I think the reason Jetpack Joyride & Fruit Ninja are Halfbrick's most popular games is because their conception came from the same guy in their company.
They're not popular because some guy worked on both of them, they're popular because of other reasons. They're simple, easy to understand, kid-friendly, and endless. That's why they're so popular. They're made with the idea of just pulling out your phone and popping in every once in a while in mind. They're fun, simple time-killers, and that's why they got so popular.
This... can be debated. The guy in question (Luke Muscat) made several more games before and after FN and JJ, that are not as popular. These games are: 1)Halfbrick Rocket Racing, which according to him sold terribly and lost them a lot of money. 2)Monster Dash, a game he was developing at the same time period as Fruit Ninja, and was taking place in the same universe as Jetpack (hell, Jetpack Joyride's entire existence can be credited to Monster Dash, as it was the game that introduced Barry's jetpack and the game was built from MD). It sold well, but nowhere near the Fruit Ninja numbers, so... 3)Fish Out Of Water, a fish throwing game, which was fun, but nowhere nearly as well received, this is so sad 4)Bears vs. Art, Halfbrick's premiere puzzle game. Aaaaand it might have been released too late to become another success. Lastly, I have a feeling that there's technically a THIRD game that can be legitimately placed alongside FN and JJ: Dan The Man. It wasn't originally their IP, it started as an unrelated web-series, but Halfbrick seems to own the rights, and the fan base for it is bigger than you would expect. And it was released after Luke's departure. The point is, while there might be some truth to this, I don't believe Luke's involvement is the ONLY reason. Cheers.
Jetpack Joyride 2 is imo a worthy sequel to the first game, even tho its progression systems are extremely wack and the level lengths can get ludicrous
yeah no, i completely disagree. the game is completely void of any life and has made countless mistakes that the first game didnt make. the art style sucks, the game looks and feels unpolished and has no meaningful gameplay loop. the sequel was made by a company that now is a shell of its past self.
@cqd.0v3 Well halfbrick is trying at least they do care about the fans hell they announced Dan the man 2 which will be coming soon and I believe they are trying to fix the problems that plague their subscription service halfbrick+ from what I've seen they are a pretty cool mobile game company they didn't turn out like modern day rovio where they just deleted all their old games off the appstore and while jetpack joyride 2 isn't a good sequel the game could get updates in the future where it actually improves the gameplay experience and maybe the artstyle? They aren't even like voodoo or other mobile game companies where they pump out the same low quality brainrot garbage on a daily basis
Jetpack Joyride is one of my absolute favourite games and a special interest of mine, so seeing this suddenly pop up in my recommended was a big holy shit moment for me today, lmao. i remember back YEARS ago when i used to play Halfbrick games all the time on an old Samsung tablet, and Jetpack Joyride was one of them! i wasn't very good at it but it was really fun and i've always absolutely loved the art style and the soundtrack!! i think the smooth "washed-out" sprite effect you talked about is less of a scaling issue and probably more related to it being a sprite filter. Luke Muscat made a video called "How I Designed Jetpack Joyride" where in it, he mentions a sprite filter that he and his team used when they were still developing GBA games, and i think that was used for Jetpack Joyride. i have an old version of the game on an old phone and the sprite quality looks just about exactly the same as it does on newer devices. although i think you are right about the text, it does look pretty crusty at times XD also Crazy Freaking Teleporter is SO GOATED!!! a lot of people find the vehicle hard to control but i've always thought it was one of the most exciting ones out of the bunch. the speed combined with the adrenaline of fast split-second strategic reactions is so fun to me and i've covered a lot of distance just using that vehicle. it's definitely a favourite of mine! about the paid vehicles: i have both, collected from both the Christmas event and the Turbo Tidal Chase event. i think the Wave Rider is my favourite vehicle out of the two, mainly because the mechanics are really fun to use when you master them. i do agree that it is a bit finnicky to use at first, but one you get used to the springy jumping mechanic, it becomes quite fun to use! the Sleigh Of Awesome is pretty cool and i think the skins you can get for it are some of the best (and cutest) in the game. on the topic of ads: yeah, i agree that the screen that forces you to watch an ad is very scummy, especially for a game that has arguably aged better than most Halfbrick other games *(cough cough* _the original fruit ninja_ *cough).