The build up to the '86 cox plate was like no other. The race itself surpassed all the hype and bill collins epic call ensured it will always be remembered as one of australias greatest racing moments.
No doubt for me the greatest race of all time and a great era for kiwi horse!!! Not only Bonecrusher and Our Waverley star but....... Sunline, Horlicks, Kiwi, Empire Rose and Mr McGinty!!!! Rest in Peace Big Fella...you gave me sporting memories that will stay with me until i die!!!
bone crusher one of the strongest race houses that you will ever see. but kingston town must go down as a champion. Kingston with 3 MS cox plates under his belt and 2nd in the Melbourne cup, he carried the in weight the grandstand that day, with idiot jockey that got into Kingston town too early in the straight cost him the race. Bone crusher A Champion horse and holds sound nice memories.
You think they were great, which is true and therefore correct. None of them would have been in the same race had Dulcify been around. He won a W S Cox Plate by 7 lengths on a track that didn't suit the big fellow. He's still the best I've seen in the last 45 years. 😁😂👍🍺
My favourite horse of them all I was a little kid and can still remember watching this race live with my whole family nana granddad everyone. He crossed over into the mainstream consciousness of all Kiwis like no other horse has been able to do sunline came close to it but not quite. RIP big red “The Pride Of Ellerslie” the pride of all kiwis a hero for an entire generation of us.
I was lucky enough to be standing next to the fence 100 from the winning post, I have been to plenty of Cox Plates but that is by far the most exciting. The hair on the back of my neck still bristles every time I watch it. The noise of the crowd was unbelievable.
Bill said "Our Waverley Star will need to be Pharlap" @ about the 800m. The hair still stands up on my back watching these 2 greats fight out a magnificent finish. Truly legendary !! The crowd is electric as well.
Had to laugh at Bill he said NZ owned or bred horses filled the first five places Bill says they might as well have some of these races in NZ. !t would save them taking the cup back!! Greatest race caller of all time and always will be. RIP Bill, us punters really miss you mate!
“Have they gone too early?” Bonecrusher an absolute champion but what an effort Our Waverley Star to sit three wide the whole race. Best Cox Plate finish ever.
the best race call of all time in my view. the best race of all time in my view. Our Waverley Star would have won for sure if the jockey had more patience and didn't race wide for more of the race than Bonecrusher.
you can only just hear it on this video but as they hit the line, Bill Collins thumps the desk or something in front of him. I remember on the day it was loud and clear - an electric race!
Bonecrusher is the clear winner he had to run longer being on the outside of Our Waverley Star. I'll never forget Bonecrusher my fave horse of all times.
The most fantastic horse race I have ever seen. To see "Big Red" who not only looked like Phar Lap but shared the same nick name win like that was an incredible once in a lifetime experience for me. But analytically had Our Waverley Star got a decent run in transit things may have turned out differently., but thank goodness it didn't, because I was on ......."B o n e c r u s h e r" !!!
There is an alternate audio only commentary (maybe Keith Haub) out there that is even better. It used to be the lead in for Des Coppin's handicapping show on a Friday night down inn EnZed. God I wish I could find it again.
One of my most memorable Haub calls is Kotare Chief's Auckland Cup win when he said the horse could lie down and have a rest due to being so far in front.
@@m.l.b.2908 Yeah the guy was a legend. Always enjoyed Alan Bright as well. He always used to say hello to us on the air when me and my bogan mates with boxes of Lion Red would be standing at edge of the birdcage at Trentham.
Saw them live at Wanganui NZ 1986 with my dad. The filbert was third or Bourbon boy? records will tell. At that time my teacher was complaining about feeding costs for his horse, Veandocross, another great.
In my time, no other horse has captured the NZ public more than the Big Red.I was a big fan of Cardigan Bay - but lack of TV coverage and his early departure for the US made him less of an idol, than say - Delightful Lady...who was really the idol of Alexandra Park. Sunline was a champ, but not endeared to the kiwi public as much, because most of her big wins were across the ditch. But to contradict myself, Rough Habit was a champ that we took to heart - not just because he was a champ, but his plain looks and big heart and probably having the `Pumper' on him made him our champ - those Stradbroke victories are ridiculous. Sadly, we don't have a champ that we can take to heart nowadays - I'm not sure that there's budding champ out there.....be nice to have that sort of passion for a horse again.
Both great horses. A pity one of the great races ever, has to be run on one of the most ordinary tracks for thoroughbreds. A race like that should be run at Flemington. 😃
@@mjames4709 the main reason is that a track where major races are run, should give the runners a chance like Flemington which is the best metropolitan track in Victoria. Otherwise it could be at Sandown. Both good turf tracks.

Bonecrusher passed away today but will forever be remembered for this race.
+Shane O'Rourke Enjoyed this race and a great advert for racing.
He was a hero for New Zealand horse race followers
Brought a tear to my eye. Thanks for the memories Bonecrusher. Did us proud.
Still my favourite race of all. I get goosebumps every time. Thanks for the memories. RIP Champs
Sent this to my nephew yesty , was telling me about champions , couldn't resist sending it with the caption " real champions" . Cheers 👌
What a champ, that replay gives me chills like watching a live race now!!
The only problem with this race is that someone had to come second. What a magnificent race

Wow what a race!!!! I remember watching this as a kid on the tele with the old man, Grandfather and Uncles all riding Bonecrusher home.
Still gives me shivers listening to this brilliant call! Two great horses and a brilliant commentator- unforgettable.
"Bonecrusher responds to the whip...the roar of the crowd..." - wow what a call
What a call that goes down in history
British racing commentator Richard Hoiles wrote that Bill Collins' call was years ahead of its time.

I always loved horse racing and loved Bonecrusher. What a horse! And he was a stock horse in his spare time…
Audio and video quality is very good. The race was simply exciting and a brilliant call by Bill Collins.
I’m not into the races but always followed these great horses and will always remember watching this race the best EVER. Miss the Big Red ❤️
The sister of Gary Stewart, the rider of Bonecrusher was telling me they named a meat pie after Bonecrusher in New Zealand.
A great race.
Thanks Big Red best race ever...be happy in the big paddock in the sky.
