Without TTK I don't think Destiny would what Destiny is today. During that leading up to this expansion, it was a make or break for Bungie in many eyes.
It’s crazy how it’s been 7 years now, and this is easily one of the best expansions in gaming ever. I remember really getting into Destiny at launch, and the joining the army early in 2015 so when I finally graduated basic training and AIT, TTK just came out and Destiny felt like a brand new revitalized game to me at the time. Forsaken was the only expansion to ever come close to how amazing TTK was. Great video as always man.
I remember booting up that Phobos mission for the first time seeing the cabal drop ship spot you and not shoot you seeing the cabal crawl away and die seeing centurions being taken before your eyes and then you fight the first taken enemies in the boss fight along with the song that plays as and after you fight the boss the bass like synth cords are my favorite part about the taken king soundtrack
Still my favorite expansion. Gave us an incredible story which has only been topped by WQ, an amazing addition to the lore in the form of Oryx and the books of sorrow, and one of the best raids we’ve ever had. Thanks for doing it justice.
I vastly regret not being invested much in the holiday content, especially Crimson Days and SRL. Those Shaders, Ghost shells, armor and sparrows and horns all were awesome and I mostly missed out.
I first got into Destiny during TTK, what a magical time in gaming. I think the Festival of the Lost came out when I started playing, I was so confused about what was going on haha. Now my Level 400 gaurdian feels like a badass walking around the tower. Thanks for making these great videos down memory lane
Man I love The Taken King. I pretty much started Destiny with it. (I owned Destiny already before TTK but my internet was so bad I would get error coded 90% of the time before I even could get to orbit.) I can still remember the feeling of just starting it and everything feeling so new having the weapon foundry greens dropping a lot and all the cool stuff on the dreadnaught and tons of UI changes.
I don’t even know what to say. The Taken King is a masterpiece. It gave us a story that was actually fluid. It gave me one of my favorite antagonists in a video game that somehow rivals Dr. Eggman and Majora in Oryx, whose effects are STILL seen today in the Destiny universe. It gave us the coolest destination filled with tons of secrets to discover with the Dreadnaught. It gave us a bunch of amazing Crucible maps and Strikes. It gave us great weapons, great armor, great ships, great sparrows, great shaders and on top of that: It gave us one of the coolest raids in Destiny history. King’s Fall may not be my favorite raid, but it’s still a top 3. All the quality of life improvements were/are outstanding. If Forsaken didn’t exist. This would easily be the best expansion in Destiny’s history. But as it stands now, it’s still phenomenal.
12:55 Remember during Crimson Days at that time people complained heavily that they could not get a 320 Ghost Shell from the Kings Fall Raid (320 was the max gear score at the time) making people revisit the forever level 29 but was forever gear score 319. You didnt need to be 320 cause hard mode Kings Fall was like 310 it was more for completion reasons . When Crimson Days launched a 320 Ghost Shell was the incentive to play and it dropped randomly from the match completion. Remember on Reddit r/DestinyTheGame people where killing themselves in the Crimson Doubles PVP gamemode to speed up the games to keep trying to get the 320 chocolate ghost shell.
6:11 The taken king actually released with 9 new exotic armour pieces. Twilight garrison and The ats/8 tarantella released a while after the taken king’s launch in an update, and the thagomizers, shinobu’s vow, ophidian aspect, astrocyte verse, dunemarchers, frost-ee5, and transversive steps were actually saved for release in the rise of iron dlc.
Where people saw a drought like you said a time to breath take your time enjoy the content at your pace; and events to sometimes check in every once in awhile. It’s something I miss in destiny I feel like if seasonal content would wrap up more stuff in at least a solid month instead of extending it to 2 months with a month of nothing usually. Time in between to play other games and relax but always come back for trials or banner or to do some raiding or pvping D1 taken king into Rise of Iron were very chill times honestly
One thing I'd like to add about the lack of 1:1 infusion was the raid gear also didn't drop above your level, it was completely random. You could be 319 trying to get one more piece of gear but it keeps dropping at below your level.
