I’m sure the Arc is nice. But I’m not going to replace my Surge in favour of the Arc. In fact, I don’t see a reason to replace my P4 or SwissTool with an Arc either. I like the diamond file. I wish the P4 had a diamond file. It works a lot better on fingernails. But I have no use for the microbit driver. I’ve never used the one on my TTI. And while a MagnaCut blade is nice, I think it’s overkill. I generally have a full size knife on me and use that for cutting tasks. And at $229, it’s a pass. What I have already in rotation works just fine.

I just upgraded to a surge from my wave + and charge tti. I was never planning on getting a surge, but I found a slightly used one at a pawn shop for $15 and had to get it. It has been a fantastic tool for my job in a parts department in a transit company. It does everything I need and the similar design to the wave makes it comfortable and sturdy tool to use. It is my main work tool now. I don't even use box cutters anymore. I will say I only use it for my work and I use my wave+ or charge tti as my edc options outside of work. I have no interest in the arc or p4 platform as a whole. The surge is a perfect tool for my uses.

I love all my Leatherman’s, but the Surge is still the leader amongst serious users. If I’m not mistaken, the Surge is the only one that has those oversized de-burring shoulders on the plier head. They’ve come in handy more than once. The ARC gives a new style awl-type tool that looks like it’s more for reaming and de-burring… but as nice as that new ARC is… I think the Surge will still reign. There are those of us that have to have them all, but that’s just because. 😊

Surge is still the beefiest. The pliers on the Free Series is the strongest plier head Leatherman has ever produced for a Medium duty multi-tool. The ST300, MUT, and SURGE have Heavy Duty plier heads and are without a doubt still the stongest pliers Leatherman produces. The Wave falls into the fullsize medium duty category too but it's pliers are visibly weaker than the Free and the Surge. The rebar and Signal are just using a sized down version of the heavy duty plier head. So in terms of strength. In order of weakest to strongest it's Wave +, Rebar & Signal, Free series& Arc, and finally Surge. The magnetic shaving problem is purely urban myth. There is no substance to that speculation. It's been debunked and my own personal experience with my P2, P4, K2, and T2 confirm metal shavings are no problem.

If you look at the width of steel around the pivot, you'll realize the Arc and even the Free series is tougher.
Tools break due to mechanical stress in their weakest point thanks to stress risers, and the non-free series thend to have thinner steel around the pivot.
So the Surge could in theory break with less stress and it would do so arond the pivot.
Of course, both are really beefy and it would be almost impossible to break them via hand strength.

Have an original Surge and it is very robust. The Wave and this ARC are more of an EDC than a TOOL. Would still buy an ARC for EDC but more serious it is the Surge hands down
You need to be able to remove that file for sharpening your knife for non knife sharpening guys. Personally use a strop.
Edited my comment which had made from halfway through your video and delighted now and as you said literally the same thing about EDC ARC verses Surge Tool.
    Good Job!!!!!

At Christmas 2023 I purchased the Surge over the Arc cuz the Surge was on sale making it almost half the price of the Arc. Four months later I know I made the right decision though I feel the quality of these tools has diminished. I wonder if the new magnetic architecture has looser tolerances that hide the precision problems that are now noticeable in the non magnetic models such as the Surge. Still a great tool but will look at what else is available in the future. Magnets are a deal breaker for me.

I recently picked up the Free K4 on sale to investigate the magnetic architecture. I had to take it apart to clean out some grit and after oil and reassembly it was better but still stiff. I covered the magnet with 3 layers of scotch tape and this made the action better but needless to say I am less than impressed. Glad I did not spend the money on the Arc. You can make these tools work but should you have to make them work.

I'll stick with my Surge and my Wave. The design of the Wave and the Surge is a design that allows you to torque, which allows you to apply force with the screwdrivers when the multitool is closed and the multitool does not open. With the free design it tends to be open. The design of the surge has a rounded finish which gives you comfort in your hand and I can work longer with the multitool. I think the design of the free still has a lot to improve. They have to make it more comfortable in hand. It's not just that you can operate it with one hand, that it has the tools that everyone asks for, it's that it also has comfort. And the price of the Arc is too much. For me, they should return to traditional steel but improve comfort. The steel that is good for the blade is one that most can easily sharpen without being an expert on the subject.

Sigo prefiriendo la Surge. Diseño, herramientas, potencia.
La ARC es bonita, pero yo preferiría que agregaran un Punzón a la Wave, pues la Arc pierde la hoja cerrada y la wave con punzón, sería genial.

Magnacut, an advanced latest, greatest more pricey steel, but will it really make a difference ? Everything is a trade off in steels. Magnacut holds an edge better; but is harder to sharpen. Its more rust resistant, but not the rest of the tool. Need to sharpen in the field, skip the Magnacut. I cannot see using the hammer surface as to miss is an injury. The Surge is clearly the better dollar per feature. And magnets; hell no, I do use steel wool and it makes dust that loves magnets. Not so easy to wipe often a rare earth magnet when the steel attracted is a rusty powder. The ARC is lighter, sole attraction to me. I will stay with the Surge. Use the money saved for bits.

The magnet issue, in my opinion, doesn't track. I use a P4 everyday at work and in the shop, and have yet to experience the magnets picking up any shavings or debris. I guess the purists steer clear of magnetic screwdrivers as well. To each his own.

    • @Horde334

now if the p4 wasn't overpriced i'd get one but when a charge+ is only about 10$ more with a better knife steel, bit adapter, and has drivers that don't look like they came straight out of a leatherman wingman/sidekick all the p4 has going for it is the gimmicky magnet "technology" that leatherman is so super proud of cause as far as i can see the p4 was designed by interns who "think tools are cool" before they thought of practicality cause a stumpy worthless file, 4 flathead screwdrivers when you could've had a bit adapter instead and cheaping out with 420hc when the charge gets 154cm sorry but that screams corner cutting at its finest.
