It's crazy how good Tobey is in this scene. All he said was "There!", but his expressions and body language say so much about how conflicted he is at the moment.
Although most of us will never be able to relate to just what this man went through, with captivity and forced murder, most Veterans can very much relate to that feeling of isolation upon return home. It feels as if the world went on without you, and you're families learned to live without you, so you're almost intruding on their lives when you return. It's that strange duality of waiting 12 or more months to come home, and praying you make it, only to internally want to go back over, once you do return. You live on adrenaline for so long, that the normal world shrinks in complexity. The simple choices of home life drive you to the point of being mentally unhinged. Picking out what brand of toilet paper at the grocery store will make you furious, furious as to how every walks around so nonchalantly, living life, unaware of what is happening over the pond. It's trying to use your hands to love you wife, play with your child, wrap a present, pay a bill, when your hands have memorized the shape of a rifle, the quick steps to clear a malfunction, and the ways to render combat first aid to a brother. You can't train a dog to kill, surround him with it, engulf his life with it, and then expect said animal to come back and go about a normal life of a family puppy. The dog will always remember
Ok so law enforcement and a emt here I gotta disagree. Humans are made to compartmentalize. Its how we function. Ive scooped up people on the side of the road and carried an entire large family who where murder out of there house and stacked them in a ambulance untill blood flowed out of the back doors. We went back to the station and we where asleep in 10 minuets. Almost forgot about it the next morning untill we saw it on the news. Stuff happens. @@christianholt2899 well you can't help it really since he played Peter Parker pretty damn well. making fun of him with those Spider-Man memes for playing a different roll is what makes me mad. that's just not it, isn't it
It's a shame people will only see him as spiderman. He is such a phenomenal actor and yet he can only be remembered for one film. Oscar worthy performance in this film.
Had to scroll to far for this comment. In training they teach you never to trust the word of your enemy. Chances are even after killing his friend, they'd torture him for leverage and behead him anyways. Not to mention, I'd much rather take a bullet to the head than have to be haunted by the memory of beating my friend to death, or potentially get tortured even more.
At 1:36 the soliders face ( who is also a phenomenal actor) really gets to me as he inevitably knows his fate and genuinely wants it to be over and crying. Personally I could never to what tobey did even though it seems like the only option to get home and be free .It just made me realise how war is nothing like in the movies, even though this is a movie.
Something to throw out there, remember Tobey's character told his friend not to relay any information to them no matter what. His 'friend' ended up telling them almost everything betraying tobey in a way. The bent up Frustration, Being tortured, and feeling betrayed by a comrade must have got to him. made him snap in a sense, sure thats his bro but a true soldier wouldn't relay personal information to the enemy their trained for that, but he did letting tobey down. the Anger he felt of not being able to escape or see his family and the pressure put on his shoulders made him react randomly and kill his 'friend' he wanted to see his family again, he isn't just a soldier he's a family man which drove him to make that choice. i respect the whole 'I would have done it differently' thing but SERIOUSLY, how would you really know? we're you ever put into that situation before? if so tell me but until then we'll keep this Neutral.
2 years late but no one is really "trained" to endure pain, unless you go through Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape (SERE), which is just available for special operations teams mostly. Everyone else is merely told. Most people cannot endure pain and it is instinct to do whatever it takes to end. But you're in the sense of the movie, Toby probably was angry at his comrade
Hard to imagine being in this situation, and hard for anyone who hasn't served to believe what I'm about to say, but I believe that nearly every brother in arms would choose death here. Bonds formed in combat are unimaginably strong. I'll add that I haven't seen the film, so maybe these guys didn't actually serve together, but out of context I found the scene difficult to believe although the acting was tremendous.
It's very questionable to say the truth. No one can blame him for what he did or did not. It's like cannibalism, everyone say it's not right but many people did it in order to survive. The same is in the shoulders of the Taliban that force such a choice in the first place. After that every action it is acceptable.
"Tobey’s eye acting here is phenomenal. He conveys an avalanche of emotions of pain, hurt, empathy, regret, sorrow, hope, and understanding of the anger that he once went through. So much is said without saying a word."
Can't remember, that's the one where the heroes are forced to reveal their identities right? And Peter Parker beats kingpin to near death? Fuck yeah. This movie really shows Tobey Maguire's real acting skills. Haha. I pictured him raging after that. Fuck. I hope so.
I'm getting annoyed of them always going for a teenaged Peter Parker. Like, REALLY? Come on! That's what almost every one so far has been about. Can't we work up to when he's actually in his mid twenties? A little more complex, mentally? Maybe it's because I just graduated high school a little over a month ago and am kind of sick of teenagers already and that's affecting my judgement, but dang. I'd like something a little different.
I hated this moment but I thought about what Toby told him, “don’t tell them anything” and the guy ended up talking, now losing value, Toby tried to warn him and now was forced to kill him or die
That's real stuff right there though. Even if he didn't speak, he probably would've gone through with it. That's your ticket out the door, to see your family and live your life. We can all say we would die with our bro, but honestly, it's not until we are in that same situation that we find the real answer.
If this was a real situation they would have him behead his comrade with a knife and then kill him as well. But for convenient reasons they didnt do that.
In my opinion, most soldiers would stay loyal to their brothers and be killed. There is no way i could kill one of my fellow men because the enemy told me.
He's away from his family and tortured while in belief that he will die there no matter what. Given the option...what choice does he have?! Danish version is a bit better.
MikeysFitness You don't even know that until you're in that situation for yourself. Nobody in this comment section that have never been in a situation like this have 0% room to state their probable actions. Nobody.
Man I swear to god after I come back from hell that this man has been through and I see my wife sleeping with my brother. I will go on a freaking murder rampage not thinking about the consequences. The trauma he had to go through can't be fixed by any drug or any therapy. God bless our veterans.

Now I've never been on a battelfield so that may be different but people see terrible things every day and we move on. I dont remember what any of those people looked like and it was only a year or so ago.

He didn't kill his brother, he killed his comrade.
T. Quadson Jr. He meant "brother" as his comrade. It's commonly used in U.S. military and law enforcement.

I mean, not if you get immersed in the film. I don’t see Andrew Garfield as Spiderman in every film
true
this is case for a lot of actors
If he starred in more popular films/franchise he can be seen more than Spider-Man.
