- Well, almost. Sort of. You see, the cheapest car in America is indeed the Versa, but not the one most folks buy. Nissan still offers a 5-speed manual transmission that is the cheapest, but most buyers are likely to get the CVT which puts the Versa third, just after the Mirage and Rio. So which inexpensive car is right for you? Let's find out.

What I liked about the early MotorWeek shows from the 1980's was that they spent most of their time reviewing affordable cars that the majority of people bought and not high end luxury and sports cars that only sold a fraction of cars that seems to dominate what the motoring press spends its time on. Kudos to Alex for reviewing a large production but affordable car!

@@waltchan Income inequality was certainly an issue in the early 1980s, it just wasn't a talking point by the political Left at the time. My suspicion for Motorweek was that they were brand new in the early '80s, using a medium (TV) that had little history in the automotive review/press and the carmakers (especially the high end carmakers) didn't see giving them the loaner cars to review was worthwhile compared to the established automotive "journalists". As Motorweek became more established, you began to see them shift to review the same high end cars and premium models that the previously established automotive press did.

That serves the American manufacturer very well, who then no longer offers us any little cars. They don't care that consumers are in debt for vehicles that exceed their needs
I bought a base manual Versa new in 2015 for $12,000. I never forget that I’m driving a cheap car, but it’s been very reliable and cheap to own. This newer generation looks better.
And you can't really go wrong with a Japanese car, generally speaking, they are still very reliable to the point where you wish that more expensive cars would get the same treatment when it comes to reliability.

I know a handful of single parents who’ve bought a versa because it was the newest cheapest car they’d b approved for-props to Nissan for providing many standard safety features from the lot. I don’t know much about the mirage, but that thing looks like my thumb could squash it...maybe even shutter its engine trying to roll over my toe
Honestly the base Versa is a pretty compelling package: no worries about the Nissan/Jatco CVT quality, being a manual. Plus, the Versa trunk is always surprisingly roomy. Combine that decent power (not 80 like the Mirage), good base content, and cheap MSRP.
can you tell more about problems with nissan cvt? i live in europe and I want to buy Dacia sandero for second car and I'm sure it has latest Nissan cvt as well.
Jatco CVTs aren’t known to be reliable. They’ve had lots of problems as they age.
@@marcinsobczak2485 the issue is Jatco, the manufacturer of Nissan's CVT transmissions. They are extremely well known to fail. It's so bad that it's not a matter of 'if', but exactly 'when'. Jatco is its own company but has always been owned mostly by Nissan. Some have had okay luck with changing the fluid in their CVTs frequently but they are still known by essentially everyone in the industry to be weak.

The Nissan is the best looking inexpensive sedan
Have to smile at reviews of the Versa speaking of the compromises you have to make because of the price, its acceleration, etc... Reason I'm smiling is because I first started driving with cheap Japanese vehicles of the late 70s and early 80s. The Versa is positively luxurious by comparison even to my first car - a hand-me-down 1977 Toyota Celica. I honestly didn't think those cars were penalty boxes at the time. Even a 1999 Mazda Protege I bought late on was totally fine for me on long road trips and the Versa is much better than that. I know people's expectations of the minimum they will accept in a new car has changed a lot, but TBH I think that's a shame. Same with new homes - gotta be bigger and better than the smaller ones from past decades. Never mind the average person or family could get by just fine with a lot less.
I agree. I can afford a BMW but I refuse. I want to live below my means and retire early. I think I'll look into this car. My 2008 Mazda3 has seen its better days its time for the boneyard 😢 😭

Really love these cheap car comparisons (Rio, Versa, etc.). One important variable that might be good to add to your comparison testing for these is a simple interior noise DB rating at, say, 30mph and 60mph... That's going to be a significant point of comparison between some cheaper cars and more expensive ones. I'm thinking about the continuum of Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross -> Toyota Rav4 -> Toyota Versa -> Lexus NX/RX...

He always does the noise DB ratings on his full tests, I'm surprised he didn't include them in these comparisons. That's why I always appreciate Alex's thorough testing, he does noise levels, 0-60 Times, braking times excetera
@@nicholasbabeaux2052 I've seen his graded score (e.g. "A-" for Elantra Hybrid), but hard to translate that. Am I missing the rubric - how fast he's driving, what the DB score is, etc.? EDIT: Ah, he says it - 72db at 50 mph...
I remove the muffler or put a glasspack on all my cars because I love noise...the louder, the better. My 98 Sentra with a manual transmission currently has a Thrush Glasspack muffler and it sounds great.

