Spanish horror is SO underrated. I managed to trick my mum to come with me and watch this at the cinema while we were waiting for my dad to come back from a trip (the cinema was at the train station). The push and the mouth jumpscares got us good, but the twist and the ending emotionally destroyed us. When we went to pick up my dad we looked ghastly, although not as bad as the time we watched The Road.
Spanish horror is like the old Nursey songs. They often try to teach something or give a message, but end up being super creepy and eerie, specially because most don't have a happy ending because there is no escaping nor beating death.
I know a lot of people don't like it but I thought "Mama" was pretty creepy too.
I agree. Spanish horror/thriller is great!!
It is really becoming my favorite. It is way more disturbing then American horror and the visuals are always scary af!!!! And they let you SEE the disturbing imagery.
Have you seen The Skin I live in?
The twist of this film has haunted me since I was a teenager. Still makes me tear up.
I saw this when it came out back in school. We were taken to see it as part of a field trip to the Glasgow Film Theatre. The justification was that it was educational as it was in Spanish. Even though the school didn't even teach Spanish. I think the teachers just wanted to see it, and we had the budget for field trips that would go to waste. But it was still the best field trip we went on.
I'm very jealous. In Spanish class in high school in the late 70s we listened to pop songs on vinyl to try to pick out the lyrics (which is a terrible teaching technique). No movies... in retrospect, he was a really crappy teacher.
I used to have a student pass to the GFT. I saw over a hundred moves in just one year in there. Plus trips to the Odeon and Canon. AND I still got my degree!
I strongly recommend The Devil's Backbone, del Toro's seminal film that got him recognised outside Spain and round the world. Set during the Spanish Civil War it sets many of his creepfest storybook themes - an isolated orphanage, tales of a haunting, and an unsolved disappearance -all to historical edge. His best film, and the one his later offerings have always tried to revisit.
Yes yes, love this film.
Gracias! Love Guillermo del Toro’s work. I appreciate that you guys did not use a dubbed version. Great job as always. 🙏
Such a fantastic horror film
yes!!
When I saw Pan's Labyrinth I thought, "I liked this movie better when it was called The Devil's Backbone."
This is one of those rare movies where you get creeped out at the same time you get very emotional. I love it.
This and Sixth Sense
@@TequilaToothpick Absolutely. The Others (2001), with Nicole Kidman, is another one that gets me.
@@jose9593 I literally just watched a reaction vid for "The Others" and commented that it was similar to this one in terms of brilliant construction. Just absolutely wonderful movies, both.
haunting of hill house does the same as well
@@AyPeeElTee And Oculus, Absentia and Before I Wake by the same director
What I love about this film is how it led you down a scary road with plenty of things to make you believe it was going to be a horror, the boy with the bag on his head, the old lady and the dialogue of the son all led you, but all the time these things were being played out somehow you felt safe with the main character, she was never really afraid even when she cut her fingers she was still believably strong, she sort of held your hand, I suppose just like a Mother would (which is clever writing and acting) The scene when she was playing that game, I was shitting myself but because she just did it and wasn't terrified she made me feel safe. This was one of the most character led films I've ever watched and because you became so invested in her the ending was heart breaking for her.
I watched this when it first came out and the twist has never left me to this day.
I haven’t seen this in years. The “knock on the wall” scene was very creepy, I definitely remember that scene!
I haven't watched you guys for a while, but clicked immediately on this one.
It's such a beautiful and tragic story. I found it weirdly a relief at the end when it's revealed that none of the scary haunting parts were I'm any way malevolent. In fact any sense of fear and tension are flipped immediately to sorrow and grief. So very clever.
I think the only other movie that I can compare this to is The Others.
Thanks for this one guys 😊
I remember watching this the year it came out. Bawled my eyes out at the ending.
I love this movie. It's a really good companion piece to Pans Labyrinth and Devils Backbone. Throw in REC. from around the same time and you have a great period of Spanish Fantasy/Horror Language cinema.
I'd never given non English speaking movies much of a chance. I often felt the having to read subtitles too distracting. But something drew me to this and wow! It was INCREDIBLE. The darkness and depth in the story and then the ending.....that...... ENDING. I was emotionally drained after but in a good way. Even now this is still one of my absolute favourite movies.
