The Impending Volcanic Eruption is Causing Distress and the Blue lagoon Closes for a Week
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лис 2023
- The tension surrounding the impending eruption is beginning to cause disputes about the inaction of the authorities towards protecting critical infrastructure, and even close the Blue Lagoon that remains open. The situation is also starting to have a big impact on the well-being of the residents of Grindavík, and it's very simple to understand.
Update: Nov 9th 02:00
Terrified guest have been fleeing from the Blue Lagoon Hotel / Spa tonight after the largest earthquake swarm so far started shortly after midnight. peaking with a M 5.2 that struck 500 meters away from the hotel, near the location where iv'e been scaring fumaroles with the thermal drone almost every day now.
Update: Nov 9th 08:00
The Blue Lagoon will close for a week as of today.
The hotel guests are in most cases being transported to Keflavik, but it's likely that some of them will go to Reykjavik.
My next update will be online soon...
Channel support is highly appreciated and needed to follow up on this full time since I'm cancelling all other tasks to this coverage 500 km from home.

Thank you for visiting the Just Icelandic Channel.
Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
The issue of Blue Lagoon seems to be being handled by exactly the same type of people as the ones running Amity Island in Stephen Spielberg's film "Jaws."
You’re going to need a bigger boat…
They do not want to lose money on the off chance it doesn’t erupt! Money before safety! SMH
As always it comes down to profits before people.
Same attitude like in New Zealand, when the White Island volcano erupted in 2019 that killed so many tourists. The warning signs were all there, but no safety was enforced, because business was deemed to be more important. Sadly some things never change.
@@tshaika9165 Any earthquake activity that's been going on in the Kermadecs, islands, dont go out and visit the volcano.
Thank you for your work to bring us this fantastic footage and insight into the current happenings in Iceland!
Thank you too!
@@JustIcelandic The people should get out of the lagoon pool. Could this be a repeat of 1973 ?.
@@germanslice They've just announced it is closing for a week.
And in English!
It is definitely a very nervous time for local residents and employees at the Blue Lagoon and the Power Station. Thank you for the update, Gylfi.
But they are getting plenty of warnings before the start of eruption. They just need to take these warnings seriously and move away ASAP.
Three minutes is not a lot of time
Thank you for your update! From Canada. Hoping all will end well.
Thank you!
I'll admit, I do feel a little like a disaster tourist to your UA-cam channel, but your coverage is so thoughtful and personable that I immediately click on each new update. So, thank you.
To me this situation seems quite terrifying. The bus company that has withdrawn service seems to be the only one that's shown common sense and understanding for it's workers. If by some miracle things calm down ... wonderful .. surely better safe than sorry. My thoughts go out to all who live in the area.
What a crap. Iceland is the country in the world which has far, far most volcanic erruptions in the world. For more than hundred of years 1 person has died. Scientists are working day and nights monitoring everything. And people like Gylfi which is great.
All the nation fallows up news and information. Before the magma comes up there comes special eartquakes. The Blue lagoon should have closed, like they have done now. But we have harsh nature, good infrastructure, the houses have all iron strings in the walls of concrete so they move with the swings of earth.
All of us are worried but we work togeather. We have no army or navy, but we have great rescueteams who are yes, all volunteers and each family has someone in the rescue teams.
just opened the live webcams and was greeted with the northern lights!!!! Cheers!
And a M5.2 earthquake by the Blue Lagoon at 00:46 the bar there is busy now....
I was stationed at Keflavik in 1968. Really enjoyed Iceland. I remain interested in the country and it' s beauty. Thanks for the continued updates. Hope for the best for that section of the country. Hope to visit again in the near future.
I've been seeing your name all around today.
Theyre singing your praises about your thermal drone and how beneficial it is.
The whole world will know your name before long.
Keep up the amazing work youre doing! Youre so appreciated!
Much as I love watching volcanos live, particular in Iceland, I am actually hoping this one doesn't happen. Thank you for all the updates and the aerial views.
