Knowing the twist ending, the piano room scene makes a lot of sense. Some living person is playing the piano, then a ghost opens the door randomly, so they stop playing and get up to investigate. Then the ghost keeps opening and closing the door, so the living person slams it shut! We’ve all seen that scene from the other side in various horrors, but its crazy to realize whats happening the other way.

The husband was aware that he was dead and that's why he was so startled by seeing his family and being able to communicate and interact with them, because that meant they were dead too, only they were not aware of it. The girl seems to be aware that something happened with the mom that day, she remembers she attacked them, but not dying, she just tells that to the father and he figures out what happened.

Seems like they’re all stick in purgatory like he’s wandering around in the fog after killed in war. I guess the last thing he wanted or unfinished business was to see his family and because they’re dead they saw him, can’t see the real people that’s alive and it’s all foggy outside their gates like they’re there too and him leaving the house wasn’t just leaving purgatory but also moving on to the like next stage like heaven or hell. At like 5:42 they spoke about purgatory and other places & things that happens like where people go depending on how good or bad they were after they die

@@MidnightSt If I remember correctly, Grace found out her husband was MIA, which is the main reason why she went off the deep end. So, essentially, Charles did die. Yes, I have the sense they will be going through this all over again, having their memories wiped of the revelation they're dead. The servants said they'd done this many times before, and they were trying different techniques of revealing the truth so maybe the mother would get it this time. So, the servants will reappear and try to gently let her know again that they all are, indeed, dead.

I just want to point out - an early hint that the caretakers are dead is that they're wearing clothes from a completely different time period to the main family. Something not many people would notice, unless they've researched historical fashion - but they are NOT wearing 1930s/1940s era clothing. I'd say it's closer to the 1890s.

"An inbetween"--I think with all the talk of purgatory in the movie, we're meant to see their haunting as a kind of purgatory. It's not heaven, not hell, just day after day after day trapped in the same basic moments, with nothing ever changing. But then, with the servants also being there, and even the husband saying he has to "go back to front", there's almost a sort of bleak implication that that's how EVERYBODY ends up when they die--that in the world of this film, there IS no heaven or hell, just purgatory.

People took pictures of the dead back in the day because that would be one of the few pictures you would have a person, and often, it would be the best picture you could get. Cameras took several seconds for the picture to take hold, so the subtle movements of a living person, even if they were staying as still as possible, would be a little blurry. A lot of the time they would even put clamps on the back of people heads and, on their limbs, to maintain a rigid posture, and smiling was never done because it was hard to smile consistently that long. A corpse would be perfectly still, and thus the resulting picture quite excellent by those standards.

The Others came after the 6th Sense. Both films are great, but I like The Others better because it's more artistic, elegant and refined IMO. It makes great use of light and dark, both as a cinematic horror effect and also as symbolism - the whole house is enveloped by darkness because of the kids "condition", essentially the whole family is "in the dark" about the state of their being. Nicole is shrouded in darkness because of her faith, refusing to believe in things outside of what she was taught.
I also like how it is entirely from the ghosts' perspective, and seems much more realistic how the dead and living are only able to connect sparsely and with difficulty. It's like two worlds living in different frequencies that can only connect when the frequency matches just right for a short period of time. It's a different approach than the 6th Sense, the 6th Sense meshes together the interaction between the dead and the living much more. Different takes on the concept.
This is my favorite Nicole performance, she was increasingly on-edge, tense and hysterical as the film went on, makes the viewer not able to relax either. Also, her character has "migraines" because she blew her head open with a gun.
I always see you guys get a lot of comments for Skeleton Key, it really is a unique horror story different than what you guys have watched so far. Pretty overlooked film. Voodoo is pretty fascinating.

One of my favorite aspects of this film (aside from the twist at the end) is the way it plays cat-and-mouse with the audience, constantly making us doubt WHO we should trust, and who we should root for. Interestingly, it's a story that doesn't actually have a "villain" in the usual sense - the villain in this story is the unknown, and the fear that the unknown creates.

    Mostly it’s a mindf**k.
It was an independent experimental film made with only 350k and a tiny genius crafted set.
It gained a reputation and quickly became a cult classic in no time causing 2 sequels with inflated budgets and a remake that came out in Japan just this year.
I’m a movie freak with a few decades on you guys, but I’ve watched a BUNCH of your reactions and really, truly think this movie is PERFECT for you.
The movie itself will wow you - but then you start thinking as budding movie creators about the production it’s even more fun.

I think the simplicity of the script, excellent cinematography/actors plus the music/sound effects makes this one of the greats. No blood/gore needed; just raw human fear. Your reactions & attempts to analyze what’s going on proves that, lol. Great reaction vid! ✌🏼😁👍🏼

I think when people die in great angst they cannot move on. And so they were stuck, but now that they know, they can start to ‘live’ and find joy and fulfilment. I think once they come to peace with their state they’d be able to move on, the mist would become light etc.
    i loved this movie :)

MY VOTE- THE GIFT. Cate Blanchet, Keanu Reeves, Katie Holmes, Hilary Swank. It’s a superb film from the early 00’s and I think you’d like it.
The Others is one of my all time favorite horror movies. Brilliant, darkly atmospheric, deftly written, unique and superb in premise, Nicole is pitch perfect, superbly crafted in tension and the art of less is more, with a haunting score and that ending; man I saw this in theater when it first came out, and you could literally hear people gasp when that ending hit, me included. Even all these many years later, it still makes me ponder the mysteries of death, the life before it…and after it. I mean, can the living actually haunt the dead? 🤔

this movie was for a whole decade the movie that made more money in cinemas in Spain...and you gotta think it came out in 2001, that's how big, important and loved it was and is here. and no wonder, it is amazing
about the book of the dead. oh yeah. it was a thing here, and yes, sometimes the only picture a family would have of that person. A famous actor here in Spain watched this movie and years later in college as an adult, did his thesis about those. he spent years looking for pictures, stories..and now published it as a book

    Random comments:
I happened to read about the Channel Islands, where this tale takes place. The Islands were occupied by the Germans during WW2. At some point, the supply ships stopped coming, and many people starved to death. Conditions were horrible. That probably caused the killing of the children.
Those were real photos of dead bodies. The 'momento mori' was a way of keeping the memory of relatives alive, and was probably the only photos ever taken of them.
There IS a disease where people cannot stand bright lights.
One theory of ghosts is that they have to relive the horrible events of their lives, over and over. Perhaps that is why she awakens with a scream, with the shadow of the memory of endless horror, about to be experienced again. Great reaction to a practically bloodless, yet totally gripping movie!
One point removed for plot holes....9/10.

This one came out 2 years after the sixth sense but I think Alejandro Amenábar, the director, made a short film of the others before the sixth sense, but I’m not quite sure. It’s definitely inspired by the turn of the screw, which is also the novel that Mike Flanagan adapted into Bly Manor. I don’t know if you count the zombie genre as horror but REC, a Spanish movie of 2007 would be an awesome movie for you to react.