It was so much fun watching you both react to it, so thank you.
el orfanato is such a sad, beautiful incredible movie, i absolutely loved the neverland, peter pan reference and how they threw it in the beginning for it to come together in the end
The psychic was played by Geraldine Chaplin. Charlie's granddaughter who appeared as her own grandmother opposite Robert Downey Jr when he played Charlie.
Geraldine is actually Charlie's Daughter. Her daughter (and therefore Charlie's granddaughter) is Oona Chaplin, who played Talisa in Game of thrones (Robb's wife)
@@AjaXxXDenia You're right, I just missplaced the 'grand' part of it!
If you want another great Spanish horror, then go for The Others by Alejandro Amenåbar. Although it is Spanish production, it is an English-language film starring Nicole Kidman and Christopher Eccleston and produced by Tom Cruise.
It has a real 'gut punch' of an ending, huge play on the emotions.
Ok Ringu AND The Orphanage are literally two of my favorite foreign horror movies. Y'all are spoiling me
We were sobbing so hard in the theater when this movie ended. It's one of my favorite films. There is one that came out before this that Guillermo Del Toro was involved in called "The Devils Backbone" which is really good also.
Fun fact: In Germany this movie was given a 12 certificate.
Your reactions to the "knock on the wall" was the same as mine when I first saw this movie when it came out.
Ahhh El Orfanato and Belén Rueda 😩♥️ I LOVE that you guys are always willing to give a chance to Spanish films. Spanish horror is amazing (REC, El Laberinto del Fauno, El Orfanato…). Great reaction as always!
Los ojos de julia too 👌👌
@@Mauriciovavel oooh true haven’t watched that one yet! Thank you!
@@Mauriciovavel Gracias, vaya. Jajajajajajajh
@@O___________0 jaja it happens, por cierto, creo que la película está en UA-cam 👍
@@Mauriciovavel jajajjh gracias! Le echaré un ojo ☺️
I'd have to rewatch the full movie again but when I first saw it, I remember thinking that the kids' ghosts actually did exist and helped her to find Simon because she found their bodies. So I thought both things were true... that Simons death was a horrible tragedy and his mother was losing her mind from grief but the ghosts also did exist as well. But I might be recalling it wrong, it's been years since I saw it.
I remember seeing this when I was in high school with a bunch of friends cramped into a tiny DVD rental viewing room. it was so tiny that we were basically sitting on each other's laps. whenever someone jumped at a scare or shivered, the rest of us would feel it like some ripple effect, ESPECIALLY at the scene at 11:23 😂
This film is criminally underseen by the horror community but really also by cinema lovers. I think you hear alot about The Others, where this film is as good as that. The end shocks. Fkn hurts. So good. I always recommend to folks when they wanna see a good horror movie.
So glad you watched this. This movie is one of my top 5. It's shot beautifully. And on the big screen it was AMAZING to watch. May I suggest you also watch the devil's backbone. It's a good watch
This is one of my all time favorites !
Even watching glimpses of it through your video made me cry all over again. It is a heartbreaking story. The end is so poetic and soooo much like Peter Pan : "it's her" (just like in Hook when the lost children reunit with a grown up Peter and recognise him)
I love that you guys give a full rundown of what each movie was like for you. Much like you’d do with friends after finishing a movie at the cinema. I don’t know why, but most “reaction” channels barely “react” and/or have such shallow commentary at the end. I love that you have depth as individuals, which makes for such rich, full formed perspectives, opinions and emotion regarding the characters and their journey 👏🏼👌🏼
It’s always nice to hear the perspectives of people who are more knowledgeable about film than I am because y’all point out things I wouldn’t have paid attention to or acknowledged otherwise (like the setup of certain shots and why they’re so good, etc.).
I especially love watching these kinds of movie reviews/discussions for psychological thriller/horror movies, because I’m fascinated by the genre but I’m too much of a chicken to sit down and watch them myself.
Keep it up, you guys are awesome!
Nice reaction!, there is another film produced by Guillermo del Toro with the same actress Belen rueda, its "Julia's Eyes" or "Los ojos de julia" in spanish, you should react to that one too, its really good.
