If you’re a lover you’ve gotta be a fighter. Because if you don’t fight for your love, what kind of love do you have?” - Oryx, the Taken King
Muhahaha nice!
That's a quote from Keanu, why bring TTK the credit?
@@avengedforever1421 because it’s a joke
For someone that fights that taken every single day of his destiny career, this is insulting. I think their allegiance down to nothing almost, and they still come back, and you call me a lover of the taken king shame on you.
I don't know. He once tried to take me into a group where I could make a lot of money by bringing in 3 other people underneath me and they they would have to being in 3 other people and so on and so forth...
Oryx: Any last words?
Me: How's your sister?
I would be absolutely enthralled by an episode on the weapons we receive from King's Fall. I'm definnitely gonna cast my vote for that episode next, if I may

@@optumis1433 WHERE IS THE GREAT MACHINE
Oryx's views did not align with the Witness's views of the final shape. It's a common misconception that he did. Oryx wanted to test the worth of everything in the universe by his sword. Ultimately wanting the Hive to be one of, if not the last species to exist. He cared about the Hive, his main goal being that they would live forever. The Witness wants everything to cease to exist. It doesn't anything to remain. The Witness's final shape is nothing. Oryx would not agree with that, as he wanted the Hive to persist.
Edit: It is in my opinion that the Witness's views do not align with the darkness's and it merely uses it's control over it as a tool to benefit it's own goals. I always believed that Oryx's views aligned more with the darkness. As if he understood the darkness more than the witness, or the witness just didn't care about what the darkness actually stood for.
He wanted his species to persist towards the Final Shape of the universe, much like how Calus wanted to be the last living thing standing before the shape. Overall, the Disciples of the Witness would’ve competed against themselves for the sake of trying to be the last to stand in the presence of Nothing.
Its also worth considering that we still don't know if the final shape is the last being to exist in the universe or an alternative form if it's empty nothing.
Its very possible that oryx and calus are just interpreting the witness differently and the witness doesn't give a shit because they're both ultimately serving him and his goals
I believe in the shadowkeep lore with the winnower and the gardener the darkness tells oryx that you don’t have to kill everything to become the final shape, just enough to remove all obstacles. I feel like this doesn’t get talked about enough that there were many different views on the darkness, and one of the big reasons i felt that the witness abandoned rhulk was that he was incapable of thinking for himself. He embodied the witness views and saw anything remotely different as them challenging the witness
Perhaps the Witness is actually letting all of its disciples think that THEY are the final shape, leading them on leashes until it’s too late to stop it.
the Vex were the final shape of life in previous cycles of the universe, before the gardner broke the rules and the flower game collapsed. they want to be the Final Shape again, hence why they use time travel, to make themselves essential to the universe.
oryx wanted the final shape to be the Hive, and through through survival of the fittest was proving it pretty well.
the Witness is imo utterly omnicidal, there will be no final shape, there will be no more cycles of universes, just an infinite nothing. a complete breaking of the cycle. everything and everyone that serves the witness is just a tool to that goal.
i think we'll see many villains betray the witness once they realise just how destructive the witness' goals are.

Does King’s Fall’s return have any consequence to the story? Will Oryx truly return as Savathun said? Can a force of evil such as Oryx be resurrected as a guardian like Savathun? What chance is there that we fight alongside the light-born hive against the witness? We’ve see the darkblade be reborn as a lightbearer, is Oryx next?
No
No. From what we have been told by bungo this is simply just a returning raid and has no story implications
it’s a moment in time raid like vog where it doesn’t have anything to do with the story

@@RiptidexRiltreks lol chill bro I’m aware now. Was just an interesting occurrence that Savathun predicted it
As a D1 Vet I have had one big question about this raid; WHAT IS BOMB LOGIC?
How does it play a role in the final encounter?
How does it differ from Sword Logic?
Why was Toland mad about how we defeated Oryx with it?
Bomb logic is defeating your opponent through complexity, taking many pieces working together and therefore the antithesis to the Sword logic's single piece acting independently.
We defeat Oryx by "assembling" darkness bombs rather than facing him one on one, acting together as a team to defeat him.
Toland's mad because he's a proponent of the Sword Logic which states that there must always be a "most powerful" and by defeating Oryx we prove we are more powerful (embodying said logic), but then we refuse the throne essentially disproving it by not dominating everything with the power we could have had.
@@DavidManser sounds cool
For simple terms it basically means using your mind to win the war rather than simply using your fist or “sword”.
A video about oryx’s relation with the witness would be cool
Hey Byf, just wanted to say that despite bouncing off Destiny back in the original Vanilla version, I've kept watching your vids because the narrative and world of Destiny is immensely compelling.
I'm thinking of coming back for Lightfall and am trying to convince my two friends to make a Fireteam when it launches. But to try to get them up to speed on the lore is so daunting. Do you think making a video before Lightfall comes out that does a quick sparknotes on the major events leading to them, as well as the major players/antagonists could be in the works?
Either way, keep up the good work
He did a few new player videos leading up to Witch Queen, but unfortunately he hasn't continued it. I'll edit my comment when I find the videos, as even if they are slightly outdated with the launch of witch queen, they're still helpful for getting the basic gist of destiny's universe and the characters and factions in it.

