    This is a perfect showcase of specialization. These men are legendary world champions but they are just average guys when they are out of their element.

    • @semperludens9241
      @semperludens9241 4 роки тому +59

      @@sauceyethan The video showcases that they wouldn't.
      An average beginnner diver is expected to at least be able to do a somersault off of the 5 meter platform, and an average beginner lifter is expected to at least press half their body weight.
      In China children get selected at a very young age for their potential in a certain sport, and then put through a sports university. Which means most athletes in China will be hyper specialized (in terms of training and body type).

    • @tomcheng660
      @tomcheng660 4 роки тому +42

      Mash Exactly, that dude doesn’t know what he’s talking about. World class athletes in their specific field are still a league above the average person in pretty much every other sport/field. I think I could beat either of these guys in table tennis and maybe basketball, but I’d probably get stomped in everything else lol

    • @semperludens9241
      @semperludens9241 4 роки тому +10

      @@tomcheng660 You are quick in saying that I don't know what I'm talking about while maintaining the utmost confidence that you in fact DO. Very modest of you.
      You probably think athletes have an edge over average people because of the amount of training (or because you are from the US where average is leaning towards obese and sickly)?
      High level athletes, especially Chinese athletes are hyper specialized. Lu has incredible fast-twitch muscles, which makes him inherently weak in cardio and limits his flexibility far below the point of a regular less muscular person.
      An average person would have a large physical advantage over Lu in stamina and/or grace related sports, which is most of them.

    • @tomcheng660
      @tomcheng660 4 роки тому +4

      Semper Ludens Very modest of you to say all of that and still somehow try to assume my nationality. You have a point with the fast twitch muscle argument, but I guess we have different opinions on the capabilities of an average person and the various fields that they would compete in.

    • @ErrantChordier
      @ErrantChordier 4 роки тому +18

      @@semperludens9241 not disputing your overall point, I quite agree on the whole, but FYI Lu Xiaojun is actually very flexible, as are most Olympic weightlifters. flexibility is not about muscle types but is mostly neurologic, even hulking bodybuilder Ronnie Coleman could do full splits. supposedly, Olympic style weightlifters' flexibility (not powerlifters) is second behind only gymnasts on average
      another interesting case of specialization is the huge difference between running jump off one foot and standing off two feet. there's a video "Im Körper der Topathleten" part 2 showing an Olympic high jump champion doing a two-legged standing jump and it's pretty bad. turns out that has no bearing on high jump.

      actually the rarest video on UA-cam would be a UA-cam video played inside China criticizing China because that's impossible you go to jail for that. one has to consider when criticizing how China is treated in the press that there is no Free press inside China... Nonetheless both athletes are great.

      @@christopherhanna5754 there are plenty of those inside China criticizing China in UA-cam. That you dont see them doesnt mean they don't exist. I guess you don't understand chinese. Also being a high level athlete, I expect that if he was just a bit scared he would have jumped, so you know that if he's not jumping, he's probably scared shitless of the height.

    Do a fencing vs rowing switch. The two sports are really kind of opposites, and I say this from the perspective of some who proficient in both if could say so myself.

    Should have been done with a springboard diver. Springboard takes more power, similar to weight lifting.

    RE 8:48, for those too dim to - know, Chen is speaking Mandarin, not English
    - click "cc"
    - realize that an epithet would be totally out of context of what Chen was saying
    - deduce that had some else (not Chen, the gentleman) actually expressed that word, it would have been edited out.
