  • Join us as we take a drive in my 2008 Lexus GX470 and I share my experiences, both off-road and on-road with the GX470 platform. We will take a look at what I like and dislike, particularly from the viewpoint of off-road exploring and overlanding.

    thanks for the review. Looked at your LX470 and Discovery reviews also. What length of the cargo space from behind the front passenger seat to tailgate in the GX and LX? I'm looking for a GX or LX overlander for one person to sleep inside of. I'm 5'9". thx.

    • @ForgottenWaypoints
      @ForgottenWaypoints  3 роки тому +12

      Great question! The GX is about 60" with middle row folded. If you physically removed it, you'd can another 10".
      The LX is 63" with the middle row folded and if it was removed you'd gain 12".

    • @Benallst
      @Benallst 3 роки тому +13

      5 11'' GX owner here, you'll have plenty of room to sleep inside if you either A. build a platform to go over the second row or B. remove the second row.

    •  3 роки тому +8

      The GX is very nice and has sufficient length but does not have a fold-flat cargo area; the 2nd row seats stick out, and the 3rd row seats are in the way (but can be removed). That makes the GX unsuitable for sleeping in without modification.
      For this and other reasons, I have a 4th-gen 4Runner, built on the same Toyota 120 (Prado) platform in Tahara but a bit leaner, lighter, and less tall. The 5-seater with the double-decker cargo system folds completely flat and has sufficient length (I'm also 5'9"). If you get a V8 Limited, it will have a similarly entry-level luxury feel as the GX, and it has the same engine and full-time 4WD system. A nice and unique feature of the 4Runner is the rear hatch with the retractable window.
      The problem is that V8 Limited models are hard to find. You tend to get a vehicle in better condition for your money if you go with a GX. If you are OK with a lower trim level 4Runner, you'll have more choices.

    • @Benallst
      @Benallst 3 роки тому +2

      @ sleeping without a platform drastically reduces the width regardless of fold flat because of the wheel wells, no?

    •  3 роки тому +4

      @@Benallst Depends on your criteria, I guess. In the 4Runner, you have 42" between the wheel wells. I think that's a good width, and you can still go a bit diagonal if you're taller than, say, 5'10". No mod required at all, and it takes 30 seconds to fold the seats down, so this is perfect for someone who sleeps in the vehicle only occasionally.
      Nevertheless, I do have a (fully removable) platform consisting simply of storage totes (IRIS/Container Store) that match the height of the wheel wells (9"). I put a full-size IKEA mattress on top, which is wide enough for a couple.
      Xplorer Steve DIY has a discussion on the width vs. headroom tradeoff.

    I like that I can stand on the rear bumper and access the back end of the roof rack, can’t do that with a lift gate. Coming from a Yukon, the lift gate does provide cover in the rain. There are pros and cons with EVERY vehicle but so far the GX has been a really fun vehicle to own...except at the gas pump.

    Owner of 2005 GX470. I love the barn style rear door. I carry kayaks and it’s easy to load them and access the gear in the back with the door opening to the side, easy maintenance and more reliable. I never had issues with the driver seat cushion, but I haven’t driven more than 5 hours strait. I love the beige interior and the quite comfortable cabin. This vehicle is engineered to the very little detail.

    Thank you for the good honest review, looking forward to more content on this rig! I test drove a really nice 08 GX this past weekend, felt almost new at 95k miles. Dealer must have thought they had a goldmine with it priced at 19k! But it was nice to finally drive one and put hands on things I'd only seen in videos. Hoping to source a 05'+ with a bit more mileage for closer to 12k to turn into a family explorer!

      Ours was $15k, but the previous owner had a large dog and the interior was a bit rough. But that's how we got a $5k discount!!
      They are starting to hold their value, but luckily that 2uz-fe will go forever, so just get a clean one in your price range and budget a timing belt/cooling overhaul and you should be good.

    We purchased a 06 GX 470 in July '20. Love the comfort, handling. We live in SC. Took a trip to UT in Sept. Stayed 17 days camping visiting nationals and states parks. Actually did a bit of off-roading in Moab area. Handled all of the obstacles well. In this video, you mentioned back fatigue. On the return trip, we put in 10-12 hour days. Neither me nor my wife experienced back fatigue. In fact, we were quite impressed with the overall comfort.

    • @ForgottenWaypoints
      @ForgottenWaypoints  3 роки тому +1

      Awesome. There was only one trip so far where the fatigue really hit me. I didn't have much of an issue on a Disneyland run from Utah to Southern California. I shouldn't have harped on the seats as bad as I did, they aren't THAT bad. But they still aren't as plush as a Range Rover, or even on '03 Tahoe (arguably the best seats GM has ever made). Glad you love your GX, we love ours too (in fact I'm working on a quick moab trail review with the GX right now). Which trails did you take?

    Funny the fuel range issue you mention in the gx470. I live in australia, the prado 120 version i have has a smaller engine it is a 3 litre turbo diesel 4 cylinder, it could do with some more horses under there. It does have additional fuel tank where the spare is on yours., about 47 gal in total over 2 tanks. Fill ups make me sad, they dont happen too often though. I can put half a paycheck into those tanks from near empty.
    Anyway range is 1600km which is 1000 miles. One of the things i love most about the vechicle is the range. It does 10.5 litres per 100k.

    Really great review! I am looking to get one myself. Hope they don't go up in value until I do. I've had several Toyotas and will never go anywhere else for our family's vehicles. That said, I feel as though the bouncy back seat (not latched clearly) during the latter part of the video is so YOTA. It's like getting the perfect latch is critical and you (as the owner) are the one who needs to learn how to get it right, not Toyota... no doubt better than dealing with the insane issues common of 'domestic' vehicles. Glad to see the GX470 works okay on longer trips with a family of three. I am interested in how three car seats work in these though, since that's a real deal for our fam and the reason I need a different vehicle. I hope you keep these videos going. Nice work!

