The actor who played father merrin looked about 75 but only was in his 40s when this came out. The makeup they put on him was incredible
He always looked old, probably even as newborn.

34:09 I think that small bit at the end where Regan kisses the priest is suggesting that although Regan doesn't remember anything from being possessed, she subconsciously knows a priest saved her life; she just saw the priest, and subconsciously assumed it was him.

I didn't know there was a series, just the two sequels and two prequel movies. Haven't seen any of them, but I've heard Exorcist III is great.
@@Andrew_Thannen yup the series is really really good. The first season is a continuation of the movie in a way and the second season is a different story. Both seasons are fun to watch.
The 3rd exorcist was decent, but not as good as the 1st.
Can you believe people FAINTED in theatres because of the hospital scene? Also, the actress that plays Regan suffered back injuries from the scene where she is whipping back and forth because of the harness she was connected to. the screams are very real. Reading and listening to what happened behind the scenes is just as frightening as the film itself.
I mean it was a different time and a lot more people were catholic, so this movie was not only scary but something that didn’t seem too far from reality
Fun fact the guy administering the procedure was a real life tech who was commended for his bed side manner. ... And then he went on to be a convicted serial killer.

actually it was the actresds ( Ellen Burstyn) that plays Chris, the mom, that was seriously injured not Regan.

@@whitenoisereacts Linda Blair was actually nominated for Best Supporting Actress for this movie. She did a couple of other things but nothing special after this. Ironically the other thing she is known for is her and Leslie Nielson did a parody of this movie called "Re-Possessed", she plays a grown up Reagan who gets possessed again, but that is one of those silly/stupid parody movies. Good for a few laughs.
She has a short cameo in Scream as a reporter lol.

She was in two movies that most likely could not be made today due to the subject matter, one was Born Innocent and the other was Sweet Hostage. She’s been in other movies as well and many TV shows.

At the end of the episode, Dean turns to his brother Sam and asks "Did she looked familiar to you? All of a sudden I want a bowl of pea soup."
Well, I think that this is the very first movie to showcase a Ouija board. This film is the scariest movie of all time because it was ahead of its time, and it's a classic.
Yes, before this it was regarded as a silly, fun board game for kids! Weird but true.

SPOILER ALERT. Guys I enjoyed your video. The ending is quite simple. Infuriated by the death of old father Merrin and angry over what's happening to the girl Father Karras begs the demon to leave the girl and TAKE HIM. The demon instantly jumps into him and -wstch carefully there's a POV shot of his hands GOING for her throat. The demon is going to strangle her using the priest's body/hands. Father Karras screams NO and throws himself out the window, heroically sacrificing himself to save the girl. She later remembered nothing of the entire affair on the conscious level. But subconsciously she responded to seeing the priest's collar at the end.
Exactly. It's the reason Regan kisses the priest's cheek before getting into the car with her mom.
Yeah, but as a Catholic it seemed like an odd move. Devil or no, by killing himself he damns himself to hell, so it just seemed like the demon kinda won

@@whitenoisereacts Not really, the sin of suicide was most likely cancelled because the priest gave him the last rites. The line 'do you ask for forgiveness for all your sins' and Karras gestured for 'yes' so it would've been absolved. And I think if God does exist, I think he'll let this go, seeing as the priest willing sacrificed his life to save another innocent soul.

"This movie is very well directed for how old it is." So many movies nowadays rely on special effects and technology, whereas older films and their directors used good screenplays, blocking, and talent to appeal to the public. Fantastic old directors like Hitchcock, Kurosawa, and Wyler (to name a few), were much more adept than many of the most popular directors currently working.