Thank you for the update. Build the barriers NOW if there not needed then it’s a blessing, if left too late well it’s going to be a disaster. I think I’d rather them in place than wait until it’s too late. Please take care as this sounds really bad, I hope everyone stays safe and well 🙏🙏❤️
Exactly! Build the barriers.
What cost would be greater; building barriers that are not needed (this time) or not build barriers and lose a power plant and an unknown amount of lives?
Thank you for keeping everyone updated on the situation, stay safe from 🏴
Thank you, I will
Watching this situation occur is very interesting but I'm also very sad that the people of Grindavik are having to live in fear of the unknown. It must be terrifying, knowing that at any moment, your house, belongings and possibly life is in great danger. As much as I love your channel Gyllfi, and also geologyhub, we must remember that saving lives is the most important thing. You have done amazing work with your drone and also educating those of us that don't live in beautiful Iceland. Keep up the great work and stay safe .
I'm sorry to say this to you but it's the absolute truth! We are ALL ALWAYS living in the unknown. You don't ever know what may happen no matter where you live in the world that can cause you to loose all that is the foundation of your life, including your children , home , and all things that you consider define your life and who you are. I know first hand because it happened to me. Me and my 3 young children were all separated due to wrongful actions and misinformation . We all never got to go home again . I have sat on a stoop ever since searching for my identity! But that's life right ? You never know!
You do such a good job Gylfi, and entertaining too in your lovely dry way. Thanks.
Oh thank you!
Was suprised that I heard you specifically mentioned on the geology hub channel. Though I shouldn't because you have the best channel covering all of this. Thank you for all your hard work.
They both are among the best at heart!!
I'm glad you spoke of the groundwater as my biggest concerned remains a phreatic explosion, an event that can occur with no warning at all.
Completely agree with your local expert's frustration about the lack of preventative measures, yes a few tens of thousand dollars might be wasted if no eruption occurs but what is that compared to the loss of the power plant or the town if nothing is done?
And keeps on being useful in case of a next eruption. As the unrest in the ground will stay for the foreseeable future.
As in the UK with their inundations: it is the political willingness of the whole country to spend their money on a small part of the population.
It does not play here in the Netherlands, where the danger of flooding always concerns the whole country. No discussions.
phreatic eruptions are more likely in already developed geothermal fields due to the abundance of shallow hydrothermal water. Here you have an old lava field with most groundwater being present in deeper parts that are harder to superheat suddenly.
Thanks, that does sound encouraging.@@Vulcano7965
While there is so much empty space in Iceland, I feel sorry for the possibility of magma attacking people's source of life. I hope there will be no sad events. Greetings to Iceland.
Thank you for your hard work 😎👍
Thank you Gylfi. It is easy to get complacent when we are used to tourist friendly volcanoes like "Bob," but the reality is that volcanoes are highly unpredictable phenomena that have caused untold deaths throughout human history. If we do not learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it.
Exactly. I am from Washington State, USA. I very well remember the eruption of Mount St. Helens.
I don't know who it was said - "The only thing we can learn from history is that no one ever learns from history".
God forbid
@@229andymonwhen the earth goes supernova, will history matter?
@@user-qf7ud5de9h The Earth is a planet, not a star. Stars go supernova -- but only if they are big enough. (Our Sun isn't.)
Sadly sounds like the mayor from jaws, worried about tourist season.
You were mentioned on geology hub and with your thermal images today.
Take care and best wishes gylfi to you and your country
Thanks for your coverage. The officials are just too cowardly to make a decision. What if I do this and nothing happens? Really they should ask, what if I do nothing and people lose their lives.
Stay safe, and keep up the great work.
Thank you so much for the update Gylfi...I can well understand the consternation of the people of Grindavik...I hope that they start building defences soon for it will be too late once it erupts...I hope that both you and your people stay safe..❣.
Regards from Perth Scotland 😁
Thank you for the updates and information. Stay safe.
