Based on all of your comments I am going to replace my Fram oil filter with a Napa gold! So far I have put a thousand or so miles on the Fram filter. The plan is I’m going to install the Napa gold filter run it for a while then cut them both open and see what I find! Years ago I worked in parts sales and never heard so much bad stuff about Fram, but after all your comments and watching a few vids on UA-cam I decided it’s not worth the risk! So coming in the future Napa Gold Vs Fram orange break down! Thanks again to everyone for watching and commenting!
I worked at toyota Lexus 12 yrs. the OEM filter is THE best filter. It’s more cost efficient than the Napa god filter. You can buy filters of eBay if you don’t wanna go to a dealer. I like your videos , cause your almost like a Lexus mechanic, u like to be clean. You can spray brake clean after installing new oil filter. Easier to clean. Skid plate is tricky. I hate that part. Easier when you have a lift. Lol. Keep up great videos 👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🍺🍺🍺🍺
Your videos are exceptional! Very little useless chat, yet you are engaging and very informative. Please keep focusing on the GX470. I love mine and have no plans to trade it in. 220k and I have had very little go wrong with it but as it gets older I have experienced some issues. Here are some idea for future videos: replacing the purge value (a common issue as these trucks get older), working on the air spring suspension (again common issue as the trucks age) and timing belt replacement (your video would be a welcome addition so I have yet to find a good one). Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the support and future vlog ideas! We actually have already done the air suspension video. Check it out! Eventually we might do the timing belt video, that job is a beast from what I have read.
@@KRTLyfe Watched the suspension change video you did after I commented here - nice job. I want to keep the air suspension - no good reason, but I think it adds to the luxury truck mystique :)
@@KRTLyfe there’s a excellent video from a mechanic on UA-cam changing the timing belt. It’s a lot of work but can be done if you’re extremely self motivated 😂
Thanks for doing this video! Couple things I wanted to go over with you. Fram filters are notorious for not catching all of the grit, metals and such and will actually damage the engine by letting all that stuff by. Second of all when you refill the oil filter you should actually fill it with oil before you spin it on. When you start the truck up it won’t be sucking air from an empty oil filter and then when you go to check your oil you should really check it again after running it for about 2 minutes then let it sit for a minute or so then check it. Good Oil filters are anything from Napa or the factory Lexus/Toyota filter. Great video!
Best GX maintenance videos on UA-cam. Well lit, basic explanations. I was on the fence about doing some of this stuff but you make it seem easy. Thanks man.
I don't know if anyone answered your question, but I read in a group that the plastic thing up front is for highway stability, and it clicked with me, because I've had mine off for a while and I remember thinking at one point that it seemed more susceptible to wind than it used to. Didn't quite make the connection. Not 100% sure, but close.
Subscribed. Even if I didn't have a GX I might have subscribed, you make the messy job of an oil change look like fun. Going to take care of mine on Monday.
Use the same hoop filter wrench, but shorten the handle by chopping it with a cutting grinder wheel until you can easily use it on your filter each time. A little tape makes the handle more comfortable also. Have a bunch of different wrench styles and none seem work on the GX, but my chopped one now works great! My advice on putting the plate back on is to grow a third then a fourth arm. I do get a little better each time. Quick lube places will likely over tighten and strip the plate bolts. I would have suspicion also that they would not even change the filter when they see that plate to remove. Only way to be sure would be to remove the skid plate to check on the job. Once you do all that, you may as well just have changed the oil yourself. Even putting the filter on by hand will make it really hard to get off next time. Before my chopped wrench idea, I would burst a brain vessel trying to remove the filter by hand. Have 5 Lexus and a Tundra, all have their own little twists to make the oil changes harder than they should be. I only use OEM filters from the dealer. They cost about the same. Want to keep my 04 GX 300,000, 400,000, 500,000 miles. Had a bad dream that it broke…but it was only a dream!
Thank you for watching commenting and subscribing! Those are some great tips! We have a 100 series LC approaching 400k miles love these yotas they really go the distance!
Check out fumoto oil valves. You replace the drain bolt the first time and then from then on all you have to do is unlock and turn the valve instead of making a mess removing the bolt.

But since last oil change and moment when i bought gx i staryed reading little more about oils and my conclusion are : one of good oils with hugh reputation is seriously supertech synthetic from walmart which in test came out to be great oil produced by warren oil. And costco started produce great kirkland synthetic oil which gets good ratings in tests too. Soo now my oil changes costs me max 30$ with premium oil filter like royal purple filter ;) ---------> God Bless You Guys. Love your family videos. My advice: add liqui moly ceratec on next oil change... u will love it
Awesome, Thank you so much for the detailed information and watching and commenting. Saving money is so important right now so we will definitely look into it next go round.
Would you say $17k is a fair price for a 2009 model in EXCELLENT condition with $128k miles? It has recent maintenance records for fluid flushing, timing belt replacement, spark plug replacement, and all mileage interval maintenance. The air suspension works well too.
Scott Watkins IDK seems a bit pricey to me. We got our 2005 in great condition for $6500.00 I think. I guess it falls upon if the 2009 had the features you desire and are those features worth the extra coin. I also haven’t looked at KBB values for that year and model so that could be in the ball park.
KRT LYFE That’s a good point. I’m looking to build an overland vehicle so I don’t think the 09 has anything I’d need vs the 05-08. It had the black interior and exterior which I love so it was tempting at the dealership today. Just couldn’t justify it. KBB values it at at $15,600 in excellent shape which this one was. So a little off the mark I guess. Anyways, thanks for the input!
Scott Watkins I would say hold out and keep looking until you find the right GX for you. We searched for around 5 months till we found ours. We looked at 7 or 8 black on black GXs over that time until we finally came across one that was in great condition. One thing we kept running into was the cracked dash on many of them. Some had leaking valve covers. A few were just beat to hell by previous owners. Then we found ours, one owner always serviced at Lexus. We bought it the same day lol.
Please my Lexus GX 470 2008 model will crank for quite a while before it fires up. Fuel pump changed but there is no solution yet. This problem occurs when the vehicle is parked for, say 25mimutes or more How can you be of help sir? Thanking you in anticipation.
My advice is to use Toyota oil. Is not expensive getting the case at the Toyota dealership! I have doing it for approximately fir 6 years. Same with the oil filter get Toyota from eBay the 10 bottle case around $50.
Nooooooooooo, never use farm oil filters. You should buy the toyota filter. 100% better carbon filter than anything and OEM filter close to aftermarket price. I have the sequoia and same setup.
