Winx and the great mare Zenyatta from the US have the same sire, Street Cry. Both were come from behind horses. laying back and zooming past the field in the stretch. Zenyatta won her first 19 races of her career, certainly nothing like 33 in a row. And in the US, mares usually dont race against the male horses like in Australia. I always thought Winx's greatest performance, by my eye, was the 2018 Turnbull win 8 lengths behind at the 300 and with a wall of horses in front of her I remember turning to my partner and saying "she can't win from there". She won by a length pulling away. I recently stumbled on this..... Her stride average is 23 to 23.5 feet, which is moderate, but in the Warwick Stakes, where she broke slowly, as she would do on occasion, Winx got out to 24.58 feet, which is a full foot longer than her average stride length. Her cadence is 2.63 strides per second. By contrast, Ulysses, in winning the G1 Juddmonte International at York in 2018, had a stride length of 23.16 and a cadence of 2.53 strides per second. Top European sprinter Harry Angel recorded the same figures in one major win. Winx could do better than both of these outstanding horses, and at the latter stages of a race. Physicist Dr Graeme Putt, from the University of Auckland, said Winx had been known to put in 2.7 strides per second, compared to the average of 2.3 for other horses. Practically, what this means is that, per minute, Winx could move 170 lengths compared to 140 by most other horses. She could not only lengthen her stride when she needed to, but quicken it, which was responsible for her devastating turn of foot and why she could close late in a race so easily. While track comparisons are certainly not determinative, in the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Mile, won by Expert Eye, the pace was 24.68 and 49.85 early, with 24.80 for the final furlong, but Winx had run faster - in her 2018 Chipping Norton, for instance, after an early pace of 24.87 and 48.83, she ran 23.14 for the final two furlongs. In 2017 and 2018, Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Roy H came home in times of 12.05 and 12.43, and 2017 BC Turf Sprint winner Stormy Liberal in a time of 11.55 for the final furlong. Australian superstar sprinter Chautauqua’s best final furlong time in 2016 was 11.5. Winx’s average final-furlong time in seven-furlong races of 11.1 is faster than all their times, and she has run up to a half-second faster (10.6) than her average - in the 2018 Turnbull Stakes Says it all.

@@elgransenor1472 so did she need to race overseas to find these worthy contenders in your less than humble opinion? Pretty sure many champion racehorses never ventured outside their zone. Our first champion Phar Lap went to USA and flogged the best they had, then got poisoned. Zenyatta never came to win a Doncaster or Cox Plate, still my favourite American horse. Winx beat up on multiple group one winners, hard to have any rivalry when you win 33 straight, most of the time without full force. And still records times that are the quickest in history.
not many people realise that she was rarely ever pushed to her edge. Bowman never had to whip her hard or belt her neck down the line. She made it too easy.
@@graemealexander8804 Different horses.. Can't take away how good wind was. Larger fields at her distance can come heavily down to barrier draws and track conditions.