Thank you, I will
It is insane that the Blue Lagoon resort stays open. It's one earthquake away from either being very close to an eruption or magma getting close enough to the ground water to heat it in an instant to boiling...cooking anyone in the water. You'd be crazy to go there.
The hot springs scene from Dantes Peak comes to mind
It's currently closed until at least the 16 Nov
Just as this video was posted there was a 5.2 earthquake at Svartsengi followed by more than a hundred earthquakes in the hour following. some quite large. The swarm is still ongoing at the moment.
I felt 2 of the largest here in the city, it's the largest earthquakes swarm so far and the epicentre is 500m from the Blue Lagoon
Thank you for another great update. Also I enjoyed seeing your car journey. Take care 👍
Thanks 👍
Hope everyone is taking care of one and another, stay safe
Thank you for the information!
Thank you for your updates and honest thoughts! I hope for the safety of you and all the people in Grindavik! ❤
🤞
Thank you for this background info. It's clear to me now how devastating an eruption could become for a lot of people, with a big risk for large scale destruction of essential infrastructure.
Thank you, this is a superb channel!
Thank you too!
Your dedication, work, and commitment to the beautiful country of Iceland is commendable. Be safe and keep up the great work. Takk Fyrir'
Thank you for your thorough reports. My thoughts and prayers are with all Icelanders.
Good luck for the People of Iceland!
Gylfi, your work is amazing! I hope your countrymen appreciate what you are doing. It seems as though it can contribute significantly to everyone's safety properly used and appreciated! Bravo!
Þakka þér fyrir ! I have only experienced one quake in my lifetime here on the east coast of the USA and it scared me to death. I can't imagine what the poor folks near this must be experiencing. I hope you are wrong about the Blue Lagoon, but I fear you aren't, especially considering the increase in seismic activity & decrease in depth. Stay safe, Iceland! ❤
I wish you all all the best, from this island of dampness and drizzle, Great Britain.
Thanks a ton :)
Beautiful last shot!
With all that water around at the Blue Lagoon, there's quite a big chance for a phreatic eruption, where the water flashes to steam causing an explosion.
Only tightly closed in water can explode. Surface water just evaporates, slowly or as hot steam.
@user-ij1nv8be3i true. however, there is abundant groundwater in that area. A phreatic eruption is entirely possible.
Thank you for your ongoing coverage of this potential crisis. The human propensity for prioritising recreation and dollars over safety and lives, never ceases to amaze, and disgust, me. Take care, and be safe.
For the new subscribers, this is the best channel for anything related to volcanism in Iceland. Hang around. You won't be sorry.
The waiting is the hardest part!
Exactly...
A lesson from the UK... When politicians or others in positions of authority act as though they are the experts and choose not to listen to the real experts, everyone will suffer the consequences.
Your videos and research are a valuable resource for the Icelandic people. Well done!
The authorities will be held accountable if there's a major tragedy at the Blue Lagoon. Especially because they had credible information that this potential lava flow was going to occur.
Unfortunately, that doesn't help if anyone is hurt.
They seem to be so afraid of declaring an emergency and having nothing happen than they care about being responsible.
And how will blaming people after the fact help?
@@wiretamer5710It won't help, but the blame will happen. And probably be used as a political football, to attack those in charge. Not like the next ones will know any better what to do the next time. When everything used to be a surprise, and you blamed it on God, it might have been easier to live with. Nobody likes predictions of danger that might not turn out. Nobody wants to close down business or evacuate their homes. And then, it might be too late.
I wonder if there is also getting sued by travel companies who already book big blocks or additional things,
Are authorities ever held accountable in the modern age?
Oh so heartbreaking😢 thank you so much for your videos. So informative!
I enjoyed the driving tour you gave us today and as always greatly appreciate your detailed updates.

Thanks a ton 👍
Very difficult times, but time for decisive actions, that is what the people would expect. Take care Gylfi - as I write, I see the activity is increasing again.