It works great! Cannot do that with the hatch but maybe from the side door. My only nit to pick with the seats is that they don’t go back far enough. You asked for seating comments/preferences: I recently moved from many years in a 2001 Audi allroad 2.7 twin turbo with 6 speed manual. I typically like a laid back seating position with arms out in front of me and thighs well supported.
    I've just moved into a 2008 GX470-obviously an entirely different ballgame. Haven't taken any all daydrives yet, but given the 470's interior geometry, I'm surprised to find myself preferring the seat nearly as high as it goes (I'm 5’ 9”), with seat front as high as it goes for thigh support, lumbar support about halfway, and the steering wheel low and adjusted so I can easily see everything on the dashboard without moving my head. The top of the wheel doesn't even enter into the windshield's view. I love the amazing visibility the seat height brings, and I really enjoy the humongous side view mirrors.
    Looking forward to learning more about the car. It doesn't have KDSS, which is a good thing, but I'd sure like to find a way to beef up the sway bars!
    Thanks for your insights and thorough coverage!

      I made the discovery while driving. Thought I had it where I wanted it, but tried raising it a little higher-and liked it. Had to correct other adjustments to compensate for the seatbelt now too tight.
      Drove a little further. Tried higher. Repeat. I did this 4-5 times until I found myself pretty much at the limit. I was blown away with the view-and comfort.
      If I don’t have really good thigh support, I start getting cramps in tibialis anterior. This option also gives me the best, most complete thigh support.

    Bought a 2004 GX470 in 2003 and now has just 118k miles. Never off-roaded, fully maintained and pristine condition. Will never sell it. Best car I’ve ever owned and at 70 years old have owned a lot of cars. You won’t ever regret buying one. A lot of parts are relatively cheap and last for years. As for gas mileage, I use Lucas Fuel Treatment and get about 21 MPG in town and 27 on highways. Also makes it run smooth.

      I’m curious, too, about your thoughts on the 100 vs 200 series lx. I like the look of the pre-2008 200 series better, and I gather the the seats are a bit more comfy, have arm rests. And there’s a bit better road view over the hood, and the rear seats are easier to remove. The 200 series looks more bloated, has a much more powerful engine, more modern tech like adaptive cruise control, a cooler, etc. It seems most online prefer the newer 200 series, but some prefer the older 100.

      A few thoughts:
      My LX470 interior build quality looks better than early 200 series land cruisers (not LX). I was shocked. Later LC200s seemed to up their interior game.
      I prefer the LX570 interior to all trims, it's just awesome. It's just too bad the outside of the LX570 isn't as good as the LC200.
      I prefer the exterior looks of the LC200, especially the later versions.
      I like how the LX470/100 has removable seats. You can remove them in the LC200, but there isn't a quick release. That is a downgrade, IMO.
      I prefer the coil-over suspension to the LC100. I also like that the 5.7 has a chain and I don't have to deal with timing belts.
      If money weren't an issue, I'd have an LC200 or LX570.

    I love the GX models, and I am actually looking for one. Now, here is the real thing: A good clean one, between 05' and 09', no rust, is about $ 13k - 16k. Now, for $ 17k - 20k, you can get GX460, models 10' - 12' with same or less miles on it. It newer, better mpg, and as far as I know, the 4.6L is also very reliable. With these prices in today market, what would you buy? Thanks for your input !

    • @ForgottenWaypoints
      @ForgottenWaypoints  3 роки тому +6

      GX460 has a lot going for it, but the newer the 460 the harder it is to make it off road capable thanks to all the absurd Lexus body cladding. If you can get a 2010 or so, it might be tempting. If you are thinking for primarily an off road exploring rig, there is a lot to be said for staying with the 470.
      If it were me, it'd boil down to the best vehicle for the price. A low mile 470 for $15k can be built out quite a bit with the $5k you'd save jumping up to a 460....so in the end it depends on intended use and budget.

      Defiantly get older if you want an easy conversion into a trail rig. I was looking at newer 460’s (2015-2018) as I wanted a newer car and for the price I couldn’t justify having to rip the air suspension and body siding off a nearly $35k car. Great review! Been thinking about a GX470 or 2010+ 4runner to replace my 06 Liberty CRD. You said mid-teens for overall MPG, what do you normally get on the highway compared to offroad? This would be my adventure rig so miles mainly on the highway and forest roads (I'm in Oregon). Currently, I get mid 20s on the highway (got 28 on a recent 200 mile trip at 75-80mph but once I hit the city, it drops quick) and about 17 on the trails (I wish there were more diesel SUVs like these!). The main reason for the switch is the driver comfort for me at 6'3" is terrible. I can't see out the front windshield without craning my neck down and the seats are crappy (no lumbar). Plus I'm heading over 160k and know that my fairly reliable Jeep is entering into the realm of less reliability. I'd love something slightly larger like this or the 4runner but the MPG is the kicker, especially with this taking premium and being permanent 4wd. What are your thoughts? Did you consider a 4runner, especially one with the updated 4.0l?

    • @ForgottenWaypoints
      @ForgottenWaypoints  3 роки тому

      I wanted the 4runner, but I love my leather (and newer TRDs were out of my price range). My wife wanted a V8 AND the GX was much cheaper (or same price) than cloth 4runners at the same year/mileage in my area.
      I was getting 17-18mpg highway on street tires. That dropped when I put the larger off road tires on. I'd have to re calculate, but my guess is 16-17 is all I'm getting.
