Fascinating how he reworked some of these ideas into masterpieces in later specials. The plane stuff and the bank stuff definitely is an early form of later material. I guess all comedians do that, rework old premises and find something new in them. Very interesting to watch.
He started out as every other comedian. Young and optimistic, saying unconnected jokes. But he evolved to an amazing story teller and a real life philosopher. And yeah, he achieved the "hilarious" status in my book at least.
Another good example of comedians getting enormously funnier over decades. This is a good short bit. But nowhere near the level of nowadays where all you have to do is hear him talk for 10 seconds and you’re rolling on the floor. Standup is extremely difficult. Often takes a really long time for them to find their prime. I have a lot of respect for the people that do it, regardless of how funny they are.
He just started to find his comedic voice around that time. He struggled for a lot of years. I'm righting this in 2022. I'd say about 5 years ago he was the best in the world. Now he's still one of my favorites. Still top 5 for me
Damn, Louis was naturally talented but he honed his comedy into a sharp knife. This guy knows his audience and further more his delivery just got better and better.
I'm from Maine and got excited because I thought he was going to really say something in the Maine accent like "how's the weathah bub?" and then he just did that.. 😂
I jokingly do a bad spanish accent on purpose cause i don't want to seem like i'm showing off (especially since i can't speak it that fluently). Only when i'm having an actual conversation i'll try to speak to the best of my abilities.
What's amazing about this video is that he was good, but he wasn't anything spectacular. Probably on par with most other comedians. But now, he's one of the best, and you can see exactly how he tightened up his craft to get to that point.
@@84Elenai None of them should be a top 3 except Chappelle. It's observational comedy. Even in their TV shows they basically just them recounting life events they had. They don't actually tell any jokes.
@@TrueMartin wow, how pretentious can a person be? You do understand humor is subjective yeah? Telling another person who should or shouldn't be on their list of favorite anything is about the most ignorant endeavor.
Very «Seinfeldy» here. I saw an interview he talked about doing stand up on Conan and he had to re write a lot to fit the Conan audience. I guess this would have been more funny if he didn’t have to clean it up.
What makes his comedy work is how stupid and obvious the punchlines are/should be. And how simple his premises are. Simple, effective, minimalist but provocative
Yea they were weakly provocative here… Although the act probably had to be entirely clean for television. He probably hadn’t starting jacking-off in front of women at this point too… That made him funny.
Boy did Louis ever step up his game at some point! This should be a requirement for every struggling comic to watch, and see that pretty much the funniest guy around used to absolutely SUCK too!
It's crazy how good he eventually became at stand up. He look very uncomfortable here despite doing it for over a decade at this point. He got super excited when the crowd reacted to his plane joke which he ended up retelling on Conan not too long ago. I've always hated how comics repeat things to the crowd like Jimmy does in South Park. It just ruins the flow and makes you look insecure and banal.
Wow his airplane bit was this old?!
jstdun you’re on a chair... IN THE SKY
Agreee i was surprised too lol

Incredibly
It's literally 20 years old lol

WOW YOU THINK? DEEP INSIGHT THERE! YOU MUST BE A PHILOSOPHER!
He got funnier the more life beat him down.
His comeback material will be golden
I thought the exact same thing
Jared Franke new special is out! Its called sincerely:)
To be fair, we all do. 🤷🏻♂️
@@momomama642 yes I bought it when it came out! I'd say I've rewatched it 5 times since then!
2:15 i love that thing he does where he says something, and then clarifies it. Like "I was on the runway...in a plane"
He started out as every other comedian. Young and optimistic, saying unconnected jokes. But he evolved to an amazing story teller and a real life philosopher. And yeah, he achieved the "hilarious" status in my book at least.
He polished the fuck out of his aeroplane bit.

He was pretty deep into it but mid-2000s is when he figured it out

Funny how he pretends to have a typical white-guy-speaking-bad-Spanish accent when his first language was Spanish.
He only lived in Mexico until he was 7 or so and said that he has since forgotten most of his Spanish.
I jokingly do a bad spanish accent on purpose cause i don't want to seem like i'm showing off (especially since i can't speak it that fluently). Only when i'm having an actual conversation i'll try to speak to the best of my abilities.
You’d still have better Spanish than most bilingual speakers at 7 if that’s your first language.
Livingtree32 you can't forget a language if if you spoke it for the first 7 years of your life
@@RagingBad he said most of his spanish. Plus if you don't use it very often it'll start to become less fluent.

He's much funnier now than he was in 1997
Yupp! Same goes for conan! I their comedy aged like fine wine
Yeah, somehow 20+ years of practice can make that happen.
You should see him in 1988 lol

I have to say Louie is impressive. Imagine not being funny for 20years and finally at the age of 40 he becomes one of the best ever.
The bank bit was good lol
It’s crazy knowing how great he became and then watching him bomb. I have heard him talk about it but it is still weird seeing him struggle.
Never heard this jokes except flying planes. I hope he will come back even bigger star
7:00 hey that shot looks familiar
He did the same bit in his next conan on the couch . Much better pacin and everything . His pauses got much better
29 y.o. Louis

The more Louis C.K. lost hair, the funnier he got. His 2035 special when hes a cue ball will cause accidental deaths for sure
He's like Samson in reverse.
the one about going into a bank with a gun really killed me hehe so silly
The actress is his (ex) wife
I never felt jelaousy between Conan and Louis

The asking the girl out on a date punchline was super seinfeldy
Who dressed Conan in this episode? He looks like he's wearing his daddy's grownup clothes!
In comedy, you get good by failing a lot.
That were the 90s?? holy crap I'm old...
He looks so good with that Moustache and Beard combo 😉
man richard lewis is a good drummer
😂
Whatever happened to these guys?
Lol first thing I laughed about was the tie, Louie is the best
He just got more self conscious
No mic ?!

The greatest ever but he was not good before the turn of the century
That's his wife in the clip.
That first joke was pretty bad lol
Wow this was such an old bit for him
Wait a second... the lady who's looking for Nixon is his wife Alix Bailey right? Wow, she was hot back then...
Oh man, that opening joke fell about as flat as it could 😳
This Definitely wasn't in 97
Yea, it was lol. Why do you say that?
@@zachbarber3211 cuz he looks 45
He was going bald by 2001/02 so it's definitely before then. Guess he always kinda looked older. Plus Conan's set looked like this in the mid-late 90s
God Conan acted and talked really really weird
So many orangness out there
His ex-wife was a looker

He will fail as a comedian.
He sorted did I guess
Nah, he made it. The Me To movement cut him down for no reason. He's coming back. Good on him.
Louis CK in 1997 was like the annoying co-worker who thinks he's funny trying to be personable. Glad he got bald and miserable. 😂
So this just proves my theory that he’s never actually been funny