* that's really the only major gripe i have with the original game in its current state. now, about Jetpack Joyride 2... listen, i like the game. i love the art style, i really like the soundtrack, the dialogue is fun and i love the silly character interactions, but like... it definitely has a lot of flaws. something i like about Jetpack Joyride is its simplicity. it has simple mechanics, a simple currency, simple goals, it's very easy to understand and it never feels like it's trying to shove everything in your face all at once. Jetpack Joyride 2, though, feels very cluttered. there's all these new currencies, there's jetpack upgrades, weapon upgrades, there's catastrophes to stop to get more currencies, there's a lot going on. before the game was launched on Apple Arcade, it was actually softlaunched in a few specific regions as an open beta on Android, and back when that was it a thing, it had ANOTHER currency to keep track of in the form of an energy system, which was thankfully removed when the game launched for real. but like. there's a lot happening and it's kinda overwhelming. Craig infodumping all of it onto you in the tutorial dialogue certainly doesn't help. and also as an Android user, i'm definitely pretty disappointed that i can't access the game (yet*). that isn't to say i don't like the game, because i really do! i've become accustomed to all these new villains, Craig, Robo-Barry and Betty are fun characters to follow, the game is very fun and colourful, i love me a good scrolling shooter and the level system is actually a really cool feature that adds progression and storytelling! i like it, and i hope it has as much longevity as the original game. *Halfbrick is planning to have JJ2 release on Android in a couple years, so i'm hoping that release will expose it to a wider audience. i want to see it do well, and i'd love to see where the story and character interactions go next! i'd personally like an event that primarily focuses on either the villains or Robo-Barry, as he hasn't gotten much characterisation yet and i'd like to see him become a character who's more separate from being a robot double of Barry. -also i think barry already had the added feature of sex appeal before betty was added but we're just gonna pretend i didn't say that ok ;)- anyway, all that aside, this was a really good video! it was very comprehensive and i agree with many of the points and criticisms brought up. i always enjoy seeing more people talk about this game because despite its popularity, it isn't really talked about in detail like this much (although that has been steadily increasing in recent times). i think this video's gonna be a favourite of mine!! also i'm def using that thumbnail as a profile picture, it's so good :D EDIT: so there's actually a super old update promo image from when Jetpack Joyride was still under development as "Machine Gun Jetpack" that says a new filter was applied to the game's graphics to make it look smooth, so yep, the sprites looking smooth is a filter! i can def see why someone would assume it's a scaling issue though with how old the game is and all. the game has been around for 13 years and well on its way to turning 14 this year... damn i'm old XD
i remember one time where my jetpack joyride bugged out and there were no obstacles at all. i let the game run for HOURS wanting to rack up my highscore to impress my siblings. i only realized wayyyyy too late that there was no way for me to die in order to save my score. lesson learned...
Loosely related, but Halfbrick also made a game called “Fish out of Water” which is an underrated classic if you ask me. I understand why it never got popular, but still ultimately really charming and fun!
I still love the first game to bits and have poured so many years into it. I've played just about every seasonal event and my SAM level is over 500 at this point. I'm never giving up on this genuine classic. Also, I want Barry Steakfries in Super Smash Bros.
Have you ever eaten steak fries with a rare steak? The juices soak into the fries and while not crispy, they pack so much flavor. They may not be S tier, but the certainly arent F tier.
There are a couple other secret vehicles in Jetpack Joyride as well, earned through certain events. Personally, I have gotten the Voyager, from a Star Trek event, and the Ghostmobile, from a Ghostbusters event. They provide different gameplay from the others, though they are more or less the same as each other, from my knowledge.
