What a great mare Sunline was. She wasn't really a stayer, and yet she ran the mighty Lonhro to a neck over 2000 metres. At WFA up to 1600 metres, she was almost unbeatable. And yes, I won a packet on her. The biggest being the 1999 Cox Plate when I got 5/1.
@@joshuahillman6349 . Sunline must have been shocked. Lohnro, can noticably see the finer build to Sunline but stormed home. You hear much less of Lohnro but shouldn't.
@@joshuahillman6349 Lonhro was lethal with a moderate tempo..especially 1500 at Rosehill...He got run off his legs a couple of wks later at MV when Sunline set up a frantic tempo with Northerly Defier and Grandera and finished well back...
Would love to have seen Lonhro in the UK. I'm very disappointed that he never won a Cox Plate so his record remains, in my opinion, incomplete!!!!!!!! Remember watching him win the Mackinnon Stakes on replay in Sth Africa. He was a fucking beast of a horse!!!!!!!!
Sunline had it easy for the first 4f (800m) to the point where she was slightly over-racing. In races futher than 1600m Sunline was at her best when given her head with 800m to run as she got her opponents off the bit and broke their hearts. Considering she could sustain a long run at high speed it was tactically sound to go early in an attempt to nullify Lonhro's finishing sprint. The time was a race record that still stands for the Yalumba Stakes since the Caulfield track was rebuilt in 1996.
Many people think that Lonhro spent too much fuel chasing down Sunline, and this probably accounted for Lonhro's failure shortly after in the Cox Plate.
I think it is a case that the Valley suited Sunline more than Lonhro....generally speaking the mare’s style up on the bunny vs the wind up/turn of foot brilliance. They are my two favourite horses ever. So many spine chilling moments, from Aus Cup to HK Mile. Thanks for the memories you beautiful equines.
The rain and the ride killed his Cox Plate chances that year. Beadman left it too late and by the time he got wound up, the leader was too far in front.

The Caulfield Stakes is obviously a Cox Plate trial but Hawkes wanted to win against Sunline so much there was nothing in the tank for 2 weeks later, plus he was never going to beat Northerly or Sunline in that yrs Cox Plate, but a great battle this was.
Both these Champions r better than anything Winx ever yes ever ran against never took on Overseas Champions never left Australia if she ran in Europe or Hong Kong against the best & beat them then yes u r up there with Sunline & Phar Lap but u never did the Australian & New Zealand Breeding Industry would of loved Winx to race overseas & expose her to the best around at the time

Using solely the cox plate to benchmark the horse is negligent. Northerly raced Lonhro just the once and never won in Sydney which is a pretty huge blackmark on his record. The head to head of Lonhro and Defier does not favour Defier at all and so isn't exactly a fair point of comparison. Sunline had the best record of the 3 by far but in terms of out and out ability, most pundits give the benefit to Lonhro. With the exception of So You Think (the best horse since 2000), no other 'stallion' has had the racing career or longevity of Lonhro since either which is a fact worth remembering