I have never even heard of this movie so thank you for opening us up to a wider world of movies!
We love comments like these, spreading the joy of cinema 😊
@@CinemaRules well you get comments like these when you do amazing work like you’re all doing! If only school learning was this fun I might not have given up with college 😂😂😂
I do agree with you gentlemen. Fantastic film, thank you for picking this one! 👍
such a good film and great ending.. I'm not big on ghost films but love this one!
I remember being sick to my stomach when I saw this movie. Still has the same effect now. So brutal. Also, if you're looking for any other Spanish horror recommendations, The House at the End of Time is a really great Venezuelan film.
I'd completely forgotten that Geraldine Chaplin was in this. She is the daughter of the legendary Charlie Chaplin.
The revenge on the children reminded me of the Japanese film The Cinderella Addiction (2021). It's a thriller disguised as a romance. I came to it blind because i lost a bet and was forced do a marathon of asian romcoms. my friends and i thought it was going to be a romance and it seemed to start as that but somewhere along the way it started to kind of become like a thriller which reminded me of The Good Son (1993) and it just got darker and darker. It's not as good as this film but I still appreciate how new the storytelling felt. It seemed all over the place but I still liked that it didn't completely turn out to be a cheesy asian romcom after all.
Saw this in the theater when it was released. I remember knock on the wall being so tense, I tightened my muscles and held my breathe a little more each time she started to turn around. And you're right about the twist, finding out she accidently locked Simone in that basement room and the thud she heard was his fall; he'd been right there the whole time.
You get tons of recommendations and requests I'm sure but someday if you haven't seen it and it fits in your schedule try Shutter, 2004 from Thailand
I watched this for the first time myself a year or 2 back. Can't believe how well it held up
I need to watch this movie again since I haven't seen it in years.
So glad to find reactions to this awesome movie!
I watched this 15 years ago and the little kid's death always made me sad :( It's a great movie.
Another enjoyable reaction from you guys.I recommend "The Babadook" if you guys haven't seen it. It is also about grief. Also "Mama" would be a good choice. (Another Del Toro-produced film).
So glad yall finally watched this one, an underrated gem, also check out "Julia's Eyes" if you haven't already
I know you want foreign films not in English but still on fantastic film is “The Hallow” from Ireland. It’s based on old Irish folklore. It’s good to see a film that uses practical effects and practical Costuming of the Hallow.
The trailer alone had me so fu**king excited for this! .. when the trailer voice goes... "..and the games children play... ... ..when they're alone in the dark.." ... ..*chills.
21:20, putting his face under his own shirt. Lol!!
I recommended this movie to you guys back when you watched The Wailing. Glad you guys finally got around to this movie.
Could've sworn my Grandma had this movie and Pam's Labyrinth
This is an amazing film and one of the only horror films ive bawled my eyes out crying as much as been scared shitless
Them (2006).... Original title: Ils
I remember watching this in my friends dorm on Halloween night in Salem Massachusetts at like 3am as she was passed out. I remember just having my mind absolutely BLOWN
Yes guys. Thankyou for showing this! I’ve been harking about this film to everyone. I think to you two as well. 👍🏽
00:01, your faces at the beginning!
Lol!! This is gonna be fun!
Brilliant reaction, you guys work so well together your videos always entertain.
You guys should make a Guillermo del Toro playlist and just go through his movies. Just all his stuff is so great. Nightmare alley is another one you guys could react too. Im interested to see his upcoming pinocchio movie
Would love to see you review the Stepfather (1980s) Children of the Corn, or Carrie (1976)
Love your channel!
Tom you are so cute. 😁
Agree Tom is Bf material x❤
One of my top 10 horror films. Masterpiece.
I saw this in theaters. Imagine what that was like during the red light green light scene!
One of the best twists in horror/ thriller history.
That’s correct. Guillermo del Toro has made or collaborated in several films where the child dies. If anyone cares, I’d recommend a bonkers French movie titled High Tension
I think the old lady just wanted to remove the evidence.
The medium is Charlie Chaplin's daughter
The movie belongs to the DIRECTOR not the producer. J.M. Bayona es the Director. Just because some one invest as Producer in a movie does not take it away from the maker of the movie..... the Director makes the movie.