Well... it's 1/3 the average new car price. So it's cheap in a relative sense. But it's not like most of Americans have $18k lying around.

Expect 80-60k priced cars to drop; forget about the cheaper ones to drop... with Record number or people retired during covid, there is going to be labor shortage for years which means higher prices... we need to oldies to come back to work so our 12 years don't have to work the meat plants

I bought a 2024 manual Versa and I love it. Could definitely be better with a 6 speed. That's my only complaint.
Honestly this should be car of the year it has excellent mpg's Great looks tons of room and it's really safe mine took a side impact from a Jeep going 45, my car was totaled but I was ok I so impressed I seeked out another one. It's reliable and only 2610lbs and tons of room, great candidate for turbo with such light. weight.

Alex, please remember North America includes Mexico.(NAFTA?). Here the cheapest car sold today is the Hyundai Grand I10 for about $14,500., and Nissan has the March for $15k. We have now a slew of 6 Chinese car companies who arrived this year offering cheaper cars.

the economy and what people are making 20k is still a LOT of money for a car today for many people. In Eastern Europe Russia and other markets, you can get a solid basic sedan , the Lada Granta Basic at just $7575 USD! That's what I would buy.
I purchased the Sentra SR. Price was around $31K CND all in. Around $25K (about $18800 USD before fees and taxes). It has ton of features for the price. Mine is a six spd manual which for some reason it wasn't offered in the US. It even has heated steering wheel.
Vice & Versa . But Versa is available with a 5 sp in U.S. but not anymore in canada.

I bought my Versa S (automatic transmission) at the end of March for just under $17,500 in an expensive market (Phoenix). It’s been fantastic for me. Super happy with my purchase. Also worth noting I am a 6’4 220 pound man and have never felt cramped in the front or back seat.
Any trouble with the transmission
The fact that this inexpensive vehicle is available in manual transmission makes it an interesting choice for those who prefer that style of transmission that seems to be harder to find every year.

The S models with Manuals are unobtainium. There is 3-500$ in profit margin on them so we have only seen 1 in the last year for our lot

With other Automakers getting rid of small subcompact cars in America, it's crazy to think this Nissan Versa, as well as the Mitsubishi Mirage, and Kia Rio are the last ones left in its segment that's not a Crossover SUV or Electrified.
Yea, would much rather a Honda Fit with a manual transmission....I will just stick with my 98 Sentra with a manual.

Good review, Alex. Love that you take the time to review the low priced products. Personally, I would cross-shop the Kia Soul "S" with the Versa automatic. And perhaps a base Subaru Impreza hatchback. And maybe the new Chevy Trax. Or possibly a year old CPO Mazda 3.

Great review Alex. Though I prefer the 3 camera setup, it's cool seeing you change it up a bit. I've always had an issue with not being able to see what the driver is doing when I'm a passenger in a car, so the front camera view of the steering wheel is a nice touch to quell my insanity.

Why are some poking fun at the Mitsubishi Mirage? sure it's not as powerful compared to the Versa and Rio, but it's still an affordable car that gets good gas mileage like it's competitors.

I wanted a super cheap car and ended up going for the Jetta S manual. Base price $22K after destination. Its a brilliant car! It's big enough for my family of four, gets 45 mpg all day long, is very quiet and comfortable, and is pretty fun with the 6 speed manual.

@@gp5.082 it's a bit long but it's nothing to worry about. I don't mind falling below the powerband on some shifts but if you want you can just rev it up a bit more before changing gears. Maybe you'll get 42 instead of 45 mpg

They made the very cheapest model a manual for a reason. A 5 speed is certainly not cheaper to manufacture than a CVT. Its unpopular and therefore a deterent from buying it. Theyre using it as a method to advertise a low price with less risk. They probably make next to nothing the the cheapest version

The only model I am interested in is the base 5 speed model, and there is big demand for this trim level, but clearly Nissan has no intention of actually satisfying customer demand, instead trying to push buyers into much more expensive trim levels costing many thousands more. I call bait and switch on Nissan.
You need to go back to your old layout for trim options where we can actually read them/take screenshots of them.
I'd love to see the Versa and Rio go head to head against the Mirage and probably more importantly something like a Corolla/Forte/Sentra to see if its "worth" the extra money to make that jump.