@@cfriesen222 i mean why don’t you do it yourself???
@@cfriesen222 I think the best you might get from Byf is like his "Destiny 2's Story So Far" video from some years ago. Iirc it's about 2 hours long and described the story from the start of D1 to the end of the season at the time. If you're wanting just prep for Lightfall, Byf has a number of videos on Calus and The Witness each, which will be the main antagonists for the next expansion (as far as we're aware atm at least).
Beyond that, you'd have to expect a lengthy video/series of videos. Destiny's lore and history is super complex and in-depth. Yeah you can get the surface level information, but just the base campaigns alone take multiple hours to run through. One campaign could probably be cut down to about 30 minutes if you ignore a lot of the "unimportant" stuff. But there's been 7 expansion/main campaigns, combined with the myriad of seasonal campaigns. All those together will create a video that's easily 5+ hours long, which you've said you don't want.
So again, if you just want prep for next expansion, watching Byf's videos on The Witness and Calus would probably be your best bet.
@@cfriesen222 yeah no. People like you who had 7 years to get the story lined up can just watch the byf recap.
Don't gut the Destiny experience for these noobs any more.
I'd really love to see the taken Taishibehti Emperor Raven at some point. The thing is supposed to be so large Oryx in the final encounter is just a dwarf in comparison.
Also, the time it takes for Oryx to go from the middle to one of the plates is about the time it took for taken Emperor Raven to completly obliterate it's kind.
Personally, the description of Doom of Chechis (if that's how you spell it) is my favorite because how simple yet haunting it is. I'd love a video talking about him!
Hey Byf. I want to know more about the Raid weapons. Zaouli, Chelchis, Drystan, Merain, Yasmin, and so on. I feel like there's some lore behind these names and I hope there are some lore tabs that you can find so you can read em. Thanks for this video too. I'm very interested in this raid.
Well those are all names of people that Oryx is responsible for killing. Chelchis is the former Kell of house stone who was killed during the eliksni whirlwind. Some of the others were awoken soldiers killed during the battle of Saturn.
@@zombieslaya3456 We need like some cool cutscene that takes us down to memory lane and shows us how chelchis fell. That must of been intense. The elinksni looked different too then.
Definitely an episode on the weapons of Kings Fall. It seems to me that the names are all of powerful foes that Oryx triumphed over, except Touch of Malice which represents our final triumph over Oryx.
Since this videos is about Oryx life, it makes sense to speak of his defeat and the touch of malice next. It would also make sense to go through each raid encounter leading up to that moment.
Theory: Rhulk was banished to Savathun's throne world for being envious of Oryx -- a being he not only predated, but he ushered into existence by seeking out the worms of Fundament. He wanted to understand why he wasn't given the ability to Take, or as close to the Witness as Oryx. Rhulk failed to see his place in the final shape -- a disciple, not a king. A follower, not a leader. He was sent to Savathun's throne world to realize his place in the hierarchy
@My name is Byf
It was not the Witness that gave Oryx the power to take but the Darkness itself, in WQ Savathun herself says that the Deep also granted Oryx all the secrets of the Witness's powers, and that Oryx wrote these secrets in the Tablets of Ruin, Savathun uses part of the Tablets of Ruin she stole from Oryx to learn the Witness technique of making planets "disappear" and move the Traveler to her throne world.
It is quite evident that the connection that Oryx has with the Darkness is greater than the connection that the Witness has with the Darkness, it is said in the lore that Oryx is the only being in the universe that knows the secret of taking, which implies that even the Witness not knows this secret, Savathun for example knew how to control the taken but not take, probably the same happens with the Witness they know how to control the taken but not necessarily take.