This film isn't that old in the big scheme of FILM HISTORY. There are hundreds of truly old films that would blow your mind in terms of innovation. Watch "Metropolis" to see what I mean.
Exactly. Any contemporary filmmakers of mastery learned from the great directors of the past. Millennials and Z's have been misled to think that film storytelling developed only in their lifetime, when there's a century of masterful cinema in the rearview mirror.
For a movie set in the 70's this does a strikingly large amount of "reasonable and scientific" thinking for what the subject matter is. That's what makes it so effective. This was during a time and just before another wave of "satanic panic" in the US. This movie hit all the logical notes of appealing to experts, science, medicine, that I think inadvertently has made it age so well because this movie, in a society of today and in the modern era of 2000's plus, is exactly what hits the "what-if" so well.
I'm not a religious person or believe in the paranormal at all. But that's what is so great about this movie and what it has done so well to age in this modern time. It hits all the notes a rational and logical person would, even today, in terms of dealing with this sort of situation. You don't have to believe in God or religion or even spirituality to acknowledge that this movie magnificently has aged into being a horrifying contemporary horror movie.
"The attack is psychological, Damien, and powerful..." that line sums up this movie. It's not a typical horror movie, it's a very disturbing psychological thriller showcasing the dichotomy of an innocent little girl possesed by a deranged and sadistic demon. The stories of the two priests and Regan's mom needed to be told before they could come together to save her, but Regan was mostly bait, that demonic force actually wanted a rematch with Merrin, and also to take the priest who fell from grace. In the end Damien redeemed himself by making sure the demon didn't win this particular battle, making the ultimate sacrifice. This movie is one of my favorites EVER, because it can still disturb even desensitized audiences decades later.
There's a scene with Regan where she's thrashing around on the bed and screaming, "Make it stop". Linda (the actress) actually fractured her back because there was a malfunction with the machine (from my memory). There is a behind the scenes snippet of her at this exact moment and you can see her breaking out into tears as people rush toward her. Poor girl...

Exorcist wasn't just a horror flick. It was a serious Hollywood picture, winning 2 Oscars and nominated for but not winning 8 more Oscars.
the thing I like about the priest in this case, is that he has all this backstory. It's not like in many other movies, where there's suddenly an entirely new person coming into play. it's much more impactful this way.
The priest's backstory is shown because the demon is going to use it against him.
Fun fact: Max von Sydow, who plays Father Merrin, was only in his early 40s (!) when they made this movie. The makeup artist did an absolutely outstanding job.
I'm usually the one to post this! :D Legendary makeup artist Dick Smith! Literally invented the old age technique used for this movie and was so gracious with sharing his techniques. It is this movie and Amadeus which are both argued to have the best old age makeup ever put to film and both were done by Dick Smith.
Seriously. Von Sydow spent the remaining decades of his life aging back into the role. That's some makeup artistry for ya.
Max Von Sydow is a legend. He’s been in so many films, both great and not so great. He is in three films I love for different reasons. The Exorcist, one of the greatest films ever made. Strange Brew a crazy comedy inspired by SCTV’s Bob & Doug McKenzie and Flash Gordon.
Of course I know it was all make up, but I still like to joke about that he played an 80 year old priest here, and 20 years later, he looked 30 years younger, and played the devil in Needful Things. It weirds people out, if they don't know about the make up.
Dick Smith was a pioneer and a legend. his makeup techniques paved the way for so many things having to do with cinema makeup. RIP.
This was what they call a "slow burn". But I kind of liked how they weren't going to sacrifice realism just to keep it moving. It was done incredibly well. You're never bored. And in spite of everything, the characters had to exhaust all scientific possibilities before being able to accept that demonic forces existed because, you know, the next stop is madness. It just added to the horror imo. This one never gets old for me. Glad you guys enjoyed it.
Yes, I just left a comment about how sometimes people feel let down because of the slow pacing. While writing it I realized this is an early example of a slow burn. I love it too and I appreciate how it builds up but I know some people are impatient and used to horror movies with jump scares/faster pacing. To me, the realistic aspect of it makes it feel terrifying whereas most horror movies try too hard.
It's excellent drama and excellent dialogue. There are two storylines running at the same time and it shows how it all mixes at the end.

Nearly 50 years later and not only is it STILL one of the scariest films ever made, it's just an impeccably well made film in every aspect.
The clue is the title. It's about Fr. Merrin's rematch with the demon he previously exorcised. Once he was dead the demon no longer needed Regan. But in the end it loses because it's destroyed by Fr. Karras regaining the faith he had lost. Character, character, character! Thank you for watching the original cut!

The demon has two motivations. One is a rematch with Merrin since he exorcised the demon in Africa in the past. The other is going after Karras because a priest losing his faith is an irresistable target for a demon.
Clearly, the title refers to Karras, not Merrin.