Wow, 5.2 magnitude! I didn't think that there was enough earthquake activity to get things started yet. But, here it is. Hopefully, everyone stays safe 🙏
This is starting to look like the worst case scenario. I really hope that decisions can be made quickly because going through constant earthquakes and the looming fear of eruption, plus the power plant being taken out is extremely stressful.
The psychological impact of the tremors and the risk of an eruption is something not often covered. After only a brief period, people become sufficiently unsettled that they no longer want to hang around. This could be said to be a useful natural 'gut reaction', because hanging around this area is not well-advised now.
if it errupts the lava can go a long way, cover several miles. and be over 20 metres thick. Sometimes it can be 100 feet thick in places, and there are no high hills in this area. its mainly flat exposed area.
@@MrMesospheric for one of my grad school classes I have to do a presentation. What I’m focusing on is trauma after a natural disaster. Since I lived on the west coast of Washington State in the US, I learned a lot about earthquakes , tsunamis, and volcanoes. My presentation is going to be on the survivors of a magnitude 9 earthquake in the Cascadia fault and the presumed tsunami that would happen after. Those that survive are going to be dealing with trauma on such a large scale that the demand of mental health care that there probably won’t be enough providers to help with survivors. I’m honestly surprised that more people in Iceland aren’t having problems with all these volcanoes and earthquakes that have been happening for 2+ years.
For those reading this shortly after this excellent video was made by Gylfi, earthquake hit hard at 5.0 and followed by many more 4 (Last time the eruption started shortly after similar quakes). I have familie in Grindavik and they are worried deeply. Maybe I am biased but I agree 100% with Ármann Höskuldsson, start the fight now! Better fight than do nothing (always better for morale). Edit: Blue Lagoon is now Closed!!
It's definitely building up to something. 🌋🐨🇭🇲
The largest earthquake swarm so far started an hr. ago
I agree with you on the preparation. They should at least get trucks, cats, and loaders on standby to start building the wall.
Hopefully Icelandic authorities have earthmoving equipment on call in case a dike is needed to divert lava flow. You can’t stop lava but perhaps you can protect infrastructure.
PS - We use to go to Grindavik weekly to get fresh cod for the Friday and Saturday night USO fish fry on the Naval Air Station (NAS) Keflavik when I was stationed there in 1979-80. Hope no lives are lost or serious damage occurs in the event of eruption.
Great info and edits on the vid. The stakes are high and you express it perfectly.

It is unbelievable how governments are afraid of taking difficult measurements while at the same time risking thousands of people's lives. Please stay safe
Sun Tsu a Chinese General and Philosopher on the eve of a battle would tell his soldiers that anticipation of death is worse than death itself. Let’s hope that everyone’s worries is worse than what actually happens. Encyclopaedia Britannica’s sales motto was “knowledge is power.” You and others are allowing people to have advanced warning and knowledge that all your ancestors could ever dream of. 🙏
I appreciate your dedication. You are by far the best reporter on the subject of earthquakes, volcanoes and tourism in your country. Were I live all we have to worry about is tornadoes and wildfires. I can image how frustrated Prof. Ármann Höskuldsson is about the agencys. Like here at home they always use the excuse, they dont want to start a panic, but when lives are effective they should tell the people the truth so they can be prepared. I see other videos on UA-cam, about this possible event, but they just seem to copy your news and dont think or investigate for themselves. So thank you so much for your dedication and detail. Finally🤗 Oh did I wait for this update! Thanks Gylfi. Love from Denmark 🇩🇰
You're welcome 😊
@JustIcelandic You know we value your opinion, first and foremost. As someone who lives under a volcano, in wildfire territory, who has seen people lose everything in seconds, I feel for the people in that town. 1973 wasn't that long ago. The government is leaving themselves out to have another nidstang on the Alting lawn if this thing blows and they have done nothing to protect lives and the plant. The owners of the Blue Lagoon seem simply money hungry, probably trying to recoup after the years of restrictions. Safety should ALWAYS come first.