All this talk of cheap new cars reminds me of when I bought a brand new Scion xA in 2004 when I was in college. The sticker price was $12,480 and it came with power windows, AC, ABS brakes. It went through so much (break ins, accidents, scary drives, a cross country move to NYC and back) but kept ticking. I had it until 2020. So sad it let it go since it was still running when I traded it in. But I needed a new car.
My first new car cost ($2500)...
$12,480 in 2004 is $20K today. It's been almost 20 years of inflation. When you bought your car in 2004, if someone reminisced about their first car costing a few thousand dollars in 1985, you would probably roll your eyes into the back of your head.

My first new car was a 1986 Sentra 4 door, A/C, 5 speed manual and a am/fm stereo, out the door for $8,200. This Versa SR has far more safety features and standard equipment than my Sentra ever had. This one looks like a better car then the Mirage, Rio or Accent.
Nissan- give me manual windows ,door locks, manual mirrors and black bumpers for $13,000...just give me air and cruise control

In 2018 I bought a new base model Versa for $11.500 cash. Now with nearly 50,000 miles the only failure was a noisy rear wheel bearing that I replaced myself for under $50. Average MPG since new is 41. Manual transmission is geared a bit low for best highway mileage.
I've got the EV version of the Versa, the Chevy Bolt EV. Bought it in 2019 for ~$21k (after factoring in federal and state tax incentives). After driving it for 4.5 years and 150k miles, I figure it has saved me ~10k in fuel and maintenance versus a similarly-sized gas car like the Versa. So, in effect my Bolt EV has only cost me about $11k, and if I keep putting on miles at my current rate, it'll basically be a free car in like 5 years.
I have a 2020 Bolt, but with far fewer miles. You average like 90 miles a day. Do you charge overnight or use fast charging? How is the battery range holding up? You probably got a replacement battery through the recall program. I am still on the original battery.
@@TheGerm24 We charge overnight and very rarely use fast charging. The cost of fast charging would really eat into and nearly eliminate any savings potential. I think our battery got replaced at around 85,000 miles, and so far no noticeable degradation. We are leaving a little range on the table though since we ditched the original tires and went with the Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires, much better grip but anywhere from a 5-10% loss in range comes with that. It's well worth it though if you're not constantly up against the limits of your range though. Sure, it costs a little more money in terms of reduced efficiency, but they grip a lot better than the stock tires. No more slipping and chirping.
Nissan makes decent cheap cars. The CVT is questionable, but otherwise I think Nissan gives you a great package for cheap.
Nissan have updated their CVTs so they are more reliable. In fact even in their old CVTs the problems are usually with the large CVT SUVs or when paired with a big engine. This light small versa with smaller engined paired with the CVT is probably the most reliable. In fact Hyundai CVT just as bad if not worse than Nissan.

I have a 2008 Versa hatch since 2010. Still my daily driver. Do I have money to buy something better? Sure I do, but I don't want to. It drives great and has great room inside for the size

Curiously the manual Versa is no longer available in Canada. Now only the Sentra is offered with a 6 sp. manual in 'S' trim. for 2k$ more than a 'S' cvt Versa.
This car is made for for work, driving around town doing errands. Reliable and great on gas.
I remember the days when Steel Belted tires were listed as std features, when back windows didn't have defrosters, when ac was a dealer installed option and a lot of cars didn't have radios.
There was a dealer near me that used to take a car, have leather installed for 1k, now you pay 4k for mark-up
I can't believe all the equipment it has. My 2011 Infiniti G37s doesn't have height adjustable belts or rear side air bags. It should have at least 150 hp. I remember the 95 Accord EXL being around 18k with leather, moonroof and 150hp from a 2.2l I believe.
It would be nice if they had a reliability option. Where it would come with metal valve covers and oil pans so many are plastic now.
I love my 2024 Nissan Versa!
I'd rather have this Versa than the Rio. I find it more attractive inside & and out, it offers a better feature set, and the lack of certain active and passive safety features on the Rio is a deal-breaker. This feels worth the extra $2K at MSRP for a loaded-to-loaded versions, as it's still a good deal cheaper than a Sentra or Corolla. I also have not read of issues with this generation of Nissan CVTs in the Versa application, so that "advantage" for the Rio is not really one for me.
Two minor quibbles/corrections in this video - a) if, as stated in this video, the Versa stops in 120, the Rio is not "quicker braking" (at 125 feet as tested) than this Versa. b) a three year old Camry (or any OEM that I can think of really) isn't totally out of warranty at 3 years - there's still powertrain left. And, the argument at the end of this video (new v. used) also ignores the existence of OEM CPO programs, also a big factor.
Re: the new vs used larger vehicle. It also ignores current market realities, in my area these Versas used in S trim w/30K on them are priced above the new MSRP. There's no way anyone is touching a used Corolla/Camry/Civic/Accord for anywhere near the price of these unless it's 10+ years old and 100K+ miles at the moment.
Owner of 2015 Base 4 spd - Non CVT - I put a few pounds more pressure on the tires w/ nothing in trunk except spare. if I'm on highway driving NYC to Atlantic city N.J. no traffic I get 45- 48 MPG. on avg city highway I get the 38-40 or city stop & go 30 MPG can't complain.
I rented one of these a few weeks ago and drove it around hilly New Hampshire. It was fun. It's got more power than a Chevy Spark.
Reminds me so much of my base '03 Corolla, but with a lot more niceties. It felt boujee to have A/C, power locks and mirrors in a base model with no ABS or TC.

