REMEMBER: NOTHING IS IDIOT PROOF. (If you are an idiot, don't watch my channel) PERFECTION OIL HEATERS are a great back up and supplement heat source for the Prepper. 1888 the Cleveland Foundry Company was formed. They manufactured a line of oil lamp stoves. In 1894, the plant started producing portable heaters. The Perfection product lineup was extremely important to the growth of American civilization. By 1918, over 5,000,000 heaters were in use. By 1922, over 3,000,000 Perfection kitchen stoves and ranges were in use in American homes! A sizeable percentage of households used a Perfection product on a daily basis. The "Golden Age" of the Perfection Stove Co. lasted from 1916 until the middle 1950's. It was not until well after WW II that electric power lines were finally strung throughout rural areas. And by the 1950's, the cost of electricity in cities had been reduced significantly.

In the late 40's & 50's I sold these at my grandmother's hardware store 'Wright's Furniture & Hardware' in Plant City Fl. Back in those days, it was the only heat that some people had. Perfection also made cabinet floor models that were vented to a flue pipe, and hooked up to a kerosene tank on the outside of the house..

I grew up in a house heated by a wood stove and kerosene. I recently was given a Perfection heater by a man retiring to Florida and will be doing a restoration myself. Along with your thoughts on the prepping aspect being a multi fuel product, I am entertaining the thoughts of cooking on top of these in case of emergencies. Not only are they beautiful, but very useful and will last many lifetimes if well cared for. Great video, Thank you for showing us your wonderful collection.

Perfection heaters are what we used for heat when I was a kid. We had two. One like the blue heater in the video for upstairs and the other was nicer. It had the glass globe for downstairs. Never thought twice about them. Kept the house warm during winter.

I finally found a great one-it's a model 550 with the brass font. I had to free up the wick and give it a good clean, but now it's looking fantastic. I really like the red on yours; it looks great!

Great to see these being looked after and appreciated. I owned one once and used it both indoors and in workshop. During Scottish winters placing metal tools on it for a while was much appreciated whilst working on engines.

We love our Perfection Heater. We purchased it over a year ago as an alternative heating source of course, but it is also soothing to look at and reconnects us to the history of a time when people developed lasting ideas that kept on working. Thank you for showing the maintenance and simplicity of this heater.

I just picked up two of these myself this weekend, I got one of the model 425s for $25s and a model 525 for $40, I used some zip strip to pull a coat of black paint off of the blue enamel, and have been working away with the bench grinder to pull off whatever rust and corrosion are on the other pieces, I am pretty excited to get these things up and going, they are really good looking stoves.

I first learned about these heaters in October of 2011. I was setup at an outdoor festival with some other folks and it was fairly cold in the pole barn where we were. One guy went to his truck, pulled one of these out, fired it up and I was amazed at the heat output. Along comes 2012, same group, same festival and sure enough cold weather again. Same guy hauls out his heater and we are warm. That should have been my hint to get one but with other things going on I never got around to it. Now comes October 2013, same group again, same festival but warmer weather ... to start. Half way through here comes the cold! Our friend smiles, heads to the truck and you know what he pulls out. At this point I am on a mission I tell him, so off I head, hitting every antique dealer at the festival. Not one of these to be found. Then this older gentleman stops by where we are, a truck full of antiques he is looking to get rid of as he is getting out of the business. Several of us go to see what he has and there it is! A Perfection 730, looks different than these in the video but the tank/gallery/flame spreader assembly are just like these. I crawl through and over several piles of stuff in this truck because I was going to own this! Once I got it into the light I was taken aback and the apparent condition as it was completely rusted. My buddy who has brought his all these years helps with the inspection and other than rust there is nothing wrong with it. Purchased for $15. Though I haven't had time to repaint it yet, I cleaned the tank assembly, bought a new wick and filled it up, sure enough .... HEAT! These are awesome! I have since found another, a Perfection 525M, at an auction that is in better condition though it could use a paint job it still has the original paint on it with only minor rust for its age. It still has an original wick and once I cleaned the old kerosene out of it, let it dry and refilled the tank with fresh kerosene it fired right up. I am still on the hunt for at least 3 more as I live in an 1800's home and these fit right along with the feel of the house plus I live in an area where power outages in the winter are common and these will keep me warm enough for as long as I have fuel for them if needed. Great video!

When I was six years old , 1959 , we lived in the weeds in the air castle. My dad had us on a starvation farm that had a two story farm house.
It was made of green wood and it leaked air horribly. This the air castle..
I was upstairs at the furthest place from the wood stove.
So dad found me an old perfection heater. He showed me how to care for it and every evening I would get it ready to go.
The wick lasted forever as long as you did not let it run out of fuel.
We used coal oil in it and it had a great kind of chicken poop smell..
We moved in 1964 and I loaded my heater into the truck. My mom said we were going to give it to my grand pa.
I told her it was my heater and I wasn’t going to freeze in the winter. Dad explained to me about coal heat and venting.. he had bought a house in St. Louis with a coal furnace..
So we went to St. Louis and grand pa didn’t get my heater... coal heat sounded like magic and I didn’t trust it..
I still have my heater... I think electric heat is a fad....

Thank you so much for this video! I can't tell you how excited I am to find out about these little gems...never knew they existed. I have a cabin that has only been used in the summer for about a decade. Snow partially caved in the roof and broke the pipe to the antique wood stove. The stove itself is now unsafe to use anyway as it has rusted out over the years. We had a real dilemma on getting heat into this little cabin because it apparently was built around the antique wood stove! No getting it out without tearing out a wall or tearing up the stove, which would break my heart. Even if we could get it out we would have to spend thousands getting the area up to speck to install anything new. Now I just have to find a couple of these perfection heaters! So excited!

