For anyone without a convenient Toyota parts dealer nearby, I performed this service at home and used Valvoline’s new Extended Protection Full Synth ATF. It’s a grey jug and it now lists Toyota WS.
@@jcontradiction Yep! I used to have a hesitation after hard stops. No issues thus far. Steps taken: - Drained - Dropped pan - Surveyed magnets. - Cleaned pan - Replaced old filter - Replaced gasket - Added back amount of fluid drained. - Performed the cycles seen here but I ended up using techstream to observe ATF temp for final level check.
Better to follow a skilled pro like car care nut who is an actual Toyota Tech. AMD would strongly recommend against opening an unserviced tranny unless absolutely necessary due to mechanical issues.
Just finding your channel and GX470 content and loving the detail, thorough cleaning, and full video coverage of what you’re doing. I’m in between a novice DIY’er and where I’ll take most of these bigger items to an offroad Lex/Toy specialist. Your videos make it all seem doable. Keep the videos coming!
Good job. I just do a spill and fill ever 30k, which I think is spec'ed in the manul. I think it is adding conditioners back into the fluid that are lost over time. Assin transmissions in toyota trucks have been known to last a long time with no maintenance.
I'm not at your level and I knew u would have a transmission oil pan gasket leak after this maintenance so I skipped replacing the transmission filter part. I ran a fill tube through the engine bay down to the fill plug, so didn't have to use a pump. Took about 12-14 quarts to do the flush and it got rid of my transmission shudder and saved my torque converter. OBD tool worked on my FJ for the temp/overflow check.
A highly recommend taking that extra step and going ahead and dropping the pan. In my 03 with 210,000 had a horrible whining sound and also eventually quit going into gear all together. Come to find out that my filter was completely clogged with tons of gunk. So I replace the solenoid and then change my filter gasket put everything back damn thing shifts like butter now no problems over a year now
FYI I believe the oem toyota Lexus transmission oil is purple, so don't be to surprised when it comes out looking dark like that. Correct me if I'm wrong. Great video btw
If everything goes right tomorrow I will be picking one of these up with 136k miles on it tomorrow. Not sure if the trans has ever been serviced. I don’t like the flush procedure even though I know it’s the correct way. I’m going to drain the 5 quarts and just add 5 quarts. Drive about 1000miles and do it again. And then do that one more time after another 1000.miles. I did this with my last car and the fluid was fairly clean the last time.
Please review your protocol on doing a flush on high mileage vehicles. This protocol is not for every car and can lead to issues with transmission not shifting after doing a full flush.
Consider changing the wiring when you do this. Even if it isn't leaking through capilary action into the ECU yet it is only a matter of time on some GX470's
How is the transmission doing after the flush? Is it changing gear properly and no slipping? Because I heard that on high mileage transmission it is kind of risky to do a whole flush due to taking away the clutch particles with the fluid.
Unfortunately on a new to me GX the 24mm fill plug is rounded. Can i fill the fluid via the trans cooler hose instead like how you had it? (And without the other drain hose disconnected)
My 2004 has 246k miles with zero transmission maintenance. Looks like yours has about the same (241k?). I take it you don't know if your ATF was changed prior? I'd really like to do this by my gut says "no way!" 🤣
Lucky asf bro I got one with 152k nothing wrong supposedly, had it for 3 months woke up one day transmission started to slip & the next week it was dead. So that put a bad taste in my mouth with Toyota/Lexus in general. I know it’s been used but history was good & no rust & had been in FL its whole life. Now 10k in the hole with a truck that’s worth 1k maybe. So yeah. Keep them fingers crossed.
@@josephg.8919did some one before you or did you do full flush on transmission or case transfer or front/rear differential? If, yes, it could be the problem. Watch some car care nut videos. Sorry bro ....fell your pain. I heard you can go back and put some portion of that old fluid to get your transmission back online. I know it sounds counter intuitive, just watch the videos. Cheers!
Try and drain the oil, check if it smells burnt, pump it back. If it doesn't smell burnt, put the same amount of oil with additional half quart, Do this every couple of thousand miles and you are good.
I keep hearing it can be risky to drain and fill the transmission fluid.. a local mechanic recommended I not do it. He said “we had one drive in and replaced it at owners request and it locked up and didn’t drive out.” Obviously you chose to do it so I’d be curious on your thought process? Have loved watching this gx470 project you’ve done btw. Very skilled
That's a common concern when it comes to automatic transmission fluid servicing. I'm always in favor of replacing fluid, regardless of age or mileage. I wouldn't advise pressure flushing, but a regular drain and refill is not going to cause damage. I suspect most of these types of horror stories are the result of pressure flushing, overfilling, or using the wrong fluid. Every make/model of automatic transmission has a unique drain/fill process and often requires a specific type of fluid. It's honestly a lot more complicated than I think many shops give it credit for, and therefore the service is performed incorrectly and ultimately the transmission gets damaged.
Hi thanks 🙏 for all your great videos Im still learning from videos I was finished the your gx project and I hope you have move Lexus and Toyota cars for repair because I'm Asian guy 😄 , anyway may I know what cameras do you for recording your videos I guess you using two camera
Prior you servicing the transmission, was this the first time the GX has the transmission fluid changed? if so, at what mileage was the GX at when you serviced the transmission?
Not recommended full flush, only drain and fill twice total with each oil change. My transmission started to have issues after full flush at 70k, 17 gx460.
@@PracticalEnthusiast I always worry about counterfeits, so for me I would buy from the dealer, I feel you are already savings tons of money on doing it yourself so you can splurge.
I look forward to your updates, not because I am rebuilding a car but because it’s calming and give me confidence that something is being done well.
a new PE video! what a nice way to start the weekend

Nice work. Much involved work
Does it need any plug washers?
Very nice video. Thank you.
My 04 GX 470 has an exhaust pipe running across the middle of the pan. Thought I could the pan wiggled out but could not.

I definitely recommend it 👍

what kind of brakes did you upgrade to
They are stock equivalent brakes made by Raybestos.

It's doing great! I've put on about 1,000 miles since the fluid change and everything works fine and it shifts smoothly.

@@PracticalEnthusiast thanks so much. Appreciate taking the time to answer
Is all the same ATF OIL to a GX470 2008 ?
Great video thanks, it seems easy enough. I wonder how much do they charge for this service at a dealer or shop? My 2007 GX has 203K miles on it.
I bought mine with 125k and last tranny flush was at 122k I will do the next one myself at 148k supposedly it gets done every 30K after 100k?

I had no service history for the GX, and based on the fluid color, I'd bet it had never been changed. It had 241,000 miles when I changed it.
@@PracticalEnthusiast ah got it. Thanks for replying. Love the GX restoration videos
Someone may have already asked how the car did after the atf flushing.
It's shifting great! No problems.
Is that a filter or just a strainer cause so many opinions about it
It's technically a strainer since it filters larger particles.
Not recommended full flush, only drain and fill twice total with each oil change. My transmission started to have issues after full flush at 70k, 17 gx460.
Good video sir. Do you have plan to do an LED upgrade? We would like to collaborate with you on a product review and do a product sponsorship
Why don't you flush before filling?
Did you purchase everything from Toyota or online?
Online is usually much cheaper if you can wait for shipping.

No dipstick on these?
Unfortunately not.
Only on the 2003 model you have a dipstick, the 2004-2009 are "sealed" transmission, but with a fill and drain plugs.
Transmissions are weird
