Mastering Diagnostics #4: Building A Customized Data PID List
Вставка

- The idea behind data analyses is not to fix the vehicle but to determine what is working properly. This will allow you to focus on far fewer possible faults to perform your hands-on testing on. The data captured should be arranged to tell a story that any properly trained technician should be able to evaluate and make a diagnostic decision. I’m going to show you what made me successful!

Nice video Brandon
Thank You!
OMG Brandon .... this really is an eye opener, as to the POWER of this scan tool in the right hands! Your videos are invaluable to me as a shade tree mechanic. Thank you so very much.
Proof that 'Knowledge is Power' ... if used correctly..
Lloyd, your feedback is greatly appreciated. I'm glad we could shed some light under your shade tree!
"...I'm not trying to find out what's wrong with the vehicle, I'm trying to find out what is right with the vehicle..." Extremely important statement, great way to attack it, and absolutely a great way to put it simply...thanks for sharing all of your experience with us Brandon!
By the way, I've always admired your speaking talent, style, and approach, you're very well spoken.
Pauly, thanks a million. We appreciate you viewing the video and the positive feedback.
I have a Phoenix Smart and absolutely love that tool. The history folder is a great feature and I didn't know you could replay a road test data file. Thanks for sharing that, I'll be using that feature from now on.
Perfect! thanks for the feedback. I'm glad we could demonstrate a great feature for the tool you have.
WELL DONE!!!!!!!!
Love this series Brandon. Looking forward to next one. Thank you!!
Awesome, thanks, Spiro!
Awesome Brandon and Motor Age Team , keep up the great work and videos
We really appreciate your feedback, Robert. Thank you!
Thankyou Brandon, looking forward to the next one.
Thank you, Grunter!
Tremendous tutorial ! Clever ! Thanks for sharing this valuable time saving and logical approach to looking at prime data .
Excellent! We trust it will serve you well with a little bit of practice!
Hello Brandon,
Not a video goes by where I don’t learn something new from you. I appreciate your efforts in improving all of our skills. I hope you and the family are doing well!

Thank you very much, Dave
Awesome keep up the Great work, lov your videos
Wonderful, thank you!
You mentioned learning the old to understand and apply to the new. I've been saying that my whole life! It applies to everything. Sadly that is where education systems fail.
Spot-on...It's popular for a technician to seek out "advanced" training. the feel if the understand the "advanced" it overwrites the "Basic". We both know that certainly isn't the case.
Thank you sir.
Thank you for viewing!
I took a class taught by you once.
Great! I hope to see you again in class sooner rather than later.
Great videos 👌🏾👌🏾💯
Thank you very much!
Great video
Thanks, Mike!
Excellent info here! Thanks. Question... do you have any videos or guidance on high positive fuel trims only at idle when engine is already hot from a previous drive? Wife's 07 2.4L Camry shows total FT around 18 under those conditions, but after a short drive to next traffic light where vehicle can idle, total FT is back down much lower than that. Can't find vac leak with smoke test. No codes. Thanks.
I would be referencing the MAF PID (in grams per second), and both the pre- and post-CAT HO2 sensors (or wide-band sensor) to see if they are telling the same story.
Will recording Data PIDs during routine services like oil changes provide enough value to use as point of reference when faults do occur.
Frequently, when I had vehicles in the work bay, I would look at load PID values (You'd be surprised at how different the PIDs would present depending on what the engine was designed for). I looked at these numbers so frequently, the PID helped lead me to an engine with tight bearings and ultimately led to an engine replacement. The Load numbers were the clue I needed.

Much appreciated, Nick. Thank you!
JUST A QUESTION ,,,,,,,,,, WHAT IF ON THE VEHICLE I AM WORKING ON I CAN'T GET OBD 2 DATA AND ONLY CAN GET ENHANCED DATA POSSIBLY BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS AN IMPORT RIGHT HAND DRIVE FROM THE ASIAN MARKET . IT DOES NOT HAVE OBD 2 ONLY ENHANCED DATA . HOW WOULD THE DATA PID LIST CHANGE FROM WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO WHAT I ACTUALLY WILL HAVE TO BE CHOOSING SEEING THAT I WOULD HAVE TO BE USING ENHANCED DATA . LOVE THE WAY YOUR GOING WITH YOUR CLASSES PLEASE KEEP THEM UP THIS IS SO NEEDED THANK YOU BRANDON STECKLER 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍
Excellent question! Similar data is available from both data lists. Just keep in mind that the info may present differently. For instance, I may not have AF RATIO available on the enhanced side. It may just be offered as AF SENSOR CURRENT or VOLTAGE (and that differs per vehicle).
@@brandonsteckler3417 THANK YOU SIR,,,,,,,,,, IT SOUNDS LIKE WHAT I REALLY NEED IS SOME FORM OF PID CROSS-BRAND MANUFACTURE DECIPHERING MANUAL AND PLEASE KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK !!!!!!!!!!!!🙏👍
@@brandonsteckler3417 OR MAY BE,,, ITS THE BRAND OF SCANTOOL ONE IS USING AT THE TIME SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT .
@@brandonsteckler3417 BY THE WAY I WAS USING A LAUNCH SCANTOOL AT THE TIME .
@@8power0 , this is the reason I acquire data from the OBD2 PID list. IT crosses brands with almost nothing to be left to interpreation for further study. it is a "apples-to-apples" comparison across brands.
Brandon can that EVAP purge ever cause a too rich code? Just curious if its something I need to consider. I understand if the purge was leaking it would always read rich with a full tank. But does the PCM account for this added fuel vapor and discount that extra fuel while the purge is being commanded on as part of it's strategy for this scenario? I hope that made sense sorry!
Excellent question! Factually, some vehicles strategize to account for canister hydrocarbon load by "learning" a totally separate fuel trim value for "purge enrichment". Said another way, you will not see much trim during purge because the PCM has already accounted for it. However, you can see that my vehicle (2007 Honda Civic) does not employ that strategy, and compensation is handled through traditional fuel trim. If a canister gets saturated with fuel it is possible to have a heavy enrichment that cannot be compensated for, and rich-DTCs may follow.
@@brandonsteckler3417 thanks for the reply and info it's much appreciated!
