares after DNF'ing the Iliad
The Iliad is so terrible (positive) I can only categorize it as raw truth and the reality of man 😩 does dnf mean you didn’t finish? Bc you should
It's on "indefinite pause" 🫨... worry you not, this flaw will be corrected in the near future.. (between 2024 and 2029)
I read Amerika recently and found it kind of dull. Far from his best imo.
Some of my favourite nightmarish romps include The Unconsoled by Kazuo Ishiguro, The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington, The Trial by Kafka and The Man Who Was Thursday by G.K. Chesterton.
Since I don’t own the trial I forgot to mention it completely. I agree that Amerika pretty dull but I found its uniqueness and comedic air to be enjoyable nonetheless. Imagining Kafka writing it made me like it more lol. Thank you for the recs I will definitely check them out!
I have 'Convenience Store Woman' but haven't read it yet. (Sigh.) O' course I'm going to, I swear! However, I have lots o' books, right? You're right about getting stuck working in a store--I know 'cos, well, I've worked in a produce department before and, yeah, thangs get kinda repetitive and depressing...You invariably end up imagining being at all these exotic locales as you're, like, arranging potatoes or tomatoes.
The darkest poet I read was Lautreamont. Recommend him. There is a kind of serious magic that is in his work. He died at 24.
I’ve made note!
great selection of books there. May i make a recommendation? Fernando Melchor's books "Paradiso" and "Hurricanes Session". I read them both this year and there horrible nightmares and soooo well done. She's become a favorite writer for sure.
Awesome. I’m looking forward to checking those out!
loved all the books...Sorokin is on a roll in the moment with lots of current translations...btw, have you seen the Russian film 4, that Sorokin wrote...among the strangest, most powerful and demented of the early Putin years.....let me see if i can find it, but be warned: intense...and if you want nightmarish Kafka--In the Penal Colony and Hunger Artist--his two greatest 'nightmare' stories.....ps. i enjoy your channel...
Thank you! I have not seen it but it sounds like something I’d enjoy so thank you for the recommendation. Those are two of my favorites from Kafka, I think I’ve read every short story and fragment of his actually. Love him
Ice by Anna Kavan
Hanya Yanagihara's A Little Life is in this category for me. Or anything by her, really. Except it's comically given to Deus Ex Machina moments.
We have Kafka's daddy to thank for how he turned out! And yes, I genuinely wanna go back in Time and thank him profusely and shake his hand violently. (If he wasn't such an a@#hole, then Franz would've turned out more jovial and far less imaginative.)
If you think Murata's "Convenience Store Woman" is nightmarish, try "Earthlings" next 😏😼 That job of yours might be teaching you a lot more about human nature than meets the eye
I should add that without knowing about "Earthlings" yet, you anticipated its disturbing qualities within the non-disturbing "Convenience Store Woman." Very perceptive 👍
i also love a good nightmare book haha
You look like Ai Haibara from Detective Conan, lmao!
Hey, Valentina, I really love your videos and what makes you special is because you care about your followers and you have such a good energy that makes us desire for more of your content. I believe you can achieve great things in your life, just keep doing it! It would be a pleasure to discuss business with you. How can I get in touch with you? Have a nice day
But what about Philip K. Dick, his novels can melt your brain and fill it with paranoia. Last time I heard about Glamorama was in a conversation with a friend at a glam party, lots of spandex and painted nude people. It was such a strange party that it stuck in my mind along with the conversation about the book and postmodernism.
you plotting to steal the moon
LMFAO..
@@bookpogo INSANE comment 💀
@@nyahreads I can’t even be mad I literally have vector glasses
@@bookpogo don't be mad you're cute
I have something of meaning to contribute, how about some abstract readings, if kafka compells , read cioran (that any kind of consciousness would have benefited from non existence)
Read Blood Meridian by Cormac Mccarthy you will learn what nightmare truly is
Please write names of the books 😭🙏 I can’t do this mental gymnastics by mirroring your video
I have made note of this and trust all next videos will be mirrored properly. Later today I’m going to add all books mentioned to the descriptions of all of my videos 😭🙌🙌

i totally agree with convenience store woman being on this list lol. have you read Earthlings by sayaka murata? i'd put it in the nightmare category, but def more direct and obviously than CSW
I have not but you’re not the first to recommend it so it’s now on my list. Thank u for the rec :)

De dechets et du sang... ...brulant... ...tus.... Of offal and of the blood... ...burning... ...still.... it is free with kindle unlimited it is a collection of English/French poems and short stories hope you like something if you read
Here is one of the poems it is a poetic interpretation of head of a dead young man painting by theodore gericault
Head of a dead young man
Beneath a canvas coarse and crass, the head of a young man upon a cushion soft and of care; feminine chin; upon the lower lip the blood of God; fine nose; hair of an infant here...and...down there; upon his front, the sublime illumination, that descends, intimately as though of ivory flame.... ...when, of lavender and of rose, ascending vaguely towards the exegetic darkness, the offal; disclosed thus, profound and grave, an immense lesion, as though of a dolourous ulcer...from where all comes...where all returns....
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing, that poem definitely piqued my interest. What is the title of the collection?
@@bookpogo de dechets et du sang... ...brulant... ...tus.... and Of offal and of the blood... ...burning... ...still.... is the title it is a bit of a mess but a good amount of the French poems are in English the short stories in English with some parts in french and little of the English poems in French
@@residentevilzzz3352lolll ok long ass title. I’ll check it out because im interested and because I’ve been brushing up on my French so it’s perfect
havent watched the video but if 2666 is not in there this video is a scam
Don’t penalize me for not having read it 😫

oop! if you thought Convenience Store Woman was wild, you should give Earthlings a shot...it's literally the rated R version of CSW. 🤡🤡🤡
loved this list!!! i need to do more Kafka!
Wait that’s perfect bc I felt CSW could’ve been crazier
