"Crystal" is a song by the English rock band New Order. It is one of the band's fastest and most guitar-orientated singles.
Lyrics
We're like crystal
(Hey)
We break easy
(Hoo)
I'm a poor man
(Hey)
If you leave me
(Hoo)
I'm applauded
(Hey)
Then forgotten
It was summer
(Hey)
Now it's autumn
(Hoo)
I don't know what to say
You don't care anyway
I'm a man in a rage
With a girl I betrayed
Here comes love
It's like honey
You can't buy it with money
You shook me to the core
You shook me to the core
We're like crystal
(Hey)
It's not easy
(Hoo)
With your love
(Hey)
You could feed me
(Hoo)
Every man
(Hey)
And every woman
(Hoo)
Needs someone
(Hey)
So keep it coming
Keep it coming
Keep it coming
Keep it coming
Keep it coming
Keep it coming
I don't know what to say
You don't care anyway
I'm a man in a rage
With a girl I betrayed
Here comes love
It's like honey
You can't buy it with money
You're not alone anymore
You shook me to the core
You shook me to the core
I don't know what to say
You don't care anyway
I'm a man in a rage
With a girl I betrayed
Here comes love
It's like honey
You can't buy it with money
You're not alone anymore
You shook me to the core
You shook me to the core
You shook me to the core
You shook me to the core
Keep it coming
Keep it coming
Keep it coming
Keep it coming
Keep it coming

2024 and this tune still hasn't aged a day
Can't say the same about the hit coming home at 4am with the girl I betrayed.
Could've been released yesterday in regard to how fresh it still sounds 👌🏻
probably one of the most underated tracks of the 21st century
totally agree with this
its not, everywhere i go i spread the word that this is one of the best somgs ever written. i REALLY freaking love it till today!
Anne Jerratsch The same exact thought brought me to this video today
By WHOM? I rate it super high ;-)
Björn Mayer Underrated as in not as popular of a song as it should be (i.e. True Faith, Bizarre Love Triangle) . I agree with you. It's one of New Order's best songs ever written.
To say New Order has not been anything but iconic for 40 years is an understatement
and joy divison
So true. I've been following them since 1980, when they were still Joy Division. One of the most influential bands ever, especially during the early 80s, but also later, like they did with Crystal, mainstreaming their sound and the whole genre to a broader audience, although they really never got the credit they deserved for it.
would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Ian Curtis was still alive. They were moving toward the electronic stuff right before he died. Would have been interesting, but maybe neither band would have been iconic if he survived his fate. Deep thoughts going on here hehehehehe
this song came out in 2001 and looks like it was recorded last week.
Unbeliveble!!!
I'm not a huge New Order fan, but this hit the spot the very first time I heard it and it still does. That performance they did on Jools Holland was fantastic as well. I also loved that "Get The Message" track, by Sumner and Marr in their band Electronic.
I feel the same about Transmission from 1979.
It's way too good to have come out last week, when the world is hanging on every lousy Taylor Swift or Beonce album.
That only means one thing, we are getting old 😮
I heard it for the first time in 2020 on the radio and thought it had just been released.
My dad's favourite band were New Order. He got me into them. Love you, Dad. Rest easy.
Did he like Joy Division?
An amazing song, sorry for ur loss
@@cherylthommo1 he did but would say depressing lol
@@stacywragg8927 true. Ty
New Order is a great band! Surely your dad was a great person!
As an 1980s New Order fan, this brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it.
it was that good?
i and several friends were in that same boat. They were afraid New Order would have spoiled when this album first came out. As the gopher willing to chance it I just took a blind chance and got the CD, they were skeptical of my glowing review and I said "no really, just listen." It isnt just this song. There are more good tracks throughout
It's just perfect innit?
I don't know. Early New Order hasn't got too much in common with this polished pop rock style. Ironically, this was a prototype for the Killers!
@@secretsymphony I will equally listen to Bizarre love triangle with the same verve .This was just what we needed at a time when a lot of stuff was just floating on the surface occasionally drifting to the shore...This definitely hit home for me but I get your point totally.
This album revived the indie scene and took it in a new direction that lead to bands like the Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, The Killers (of course, this figuratively birthed them) and the plethora of other early 00's alternative rock bands. It deserves far more credit than it got. Just as they influenced an entire era of synth rock and dnace back in the 80's and early 90's.
Yeah you know
Indeed
Just a pity Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, The Killers were all a bit rubbish
They still had alternative rock after 2000?
I thought The Strokes' Is This It revived the indie scene to the masses in 2001. I could be wrong tho.
This song hasn't aged on bit. Even the music video looks just as good.
@Patrick Whelpley Fresh really doesn't matter if it's good. I guess we found something that is actually good.
2024 checking in - AGREED!
2024 !
Very, Very strong track. The intro is spectacular, and then when the keyboardist hits that single note, we're catapulted into the stratosphere....One of the best songs ever...
❤❤❤
This is not the real intro. Listen to the album version, they cut the actual beautiful intro. It builds up with a female voice ad-libbing over a bed of atmospheric synths then the drums enter when the female singer hits the high note. It's even more cooler when they unleash the guitars and the bass after that prelude.
You mean The Killers😉
@@deadstar44 You're dead right. I couldn't work out what this was missing until I went back and grabbed my CD!
It’s crazy when looking back, this song is the song that gave birth to my favourite band, “The Killers”. It’s written right there… on the drums!! Words can’t describe how grateful I am for New Order, this song and the band are fantastic. But them inspiring The Killers, will always be what I’m most thankful for!
What a great song, I love it! I put it into my "Shellshocked Radio - Recommendations" List: ua-cam.com/video/AxzgoGhou2U/v-deo.html Very well done!
Yes but dud the killers give monetary credit for the copyright of the name ?
Indeed, but I remember in 2001 (when I was 29 year-old long term New Order fan) having no idea that this was a New Order song. I thought it was just another revival clone (there was a lot of that kind of shit around then).
When I eventually figured out that this album was New Order, I'm afraid that whatever it somehow inspired ("The Killers"?) was always going to be weak version of the original joke.
@@burberryclaretred6676 why the fuck do you automatically assume New Order would've gone out of their way to copyright a fictional name that jokingly appears in one fucking music video?
The Killers are shite
When this video came out I remember so many indie rock kids being duped into thinking that they discovered some new young band called New Order.
oh, how painfully true
👍🏻👍🏿👍👍🏿👍🏻👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏻👍🏻
Haha, I'm an old guy and the first time I saw this video I actually thought this was the real band members, I remember thinking "OMG they're really young!"
I tought that boy has a deep voice xD
I was 17 in 2001 and 100% convinced that the people in the video were actually New Order.
Johan Renck, the man responsible for directing this video, went on to direct all 5 episodes of the critically acclaimed series "Chernobyl". Just found out today, and it's fuckin' amazing.
Add Bowie's 'Blackstar' to the list
Renck also had a successful music career himself as well with hits like Here We Go Again, Softroom and We Vie under the name "Stakka Bo" (his full name is Bo Johan Renck).
ua-cam.com/video/4nB5jtZlCmY/v-deo.html
He directed Krafty as well. And the “Pass This On” 2003 music video for The Knife - it is still superb, way ahead of its time, before everybody got PC and offended at everything gender-wise. Even Madonna’s “Hung Up” music video is one of his creations. A Swedish legend!
This music video is why Brandon Flowers named his band “The Killers”!
Yep, and also the video for Somebody Told Me looks like this.
Sim
Listen to the first 10 seconds of this and then go listen to the first ten seconds of "Change Your Mind".
Yeah, that's the reason, and they have played this song together many times. 'Hot Fuss' you can say that it is almost a tribute to New Order
Yes
23 yrs old and still sounds as fresh as the day it came out. Hooky thank you for the awesome bass guitar on this
Those kids are 40 now
@@sharksport01 ...and the real band (not the actors in this clip) are well past that, mid to late 60's.
2022 and still get a chill and crying just a bit. Loved them ever since Joy Division. Fcuking great. Rock on!😁❤
it's a timeless classic, ofcourse ppl will be listening to this song for millenia. could we please stop with the 12 y.o. who listens to this banger in (add year) ffs.
@@giottomkd I'm 59 in 2 weeks, I saw New Order 82 in Stockholm so stop crying bitch.

