    I just finished the Shards and found it very enjoyable and not at all boring.

      Just finished myself and I agree with you. First you don’t need to read American Psycho or Less than Zero to enjoy this book. They are not the same characters and don’t apply to the story at all.
      Second even though the book is long and sometimes boring bee sprinkles in his dark material instead of just holding it til the second half and bombarding is like with it like American Psycho.
      OP misses the main point which is given by the end and seems to have his mind made up before even finishing it. Did he even talk about the books ending at all?

    • @joefpsunset
      @joefpsunset Рік тому +3

      @@noisez13000 I agree, there is no reason to read Less Than Zero or Amer. Psycho in order to understand or get the Shards. They are completely different stories.
      I honestly never really found the Shards boring. I guess there may have been some slower parts but the characters, the settings, the tension and pacing was great. My only problem with the story was the ending but i'm still mulling that over in my head. Overall I found the book to be enjoyable and could have easily read another 300 pages.

    I get the impression from the books and from interviews that his entire ouvre is one large attempt to come to terms with both his youth and his terrible relationship with his father. Fascinating guy who I actually feel quite sorry for in an obscure kind of way; he's clearly troubled and has spoken about his depression and drink/drug abuse. Kind of the Trent Reznor of American letters.

    Coul have been called The Sharts, by Rated R.L. Stine. Giving it Less Than Zero, makes Lunar Park look like Moby Dick.

    I’m 1/3 way through the shards and I’m loving it. I grew up in 80’s LA and this is the most accurate portrayal of the entire feeling of that time I’ve ever read. Im going to re-read less than zero next, haven’t read it in ages. I’ll likely read American Psycho as well. I love the style of the shards and it’s worth it for me, for the cultural references alone. I was a kid who grew up in Beverly Hills and went to high school in the mid 80’s. This is like reading my life. It’s actually throwing me into a depression of nostalgic melancholy and a total fever dream like memory of everything, both good and bad. I enjoyed your review very much though we disagree.

    This book absolutely shocked me. There’s one particular death that the details made me queasy. Yes it’s long and I do agree overly detailed but definitely not boring

    Might not bother with this one. I very much liked American Psycho, and have been considering indulging in more of Ellis' work (after I finish with Colin Dexter.) But if it's a bit boring, I'll probably skip.
    But will probably read Less Than Zero eventually.