There has been a lot of division in the community on whether The Witness and The Darkness/The Deep are the same entity. I, as well as many others I'm sure would love to hear your personal theory on the subject, perhaps with some lore evidence to go with your thoughts
I can't remember if it was a video or podcast but a few months back Byf and some others were talking and Byf's main theory was the Witness is not the darkness and the Traveler is not the light but each has some unknown connection to the origin of each paracausal power.
@@caster269 one of my theories is the Traveler (or the entity controlling it) and the Witness are avatars of the Gardener and the Winnower. The Gardener wanted to add a rule to the flower game which we call Light, and so to keep the balance the Winnower added Darkness.
This next part is pure spinfoil but I think it neatly explains why they have a physical presence at all. I think that since beings with Light or Darkness are above basic cause and effect, they are no longer pieces that can be played. Instead, they play themselves, which would basically take the two original players out of the game, unless they made pieces for themselves to place on the board. Can't touch something without being touched, so these pieces are in the physical world and are incredibly powerful but defeatable.
Alternatively, the Traveler and the Witness could be beings like us who started in the material world and rose up to become champions of the Light and Dark eons ago. If they're ascended mortals it could explain their flaws.
This had already been explicitly confirmed in Season of the Chosen last year during Presage. Savathun-as-Osiris says "Not the Darkness. The Entity. The Voice in the Darkness." It was the first time the two were explicitly differentiated. The Pyramids and their related relics (like the Splinters in Beyond Light) are a way to tap into the power of the Darkness, but Eramis shattered our Splinter and yet we hear Elsie tell us to "Look within." We're able to channel the Darkness without the Splinter. Even the Lightfall preview of Strand tells us that Darkness is related to consciousness, and we're able to channel a Darkness power that has never been discovered before. The Witness uses the powers of the Darkness, but the Darkness is an intrinsic force of reality, and does not emanate from the Witness----as much as the Witness would like us to believe that it is the avatar of the Darkness.
They are the same, dark is just a force like the light. The witness gave oryx the ability to take
@@BlackLionRampant Basically, we'll emersing ourselves and becoming ONE with the powers of both the Light and Darkness.
It's why we get Strand, the first ever, something even The Witness has never seen.
But remember, we, The Guardian, alone, seem to have this connection. I mean, we're the protagonist after all, lol.
All the rest of the online people, you just call them the New Generation of Guardians, lol.
I am 'taken' by the idea of Oryx's potential revival, as listed by the echo of savathun within the Altar's of Reflection. Maybe a video on the potential ways he could be resurrected, whether it could be via cybernetics, Hive Magic, Taken powers, or even the potential of being revived as a Lightbearer? A totally different idea: the idea of Strand potentially being related to Taking. We've heard Taking be described as a manipulation of worlds before, and Strand appears to be the power Savathun professes to be "the power to move worlds." Could they be related or even derived from the same source, The Deep? And could Strand be yet another gateway for us to interact with the dead, by pulling some essence of them into our world? Could it be another avenue by which The Taken King could return?
I just thought it was pointing out King's Fall returning which was very likely at the time. Oryx is about done, he's perma dead.
Oryx was my favorite endgame boss of all time due to the fact that he looked cool and had a great fight with him in the campaign and raid. Campaign Oryx just gives me a whole other feeling of nostalgia.
I remember playing D1 and seeing Oryx’s name on regular red bars and orange bars and thinking “Man, who is this Oryx??”. The mystery behind him and build up was done so perfectly.
Would love to hear more about the warpriest! He’s such a badass looking lad!

