Recently bought a LM Arc and have been carrying it everyday at work. At first I was hesitant because it was so expensive but once I started using it I realized it is an amazing tool and working great if you use it. Saved me from having to walk to the truck for my tool bag
Serrated for heavy rope and those tough plastic straps on lumber and some shipping crates/parts. It’s a must. And it slices cardboard fast if you just chopping it up.
Arc owners because the Arc's wire cutters break on wire that even Gerber's pathetic carbide cutters have zero issues with. I've broken 3 sets of cutters on my Arc Obsidian and 2 sets on my original Arc
I hate to say it, but I think I prefer the tools on the inside. Little less accessible, but probably a lot less likely to pick up dirt and lint in my pockets. Thanks for the comparison!
Yeah, I don't understand the one handed advertising o the Free series. My Surge opens with incredible ease and I can close it one-handed too. Slightly less floppy I guess but still super easy.
The Wave has the advantage of plain edge and serrated blades but the Arc Magnacut blade is far higher quality steel. Single handed opening is a mixed blessing, the Arc will bite like a Jack Russell puppy if you hold it the wrong way. The biggest elephant in the room is that the Arc is made in the USA from USA sourced bits while the other models are mostly made from Chinese parts assembled in the USA. So that explains the hugely inflated price. If you just want the tools, go for the Wave. If you want easy access and smooth tool deployment then the Arc is better. The Magnacut blade should last several times as long between sharpening sessions compared to the standard steel blades, so better for frequent use. Of course the Victorinox Spirit beats both models for comfort and price! I have them all, so I can draw that conclusion with confidence.
I use the serrated blade more than the knife blade (cutting hoses etc.) for the money, the Wave+ is a great everyday work tool. $220.00 is a lot for a working man.
Nice comparison. Would you happen to have a pair of calipers? I'm curious in thickness differences between these 2 multitools in the knife, pry bar and the small bit driver.
I think Wave is still better for those of us who carry a pocket knife too because we don't use Leatherman knife anyway. Considering the price of the Arc, honestly I'd rather keep my Wave and simply buy another folder knife in MagnaCut. And one-hand ergonomics is really just a gimmick for us regular folks. The only people I can possibly see having genuine use of it is people with disabilities, specifically those who lost use of one of their hands or who lost one hand entirely.
One handed use is handy in lots of situations… say you’re holding something in place with one hand and need a little plier assist with the other… or you want to unclog the line trimmer without setting it down… or you’re up a ladder. It comes up a lot, especially when you’re trying to move things along quickly.
@@FreedomFox1 Fair point but I still don't find it crucial for such use. It's better to simply be more logistical in your approach whatever you're doing. Example, if something needs twisting then prepare the pliers and then proceed with the work and so on. Also if you're on a ladder you can still use both hands unless you're hanging off of it horizontally like Stalone in the beginning of Cliffhanger. 😂
Wave+ smokes the Arc in every way. I've had two Arcs. Major frame flex, blade doesn't take or hold an edge, wire cutters break on wire that even Gerber cuts easily, bottle opener doesn't work, and the scissors are obscenely dull. Leatherman's most expensive tool is also by far their worst
After much looking other multitools companies dint have what I look for or have bad quality leathermen seems to be the best all rounder arc is not worth the price maybe of they included more in it
I use my wave scissor for noise hairs lol. Then I use my surge for other tasks and I have my Charge Tti Plus for vacations. I own 4 other leathermans. Crunch Cheers
Okay if someone who actually uses it every day the ARC is way better. And what kinda person except a novice uses scissors to cut wire? I also can use the knife as my edc. If you actually use the ARC like a real tool and not just carry it around you will see far superior. You're comparing two different tools. I have carried a wave plus for years and used it at work everyday almost. The ARC IS a way Superior tool for someone uses it like a tool
Do you do any grinding or metal work ? I use a wave plus every day and I think it’s great. I think the Arc would get full of metal shavings and be horrible to deal with.
The ARC is nicer. But I can get (2) Waves for the cost of one. Or one Wave and a bunch of accessories. Since Leatherman will fix or replace a Wave if it gets damaged I rather stick with a Wave working with it every day. Its more likely to get lost or stolen realistically for what one would use a multi tool for.
I was a wave guy, then the p4 came out a blew it out of the water as far as functionality and durability. the p4 lacks the removable screw driver bits and the micro screwdriver and the full size file. This looks like the best of both worlds. Anyone who actually puts these to the test knows they’re worth every penny.
I have to disagree. The P4 has a short file (too short) and the screwdriver is not interchangeable which is a huge thing for me since I carry the ratchet accessory with the set of allen bits which I use quite often.
Dude is almost intentionally not showing the best part of the arc. It can be used completely one handed. He doesn’t want to open the blade one handed? I can swing the pliers into position with one hand let alone the blade. All the other tools come out so easy and you can flip out what you want and lock everything into and out of place with one hand. Also no mention of how amazing to have a leatherman with magnacut blade steel. That makes the price difference in itself.
Not worth it! Could almost buy 2 wave + for the price of the arc...there's just no significant benefit on the arc. Maybe stronger plier head but then again wave+ has my favorite serrated blade.......
I have 2 wave+ because I had to send mine in for a broken plier tip and could not be without one. I wanted a reason to buy the ARC but I'm not seeing it.
I love Leatherman. But the arc is a big flop. Not worth the $240 price tag. For the everyday blue collar worker It does not make sense. The arc is for desk jockeys who want to have an expensive tool and a nicer blade. If you are in the field depending what you do , the surge and wave + are and will continue to be the best option. The free series is a gimmick. I also saw someone here say that the magnets attract metal shards 🤯 I haven’t even thought about that. Guys save your money. Leatherman has to go back to the drawing board with this one.