"Here comes love / It's like honey / You can't buy / it with money"
The evoking lyrics of this song perfectly capture what was like living during the Great Honey Ban of 1975-2005
What the hell is the great honey ban?
Agreed. The lyrical genius of this guy.
Yeah, you know, the great honey ban? I heard folk were smuggling it in hidden in old camcorders and slippers lined with plastic wrap. Man, that sure was some tough times for honey lovers...
Personally I don't like honey, but I had friends who really suffered. A couple even ended up with criminal records after being caught with some.
I remember smuggling my honey in from Mexico thru stretch arm strong toys and those stress reliever balls. We used black cars with green neon lights underneath, and thus this story was in part, the basis for the first fast and furious movie. We had to out run the cops somehow.
New Order will forever be my all time favorite band. Their influence can be heard in countless bands right now.
Tune
Thought I was listening to Dirty Vegas. Love both bands.
that is for sure, even when they were Joy Division in 1979 they started changing music and they were always ahead of the rest for so many years. This band is really special.
In the case of The Killers: Literally
Since 1994 I got to know them with Regret I became their fan and they my favourite band above all.
An old friend I hadn't seen in years came to my house, knocked on the door and gave me a CD and said "They're back and they sound the same!" So glad he was completely right.
One of the few old bands that their new stuff isn't exactly the same, but it's still really good on some new level.
Like 15 years ago I was guest in France in a private house for student exchange, I saw the CD with New Order written on it, the guy played it for me and this song started. He saw how happy and enthusiastic I was, despite he saw me for the first time in his life he just told me : Take the CD it's yours :)
This song is from 2001 but it seems so current. New Order never grows old !!!! ♥ ️ ♥ ️ ♥ ️
This song never gets old. Loved it back then and still love it 23 years later ❤
Peter Hook and that bass of his. My God. Talk about iconic sounds...
Who is the lead singer on this song?
@@grubbybum3614 Bernard, as usual. If you mean who the kids are in the video, I don't know.
@@RegebroRepairs yeah I got confused by the video. Thought it was that young guy lol
The Hook riffs are my favourite thing about this song! Can't understand why there are so many thumbs down.
Hook's bass has ruined me for other bands.
Love how this song sounds super contemporary for the time but undeniably invokes their Joy Division as well
You're so right.
Shadowplay
Everything is about the bass.
The song is timeless. Still listening to it in 2023 after buying the album in 2001.

