From so many instrument possibilities, choosing the tuba to do the solo created a dense, dark mood. Could have been a cello given the high range, but I believe there would be too much temptation to play the line more lyrically. The haunting low wind was a great orchestration Choice. The performance was very well conceived and executed by the tubist. 🥂
cool, but the tuba ravel orchestrated for was much more similar to an euphonium in the high range. In fact most orchestras let an euphonium play this solo nowawadays
Tuba bass , key F Originally Ravel had 6- valved euphonium key C [French's tuba ]; in this mode euphonium key Bb is acceptable but Ravel didn't score doubling because French's tuba can playing lower than common euphoniums. Bass tuba F or French's tuba C/G 3+3 are legitimate for all Mussorgsky-Ravel Tableaux d'une Exposition
yes; tubas have issues staying in tune regardless of how good they are or how well they’re tuned before a performance, so most tuba players learn to use the tuning slides while they play to sound better
To add a little more, it's an issue of math and physics, not of instrument quality. Valves add length, but note pitches are exponential, so if you use more than one valve, you will be sharp, unless the valves are tuned to be flat on their own. For example, if you tune middle C, the B below, and the Bb below that perfectly, then A, played with valves 1 and 2, will be one tenth of a half step sharp. In addition, the open partials of the horn are never quite in tune with reference to equal temperament or even a perfect theoretical harmonic series. Even open octaves are not always in tune, though on a good instrument with a good mouthpiece they should be very close. With 5 or 6 valves it's possible to get close enough that you can lip everything up or down to hit pitch without pulling slides, but many people prefer to adjust slides and play right down the middle of the slots to get better tone.

I really don’t know who was better: Mussorgsky for composed this masterpiece or Ravel for orchestrated like the gods
Tuba bass , key F

Is his left hand playing a tuning slide?