Doesn't look like it makes sense to replace wave+ with ARC. Especially considering price.
Magnacut tho
@@ArrowVelocity
Nobody who carries a pocket knife uses Leatherman knife tho.
I agree but I still did buy one 😅
Oh it makes sense. The outside access to all the tools is worth it. The arc has what the p4 lacks. I think leatherman nailed it
@@kylewinter1137 if there are specific needs then for sure I can't agree more with you
missing a serrated blade is a big deal to me, thanks for the review
If you find a p4 one you can switch it in!
Agree
I've heard the magnacut blade can cut through wood + metal like butter
The only time I use a serrated blade is to slice bread.

Theo, thanks for the comparison. I hope you're enjoying the ARC as much as I am
its slowing becoming my edc
Would feel sorry to use the expensive ARC, so I’ll stick with the workhorse Wave+ rather.
Thus said - Any Leatherman still rocks! 🙌🏼

I can open my Wave, Surge, Crunch and Charge one handed opening easy. Magnets attrack metal shards in any of the trades. Thanks for the review.
The only one missing there is a Grunge. 😂
Great point there. I would hate to have to constantly clean metal filing off the tool.
Yeah, I don't understand the one handed advertising o the Free series. My Surge opens with incredible ease and I can close it one-handed too. Slightly less floppy I guess but still super easy.
So you can open it, take out the tool you want and close it with one hand without fuss? Doubtful
@xXlURMOMlXx yes, but it does take practice
The fact that they didn't include the adjustable pivot on pliers is beyond me.. 🤦♂
Yeah… not really sure why they wouldn’t just include it.
To make room for the adjustment mechanism they have to mill out more material, thus making the pivot weaker.
yea people would get it to loose and lose parts I'm sure
Arc knife blade can absolutely flip closed. 👍
And for the love of God, use the wire cutters for cutting wires lol
Good review, . I prefer the surge ❤

I’ve heard the arcs handles feel slippery not sure though

No pocket clip for the wave + 😅
Dude I'd be scared to use the arc. Hell I hardly want to damage my orange charge.
Can you open the main blade with your left hand?
I think with practice you should be able to but it you would hold the tool facing down almost
One of my biggest gripes holding me back from purchasing. No love for left handers 😭

Do the magnet’s loose strength over time?
Not sure, i don't think they will

I fkn hate it. which ones won't do that?
The Free series and Ark.
@phil4203 thank you
There are plenty of lightly used Waves on eBay for $50-75. I can’t justify paying 3-4 times more for a tool that doesn’t have that many new features
Can you strike a ferro rod with the awl or spine of the saw to start a fire?
