We havent had any infastructure loss in 50 years and id like to continue that streak. In 1973 vestmannaeyjar erupted and 400 homes were lost (only 1 fatality because of gas hiding in basements). the people then didnt have volcano insurance since nobody expected a volcano to destroy a town so they had to move in wherever they could, and a popular spot to move was, well you can probably take a wild guess. I hope the people dont have to loose their second town
thankfully, these seem to be the sort of disasters that don't really get to sneak up on you, thanks to modern science and our geologists keeping a close eye on what's going on. my very layman ass is projecting a very small amount of direct casualties, so the trauma will be mostly be economic, ecological and emotional. that's still fucking awful, but at least we're not turning into Gaza over here or something

Not really back and forth. It pushed up from beneath (it had ridiculous amounts of pressure) into the sill. Think of that like an inflatable pillow, when the pressure got to a certain level it pushed through into the old dyke (vertical feature) and spread along that which released some pressure in the sill (pillow deflates). Now the sill is filling again from below. It could push through upwards, or back into the dyke. Either way, at the point in reaches the surface it suddenly finds a point where there is no pressure above and loads below so loads with spurt out.