Everytime I hear Regicide or Last Stand I get chills. IDK if it's because of nostalgia or because the tracks are that awesome or probably both...but yeah
I can't wait for the video either. I don't remember hearing about any new DLC before the little nanites started popping up on people's heads. Once I looked into the names of the new buffs and eventually landed on the Owl Sector website and realized this was part of an ARG, after what Taken King brought to the table, I was incredibly hyped for whatever was about to happen. I assumed DLC or new game because I remember stumbling on ilovebees back in the day which turned out to be a very covert Halo 2 ARG that gave people who solved it a chance to play the new game early and some of my favorite Halo lore to this day so I was hyped to see what would come out of Destiny. Outbreak is to this day one of my all time favorite story beats in any game because of the themes and complexity of the ARG. Taken King really got me into the lore with all of the calcified fragments but Rise of Iron got me to don my spinfoil hat and deep dive.
This is still peak Destiny for me, the buildup to this expansion was probably the biggest due to vanilla & the first two DLCs not being anything too crazy and the game still being overall new in general. Now that the formula has been established there isn't really anything as drastic happening in terms of content offering, such as then to this. Outside of D2 into Forsaken probably, but there was still an established iterative design there due to the familiarity in gameplay and what to expect overall. I remember around TTK buying redbulls for the promotion they were having where you'd get an "exclusive" mission to get a sparrow & ghost shell before they'd eventually add it for everyone. And then the controversy with the collector's edition content and how people were comparing it to ODST, which eventually made Bungie decide to sell the vanity content standalone if people wanted to purchase it. And not to mention the VIP rewards for those who purchased the first 2 DLCs or were light level 30 before TTK. Ah, the memories are flooding in...
AYYYYYY ITS HERE! I'll play on the vid on .25 speed for your watch time my man. Ill be doing my gym workout so i wont be using my phone. Hope it helps!
September 15, 2015 is seared into my brain. I quit Destiny 2 in October 2017 and have moved on now, but my gawd the Taken King and Kings Fall were beautiful times with boys who I have long since parted ways. Tuesday marks 6 years since Rise of Iron, another beautiful time with fond memories. Nothing in D2 holds a candle to these glorious times
@@AntwonJenkins I've watched the cutscenes, it looks good but my life has moved on from Destiny now. Nothing in D2 holds a candle to the beauty that was D1 Age of Triumph
@@deusvultpictures6550 To each their own. I quit Destiny 2 for 2 years. I was done, thought I'd never play again. I can safely say I'm having the best time in Destiny right now SINCE D1. Once a guardian, always a guardian.
Fantastic video! This was the year I joined destiny albeit a bit late. I joined a month before Rise of Iron launched since I was able to score the game for €15 including all current expensions. I got so many good memories of my friend carying me trough all 4 campaigns at the time and getting exotics he didn't even own for the 2 years he had been playing, Poor guy. I remember him prepping me for Rise of Iron, doing all the strikes. VoG and Crota, yet not kings fall, I didn't play Kings Fall untill Shadowkeep time sadly, not that I didnt try to convince my friend lol. This brings back so much nostalgia, but also a bit of a lamenting feeling having never seen SRL or the original Crimson Days. Luckily I got to experience CD and Doubles in D2 later, I forget if I played it in RoI. Great video! Cant wait for the Rise of Iron, My first expension I was there for since the beginning. the true Nostalgia for me.
Nice video, good tempo and script, keep up the good work. Fantasically to reminiss over the old D1 expansion. But 7 years ago??? Where has the time gone.....
Oh my Goodness. I forgot so much about the Taken King. Court of Oryx was my gig for months. I loved that. The entire Dreadnought was my playground for months. That was the pinnacle of Destiny. None of the expansions in D2 can come even close, maybe Forsaken. The last few were lackluster for me. Witch Queen comparing to The Taken King...Oryx's sister did not deliver for me. Next DLC looks great tough. Let's hope.
I wasn’t too bothered about the long break in content after the TTK. I worked on my Grimoir score and reset my male Warlock as I always thought the Warlock Armour looked better on a female character 😁 at one point we even glitched into an area on the Cosmodrome where a lone Thrall would constantly spawn and that way I got my sidearm kills Grimoire…lol, had waaay to much time on my hands back then 😂 Oh yeah, doing sparrow barrel rolls over Hells Mouth on the moon gave entertainment for days 😁
awesome video and recap, loving the series...but IDK that you can say SRL was massively popular, pretty sure bungie said the numbers of people that played it didn't justify the investment.