I think it's crazy how Priests are the last resort for this type of stuff and they're probably just as terrified as we are seeing their entire faith flash before their eyes

When she saw the Priest's collar at the end, something inside her knew a Priest saved her life even if she couldn't consciously remember it. She felt the impulse to kiss him on the cheek as a thank you.
My parents went to see this movie when they were dating and my mother always told me that the movie theater was full and after the vomiting scene there were only half a dozen people (including them) LOL

Unbelievable how incredibly well this film was crafted, especially considering it was filmed nearly a half century ago.
Alien, The Shining and The Thing are also horror movies that are recommended If you haven't seen them yet.

The Demon pazuzu wanted revenge on Merrin for casting him out years before in Africa and wanted Regan to die during the exorcism. Merrin died instead and enraged the demon because he lost. Or that's how I remembered the book
The priests would’ve sent you back to a psychiatrist and doctors. Getting an exorcism granted is INSANELY rare.

The Church will exhaust all other possibilities-psychiatric and otherwise-before they perform an exorcism. I am a Catholic and a firm believer in the demonic and the efficacy of exorcism, which is why I will not allow a ouija board or any other occultic medium into my house. Better safe than sorry, IMO.
Depends on where you live in the world and also which religion. Some places, including the part of the world this movie makes it's intro see more common exorcisms. Demons be causing a nuisance all over the place they're bang out of order.
I love the fact that the special effects had to be done old school style. They still hold up today.
_Hereditary_ comes up the _Exorcist_ in terms of creepiness.... The main strength of the movie is in it's unrelenting low level creepiness. It's a shame that the Big Scenes get all the attention because this film is a master class in tension and suspense.
I remember when this came out in early 2000’s on video after being banned for 25 years people were thinking what the fuss was about, when they watched it they thought it was hilarious. But the next recent over 18’s have taken it much more serious and appreciate it for what it is a well crafted documentaryesque style horror film that looked like this could happen.

He was referring to the kids running around in costumes... It's Halloween.
Halloween was in 1978, so there was no way that it copied the music from Halloween.

If you are curious, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose is another good thriller.
First time viewer...I saw this when it was originally released in theaters in ‘73. It was the first of its kind; no movie had ever been made about demon possession. I slept with lights on for 6 months. If not mistaken, I believe it is still considered the #1 horror flick of all time. Awesome special effects with no CGI around! Good job 👍
I saw it in '75 on the big screen when I was 15, with my bff. My parents dropped us off at the theatre, knowing nothing about the movie. I tried to explain it to them afterwards, going home & they didn't believe it could be that bad. I don't think they ever saw this movie (they both died of cancer), which is definitely in with Cultural Landmarks.
Great reaction to this movie guys. A lot of people were truly shocked by this masterpiece because it brought the thought of possession and evil in the open cause no one could believe that something like this could ever happen in modern times much less imagining stuff like this in the dark ages. This one crept up on you cause the infestation from the evil spirit happened slowly turning an otherwise innocent girl into a possessed pawn of the devil to not only destroy her but the priests that were sent to cast it out. The movies of today that deal with this genre just can't seem to get it right and ultimately goof it up by over the top CGI and ridiculous plots that are so dumb and unbelievable. The Exorcist was landmark for this type of horror movie and nothing has come close to it since, not even the Conjuring series of movies. The Exorcist III is the closest but the director's cut and not the one that was released in theaters. Keep up the great reactions!

He didn't just play a radiology tech, HE WAS a radiology tech guy. The movie just used the people who really worked at the hospital.

I think at the point where the mother asks Karras if Regan was going to die and he said "no," he had it in his head that he was going to sacrifice himself. Seeing Merrin dead just pushed him over the edge.
The Exorcist, Rosemary’s Baby and The Shining share my top spot for the best horror of all time.
Another of my favorites from the 70s is The Mephisto Waltz.
I would add The Omen (1976) to the horror list.

A very well edited reaction, guys. Your choice of shots from the movie was very interesting, and your responses to them were intelligent, and often surprising.
Your conclusion that The Exorcist is more disturbing than scary is probably correct (depending how you define those words). It’s a film that asks a lot of its audience, and which doesn’t supply all the answers. Watch it 100 times and you will still see something new.
The novel is worth your time and there is an audio version on UA-cam read by the author that is a little more revealing and also very disturbing!.