Hey Byf, I would love an update to Touch of Malice. I went back and recently watched your original video from 6 years ago. I found it fun you predicted it would be a shotgun instead of a scout rifle. Love all of your contentN
I love hearing the lore about the encounters. I understand them gamepla wise but to understand them lore wise would be on another level
Thank you for the work
Something I think is worth covering is the daughters of oryx, the death singers and the choir that is talked about in the deathbringer exotic rocket launcher. The idea of the deathsong still intrigues me. A shame we will never get a warlock deathsinger subclass.
I’d love to see lore about the encounters and the weapons names. I’ve always wondered who zaiolu, Yasmin etc are
they are all races that encountered the hive before (fallen, cabal and the awoken) and races that were extinct by the hive like on the rocket launcher
I said it before on your other video but I'll type it here too in the hopes that it's seen. I really think the audience would benefit from a video that covers the DEEP lore of the King's Fall raid, especially the boss fight, and then finishes off with Toland and Mara lore bits. I think you could get a solid ten minutes JUST explaining what the Guardians are actually doing in the final boss fight, because that Bomb Logic thing we do is kind of awesome and new lights may not know the full story.
Seeing lore from the weapons of the raid would be amazing. The names of them and the quotes that go with it are so mysterious and daunting.

I just generally enjoy your content so I just want you to make them all in whatever order you prefer lol
I personally would love to learn more about Oryxs victims that are described in the raid weapons like doom of chelchis for example.
The way the three Hive Gods are analogues to the three Guardian classes is interesting to me. Xivu the Titan, Oryx the Warlock, and Savathun the Hunter. A lot of people think that Savathun is their warlock equivalent, but this is pretty much entirely due to the fact that Hive Wizards wear dresses. Oryx being the god of understanding, the warlocks defining trait, is the big clue, but theres also the imagery. Oryx flies around in a robe with a sword. I was absolutely thrilled that Savathun wears a cape and has hunter-esque tight fitting armoured chitin rather than typical wizard robes. Sweet vindication.
Oryx is odd from a narrative standpoint, in that it feels like they used him too early. I joined the franchise back in Forsaken and looking over the history of Destiny, Crota and Oryx both stood out as being way higher level threats than anything else we'd fought at the time. I'd often lament the missed opportunity for fighting more grounded threats like the myriad of Fallen houses. The several billion year old Hive God who has singlehandedly brought large swathes of the universe to its knees is a little bit much for one of the first threats we face. I think its very telling that most of the rest of Destiny 1's villains aren't really even mentioned when the player characters feats are discussed. I don't even know who we fought in D1 before Oryx and Crota.
It created... unhealthy expectations for what we consider threats. A lot of Destiny players have a very distorted view of the power level of Guardians. I remember when Scourge of the Past came out, or the Forsaken seasonal content, people didn't take those threats seriously, but they forget that a lucky wretch with a knife can and often will permanently kill a Guardian. They don't realise that we lose guardians permanently every day.
Its also left Xivu Arath and even Savathun in kind of an awkward spot, in that the need for escalating threats means they're not as scary as they were. With the implication even back then being that Oryx was the greatest of the three Hive Gods, I've always found it odd that we killed him so early. I wonder if they originally planned for him to be a recurring villain and plans changed?
I would love a video explaining the lore of each encounter, what we do, who we fight, etc
I would lovema video about either the raid weapons, or the raid encounters. As a somewhat new player i have knowledge of the first game except some rants, so i would love to catch up on the lore of the origins of the races and things about them

Amazing as usual my friend. Answering your question, i want all the lore of weapons, of encounters everything. Cheers
next episode should be about the weapons including Touch of Malice and the episode after that should be a careful explanation about the encounters, like why is the deathsingers power necessary for totems, the tablet of ruin in golgoroth, etc ( what are the encounters, why do we do what we do, the significance, et). keep up the great work. Hey Byf, if possible you should see if any of the gameplay changes to the raid could affect the lore of the raid itself in any small way.
A refresher on touch of malice would be cool
Encounters are always the thing I'd like to hear more about. Weapons and such, information about them is often simple enough to find, and I do love videos about them going into more depth.
But when it comes to encounters, especially those without bosses, things often get so bogged down in "mechanics" it can be difficult to have the time to find out what we're actually DOING narratively in those moments. Do I know how to run totems? Yeah. Do I understand what is happening in the game world during that encounter? Not yet.

Hey Byf, this might be an absolutely massive request but would a ‘The Story So Far’ video be at all possible? There’s so much that’s happened in the D2 story that trying to get previous players convinced enough to play again is difficult because the story has advanced so far! Pretty sure all the people I know stopped playing after Forsaken so perhaps that could be the starting point?
He has a overview on what happened up until shadowkeep, just before beyond light, and he's said it would be possible, but he doesn't know a way how to within a reasonable amount of time.

Maybe not next, but it would be useful to talk about when the Vex invaded Oryx's Throneworld. It likely inspired the creation of the Vault of Glass, the Sol Divisive, Panoptes, and Quria obviously.
He did cover this, in season of the splicer and the season after
@@chocolateoreo8384 yeah, and he also covered the entirety of the Hive's history in various videos too. Yet here we are on a video about Oryx and his history... which has been covered already.

You know what I want??
Everything.
Everything you can talk about, I’ll watch with much pleasure devotion and dedication.
So the tithe system makes me wonder. If there has to be a final end to that system. At one point, those systems ended with Oryx, Savathun, and Shivu Arath. With Oryx dead and Savathun taking what she could to break from the Darkness to gain Light powers, does that mean that all of the base Hive are now tithing up to Shivu? If that's true, does that make her now more powerful than Oryx was back in the day?
Genuine question is it possible for the guardians to tap into the sword logic whether it be indirectly as well? If so that could be huge for the story of destiny

Me: picks up the Book of Sorrows, “Sit down awhile. I have a story for you…”
Bro I can’t believe TTK was 7 years ago, where has the time gone? 😅
