During a tense family dinner, Sam (Tobey Maguire) explodes at his daughter, Isabelle (Bailee Madison), and she retaliates with some very hurtful comments.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jim Sheridan's film, adapted from Susanne Bier's 2004 movie, concerns Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), a Marine who receives orders to ship out for yet another tour of duty in Afghanistan. But before he leaves his supportive wife, Grace (Natalie Portman), and his two elementary-school-age daughters, Sam picks up his black sheep brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has finished a prison stretch for robbing a bank. While overseas, Sam's aircraft gets shot down and he's thought dead. Back home, irresponsible Tommy gets his act together in order to be an anchor for Grace and the girls, and the two grow emotionally -- though not physically -- close. As the family finally begins to make peace with their grief, soldiers rescue POW Sam and he returns home. Sam's experiences overseas have caused him such emotional turmoil, he has a difficult time adjusting to civilian life, and soon his fear and paranoia manifest themselves in the form of jealousy for his brother's relationship with his wife. Sam Shepard and Mare Winningham co-star as the brothers' father and stepmother.

When the little girl said "you were in stupid Afghanistan" and no one corrected her I knew the mom was doing something behind his back so she won't miss him. This movie is just amazing, especially the acting from Tobey Maguire.
All the mom did was kiss the brother right after they thought he was dead. The second the girl saw the brother with the blonde she was upset.

Lili Rodriguez I think he did do wrong after he came back. Yes, being in a war changes you, especially what happened to him, but to say it’s out of his control is kind of being light on him and his ordeal. Yes it was out his control on what happened to him, but that’s not an excuse to make when he is tearing up the house, becoming a danger to his family, pointing a gun at his wife and brother and trying to commit suicide by cop to get rid of his guilt. I think people overlook these things and just see that he was a soldier and his brother and wife had a romance, even though he was confirmed dead, so they get mad cause that’s what typical people do. It’s not out of his control to talk to someone or to go get help, which he really needed. His family did try to understand him, help him, and they tried to pick up where they left off but he made himself the stranger. You can’t really help or try to understand someone when they don’t open up and let you know whats wrong, he never asked for help until the very end of the movie when he was already placed in that facility.

She's not a "brat." She was experiencing very real and hard-to-handle emotions. She was acting out because she didn't know how else to deal with them. She's a little kid; kids don't know how to regulate or express their feelings to the same extent adults do. Shoot, sometimes adults don't even know how. Perhaps you should educate yourself. Also, people don't "got suffered from war"; they suffer from PTSD *due* to the circumstances and experiences of war/battle.

This scene makes me tear up every time. The actor for the girl did perfect in the role of a bratty kid who doesn't understand why her dad keeps leaving for war and when she starts making up the lies it reminded me of me so much when I was younger. She definitely sounded like a mistaught kid with parent issues. Tobey is also perfect. He keeps a straight face of horror, betrayal, and anger, but it turns out that the girl is lying but Sam in unaware. Great scene.
I think the girl was trying to trigger Sam's PTSD since, rubbing a balloon could sound similar to a barrage of bullets to someone with severe PTSD or she was trying to piss him off so she had a reason to snap back at him

It’s insane how many people are vilifying the child in this scenario. Yes, her father has been through hell and deserves all the empathy/understanding/help he can get, but the girl has also been through a lot and is in emotional pain. It doesn’t have the be an either/or situation. War destroys lives on both sides and has a ripple effect on loved ones.

Despite kids her age not understanding what her father went through, that's no way to talk to a father, no way to talk to a man who returned from war. The kid who played the little girl played her role so well.
Im still amazed how Tobey acted the role of real PTSD in this scene. The way his posture is different than the others, the distracted look in his eyes, when he tenses up and breathes faster when the girl rubs the balloon.
You can also notice how he Moves his eyes when Isabelle is doing that gun-like noises, like he's trying to detect from where the Sound comes from.

The reason why I love this scene so much is that I understand children, she's acting out because she knows her parents aren't being real and they aren't loving her. Every word she says is full of resentment, she's just a kid. Her acting is amazing and this just shows the reality.

When I was six I told my mom “I can’t believe dad married you”. I didn’t mean it, I was just upset that she had told me to do something or was mad at me for not cleaning my room. Something like that. I think when we’re little we want to say things that make us sound grown up so that people will take us seriously. I haven’t seen the movie (though this scene is very well-acted and I kind of want to now), but from what this scene says, Isabelle is feeling like nobody cares for her. So she tries to say something hurtful and goes too far.

Tobey is just excellent at transmiting emotions, something most actors are not too good at. It doesn't matter if its happiness, sadness, rage, fear, Tobey can pull off almost anything and it doesn't even feel like acting, it feels genuine and it makes you feel like if you were part of the scene, just like in this clip right here, Tobey is just that great, i love that guy
