I watched GM unload three of these Monzas at Road Atlanta in 1976 for the IMSA race. They were body-in-white versions with just the numbers 1-2-3 on their respective doors. Porsche was the brand to beat at that event and the Monzas beat them like dogs and sounded fantastic doing it. I still get chills thinking about it. Thanks for the flashback.

Yeah they had Singer put his hands on it, but there are many factors in triumph at Le Mans.. Chevrolet has always been a force to be reckoned with in GT racing tho. Even if it didn't win, it still is wicked fast for a car its size. Probably a lot smoother easier ride than the Porsche
Saw Al Holbert race one at Riverside in the mid 1970’s...breaking the tires loose after every shift down the looong back straight. Ominous sight and sound!
A lot of people bang on about small 4 and cylinder engines from Japan and Europe revving to 9k rpm when you can easily get an american V8 to do so as well.....with push rod OHV and 2 valves per cylinders! Impressive performance and that sound!!
I used to have the factory version but an olds Starfire SX with chevy 305. Probably the best car I ever owned. A true street sleeper. The aerodynamics were so good you could drive with a window down at 70 mph with no wind buffeting. Normal maintenance, no issues, sold the car at 320,000 miles. Miss it.

Loved this. Headphones on and lots of volume. Yes those downshifts were brutal but not to much. It really sounded like he only ran it full headed into the tunnel area. To bad it didnt have full telemetry. Wonderful, wonderful

Great video. I watched Al Holbart race his Dekon Monza at Laguna Seca. It had a 355 chevy engine by Ryan Falconer. Powerful and reliable as I remember.
In the 80's I had a Mustang II with a built 302 and road race suspension for a daily driver. Every commute was a IMSA event and won numerous speeding tickets. I'll never forget that guy in the 944 Turbo who was embarrassed in front of his girl by a primered Mustang II
The IMSA series was bonkers back then. Because today's GT cars are mandated to run production-based engines to be sustainable, we don't really have anything like this anymore. Maybe Super GT.
The new GT3 Corvette for IMSA next year has a 5.5L NA V8 making 600hp (capped by regulations) with 70% production parts. Apparently these Monzas made about 600-650 so not far off. I don’t think stock parts are for sustainability, it’s to keep the cars relatively similar to their road-going versions, and limit costs.

Saw this at the Le Mans Classic in 2018. Easily one of, if not the loudest car I’ve ever heard. You could hear it coming down toward the beginning of the pit straight, and it was deafening as it drove past. An incredible machine.
Reminds me of growing up in Colonial Heights Va. Overbaugh Motor Racing,was in my neighborhood. Terry Friztlee,Hoyt Overbaugh,and Dave. They taught me all kinds of car type stuff. Great bunch of people.😊
Never crossed my mind. I know how those beasts were built. I grew up in the heart of NASCAR Country. They either blow sky high or ran forever. Most of the time they ran forever because they weren't rolling in the $$$$ like today. They MIGHT have one extra Engine at the track if they were lucky.

What a nice little go kart like build. Always like how they looked, and how they defined the economy car of the late 70s. To see this proper racecar version is exciting stuff. Anyone with that won't bother looking at any porsche or bmw.
I had one of these (sans aero pieces). Had to remove left side motor mount, lower the chassis lifting the engine rotating to the right, just to remove the spark plugs on the left bank. I fibbed my own N2O injection system (way before NOS kits). A little brass tube (one for N2O, another for extra fuel), 8 x 0.030in holes in a 1in carb plate spacer, Holley 650 CFM carb. I hid the 16lb tank in the spare tire location. Cutout the bottom of the stock 2bbl carb air filter ..... ahhhh, my sleeper car! Loved it.
My parents had both had Monzas in the late 70's. Neither were as bad ass as this monster. That Detroit V8 burble makes me so happy! As an American, it sounds *just right*
The sound of a powerful Chevrolet motor kicking up to 8-9k RPMs is pure melody, most factory Chevy motors would blow parts at such high rotation speeds (except maybe the LS7)! This Monza is taking out legends too, I see a V8 Lola, Ferrari 312?, Porsche 935 and that mysterious Lancia! Absolutely beautiful video, even better audio....at 12:04 he wasn't sure if he should put it in 5th or redline it instead going into Ascari corner !
That was part of the beauty of old school racing, cars were as different as they could that brought their street characteristics to the track, today FIA regulates everything so much, still interesting just not the same. Thanks for the name of the Lancia👍
If it is indeed a NASCAR engine by Hendrick motor sports SB2 they can run at 8000 rpm for 3 hours continuously.Of course that`s not expecting it to go more than a thousand miles. They are so easy to tear down for rebuilds.

I had a model kit of a monza as a kid, I remember gluing on all the optional IMSA fender flairs and huge tires , years later a friend in high school had a silver and red monza spyder with a 305 V8 we swapped a built 400 small block into it was a pretty cool car, rusted out badly, later on he had an olds firenza and plans to swap a 455 Pontiac into it but it never happened. A 78 camaro took its place. And yes the camaro got the Pontiac motor just for the heck if it LOL!
I just watched an '88 Mustang at Lemans for 15 min. and it looked and sounded as good as this, these two put today's GT3 's to shame, they have some character!

My brother had a 75 Skyhawk which was Buick's version of the Monza. It had a V6 in it but he put huge fat tires on it and dual side pipes. It sounded like a tractor to me heh.

My former boss won road Atlanta in either 81 or 82 I forget which it was.
It might be less effective and slower, but this 1976 IMSA monster has a million times more character than present-day Formula 1 cars.
So does a Trabat.
Since character often comes with age, it's no wonder the Monza has more character.

Too young to know better. They have no clue that a little engine HAS to wind up to make any power. Rpm means little to me.

Bought 40 at my drag strip every week end.
Chevrolet made a lot of them in Brazil, but there it was a inline four FWD. Chevrolet just call them monza, even knewing that it is a vaux cavalier.

Lancia beta Montecarlo turbo group 5 is the one you're looking for. Pretty much the direct antithesis of the monza featured in the video.

@Sam Sonite over reving downshifts is a choice. Setting the rev limiter under 9k is a choice. IGNORANCE IS NOT A FUCKING CHOICE.