You guys have had probably the best reaction I’ve seen watching this movie 😁. It’s one of my all time favorite films, and I watched it just a few years after it was released. I couldn’t sleep. But seeing you young guys agree that it was amazing for 1973 and your faces was priceless. 👍🏼
The cool thing about the demon telling Father Karras "Can you help an old alter boy, Father?"...I believe it was the demon's way of letting Karras know he knows about him and has probably been following him for a while. The possession wasn't necessarily about Regan but she was used a vessel to attack Karras and get Merrin involved.
In addition, I believe the demo acted like the "holy water" burned it hoping that Father Karras would just walk the other way. The demo was very smart.
You guys are 2 of the smarter reviewers out there. You also have depth and insight. I enjoyed your review of this movie. It still scares the hell out of me and I watch it a few times a year for decades now.
Karass didn't have the faith Merrin did and you were right. It was very dangerous for him to be in the room alone with Regan.
Whether "demons" are real or not, I have no idea.
BUT before the movie, I was SURE they weren't real. Now I just have no idea.
A movie is Great when it makes you believe something you didn't before or doubt something you did believe before.

WB made a sequel Exorcist 2 : The Heretic , but the real sequel is Exorcist 3. It's based on the author's sequel called Legion and the author Directed it. George c Scott plays the detective from the first movie. In this one The detective is investigating several murders that he discovers are connected to the events in The Exorcist.
'Exorcist 3' was taken away from the director and severely altered by the studio, with a random third act exorcism clumsily added to tick a box that Blatty had no intention of ticking. I've no idea how the movie was originally to end, apparently Shout Factory tried to assemble something resembling Blatty's cut for Blu-Ray but I haven't seen it. There's some great stuff in the movie still, though - and George C. Scott is great, as usual - but it becomes something else when the random exorcist character pops up. .
The two prequel films are fascinating examples of the same studio hiring two different directors to film the same script and not liking either version. First director was Paul Schrader who was a bit confused that they asked him to make it, franchise horror NOT being his thing at all, but went ahead and made his more contemplative version of an 'Exorcist' prequel which the studio hated. Then Renny Harlin re-shot just about the whole thing and added all kinds of unintentionally amusing boo-moments to thuddingly harken back to the first movie (and the second movie, sort of...) like any horror franchise would be expected to do which is kind of annoying since the first movie avoided all that kind of thing so carefully - mainly by being made years before all those tropes were developed, but still.
For a seriously fun time, have a drink or two and try a movie called 'The Rite' with Anthony Hopkins as an exorcist. An effort is made to put lots of stuff about real exorcisms in it and the character Hopkins played was based on a real guy, but by the end it's just silly fun. It's Anthony fucking Hopkins playing an exorcist, what more do you need??

exorcist remains one of the BEST horror films ever made. And, IMO, is definitely better than modern day horror.
One of my top 5 movies and the most scariest I watched. Based on a true story this movie is rock solid for 1973.
One of the top three horror films ever made. It’s a psychological attack on especially the most religious audience of the time. It mirrors the attack used by demons, mostly psychological and quite disturbing. The movie achieved its goal brilliantly.
Regan was never the object of the demon. The demon says “what an excellent day for an exorcism”. Karass says “you want an exorcism”, the demon says “intensely. It will bring us closer together “ Karass says you and Regan, and the demon says “no. You and us” and the demon won in the end. They got Karass.
I doubt the demon would see the mortal death of the priests to be victory. It was a battle of power, the demon’s power against the power of the priests’ faith. The death of Father Merrin meant that the game (as the demon saw it ) had to end. Fr Karras’s self-sacrifice means he is a martyr, hardly a victory for the forces of evil.
You guys should react to "Orphan" 2009. One of the best horror films I've ever seen without all the shock and gore of the current films. It's a great movie.
Its fun watching millennials make comments about older movies and how surprised they get when they see how edgy it is. The 70's were full great movies and good cinema is always edgy. Love seeing your reaction to this. Now go check out the directors other great movies like The French Connection, The Sorcerer and the 80's masterpiece To live and Die in LA.

