Elvis first sang this song at the end of a 1968 Christmas Special broadcast nationally. His manger wanted a happy Christmas carol but Elvis wanted to honor the memories of Martin Luther King, Jr and Robert Kennedy, both of whom were killed earlier that year. @@brandonnshante Elvis was a huge fan of Dr. King. The late Myrna Smith who was in the group The Sweet Inspirations tells a story on the documentary He Touched Me: The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley that when Elvis went to Texas Elvis was told “You can leave the black girls at home. You don’t have to bring the.” Elvis said he wouldn’t perform if he didn’t’ have his girls with him. He demanded that they were given the full treatment. Myrna Smith said that was Elvis’ statement. “You don’t like it, deal with it or I’m not going to be there.” Truthfully I wish I lived in a world where everybody was colour blind because skin colour and race do not define us.

The latest biopic on him was a blockbuster. He’s the only artist in 4 different music hall of fames. I think the new generation of reactors are definitely securing his already legendary legacy. So I just have to slightly disagree with your assessment of Elvis. I think we can both agree that his voice is insanely great and that he gave every part of himself with each performance. Wow! Well if there was ever the spark that took hold it was Elvis. He came from NOTHING, and in return gave EVERYTHING. Not only considered the King of Rock and Roll (some will argue), (not many) he had a full gospel list, rock, drippy love songs, show tunes and everything in between. IDK how much of him you have listened to but you can never go wrong with an Elvis reaction. You may be interested in his life a little more to. If so there is a great video out there on his relationship with the A.M. community and how he was freely giving soul and helped THOUSANDS of people in need. He also served in the U.S. Army and wanted no special treatment (even though he got a little), he was just a cool dude all around!!

I can only imagine how great of a president Bobby Kennedy would have been and how much higher Dr King would have risen. This was Elvis’s tribute and it’s a powerful truth. There’s going to be people that say Elvis was racist. It’s completely untrue. He would get boycotted and there were many attempts to “cancel” him because he would go into Black communities because that’s where he was most comfortable. That was a no no during segregation. Please don’t listen to the hate about Elvis. There’s just too much evidence to the contrary.

Everything in this performance has a purpose. The song itself was written by Earl Brown, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech I Have a Dream. The song was written with Elvis in mind & it’s a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown was aware of Elvis’s love for Dr. King. He also knew that Elvis was devastated by the news of Dr. King’s assassination. Just 9 miles away from Graceland (Elvis’s home). The white suit was also worn to accompany the song’s dream for better days. At the time, the conflict in Vietnam was heart wrenching. In remembrance, of the lives lost during the Vietnam war. The burgundy colored scarf Elvis wore around his neck, was for them.
    Fun fact:
Elvis performed "If I Can Dream", in the face of being explicitly told NOT TO by the producers and his manager. He was supposed to close the show with "I’ll Be Home For Christmas".
However, he chose to follow his heart & DEFY the powers that be.

As per the producer-director of the '68 special -- Steve Binder -- Elvis, Binder & others were together in the studio when they heard noise coming from the TV in the next room; it was the TV news broadcast that Robert Kennedy had just been assassinated. Binder, Elvis, et al sat up until about 4 a.m. talking about the turmoil in the world at that time w-Elvis expressing his thoughts & feelings, also the assassination of Pres. Kennedy & Vietnam. Binder asked songwriter Walter Earl Brown to compose a song based on those discussions. The song is notable for its similarities to Martin Luther King’s wish for a world of peace and harmony. The red tie was for the blood shed in Vietnam.
Elvis was so severely nervous about the special that he told Binder he didn't remember the songs, he forgot the lyrics & he wasn't going out there, & Binder said i don't care if you walk out, just say hello & walk off, but you are going out. And out he came.

Notable for its similarities with Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech, Brown wrote the song as a response to the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, which had happened a few months previously.
Knowing about Presley’s fondness for both men, he wrote "If I Can Dream" with Presley in mind.

The song is a man grieving on stage for MLK, who had just been assassinated. He was literally begging the world to stop all the hatred and to come together in love. He wanted MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech to become reality. The song and performance is NOT a generic "follow your dream" message, but a "For God's sake, why can't we come together and stop all this hatred and violence and have true equality!!"

First, it does not matter who wrote it. It matters that Elvis wants something because he loved Martin Luther king and he sang it with how he felt you can tell. This is a real emotional performance so people please. It does not matter. He grew up poor like a lot of white. People also grew up poor including me in Canada. They called me and my 2 brothers and sisters.P*** w**** t****, so guess what?We all experience different things.Elvis grapp poor and he loved hanging out with his little friend and going to Listen outside of the black churches. That's where he really got music from.Guess what?We all have a certain music in us.Does not matter.I do not like the music after the midnight's it's crap

It is believed that after Elvis sang this song, Elvis went back stage and cried.
After Elvis stopped crying, he said "I will never sing another song or act in another movie I don't believe in again". The facts are, Elvis never sang this song again. If Elvis believed in this song he would have sung it again, which he did not. Which tells me he did not believe in the song. Sorry folks. It meant nothing to Elvis.
