This song was a Tribute to Rev. Martin Luther King after his assassination. Elvis started his singing and musical journey as a Gospel singer. As a young boy, he amazed the people at his church with his voice. He grew up Very Poor. His church was a mixed-race church which was unusual back in his time as a child.

I'm 70 now n have watched Elvis since1956. I got to the 1973 Aloha concert that was broadcasted around the world and seen by 1.5 Billion people n I sat 3rd row center n couldn't take my eyes off of him. I never met Elvis but became friends with Charlie Hodge his confidant and best friend for years after Elvis died. This song was written after Martin Luther King was assassinated. He went back stage n Charlie said he cried Was very emotional

This was Elvis's Tribute Song in 1968 to Honor MLK after his Murder in Memphis TN, where Elvis lived. It was based on MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech and written for Elvis to sing. He insisted on singing it to close his 68 Comback Special against his Manager Colonel Parker's wishes, he wanted him to sing a Christmas Song to close the Show. RFK was also honored as he was Murdered shortly before 68 Comeback Special aired. These were Troubled Times in America, with the Vietnam War and Civil Rights Movement and Tentions were high. At that time singing this song would have been considered risky for his career but he didn't care he sang it anyway. RIP Elvis

A friend of Elvis wrote this song for him and it was about the turbulence of the 1960s in general but also the songwriter knew that Elvis was close with Martin Luther King and m.l.k. had just been shot and Bobby Kennedy have been shot and of course President Kennedy before that. And the Vietnam War. And so his really controlling manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was trying to insist that Elvis did this television special and this was the final song, the finale. He wanted him to do a Christmas song but because of everything going on, Elvis insisted on doing this song. He wore a white suit to represent purity for the future and hope that people can just get along and then he wore the red tie to indicate all the blood being shed all over during that decade. And if you notice at the end of it, he's absolutely exhausted. He apparently went backstage afterwards and curled up into a ball and cried for hours. So he means every word he's singing there.
Such a brave way to end his do-or-die comeback special. Elvis himself received many death threats and had an almost messianic following.
This is the kinda song when your finished you just drop the MIC and walk off the stage...NUFF SAID!

I was 12 years old when this came on the TV, and I was in awe of him, his looks, his voice and his dancing, never will an entertainer match what he had, complete sex machine, charisma oozing, and a great sense of humour. I watched all of his movies and to this day, no one sings like him, he could sing anything from gospel, to rock n roll, to Jazz. Loved him then and still now.
