No, it's not the success. It's how he lost hair, gained fat, and now has the appearance of a groggy 50 year old. And his brand of comedy is much more nihilistic now. It just tells you how age eventually catches up with you.
Louie is like pizza, even bad pizza is still pretty good. He's always been clever but you can see him holding back and not trusting it. Now he's the man. THE man.
This one's so much tighter and entertaining than the other video trending at the moment! Thanks for the upload. He's such a unique case of someone out there for years, honing his voice, and finally finding recognition. What a guy...
It’s interesting to see The development of his joke telling . It’s necessary to go through the process . He’s a very talented human. There is something very refreshing to see his innocence .
Dear non comedy people; A stand up comedian is going to suck for years before he becomes a solid comic. A football star plays 4 years in college, 4 in high school, and maybe more than that all before he makes it to the NFL. And being Louis CK is way harder than playing football.
@Nelson Robert Willis Louis said that the first times he did it he sucked so hard he quit for a few years and gave up on comedy. And then as you can see with this early stuff he's not so fresh.
Irritating Films being Louis ck is harder then playing football just like doing stand-up is easier then playing professional football at a high level. If you asked Louis ck what do you think is harder, doing your job or being an all star football player what do you think he’s going to say? 😂😂
Of all the crazy things a time traveler could do, to go back to this dude and tell him that in about 20 years he would be the among the greatest comics alive. Every now and then you catch Louis CK in this act. Man is he young though.
+penkata drums : We may be referring to the same thing. CK does a lot of voices in his bits that I think even he would acknowledge sound like a silly, queeny gay man (and he does them very well ;) )
I finally decided to watch some of his old shit like this after his self deprecating humor about how much he used to suck but honestly, as far as 1980s comedians go this isn't THAT bad.
+thenekom It certainly has similarities to his current stuff. It's just like the current stuff is more vulgar and much more daring when it comes to topics. It's a similar formula back then, but it is toned down a lot. As he started to care less, he got more harsh and better. At least that is my take on his stuff.
I fully believe that how louie said he used LSD when younger while on howard sterns show, that it altered his personality like it is known to be capable of doing and changed his perception of reality and enlightened him which is why I believe his comedy and personality changed so much. He's definitely enlightened and it shows in his genius way to talk about very deep things while making people laugh.
+Dyloone Done it again everyone lives life and has experiences, that doesn't mean your going to become someone who is able to think about things in a different light that always comes to deep conclusions about your experiences. He could have just got lucky and that was the person he developed into, after all I'd like to think most people learn and become more aware the older they get. However if you ever took psychedelics you'd know exactly what I'm talking about, it can completely change your personality and your perception of reality to where you'll see deeper meaning in things without trying. It Meade me more sensitive, changed the way I think, and took away the hatred I had for this life
+Dyloone Done it again lol, I I know your joking but I'll answer with a serious statement anyways for the fun of it. Some psychedelics or maybe all, idk, can possibly drive someone mad or negativity effect their personality, but idk if this is with all or just some, or if it depends on the person as well. In some places, psychedelics have been used a very long time by cultures in places like Peru and brazil, and they use them as spiritual practice. There's also some small studies now being done and some from a few years ago that said people who took mushrooms had an experience that they considered to be one of the most important things they'd done. In one study mushrooms were given to people with terminal disease to help them coupe with their condition, many still felt the positive effects from when they used mushrooms nearly a year later. I used mushrooms but didn't have a wide open awakening experience, but It did alter my mind. I found myself thinking abstract ideas and started to see a deeper side of everything. I also had later experiences that changed me so much to where I fully believe I was in the "matrix" before and didn't even know it. It brought me great insight and a comlete change in my perception of reality, as well as some very tough battles with myself, but everyone is different and will react differently to different things. Anyways, I was surprised to hear louie say he's tried these. But its interesting because if you look at the most enlightened comedians there is and ever was, in my opinion: dave chappelle (talks conspiracies etc), louie (talks social and psychological truth) and George carlin (conspiracies and government truth), it just so happens that they all had tried psychedelics before. Carlin even said on Chris rocks old show that using them woke him up, and thats when I believe he turned into a hippie kind of anti establishment comedian and grew his hair in the 70s.
Seeing how mediocre he was back in the 80s makes me respect his career all that more. Was a really bad in interviews too. It took genuine WORK keeping that interview flowing smoothly with some levity.
He does the "burst into flames" bit in every early set I've watched. It gets a pretty big laugh here and I don't understand why. I hate it so much, it's not even a joke. I hate the way he delivers it. I hate the audience for laughing at it. I hate myself for letting it get to me.
I think that’s a bit far. He looks quite younger. But he’s still a dorky ginger. You know what’s funny… I didn’t know he was a redhead. I just know his bald head material. This is funny seeing his old stuff, how different he was. He has developed into pretty much GOAT.
no beard, hard to recognise him. much funnier that I would have expected based on his own recollection of how he was back then. don't be so hard on yourself Louis!
He was so good looking, he doesn't realise, he just has no game... just none. And he would have come off worse back then because he would have seemed really arrogant. He was and always has been hugely funny, ahead of his time and original.