Be safe and one day Gylfie, we will be back to laughing at plowmen errors and watching the Ravens and sheep❤
Gylfi, thank you for the update, my prayers and thoughts are with you and the people of Grindavík. Love your work. I'd love to come a visit Iceland one day.
I've visited Iceland and loved it. Dress in layers. Expect food to be expensive but delicious.
Gylfi, thanks for the update on the seismic activity around the Blue Lagoon & power station & Grindavík. It must be so scary for the people in the area, especially when the large quakes struck overnight. Stay safe Gylfi. Takk fyrir.
Always welcome :)
I did not expect to hear that earth barriers are not yet being constructed… I’m astonished 🤯
It must be extremely nerve-wracking, with all the earthquakes and the uncertainty. It would be kinda nice for the eruption to start, just so the guesswork would be over. Best wishes for everyone dealing with this.
Very strange comment considering the likely very negative effects of an eruption.
It'll be explosive kind of eruption, so you don't want just stay there and wait when it'll starts.
"kinda nice for the eruption to start" What a silly comment. I think you were trying (very badly) to say that the stress of an imminent event can be almost as bad as the event itself. Unless people die of course.
The Mt Pelee disaster comes to mind here. 30K lives lost in the town of Saint-Pierre on Martinique as a pyroclastic cloud rolled into town. Ignoring seismic warnings doesn't end well. Fascinating update - stay safe
Greetings from Nevada. Geology Hub did a show on you today. You may get a lot more supporters. Keep an eye on sub numbers. Anyway, stay safe out there. You are in our prayers. Wishing you all the best! Bye for now.
You are my go to for info about Iceland. You are doing a wonderful job. Thank you.
Wow, thank you!
Gylfi thank you so much for your continued great coverage of this situation. I was glad to see The Geology Hub using some of your recent thermal footage and giving you a great shout out. He doesn't think an eruption is imminent either. I agree with your expert who is urging making preparations to mitigate the potential damage now rather than waiting until and eruption starts when it may very well be too late. Above all please use caution when gathering your footage. Your safety is paramount to us.
I agree the seismic signs you describe are worrying, but some geologists are saying even at this late date that it is still possible that all this magma could still cool and solidify 4 kilometers underground and never breach the surface to cause an eruption. Waiting for an eruption that is predicted, but slow to materialize is very stressful for the people of Iceland, but the best thing to do is prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Thanks for the update.
My prayers and well wishes for all those who may be soon impacted by this eruption. Just really praying folks are smart, and heed any evacuation warnings. Thank you for your wonderful work to inform everyone dear. Bless.
Thanks, Gylfi!
From what I read the Blue Lagoon has closed today, that was the right thing to do!
I rather be safe than sorry. I pray they make the right decision at the right time. Thank you for the update.
Very comprehensive report. The rainbow so beautiful. Thank you
👍
This riddle of danger without optimal response reminds me of the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption in the Cascade Mountains of the northwestern US. Officials drove from house to house to reach all households, even the most isolated. Most people left. Some refused to leave. One elder with the honorable American name of Harry Truman adamantly refused to leave. Harry and 56 others died including a renowned volcanologist monitoring the volcano who didn’t get away in time. Iceland has known for decades now that the striking cleft down its middle is where two tectonic plates meet. Nothing humanity now knows and perhaps nothing we’ll ever discover can alter the movement of those vast geologic plates. We’re all floating on a sea of fire. Mid-plates are relatively safe but places where the plates meet catch hell. Look at what happened recently in southwestern Turkey where three plates meet: hugely tragic losses. Eventually humanity will figure out how to manage all this with quake resistant buildings (invented in old China eons ago and still standing), evacuations, humanitarian aid and support for the displaced. You’re smart, compassionate, modern people, Iceland. Figure this out.
Stay safe!!
I agree with your statement that barrier walls should be built around the power station and Blue Lagoon.
Thank you for all your efforts.