I'm always amazed to see you "reaction guys" watching these movies in a room filled with bright light.
I know it's necessary for the video setup.
But then , movies like this one were made to be enjoyed in a totally darkened room, with no-one talking. In a theatre.

If you like the actor Jason Miller who played the younger priest, you should react to another of his films from the 70's, "The Marathon Man" which also stars Dustin Hoffman and Sir Laurence Olivier. You will love it - it's incredibly suspenseful.
Hell yes, we'd like to see you do more serious films like this. Your reactions are excellent, you ask all the right questions and get the underlying motivations... when the movie bothers to give you something worth discussing. At minimum, please take on the other horror/suspense greats, like "The Shining", "The Thing" and "Alien"/"Aliens". Superior reaction here, guys.

Before I found out, I said the sound in this film is incredible! It won best Oscar for sound!
I don't know if anyone mentioned this but the actress who played the little girl did such a convincing job that people were actually scared of her in real life. She's done interviews about it.

Imagine almost 50 years ago, it was madness. Check out some news clips on UA-cam from back then, stuff like this just wasn't made. Crazy it still has a powerful impact so many years later
It really is crazy to think about but I completely believe people reacted that way. Sometimes it's difficult to put yourself in that mindset if you weren't there but I imagine it was truly shocking.
It was really no joke. I was born in 73 and me and my friends had a slumber party in 82 or 83 and we had to rent a vcr and the movie, it may have been in BetaMax, instead of VHS at the time, I don't remember. I can tell you that a room full of "tough" 10 to 12 year old boys didn't sleep a fkn wink after watching this movie. Still remains a masterpiece.
in those last seconds, after the demon entered father karas, he started moving toward reagan, like he was going to kill her (you can see it in face) but the strength of damien's faith helped him fight back (his face becomes normal again), to avoid harming her. you could see the face of father merrin in the window for a brief moment. damien sacrificed his life, took save reagan, by throwing himself out the window.

This movie was highly controversial when it came out….for several reasons…one being what the actress Linda Blair was made to do in the movie being only 12 years old…and then bc of just how scary the movie is….people were freaking out in the movie theaters everywhere……F’n movie still freaks me out so many years later.
Linda Blair man omg amazing acting from her and everyone else in this movie. They say people back in the 70's fainted in the cinema watching this, others ran out or actually puked all over the place.
I watched the movie on the big screen when it came out. I had trouble sleeping for about a week (I was 18). I don't recall seeing anyone leave the theater during the film when I saw it, but I have seen the reports that some people were walking out, throwing up, etc.
I didn't, and don't now, watch a lot of movies in theaters on first release to avoid crowds. That said, I did view a movie about 3 years after Exorcist where I saw people walking out near the end because of a violent scene that most of us had never witnessed before. In fact, I wasn't sure I could make it to the end and literally held on to my seat. The film was Taxi Driver starring Robert DeNiro and Jody Foster. So I actually had a harder time sitting through Taxi Driver than Exorcist, probably because the violence was so realistic in Taxi Driver and so foreign to us in the day.
Such a masterpiece. The effects for 1973 are amazing and the acting is just superb! Also, the most disturbing scene is in DAYLIGHT and it's shocking. Many movies could learn building suspense and horror from The Exorcist.

I saw this movie opening week at the Ziegfeld theater in Manhattan. Back in those days exorcism was not well known. People who were taught about it in school (usually Catholic schools) were told it was an old superstitious rite which has since disappeared. Even the Catholic church denied performing them. So what now seems obvious to you and me would never have occurred to a woman of no faith back then. Not only was the director slowly introducing exorcism to the mother but to most of the audience as well.
Back then moves took their time to develop the characters which makes you much more vested in their outcome. If the mom called the priest within the first 15 - 20 minutes of the movie would you care as much about everyone in the cast?
While there have been a number of good horror movies since then, like the Conjuring, I still consider this my favorite one.