+punkybrewstar83 I agree hahah. He has a pretty nice build, shall I say. His later stuff where he talks about himself had me thinking that he was overweight his whole life or something. Nope!
the clock spring in one of my hondas went bad, so I wired it to a switch I mounted on the dash... so if I turned the horn on and didn't turn it off, it was just on... not a good way to have a horn set up.
4:02 Whoa, out here in CA, Long's Drugs was around for years before they all got bought out by CVS in 2008-09, so it's weird to think they've been around since at least 1989.
his voice sounds so young and full of hope
lol
I know. It's actually depressing seeing this.
+Dhruv Golani
Why? He's so fucking successful now. This Louie would be ecstatic that he will one day be one of the best comedians in the world.
No, it's not the success. It's how he lost hair, gained fat, and now has the appearance of a groggy 50 year old. And his brand of comedy is much more nihilistic now. It just tells you how age eventually catches up with you.
Being 22 will bring that hope...
Louie is like pizza, even bad pizza is still pretty good. He's always been clever but you can see him holding back and not trusting it. Now he's the man. THE man.
He talks very fast here, you can tell he's nervous
What a great comment. Louie is like pizza. :)
I was 6 months old when this aired, who woulda thought I'd grow up to worship this comedian
He had to retire that hairbrush joke lol
This one's so much tighter and entertaining than the other video trending at the moment! Thanks for the upload. He's such a unique case of someone out there for years, honing his voice, and finally finding recognition. What a guy...
you are most welcome...
So crazy to see a raw diamond who hasn't been really shaped yet.
This is the hour he promised us was bad. Honestly an absolute pleasure to watch
I'd love to see 2015 Louis perform the dolphin joke in the opening of a special. Wonder how that would pan out.
god that was embarassing... I felt bad for him. at least until I remembered how good he got in the years
It’s interesting to see The development of his joke telling . It’s necessary to go through the process . He’s a very talented human. There is something very refreshing to see his innocence .
This set was better than 100% of “comedians” you see on kill Tony

He didn't even suck. He was just starting out and even keeping that in mind, he was at least decent
Welp louis has come a long way for sure XD
Heizman A year late but still didn't expect to find you of all people here!
He really has but honestly I thought this was pretty good! And does he look young!
Of all the crazy things a time traveler could do, to go back to this dude and tell him that in about 20 years he would be the among the greatest comics alive.
Every now and then you catch Louis CK in this act. Man is he young though.
I only believed it's him when I heard his voice... ;)
Me too, so unreal. What a major change.
+penkata drums : All of his "voices" still strike me as pretty gay. I think he missed being gay himself by thismuch.
PhillyFrank1 Well I didn't mean gay when I said faggy... he taught me that (;
+penkata drums : We may be referring to the same thing. CK does a lot of voices in his bits that I think even he would acknowledge sound like a silly, queeny gay man (and he does them very well ;) )
+penkata drums and the faces
So much optimism in his voice
I finally decided to watch some of his old shit like this after his self deprecating humor about how much he used to suck but honestly, as far as 1980s comedians go this isn't THAT bad.

Yeah, and he doesn't look as bad as he claims now that he looks then.
*****
Indeed. But you can already see his hairline pulling back here.
+thenekom Yeah and I actually find him pretty attractive here...I didn't expect that!
It’s pretty good actually, just not legendary.
Thanks for posting. First time I've seen this, so good it was hood to see some of his early material.
You are most welcome...
So he had to sell his hair to the devil to become a good comedian. Now we know.
Play at 0.8x speed for current Louis
Imagine if after 30 years of comedy the epiphany he had was he had to speak 20% slower than when he started
He is so adorable!
Damn his comedy and his appearance have really transformed!
He was 21 in this video
Pretty good material for just starting out. Damn that audience was brutal.
its meh
the hairbrush bit was so good. this guys hilarious
Man, he was so cute.
Only if he had a thick hair like this,he might be still looking close to his young self now.Good god,he was really handsome here.
Cosmic Azazel looking like someone else lol
I don't think it's just the hair. He's also gained a lot of weight and aged considerably....
In what world is that hair thick?
He was 22 at that time! WOooow!
this is so trippy
Mushrooms will do that...
I was expecting dissapointment like with many great comedians on their earlier shows but he was good.
I turned 8 years old on this day
Little did I know this man was on his way to becoming the best comedian ever
He was pretty good even back then.
Man… he grew as a comedian.
+grass hopper i just started watching some of louie old stuff and thought of the same thing!
+grass hopper or you know he got life experience, from living… life
+Dyloone Done it again everyone lives life and has experiences, that doesn't mean your going to become someone who is able to think about things in a different light that always comes to deep conclusions about your experiences. So you're saying I should get these magic drugs
+Dyloone Done it again lol, I I know your joking but I'll answer with a serious statement anyways for the fun of it. So he's 21 here if the dates are correct. That is adorable.
It’s Jerry, George and Kramer all rolled into one
This guy's average at best. I'm sure he'll get better as he gets older.
Louis is fine wine. was crappy vinagery grape juice back in the day but got old n fat and became hysterical,, how's that possible?