You guys already seen this movie. I would recommend you guys watching A Monster Calls. It's a movie who director The Orphanage and The Impossible
Omg yes! That movie is just......I have no words for it. Have you read the book? It's an incredibly deep read for something that appears to be a an easy quick story. I've never been as numb after reading a book as I was with that one.
@@rachelmckitterick Unfortunately no. I haven't readt the book yet and i just discover the author of this book and obssessed with the art book covers and the story. Clearly i haven't read many all of them from his book, but some day i will buy his books and read his books.
Awesome 👌!! Love Cinema Rules.
Thanks fellas, Cinema Rules is my favorite channel.
Guys , hello. I recommend you watch EDEN LAKE movie. It's one of the most underrated gem ever. Twist ending even darker when Orphanage.
You should watch JA Bayona's other film, "A Monster Calls". It's not horror but it has similar themes of coming to terms with loss and grief.
Ive subscribed long time ago 😎
Haven't seen this one in years. Really great film
Such an amazingly tragic story.
Its been so long since I've seen this. Enjoyed your reaction. I'd prob give it a 7 to 7.6
This film is incredible, I highly suggest Julia's Eyes
Right on time. That Jurassic World Dominion with Shaun was great and hilarious but its always nice to see you both react.
Now they should watch _The Changeling_ (1980).
Yeah … you need to watch Del Toros The devils Backbone!! Soooo good
Haven't seen this since it's come out. Another good one from Del Toro. You should watch The Devils Backbone!
17:29 this has always been my favorite scene! I remember watching this movie when I was 7 (around the time it came out) with my cousins and we would play this game. “Um, dois, três - bate na parede!”. Chills, every time I watch it. Never forget this movie, one of my favorites. And that plot twist is heartbreaking 💔
I'd recommend watching The Changeling, when you get a chance
I hope you guys do The Changeling (1980) this year.
You should watch Don't look now, another great horror movie about grief.
To be honest I think Del Toro "heavily borrowed" his idea for 'Shape of Water' from a little known Spanish horror author who wrote 'Cold Skin', which was made into movie.
I highly recommend it. Creepy and has a much more cohesive messaging that's not as hamfisted.
el senor Barriga! el Botija!! 12:25
i’d like to request “alice sweet alice (1976)”
Wait so he was missing but they didn't check the whole house🤦♂️
Haha! it was a secret room, if they knew it was there, it wouldn’t be called a secret room now would it?
Weirdly i tought this was another orphanage movie and now i cant remember the name of the other movie.
Not an american movie: girl goes to work in orphanage and there are ghost kids. That what i remember and the final twist. If anyone knows 😅😅😅
I'd like to recommend the movie The Skeleton Key from 2005. It would make a very good film to watch during Halloween that stars Kate Hudson.
8.6/10 very good movie, creepy
i would love to see yall's reaction to del toro's "the devil's backbone" 2001.
For a good foreign film I recommend Incantation, a Taiwanese one on Netflix that no one talked about
BTW, this movie reminded me a lot to Mike Flanagan’s style
Love you guys
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.
Can't wait to see your reaction and review to:
CANDYMAN
RINGU.
Good good good! Yes! Bring it on! 😎😎😎😍😈
if you want to check out other foreign movies, try Hypersomnia (2016, Argentina)
Thanks, Tom! Thanks, Shaun! 😨 #CinemaRules #JABayona #TheOrphanage2007 I love that silent movie icon Charlie Chaplin's daughter Geraldine has a small-but-notable role in this... she portrayed 'Aurora'.
Once you know this, you can't unsee the family resemblance can you? 🙂
She certainly pops out at me... and she often chooses unusual parts. I love that about her.
23:14, a huge sigh of relief at the end.
Looks like others have beat me to recommending The Devil's Backbone. I'll just add another vote for it.
damnit i promised myself never to watch this movie again!! i guess this is the exception :| The first one on my DO NOT watch list is 'mama' from 2013.....bricks was shat.
By the way, you should watch Bayona's "A Monster Calls" if you haven't seen it. Equally heartbreaking.
Tomas is the Spanish version of Jason Vorhees
Omg one of my favorite movies
Uno dos tres... toca la pared!
