I am reminded of Victor Buono's (1938-1982) remark about hearing selections from _Madame Butterfly_ sung in German ... "out loud...."

Vilmos Horváth to be fair it didn't fit at all this piece, there is no way to deny that. As much as he is a wonderful player, the timber of the instrument at this speed and register is way to muddy and heavy

I actually personally much prefer listening to this piece on tuba over violin. Much more singing and fluid, and the ability of the tuba to lend a lilting quality to the fast passages gives the piece a more mysterious, wintry feel. I had never much liked the piece until I heard Baadsvik play it, probably because the violin is just too strident and edgy a tone to really convey the concept of the rich, deeply silent, eerie peacefulness of winter.

He makes double pedal b flat clean and at higher octaves his sound is comparable to that of a French horn or euphonium . His range is amazing yet that is not good enough for the Japanese. They expect him to match a trumpets triple c. Jk this guy is the best Tubist in the world. He makes me want to go out there and purchase my long lost love that I use to play some decades ago in highschool and college band.

Heh. I played tuba through high school and college and toward the end of my college days, there was a contest at some event that involved no-hands digging for jelly beans in a dish full of whipped cream. I finished 3-4 times faster than 2nd place, and the people who set it all up decided that had to be a fluke and reset it and I dominated just as thoroughly the 2nd time. Not sure if had anything to do with the tuba experience but your comment did remind me of it... :D

Listen to the trumpet lines in a recording of Bach's second Brandenburg Concerto. Trumpets in Bach's time did not have valves. There were vent holes along the air column, but most of the changes of pitch were achieved by varying the embouchure. It is also possible, incidentally, to play the same notes with different combinations of valves. Finally, note that this tuba has five valves, not three or four, and it may be possible that the operation of the fifth valve by the thumb could be so subtle as to go unnoticed by a casual observer. Or maybe not. I'll have to watch this five or six dozen more times.

    • @keyankaderi

I dabble at the tuba. I love the tuba. Mr. Baadsvik is as good as anyone in the world on the tuba.
The first movement and the faster segments of the third are excellent reminders that not every instrument should play every piece of music. That velocity makes these segments an interesting curiosity that reminds the listener of what the piece should sound like without actually doing so.
The second movement and more lyrical portions of the third, conversely, allows Mr. Baadsvik's musicality to shine.
Bravo for giving this a whirl.

That should not be possible. It should fry the circuits of the recording devices and lock up the anything used to reproduce the sounds, let alone the video. The tuba itself should annihilate like antimatter. This raises quantum paradoxes that Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein, and Wolfgang Pauli working as a team couldn't parse, with Weinberg hollering encouragement.

Got to say, incredible skill, mind blowing, I play brass and can appreciate that, staggering it is. ...And I love the tuba.
However, this piece just doesn't move me.
I think it's because, when I listen to this with the violin in place of the tuba I hear the ice crackling, the cold splintering air... all that stuff, it's there in the timbre of the instrument and the subsequent balance of the arrangement.
There's none of that here, for me and from such a player that seems a bit... careless? All I hear is the tuba, the tonguing, the speed of rapidity of the fingering, the staggering range... But my absorption in the piece as a whole is gone. It doesn't say anything other than 'master class'. Most obviously, the tuba just doesn't sound very wintery, to my ear.
There are so many pieces that could work as displays of skill AND work as a whole, musically. Mmm. There's something just a bit wrong about this.

I think you can definitely tell that he tried to recreate the sounds that the violin in his place made.