This guy has no future in stand up comedy...
Not anymore...
greyztone why what happened?
Yeah, he definitely was uncomfortable, but still not horrible, at least you can relate to his material.
I thought I saw George R. R. Martin in the audience.
He did the exact same hairbrush joke a year earlier on this exact same show lmao
DeepwaterDoor2 and the horn bit is just reworked and elongated
Back in time when Louis looked veeeery good and was a relatively lame comic on his way to become an amazing one.
Guy has been making people laugh since before I was born
So glad he put on for his mexican heritage when mexico was brought up
Poor CK still faces laughter whenever he mentions his half-Mexican ethnicity. He really doesn't look even a bit Mexican.
The only thing that you can recognise is his expressions... lol
omg he was lowkey handsome
I don't understand why the crowd starts laughing when he says he's half-Mexican. 7:22 That look on his face...
People always forget Mexican is a nationality and not a race lmao. Plenty of white Mexicans
Look at all that hair :-0
Damn he's young. Hard to believe.
This material is much better than his 1988 stand up on the same show!
AmirAli Tn how did he live with those same bits for a year, is my question. reworked or elongated versions of the same bits.
He's come a long way.
man he has improved a lot
2:37 that lady's LSD just kicked in.
piggy201 lol
🤣🤣🤣
This is a month and half before I was born. Louis the OG.
wow he was awsome in 1989 too
Seeing how mediocre he was back in the 80s makes me respect his career all that more. Was a really bad in interviews too. It took genuine WORK keeping that interview flowing smoothly with some levity.
This host is creeping me out ...
+NigtMareZero He's a fucking hack...
+NigtMareZero Yeah. What the fuck is he even talking about?
GBS What is he smoking would bet he better question oO
He looks like the dad that was killed in Leon the Professional.
Gilbert Alexander
Bwahaha!
Adorable.
He does the "burst into flames" bit in every early set I've watched. It gets a pretty big laugh here and I don't understand why. I hate it so much, it's not even a joke. I hate the way he delivers it. I hate the audience for laughing at it. I hate myself for letting it get to me.
Boy you’ve got to get a life my man
I feel the same way lol. There's something about 80's crowds that just makes them seem dumb.
8:00 was not expecting the braided pony tail
Lmao they didn’t believe that he was Mexican
I don’t get that. They do know that there’s white Mexicans right?? Like they speak Spanish for a reason
He is quite good looking here
I think that’s a bit far. He looks quite younger. But he’s still a dorky ginger. You know what’s funny… I didn’t know he was a redhead. I just know his bald head material. This is funny seeing his old stuff, how different he was. He has developed into pretty much GOAT.
Not gonna make it
waht. I'm only 15 so I've never seen any of Louis' old stuff. he looks SO DIFFERENT without a beard and with less fat. love him
he has so much energy haha
OMG!! It IS him!
no beard, hard to recognise him. much funnier that I would have expected based on his own recollection of how he was back then. don't be so hard on yourself Louis!
He was so cute!
Another canelo cinnamon . And people laughed when he said he was half Mexican 😂he is for real
Whatever happened to this guy? He had some good material.
That hairbrush must have been from like a shark's second row of teeth cause boy did it do a number on him
wow in 89 I didn't know what the fuck I was doing. now louis is rich and famous and im still broke and still don't know what im doing.
Most relatable comment
He got funnier with passing of time but Father Time fooked him up physically too quick 😂
Nope!
Sharon Stone
I just think he is all around handsome
Me too :)
yeah. he just needed to slow it down, and use more inflection, I think that's the word I'm looking for. Louis is not funny as a seemingly happy man
no offence, but i dont think this guy is going to make it
He's very good in 89 lol
It's like a completely different person lol
Nice i haven't seen this set! 👍👍👍👍
He was so cute and hot. I love him
Look at that jean jacket, wow.
OMG, I lost it on the hairbrush bit. help me.
This shows how far you can go if you practise.
This is so cool.
Wow, he changed so much!
Wonder if this guy ever became anything. Doubt it...
Was that GRR Martin in the audience?
the clock spring in one of my hondas went bad, so I wired it to a switch I mounted on the dash... so if I turned the horn on and didn't turn it off, it was just on... not a good way to have a horn set up.
This is so cool. Louis before his GOAT stage and Anthony Kiedis before the Chilli Peppers..
the host looks like the lovechild of al franken and david johansen
The host is the guy who opened Louie's recent special with all the dreadlocks
Great!
wtf is george rr martin doing in the audience lmao 5:26
This guy aging like homer simpson
4:02 Whoa, out here in CA, Long's Drugs was around for years before they all got bought out by CVS in 2008-09, so it's weird to think they've been around since at least 1989.
wow he was basically famous since young
Working On a comedy stage does not mean you’re famous
Girl in the Air Force sweater at the beginning... suuup :)
Who in the heck thought this dude had what it took to be a host?!?!
The host comes across as a mean guy who doesn't like Louis and is trying to make Louis look bad.
Louis' caterpillar stage.
Haha hasn't formed yet
Who's the goofy looking creep in the jean jacket
Mike McDonald, apparently - check the description.