Such an amazing horse. Just imagine seeing her up against the very best... No offence to Hartnell and Happy Clapper, but it was obvious quite early on in her career that she was far superior to her competition. She deserved the chance to compete outside Australia.
Why go to be subjected to 7000 miles trip to Japan or 10000 miles to England? Let them come here If as you reckon they are better horses come here. Money is good Climate great
@@jacktattisexactly, Australian prize money is up with the highest in the world, an international horse has to be exceptional to come here and beat us, I’m around the racing industry and have had friends go to work in top stables overseas and it is well known Australian horses are tough to beat and that is why we don’t get a whole lot of international raiders here. The horses here that winx beat by up to 8 lengths were certainly not average, without winx no one is coming here and piping all the big prize money races are they ?
Do you suppose that when Happy Clappy and Hartnell saw her at the starting gate they thought "Oh crap, we are going to lose again"? Loved watching her race!
Most watched video. I grew up in the 1980's; a Phar Lap fan, and I never thought I'd see anything like him. It always seemed so crazy that you'd worry about her losing; absurd to think she could be capable of defeat. I started going out to TAB's to watch her live, the vibe was electric. My favourite memory was sitting in there, after she'd again made mincemeat of her rivals, and someone loudly proclaimed "how good was that!" I turned around and it was the TAB chick sitting with us, because operations had ceased for the race.
You sort of have. Phar Lap won from 1400 metrea to 3200 metres, with up to 15 horses in a race, not 7. Still equal 1st with 27 Groups 1 wins. A world race win in 1932, dirt track record whilst injured with a bleeding split hoof. A 1930 Melbourne Cup win carrying 62.5kgs. 1931 led into the straight, finished 8th, carrying the heaviest weight ever, 68kgs. No other horse has attempted it. Winner, White Nose carried just 43.50kgs. Be like Winx carrying 76-78.5kgs in a sprint. Both champions, but Phar Lap ran longer distances, carried monumental weights, was shot at, held back in races & achieved more in his 5 1/2 years, with his peak still ahead of him & unfulfilled. He won 37/41 at his peak. 2x 2nds, a nose & a half neck returning from injury, a 3rd & unplaced when weighted out of the 1931 Melbourne Cup. He was a tier above.
@@graemealexander8804 take nothing away from Winx, but you couldn't have said it better. A lot of these horses are limited in some way or another, even at the highest level. Phar Lap was not limited in any way in terms of distance or frequency of racing. A horse like that is rarely seen.
@@graemealexander8804 you can't compare across eras like that. Phar Lap set records that would never even be attempted in the modern era. I honestly believe that, if we had footage of the 1928 AJC Plate there would little argument about the GOAT. But those things, as a measure, are not fair on horses racing today.
@@bgardiner3354 Correct. It is somewhat like comparing elite sprinters in athletics. The difference in "science" in tracks alone makes it a no brainer...cinders versus whiz bang synthetics. I think Hugh Bowman said it best: "Really great race horses can sustain their best closing run for 200-300 meters." Bowman said "Winx could sustain her run for 600-700 meters if necessary." The first race in this video shows this type of run from dead last. This is basic math and riding skills... for a superb specimen. In her 17th Group I victory, she sustained her run for 400 meters. In her 2nd Queen Elizabeth, she did this again. In her 26th straight victory at Randwick, she did it again (400 meters). In every one of her victories, her sustained closing run was at least 260-300 meters. Winning 33 straight times is... just ridiculous.
Bowman knows exactly how to handle winx, all credit to him and of course the very special winx... absolute legends the pair of them...go Bowman go winx...#fjb
I've watched many horse races since 1997. Let's not compare dirt vs turf. I"m from the US. I prefer dirt. But my gawwwwwd.... Winx is the BEST turf horse of all time, and in the conversation of the best horse of all time. Trying to pick just 1 ...too tough. She is at or near the top regardless of surface, and there are PLENTY of reasons to say why she stands alone at the top. I've only recently started researching her and her races. She's done things that Secretariat, Spectacular Bid, Flightline, Affirmed, Cigar, etc have never done.
They should've went for the Melb Cup with her early days. Would've been one of the most popular wins ever. Would've got weighted out obviously later on. Best horse I've seen by a long way
The best there will ever be , if Waller set her for an Everest shed win that, Phar Lap got the country thru the great depression the Diva won 3 Cups in a row but this girl will be the best we ever see in history. In 100 yrs time no horse will have equaled what she has done nor got close. To win 4 Cox Plates is not hesrd of and if he she had raced another season it would have been 5. She didnt need to travel, only 3 horses would have lined up against her. She is the greatest the World will ever see.
Say What You Want About Winx But Her"33" Straight Wins is a Feat Never to be Duplicated Again...33 Straight Wins is Mind Boggling Regardless of The Competition
Imagine if it was possible to see Kingston Town at his peak and Winx race against eachother over 2000m? That would have been one really good race. Or even if they were the same age and could have raced eachother often, would have been very good to watch. I reckon they both would have beat eachother at different times.
Frankel was a class apart, but Regardless of all those that "doubt",....the irrefutable fact is that Australia is a HUGE horse racing country and for this once in a lifetime horse to achieve all those wins,in big,big races, secures the legend for all time. Way to go winx.
It only looks like that since I only showed the last quarter of a mile of the race. She was a thoroughbred. Quarter Horses I don’t believe race on grass either.
I do not much about hoses but what surprised me was the easy way to Win , Too much Horse , not matter what people says about the competition but to win 33 Straight. Races is. Out of this World , much respect. For Winx
Here in America most races run with 6 to 8 horses only. In Australia Winx beat million horses every race. Never ever such a successful horse will come to earth. Write it down. Never ever. Love you Great Winx

Winx’s average final-furlong time in seven-furlong races of 11.1 is faster than all their times, and she has run up to a half-second faster (10.6) than her average - in the 2018 Turnbull Stakes
Says it all.

Small fields, big gaps. Phar Lap raced up to 15 horses.

Would have been very interesting to see winx and happer Clapper level weights in a big Randwick mile under hcp conditions
So glad we got to see Winx and black cavier
We are regularly seeing similar applied to turf horse tracks with sub terranian structures as per many elite football fields.