What an expression !!! The best ever.
Then their tract Singularity begins,
Winter came so soon
And summer never happened

And down the rabbit hole you go !
I relate to this so much. I heard this song years ago and instantly fell in love, but no one else knows this song exists.

Almost 2018 and still the best song I've ever heard!
Maxim Delaet I can agree to that
me too
Maxim Delaet I'm sorry, I love the song but I just can't agree to that.. I don't even think the singer himself could say that
Word..!
Hevent heard it in a long time and it still punches me with joy.
Still one of my favorite songs and still listening in 2022.
TeMazo!!!.
el tema mas Rockero de New order?
en vivo me voló la cabeza loco!.
una locura fue!.
encima, después se separaron! .
So I'm nearly 60 ... and I've heard a looooot of music! Always loved NO and yet I'd never heard this until 2 months ago? Hooooow!!!! A perfect song and perfect visuals. Now I wake up to it every day. Best played loud.
Album is over twenty years old and I still think of it as one of New Order's new songs, cause I'm stuck in the 80s with songs in the True Faith or JD years. You'll also like 60 Miles an Hour
One of the best New Order songs! Timeless! Still in love with this song since 2001. Now i´m 39. :)
Try Electronic or Monaco a bit of both New Order greatest parts but no together 😊

Rocks as hard as anything they ever did. Hooky’s bass is just immense.

Most of 90s alternative rock bands still pay tribute to them, and they should! When this band was Joy Division they truly paved the way for future alt. Rock groups.
If you remember this Masterpiece song you are not old you are high quality vintage. 💞👌😊👍
80,s the only and best decade in music
What were the 80s without the 60s? This song came out 2001!

Being a fan of Joy Division and New Order brought me here. I remember pre-ordering the CD. I still have it!

DEFINITELY ONE OF NEW ORDER'S BEST SONGS EVER ... !!!
How many bands can come up with a totally brilliant record, as good as any they have ever done, 20 years after they first started? ANSWER: Only one - New Order.
King Crimson? Sonic Youth?
David Bowie could, and did.

Here!
I'm from the future, I'm hitting this track up in 2025 right now. I will be back in 2027 to see all the people that are asking if anyone is listening that future month. People really need to find something new to say about old music than who is listening right this second?

I still can't wrap my head around how, when played live, there's two guitarists/guitars playing this one. Like... there's just the single riff.
I haven't heard this song since I was in my early teens. I hadn't realised how much I missed it until now, when I was reminded of it by a Polyphonic documentary on The Killers. I'm having a big nostalgia wave right now.
One of, if not the most, influential music videos in the history of modern music...
It's insane how amazing New Order are. I was a teen when they made me happy for the first time. Now, In my 50's they are still my musical Prozac every time I feel down.

The word "Killers" on the drums is what inspired the band name for The Killers!
It's clear like crystal that this song is amazing and beyond.

The band members are pretty well preserved. They still look pretty young for being an 80s band. Maybe made a Faustian pact?
Love the guy dancing in the video, he rakes some awesome moves. Love this track, keep it coming.
Incredible song I didn't get tired of listening to it.
It's October 2021 and I'm still thinking about this fantastic song and video 20 years later.
those proto-hipsters they filmed for this video were ahead of their time! remember, this was the time when blink-182 and limp bizkit were the biggest rock bands in the world, with all the baggy fashions and aesthetics
This band had so much talent that they continued to produce exceptional quality as they disintegrated.
When you think indie pop/rock is a cool “new thing” these guys were playing this in 2001, after being in the electronic music band in the 80’s. Just genius.

perfect pop song with all the classic hallmarks of New Order at their best.
Looking back this song still sounds fresh 10 years later. Love the Hooky Joe Division bass line and tone, especially when he gets high up on the neck. This song is a masterpiece!
It's 20 years, not 10. The album was released in 2001.
Very eerie that the young singer dances like New Orders original singer Ian Curtis, its like watching Joy Division( new orders first group ) in what they would have looked like in their youth of the time this vid came out! Even the guy on the side with the guitar ( white tshirt ) is like watching barney if he was a youth of todays times, even the lyrics to this song are very similar to Ian Curtis life story! Even the blonde lady looks similar to Ians mistress Aneke who the band were very familiar with.