"She just hasn't watched enough horror movies" - yes! This was the first movie to use a lot of the tropes we recognize today (like the Ouija board, scary noises in the attic...). Scared the hell (pardon the pun) out of everyone!
This film is probably one of the most cursed films in horror film history. Many things occurred during filming. The main actress Linda Blaire and the actress who played her mom had back injuries during filming. And during filming a fire broke upon the set and burnt down the set except for the bedroom, which was odd to the production crew. And the most bone chilling incident was the actor who played the nurse in the film murdered a reporter. He admitted to his crime, but couldn't come up with a motive to why he committed the crime. This film isn't one of the most terrifying films to exist, but is a highly cursed movie.
The shot where Caras is wrestling with the demon inside, has him regaining control for just a second and In that split second he sacrifces himself (Catholics believe suicide is a sin) to save Regan and banish the demon all at once. Very touching!

really were no movies quite like this. When it came out most people couldn't handle it they left the theater crying, it amazes me to this day that it was even allowed to to be shown in 1973. It completely traumatized a friend of mine in high school
It was Father Karras's redemption. He sacrificed himself for someone he never met. He never met Regan, he only had contact with the demon, Pazuzu.
Regan kissed the priest because when Father Karras exorcised the demon from her, the white collar was the first thing she saw. She knew a priest saved her.
Sadly that is not how redemption works in Christianity. The Bible is very clear on this that Christ died for our sins and redemption is not by works or deeds but faith alone in the death, burial and Resurrection of Christ (1 Cor 15:1-4). That is what is written in the NT and that is what the early Christians taught and believed including the Apostles. That got all mixed up though in the middle ages with the Roman Catholic church which became badly corrupted and created a bunch of unbiblical doctrines on salvation.

I saw the film in 1973 on the big screen; There were people in the cinema actually fainting and some running outside before the end. I also read the book and while I was reading it, I was so frightened that I had to read it outside, it sent shivers down my spine; It has to be the most frightening film ever made.
There's a TV series The Exorcist released in 2016 by FOX. You will learn more about what happened to the family and the demon. The show is super underrated. Sadly it was wasn't renewed after Season 2 and the franchise ended on a cliffhanger. I think you guys will enjoy it

At the end - Fr. Damien Karras, did confess by squeezing of the hand. After plunging down a flight of concrete steps, I think it would be kinda hard to sit up and talk... And, Fr. Marrin was summoned/drawn there by the demon... Fun Fact: if you watched the season 6 of Game of Thrones, Max Von Sydow was the 3 eyed raven...

This movie has absolutely haunted me my entire 33 years of life. It's funny that you watched this right after Hereditary because I think that movie is the only one that comes EVEN CLOSE to The Exorcist.

I couldn't help but chuckle when you kept wondering why the mother wasn't calling a priest in the beginning. As someone who was around back then, you've got to understand, until this book and movie came out no one ever heard of the word exorcism. It wasn't a thing. It's one of the reason this story hit so hard. This was a deep dark secret within the Catholic church. No one even knew such a thing existed as exorcism and exorcists. It is what made the movie all the more shocking. A Brand new terrifying concept to most of the population.
For a movie filmed in 1972, came out in 73. I think it holds up real well. Realistic well done film.

The loud musical call right at the beginning of the movie the is 'azaan' which is the muslim call to prayer. It was used to emphasize the culture of the location. As one can later tell from the ladies wearing black burkha and skullcaps the area seems to be predominantly muslim populated.

The demon wanted the priest from the start, so thats why he left Ragan so quickly. The demon Pazuzu actually possessed his body and I think he comes back in Exorcist 3
This was loosely based on an actual event yes, however it was a young boy and not a girl as depicted in the movie. The series is also quite cool and the movie is canon
It's not based on one actual event. The author of the novel did do research on theological and historical accounts of exorsism and such so you could say it was inspired by events if you'd like and believe the accounts to be trustworthy.

I thought I knew a bit about this topic and the accounts that inspired the story but this case might have slipped my mind or wasn't known that well at the time. Thanks for the information. I am a skeptic and not religious. Rationally I don't believe supernational claims but there is something about this story and the concept of possession I can't help but be fascinated by.

Merrin is so beast, almost to the point of being holy. The demon realized it and switched all its attacks to Karras. You can tell the demon and Merrin knew each other when Merrin entered the house and you hear it yell.. MErrrrRiiiinnnn!