In terms of vehicles, there were some that were missing in this review and sadly are event exclusive due to copyright issues I am assuming. You still had to pay money to permanently own them but you could use them in their events, thankfully(?) young me brought them so I can review them here. For a Back To The Future event, they made the Hoverboard and the Delorean Time Machine. The hoverboard gave you a double jump, which in my opinion was great. You had to time your jumps and make sure that you didn’t get greedy. Definitely my favorite purchasable power up out of all them. The DeLeorean Time Machine and all its other variations, are very good ideas for what I can call playing and getting rewarded for playing well. The DeLeorean is definitely the weakest variant as it will only boost you towards 740 meters once you reach the limit of 88, and after that it becomes a Sleigh Of Awesome Skin. Not bad but you wished for more. The Ecto-1 and Voyager ShuttleCraft are far more interesting and are better versions of the DeLeorean. Both of them will reward you with a boost after letting the vehicle survive for 9 in game seconds, and I love this alot more than the DeLeorean because you are rewarded for keeping your Vehicle and are challenged by the game to keep it for a great boost. Both the Echo-1 and the Voyager ShuttleCraft are much better versions of the idea (with the Voyager ShuttleCraft doing tapping instead of tap and release like the Echo-1 and DeLeorean) and I wish that all of these vehicles were not locked behind a paywall or locked behind a reward for an event that won’t comeback. As these vehicles were fantastic and I wish that everyone could always enjoy them./srs

Cursing isn't necessarily an uncommon thing with Halfbrick's games. The initial game that JJ built off of had the same motorcycle, except it's called the "Bad Ass Hog" instead of saying "Bad As Hog". Also, there've been a few animations they made for JJ with some cursing in them as well.

yeah!! no one really seems to mention DTM and like... i know it isn't as popular as Fruit Ninja or Jetpack Joyride but it's certainly one of Halfbrick's most successful games!!
I was a big fan of Colossatron from them, I def played it more than any other till it got too hard from scaling edit: wait it (colossatron) got a sequel that also changes the genre to a shooter for some reason
Hey, Barnyard for GBA was quite decent - I actually got it as a 13-year old and had a lot of fun with it. ...even if I've never seen the movie itself. Sure, it was typical fare of "adventure game with minigames", but... it was good enough. *cope* Eh, I miss when trashy movie-tie-in-games were a thing.
i would love to eventually see a video taking shorter looks at some of the other, lesser known halfbrick titles, like age of zombies (a top-down horde shooter where barry steakfries originated) or dan the man (a interesting 2-d combat platformer)

dont forget about my goat dan the man. everyone wants to say jet pack joy ride and fruit Ninja where the most successful but it is really dan the man.
yeah!! no one really seems to mention DTM and like... i know it isn't as popular as Fruit Ninja or Jetpack Joyride but it's certainly one of Halfbrick's most successful games!!
my dad used to be a hardcore jetpack joyride player
Didn’t realize they also made Monster Dash! I think I played even more of that than I did fruit ninja or JJ
holy the sevie got the sponsor less gooo
I was a big fan of Colossatron from them, I def played it more than any other till it got too hard from scaling
edit: wait it (colossatron) got a sequel that also changes the genre to a shooter for some reason
Get the paid version of cut the rope 2, it’s better, the free version was added later
The game originally released as a free game w/ microtransactions, that version of the game was taken off tho
13:37 at least it’s not $9.99 a month like Apple TV which THANK GOODNESS!
Hey, Barnyard for GBA was quite decent - I actually got it as a 13-year old and had a lot of fun with it. ...even if I've never seen the movie itself. Sure, it was typical fare of "adventure game with minigames", but... it was good enough. *cope*
Eh, I miss when trashy movie-tie-in-games were a thing.

CALVINISM VIDEO REFERENCE?!?! 14:55
i would love to eventually see a video taking shorter looks at some of the other, lesser known halfbrick titles, like age of zombies (a top-down horde shooter where barry steakfries originated) or dan the man (a interesting 2-d combat platformer)
