  • I have to admit I got much interested in these little cars after I spent a couple of hours (many, to tell the truth...) playing with them on Raceroom Racing Experience 4-5 years ago and they're still one of my favorite cars on that game. And since that day I've always hoped to be able to film them in action.
Last weekend I had the opportunity to record two of them, managed by the Italian Team Di Fazio at the 2020 Bologna-Raticosa historic hillclimb.
NSU (NSU Motorenwerke AG) was a German manufacturer of motorcycles and bicycles, founded in 1873 that later became a car manufacturer (the first NSU car appeared in 1905). In 1932 NSU recognised the failure of their attempt to break into volume automobile production, and their car factory was sold to Fiat, who used the plant to assemble Fiat models for the German market. From 1957, NSU-Fiat cars assumed the brand name Neckar. After that year, NSU re-entered the car market with the new Prinz (Prince), a small car with a doubled NSU Max engine, an air-cooled two-cylinder engine of 600 cc and 20 hp. NSU is also known to offer the world's first Wankel engined car: the Wankelspider or just NSU Spider (powered by a 500cc water-cooled single rotor engine with a body designed by Bertone).
The 1200 TT you see in this video was introduced in 1967 as a substitute of the Prinz 1000 TT. The street legal car was powered by a 1.2-liter air-cooled inline-4 engine with a max power of around 65hp and rear wheel drive, weighting less than 700kgs. The sporting activity of the three TT models (Prinz 1000 TT, 1200 TT and the TTS) was decidedly intense and not infrequently with noteworthy sporting results. These race car were subject to further increases in displacement, with 1.3-liter engines able to produce over 130hp of maximum power.
The development of the rotary engine was very cost-intensive for the small company so much so that to be saved it was taken over by Volkswagenwerk AG, which merged NSU with Auto Union in 1969 creating the Audi NSU Auto Union AG and represented the effective end of the NSU marque with all future production to bear the Audi badge. In 1985, the company name was shortened to Audi AG. Yep, that's where the name and logo of the current Audi TTs comes from...

I've seen these cars racing in real life. The intake sound is so loud it literally vibrates throughout your whole body. Crazy for a little 1200cc engine!

Words cannot explain the feelings I have when watching these NSU’s. First saw one in high school and have lusted after them ever since. I owned 3 of the 2 cylinder Prinz’s but never even rode in the all powerful 1000 TT or TTS. Wonderful.

NSU? isn't that the first manufacturer that used the rotary engine before Mazda?

Elias Nicolas Miranda Yup. The NSU Spider was the first production car to use a rotary engine I believe.

Yes, but the reliability was horrible. The car was a big sedan for European standards (NSU Ro-80) but the rotary engine gave up after 15 or 20 thousand km. Allegedly they had found a solution but the car had a bad name, so Audi bought the brand for pennies- and soon canned it.

We recently just picked one of these up. The things we need repaired: Fully rebuilt engine, hours upon hours of body work, new wheels, basically rebuilding it as a whole.

Always adored these little things. We used to have a Sport Prinz back in the early 70’s, a white one with red interior. Very pretty little car. My mother’s runabout. Pity my dad sold it when we left Germany.

I had several NSUs in the early 1980's. My favourite was a white 1972 1200TT. Boy I miss that little car. The handling and performance was excellent in standard trim, but the rust was a never ending patch-up job.
