I think he did an interview for Guitar Player in 87 - 88 that was the last interview I read about him. Very unassuming yet gifted player. Comparison? his style is not as bluesy as Slash. Slash is way accurate but Reb has speed and his grooves are right well bluesy too but he transitions into the hammer-ons like a Patrone' margarita, double margarita. Winger was lucky to have him.
I started to play guitar right after i seen this video, three years ago. I still love Reb Beach playing, he's my inspiration, he makes me feel real desire for playing guitar. Thank you Reb! You Rock!!
Agree on inspiration...but id been playing 4 years, just starting to get pretty good, learned some harder songs/solos, learning to improvise lead that finally didnt sound like just playing scales, could even throw in a bit of tapping...held up with most with exception of really fast stuff (which is what i wanted; 80s shread). Then i saw this...amazed yes, but also disgusted how epic and technical this was compared to me. Definition of "80s sound", and so good i knew id never reach this so i quit playing guitar for a long time lol. Surely someone that plays has had this happen once in their journey?
I was 13 years old in 1989. I remember first hearing his guitar work with Winger and was floored ever since and has been and still is my number one guitar hero!!
Reb has developed one of the most beautiful tappings in guitar history! The technique and sound of the phrasing in tappings is magnificent!!! One of my favorite guitarists... my favorite solo is "Rainbow in the Rose".
I can't believe that people still mention this "RB trashing on KH" thing on most of Reb's videos. it happened like a trillian years ago ... personally I like both. but if I had to pick one as my guitar hero, it definitely would be Reb Beach. I love how he works his right hand. just enjoyable to watch.
I saw Reb at a guitar clinic in Dallas. There wer only about 30 of us ithere that night . Reb is a stand up guy, very cordial towars fans. My friend was the Ibanez rep at the time and was ther with us. I got my autographs and was leaving and my rep buddie said, hey why don't you stay awhile. We are going to let the others leave and hang in the back jamming and drink some Heinekins. Had a great time. Play'd with him and watched in awe. It was wayyyy kool. Rebs so underrated.
I never realized that there was a debate on whether Kirk Hammett or Reb Beach was better. But really is there any comparison? Reb is infinitely better.
Well...it was winger that first made the comparison. It seemed much more a jealousy of Metallica’s success than about anything else. Reb is phenomenal. But Kirk certainly is good too. Kirk will certainly go down as more of an inspirational/ influential player than Reb, and rightfully so. Kirk has probably inspired more kids to pick up a guitar. And Reb has probably intimidated several to put it away.
@@kcb5336 I agree. Kirk is much more of a household name than Reb. Reb is just far more technically skilled. That style caters to more of a niche audience, though.
@@guitarguru.3572 True, it’s like comparing Eddie Van Halen to Jason Becker or Yngwie. When it comes to musicality and virtuosity, the latter two take the cake, but in terms of influential or popular, Van Halen takes the cake.
One can only imagine the relief Reb felt out there in the Brazilian woods when he finally found the perfect material for the neck. Quite a player he is...🎸💥👍
Great tune from the first "Guitars that rule the world" CD from 1992. I believe it's the first track. Lots of great tunes on that album from some great players including Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt, Alex Skolnick, Richie Kotzen, Paul Gilbert, Richie Sambora, and others. Check it out if you have never heard it.
@Crimson Idol He's not a bad player at all, in fact he's one of the best when it comes to adding the required parts for a song. However the others mentioned are all virtuosos who transcend basic guitar levels.
Back in 94, I first heard this song , 2024 and still exited to hear Reb beach play black magic , such an underrated guitarist, so clean and unique . My kids now listen to him
One of the best, pure players walking our planet. And severely underrated!! When you talk about Reb, you START with the word Brilliant and work your way up.
I wish modern rock artist would write music that has this much energy and enthusiasm incorporated in it. All rock music now seems to be so gloomy and depressing. The 80's was definitely the pinnacle decade for rock music.
@@nickwaters1701 The 60's and 70's built up to the 80's, and the early 90's carried the lasting remains of the late 80's, but after that music generally went downhill and never truly redeemed itself after that.
Im actually baffled that there is actually a debate going on between who is the better technical player between Kirk and Reb, there is no debate, only the FACT that Reb is superior.
Kirk was great back in the 80´s, but better than this guy? xD Almost every guitar player in the roster is better than Kirk lmao, and Kirk is a very strong influence on me.
junito1957 Don't the first guitarist to bring tapping to the mainstream. EVH may seem more simplistic especially since he was one of the first, but he does not 'just make noise'. His playing has a lot of feel and a unique style of his own. Also, odds are, without EVH, all the other names would never have been mentioned. Respect.
Many musicians did their best work high on something, dope or the booze lol By your definition, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, Slash and Jimmy Page, heck almost EVERY musician from the 50's to 80's are not greats.
you know, after listening to this song over and over again, he really smokes. i love it. we dont need to compare him to lynch. Reb rocks! i love them both now!!!
I grew up listening to great guitarists and all genres. Regarding the Beach and Hammett debate I share this. Two different styles based on their band. Kirk is a position player and restrained in his early days to fit the Metallica mold, but listen to solos from "One" and "Unforgiven" when he was allowed some freedom and it still gives me chills. A great player! As for Reb Beach, he is tasty in his playing and had a lot of creative freedom early in his playing, but his soloing was not as remember able as Kirks. I found that since Reb wrote both rhythm and lead that his rhythm playing was catchy and way better than his soloing IMHO. Again, an all around great player as well. Kirk has been boxed in, but he could shred back in the day. Keep in mind that EVH was not an instrumental soloist like Satch, Vai or Yngwie but he is Mr. Riff Extraordinare. Great players, all different styles and band concepts. Rock on!
@Crimson Idol I think Kirk, just like Lars, got complacent with his level of playing, and lost his conviction to evolve further technically. It's not surprising, given the success they achieved by the early 90's. To be fair to Kirk, he actually had pretty decent chops(except for vibrato) and some pretty solos up until The Black Album. He just... kinda lost it all. Same, as Lars.
Name a Reb Beach Solo better than anything Kirk did on the Black album back to his days with Exodus? I'll wait.... I love Reb, but he's never had a solo better than "One" or as well known. He's always been a back up guitarist for the most part and he even admits it in interviews. Still a very good guitarist with different tone and control, but he's a better rhythm player with catchy hooks than a soloist or pure lead guitarist.
Chad Owen well Hungry and Headed for a Heartbreak are better without putting much thought into it. Many others like Rainbow in the Rose and Madeleine are probably better as well.
Reb's a very good player who combines flash and taste, and thats a good thing in my book. Great to see this solo from the VHS I lost years ago. thanks for the post.

Always loved Reb's playing, and this piece is a perfect example of why. He is pretty much the reason I got inspired to get into tapping. The guy just KILLS it in this video!

All i have to say is reb beach is freakin awesome dude can make his guitar scream and this song is so epicly awesome such great shredding rock on mr.beach rock on my dude.

Really nice and Polished/consistently impressive!

people usually focus on people like Malmsteen (which is also a very good guitarrist but less accurate shredding)
In retrospect, this guy had a super unique sound, and after all these years, will now stand out from the crowd.
Definitely unique. I think in a weird way it feels a lot more contemporary (whatever that means) compared to a lot of the shred-lords of the 80s.
criminally underrated IMO ... this is one of my fave tunes of all time .. keep coming back to it