Mirage FTW! I love mine! Even when it can be mildly annoying at times but that’s a car with a SOUL lol. It forgivable!
As an around town car the Mirage is great. For 3+ hour highway drives it's maddening. Had one as a rental and did a 400 mile day in it.
Very curious what the manual Versa ones performance wise. If feel like it would be a second quicker to 60 compared to that awful Jatco CVT. That said I would still take the Rio over the Versa because of how terrible the Jatco CVT is and that the Rio has a better warranty and I like Kia’s tech over Nissan. I am also curious how bad the base base Corolla is compared to this top trim Versa. Would love to see that comparison

There are Manufacturers who offer decent warranties on their CPO cars. I bought a 3-year-old CPO Volvo with my optional 10 years (from in-service date) and unlimited miles warranty, all for about $22,500 TTL with said warranty. Still have 3.1 years on the warranty clock that has already paid for itself. There are decent options IMO.
The '08 Focus was priced almost exactly as the Versa is now. One has many more features than the other.
There is a lot to be said for a value car. I had a Hyundai Accent that was absolutely no-frills (no Bluetooth!!) but it was dirt cheap to run and was perfect for my commute. I rented a '16 Versa for work and thought it very similar. I nearly bought one, but instead went with the crowd and got something more expensive and comfortable as a treat, but I would have one of these great little cars in a heartbeat.
Was the Hyundai reliable? Like, no major expensive repairs and such? That's what I feel like you lose out on in this category of econobox compared to the Civic and Corolla.

Stagflation at its best. Tokyo big mac is cheaper than Seoul big mac...
Mitsubishi was always a bargain brand amongst the JDMs, ain't anything new...Mitsubishi is a huge company, their car business was really always a side gig...at the end of the day, loved cars like Eclipse/3000GT were DSM products not solely done by Mitsubishi.. Nissan was always affordable, they just happen to be one of the few left selling subcompact that isn't a crossover/SUV. Not like HKG have offered anything remotely close to R35, Juke-R or upcoming Nismo Z so silly to say they "surpassed" them..
Hyundai and Kia are still generally cheaper across the board than any other brand, and the 100k mile warranty and extensive standard features still make them the primary value brand. Nissan and Mitsubishi are just late in exiting the North American small car market. Increasing cafe regulations that decentivize small cars and customer preference of crossovers has killed the market and the few remaining vehicles will eventually stop being sold here.

So I drove a 2022 Versa SV for like 5,000 miles, it was a really good car, sure a bit underpowered but it felt Peppy enough and I have a model 3 long-range, and a BMW 330i. I was pretty hard on it and I was getting 35 miles per gallon. The base Versa is a great deal but I would definitely go with the SR because of the adaptive cruise control and the leatherette and an abundance of other features not available on the SV, but for like $1,800 more you can get a loaded Nissan kicks which I happen to think look pretty damn good....😂
The Kicks would certainly be a lot more practical with its squared-off rear end.

Have they fixed their CVT issues?
I hope so since i purchased a 2022 Versa. Although Nissan just recently settled a lawsuit over the CVT it looks like the majority of the problems occured between 2012-2017. I didn't see too many complaints from owners of the 2020-2022 models so i went with it because 43.5 mpg! Woo hoo!
Almost every Hyundai and Kia car in SoCal has a markup, and the salesman are super cocky as if you are begging them to sell you a car. I just skip them all together, besides I don’t want people steal my new ride with a USB drive.😂

If I ran nissan, I would replace the cvt with dual clutches you could get nearly the same mpg. I wonder how much of the reliability is due to lack of maintenance