The Taken King is my most favorite time period in all of Destiny. It was so gotdamn good. If not for TTK I probably wouldn’t have gotten back into Destiny. Kings Fall is my all time favorite raid.
I remember grinding out srl, being super awful at it but eventually getting first place in every track and getting the emblems. bungie gave em away basically for free later... still mad about it.
I really like King's Fall in the fact that we actually chase the main bad guy of the expansion into a corner basically and finish him off in the raid. Savathun didn't feel the same because she died so easily and the raid felt like it was something completely different, even though it was still cool and interesting. I would just like to see another raid like king's fall where we corner a very powerful being and finish them off after a tough fight.
I remember the day so well when TTK was released. Sitting in a party with my raid team waiting for the download and then finally..download finished! We split into 2 fireteams, set the other fireteam to mute to avoid spoilers and started the campaign…2 days later and we had been playing non stop with maybe 4 hrs sleep in between 😂 The best expansion ever made for D1 or D2. We were “ready” for Kings fall on release ( at least we thought we were ready ) and jumped in with a solemn pledge to finish it on our own without checking strats from other teams…it took us 2 days to finish it but when we finally defeated Oryx the sense of accomplishment was the strongest I think I’ve ever had in gaming and I’ve been gaming for over 30yrs now 😉 Then we returned to the tower to show of our new Raid gear..it’s a great feeling!
Destiny 1 is still far and away the better complete game compared to D2 in my opinion. Everything about the game is more accessible, complete, and fleshed out. Strike playlists are amazing, crucible is diverse, Trials was competitive, Iron Banner was a fun monthly event, PoE, Raids, and patrols seemed worthwhile and open. Destiny 2 just doesn’t hit that spot for me. Forsake came damn near close, but the strike playlist and crucible was not nearly as fun and peak Destiny 1 days for me. Age of Triumph update completely made each and every content portion of past DLCs worth it with specific loot. I still log on a few hours each month to go back and play with some newer players and maybe get a Nightfall run in.
My best friend and I really became best friends because of Destiny, and especially Taken King. He got into it a few weeks before HoW and at first called it a Borderlands clone but over time he came around and we would play every day just us 2 or my sister would get on and the 3 of us would play all day over the summer. When TTK came out Ray skipped school to play but I wasn't allowed to luxury so we beat the campaign as soon as I got home from school that day. I remember the final boss for the No Time quest you had to make him angry and somehow we glitched it and made him go 133% angry and about 9 million taken minotaurs spawned and absolutely skull fucked us, or the time when we would glitch out of the map because we were bored, or when we were screaming at the top of our lungs panicking to kill the our specific sword knight and Alak-Hul in only a minute, OH and swinging Dark Drinker into the push back barrier in the Undying Mind strike right before the boss and get launched all the way to Baghdad, or when SBMM was so bad some guy made a video on me calling me the world's biggest cheater in Destiny because I tanked his sniper shots but on my end he's not even on my screen. Or the time spent in orbit just talking about life, school, drama, ya know, the works. So many nights I'd stay up past when I was supposed to shut the PS4 off and go to bed but we just had to play one more game of skirmish or rift. We truly became best friends over that year and we both still play Destiny, he even streams it and has his own YT channel for the game (it's SunRayze if anyone wants to check it out, he does pvp videos kinda similar to SirD). But man I just feel old I can't believe it was 7 years ago that I was 14 and in 9th grade and now I'm 21 and graduated college to be going back next year but in all that time I still play Destiny with my best friend. And although TTK holds a very special place in my heart RoI takes the cake for my favorite expansion, but that's due to an outside world factor. Idk I'm rambling at this point but thank you for making this video.
Content drought meant by the end of Y2 my Crucible rank on all 3 characters was higher than my Vanguard rank. I was top 1% in control. Not , I hasten to add , because I was so good, but because I played so much.
all that tells me is crucible was in a much better state than it ever has been in D2 because nobody is playing PvP in D2 for that same duration if they had a similar Drought in D2.
Yearly expansions need to be focused on large overhauls like TTK and Forsaken to keep the game evolving. Seasonal content and updates are just bandaids that mask the larger problems that have been languishing for years at this point
During the current run of D2 we will never see the type of change that The Taken King brought to D1. Perhaps when the light and dark saga come to an end the game will get a massive rework, that's my hope anyway.