It's the year 2023 now, gas prices in Europe are sky high and heating costs for an average house can go up to 600 to 800 euro a month. Not for us thanks to these great and beautiful heaters. In Europe we got Valor heaters which is the European brand for the Perfection heater. We have two 525T heaters and still amazed how these little rings of white fire get so insanely hot! Getting the cold out of a 50 M2 living room is no problem for these (just using one)! These are truly genius in their simplicity.

Acetone excels in removing carbon and dried fuel residue. (Paint too! Adequate ventilation is a must, as well as lack of open flame!) Works especially well in glass lamp bowls. In the late 1800's, prior to the production of kerosene, oil lamps and heater used coal oil, known today as mineral spirits. In many (but not all) areas, mineral spirits are less expensive than K-1. Haven't run my Alladin Blue Flame on it yet, but all my lamps do. Miles Stair's site has a great article on it.

I know your video is pretty old, but, I found it today and I have been using these kero heaters for 20 or more years. Electricity is bloody expensive, and even wood now here in Australia is bloody expensive. So, I was able to pick up a few of these heaters at garage sales etc and they work good. Of course I don't live anywhere near snow etc, but the cost of running these heaters are cheaper than anything else around. If you are still UA-cam, does the 'chimney' sit directly on the fuel tank? I think the 'chimney', or the hinged top part, is supposed to be sitting ON the fuel tank when closed so it can draw air for the wick...Yes/No? These heaters are great space heaters, not those crappy ones which dry your eyes out as the heat is reflected AT you, these are more space heaters, or room heaters, with the heat not directed at your face but more heating up the entire room etc.

This is what I have been looking for something nice looking and will take the chill off.
we rarely get below freezing and the house is well insulated so this is ideal for when I don't want to start a big fire in the fireplace. Plus in shtf no smoke may be better.
Do we need to have some sort of barrier under it? like tilte or bricks? you said the bottom dosent get that hot so maybe not.

Perfection 730. I turned it up to the highest wick setting and held a cooking thermometer over the top. Unfortunately, my thermometer only goes up to 392 degrees. The thermometer QUICKLY rose up past 392 and error’d out. Bottom line: you can cook on top of the Perfection 730 if need be. Probably possible to cook on the other Perfection kerosene heaters too.

I just bought a new kerosene heater from the hardware store. It has a huge cage around it that makes it almost impossible to move out the door and the handle is terrible. I really love my old perfection heater, I got mine for free, some one was throwing it away b/c the wick was burned down, you can only find replacements online, I redid the wick, then later bought some fiberglass filters on sale in spring and resized them to fit my heater. the way they work is so simple yet so good, that i made a small version out of oil lamp parts and "tin cans" with some sheet metal that i use for camping, one of the greatest things i found for free, great video as always YP

Nice presentation. I have a couple Model 735 Glass heaters, and it does a nice job lighting up the room as well as heating it. I do mix some lamp oil in with the Kero to produce a whiter light about 1/3 : 2/3. Only other comment I would add is, the fuel tank can get pinhole leaks. If it does, solder does the job, it there are a lot, you can spray in a rubberized liner--albeit a bit expensive.

@DoverPipes well i guess he already said it in the white texts first in the video.
its as safe as a heater can be, without the fear of short circuits and other malfunctions the electric ones have.
i currently have a zibro kerosene heater on, and it generates an enormous amount of heat.
it does 0,25 liter an hour(so its saving my heating bill also).
i like it a lot, and i bought it originally for my preps, but now i burn it everyday just for ambiance, i bought extra parts for it too.

Most just need a good cleaning and new wick plus repainting. Where do you suggest getting a new wick? I bought a 525 model that is in good condition, just needs a wick and a good cleaning. I only paid $25.00.

Thank you so much for the tip, I love it. I ordered one with the glass globe It's the closest we're going to get to a fireplace in our upstairs apartment (sad no?) and in an emergency it can provide light heat and heat up a pot of soup all at the same time without wasting fuel. By the time I got it it had already started to heat up in southern California so I won't really know how it does till around Christmas but it is easy on the eyes and if things work out I'll probably get a 525. Now if we could just figure out the best off grid A/C lol...

God Bless

I watched this video years ago and found a blue one. The chrome plating needs painted. Do another video about these. How did they hold up and did you need to buy any parts apart from a new wick over the years? Do you still use them?

I just scored a Perfection Number 530 Heater for only $20 at a consignment store! I was wondering if high heat engine paint would work for my refurbishment purposes. Thank you very much for confirming my hypothesis. I'm planning on putting together a video of the start to finish process for others as well. Thanks again! I'm very excited about this great project heater!

A caution, they do put out considerable carbon monoxide, you must have lots of ventilation. You fire one of these in a closed room and fall asleep you will not wake up. That said they are a good heater, I have a couple myself, and they are nice for cooking on, and as a backup heater, but be careful with them. Your best paint for them is commonly sold for grills.

very cool video.... I just bought four of them for $20.00 at a garage sale and they all work great now after a resto and paint they will be beautiful.... I would have never known about them without this video.... thank you so very much.... My wife loves the way they look and I love the fact that they are that extra little insurance when the power goes out during ice storms and we can help relieve some of the power drain on the back-up generator.... thank you again yankee.....

you are right yankee i sell wood stoves everyday. the quality has went down. It was once if you built something that lasted 20,30 yrs you were a great company ! Now you are lucky to find something to last as long as the warranty! Jotul is one of the last great stoves . Originally a norwegian stove. They do have a plant in maine now .If you are looking for a good stove try one of the Jotul brand stoves. Great video keep up the great work!!

Does a stove warm a home better than a fireplace? I've never had either one and I"m curious.