Alex has good taste! I too want a base Nissan Versa with the 5-speed! I just wish the interior and exterior came in cool colors like my 2013 Chevy spark has. I'm worried in 5 years, by the time I'm ready for a new car, there won't be a single car under $30K, Every car will have a CVT, Every car will be a CUV, SUV, or Truck.
It is near impossible to find a 2023 Nissan Versa S, manual, for MSRP $16,925 where I live. Even if a dealership has one in stock, they normally come with installed add-ons (think carpets, rear spoiler, the center armrest addition), which ticks the MSRP to about $18,000 including destination charge.
Alex, would you still say that $18,000 for the five-speed manual S, without Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, is an intriguing value proposition?
Alex probably would say it depends on how much you’re willing to compromise. Everyone is different. I gave up looking for one. It is not a unicorn anymore.
$18k is a lot of $ these days and with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto being mainstreamed for 6+years, it a slap in a face to the shopper especially when it does make the driving experience easier!
You could go aftermarket but that would be a dumb preventative expensive route to chase for.
Alex, please change the camera views back to previous shots. It is making me dizzy. Great review, love the Versa value, unfortunately the dealers give you couple of grand of fees on top of the price so it kills the deal for me as it puts you in the 20k land.
Near my area, availability for these least expensive cars like the Nissan Versa, Kia Rio and Mitsubishi Mirage is pretty bad. Corolla is actually OK, not plentiful but I can see them listed on the dealer website. If these are more available, I'd definitely think about it. Hopefully these inexpensive cars will continue to be built for some more years.
One can get an even ‘greater different brand’ used car’ for the base price. A 2020 Honda Accord ex with 36,000 miles for $16,000 for example.
The new Versa is a great value. I sold Toyota in 1994 and a nicely equipped Corolla would run you about $15-16k. That would get you air conditioning, power windows/door locks (no remote key fob), and about 115hp. AM/FM and a cassette player, no infotainment screen. You get pretty much all of these things in the most base Versa for under $17k. While the current Corolla has more interior room, the ones built in the 90's had interior room closer to the specs in this car. Something to think about.
I love the first generation Versa. It was limo spacious and extremely comfortable with an enormous trunk (or hatch.) The new one is nicer looking and better equipped but the bones are not as good.

I own a 2022 Kia Rio and have test driven a Sentra with a CVT. The Rio feels more powerful than Sentra. As for my own Rio, I am able to get about 48mpg on the highways at 65, and as much as 42-44 with Texas speeds. I got my Rio used in 2023 Jan with about 26k miles on it, I've put another 8k in a year.
Tried hard to find a Versa SR, or any Versa, in the area but very scarce so our daughter ended up with a Sentra. The dealer had about 8 of those so could even get a color, and it has all the modern safety gear. She was just hoping to spend a few grand less.
the safety package for the MSRP is incredible. also I guess it looks better than corolla IMO

For everybody clamoring for the 5-speed. We had a 2018 it would tack for 4000 rpm at 85 miles an hour on the interstate which was intolerable. The CVT rolls about 2000 rpm depending on headwind and grade. What it needs is a 6-speed Manuel.
It maybe the cheapest car in america, but I haven't found a dealer who doesn't add "dealer markup" especially with car shortage from Toyota.
Inexpensive cars to buy new or used are always welcome especially since most of us aren't the 1%. When these inexpensive cars go on the used car market, they're a godsend for those who can't afford brand new. It's a win-win for all of us especially when the standard feature content is exactly as described in this review.
I would have loved to have A/C, remote start, adaptive cruise control, AEB, and all of the other standard content from this Versa in my 1999 Dodge Neon. The Neon was a gift to our family since we couldn't afford anything for me to drive when I was still in high school or community college.
The Neon was a better car than most people might believe, but it didn't come out until 1994 as a 1995 model. I know because I was looking to buy a work travel car back then, and I ended up with a Geo Prizm (Corolla) because the Dodge people were having trouble supplying the brand new Neon in quantity. And the local dealer just didn't want to make the effort to find me one, so that ticked me off lol. I liked the Prizm for what it was, it was a reskinned Toyota after all, but the Neon felt like a step up for sure. Very innovative for the time.
And I never did buy one, though I did drive one a friend of mine had modified to race and man, was it fast.
@@k.b.tidwell Woops! You are correct! I don't know why I thought it was a 1991 model year now that I think back. My Dodge Neon was actually a 1999 model year. I remember now because our family bought a used 1998 Chevy Suburban.

Yeah, they go quick. I got the last 2023 Versa S from a dealership and they told me they sold them out quick. All of them were bought out within a couple of months.