This is what an expansion is, expanding on almost every part of the game for the better, destiny 2 expansions are more of an addition instead of expanding on bad/broken/under usesd areas of the game to be better it just adds more things that feel half assed and will be changed or removed later on. Not to mention the gatekeeping of content so it can be saved for a dungeon key or some shitty season.
Yeah, this expansion shaped all things Destiny from that point since. But not everything was bright. Oh no it wasn't. Anyone who did not like it's risen price (thus didn't purchased it) was punished, dearly, in every front! The 2.0 update butchured all you gear. It nerfed you in such an undescribable way... You dealt less damage to combatants while you take more damage from them, when before the 2.0 patch you were a lot more powerful with the same gear. That patch was the first form of what we now know as sunsetting. As a non TTK owner, players couldn't go beyond 170 light, and the worst is that only green and (very highly and costly modified) legendary and Year 1 exotics could even grasp that hard cap. Blue gear drops were 150 light at best. And that was just PvE! For non TTK owners, PvP was so frustrating! To begin, since the max light cap was 320 that meant no morr Trials of Osiris! It got paywalled. Most of crucible got paywalled as well, leaving non TTK players with a measly 'Classic Playlist'. This classic playlist turned into a KD farming for expansion owners! Why? The new, paywalled subclasses, to nobody's surprise, were effectively pay to win. Don't dare question that. I remember those days were TTK owners picked their fights on classic playlists only because of the higher population and the farming against who didn't get the expansion. It was not fun getting stomped by sunbrakers, nightstalkers and stormtrancers. The same thing happened with Beyond Light's Stasis when it was new! Good thing I wasn't there when that debacle happened... but I was when TTK butchred the game's experience and feel who, for whatever reason, didn't get the expansion. At least at full price. So no, not everything was cool and great and this kind of videos should go more in depth with 'the other side' of the story.

I can’t even imagine how Destiny was before this!
Glad I could help you remember all the good times you had in the franchise! Rise of iron video coming out in a few days
Content drought meant by the end of Y2 my Crucible rank on all 3 characters was higher than my Vanguard rank.
I was top 1% in control. Not , I hasten to add , because I was so good, but because I played so much.
all that tells me is crucible was in a much better state than it ever has been in D2 because nobody is playing PvP in D2 for that same duration if they had a similar Drought in D2.
man i miss the good ol days of when bungie really put their heart into destiny
Yearly expansions need to be focused on large overhauls like TTK and Forsaken to keep the game evolving. Seasonal content and updates are just bandaids that mask the larger problems that have been languishing for years at this point
During the current run of D2 we will never see the type of change that The Taken King brought to D1. Perhaps when the light and dark saga come to an end the game will get a massive rework, that's my hope anyway.
I can remember the first time beating Oryx back during TTK, i ran downstairs and told my family I just killed Oryx! Great times 😂
😂
This is what an expansion is, expanding on almost every part of the game for the better, destiny 2 expansions are more of an addition instead of expanding on bad/broken/under usesd areas of the game to be better it just adds more things that feel half assed and will be changed or removed later on. Not to mention the gatekeeping of content so it can be saved for a dungeon key or some shitty season.
like the series. brings so many memories. best years of destony :)
Ahhh new PVP maps. I forgot we ever got those.
D2 needs to bring SRL back as a permanent game mode
And Bungie is still making us run Fallen Saber strike
just imagine we had 72 vault space, now kids cry that they have no space when their vaults at 600/600. man how far have we fallen.
I'm gonna start a new destiny character
The Golden Age of Destiny :')
Don't forget we paid for a cutscene skip button 😭
I don't care what anyone says the oryx boss fight music is the best ost in this game.
8 whole pvp maps you say eh
DLC we will never get again.
Hearing that we got *8* maps before taken king even dropped is baffling. D2 has fallen off hard.
back when they actually cared about the core content
Man this expansion gave us so much. And every expansion since has given us less and less and less. What a shame
Destiny 1 is stil the best it was never die
Best $40 ever spent on destiny
yay :D

Love this new series I was looking forward for the TTK expansion explained ! Keep up the great work!❤️
