- This video guide steps you through the process to setup your single, dual joysticks, throttle, HOTAS or pedals in Star Citizen 3.23+ or newer.
This guide covers the mastermodes additional keybinds, and even suggests a handy way to use 1 button for multiple actions. Use 1 button to either toggle NAV / SCM modes with a short press, and a long press to engage QT jump. Likewise we can use the same button to SET and RELEASE throttle trim.
Having trouble with the quantum travel or SCM / NAV mode toggle? Jump to 02:26
Also covered are exporting and saving your keybinds, reversing left/right sticks if they swap positions. and even how to id device numbers.
An advanced section suggests targeting, countermeasures, and navigation keybinds to get you started. A guide for setting your speed limiter and throttle trim.
This method works WITHOUT third party software such as Joy2Key, TARGET, or Joystick Gremlin.
The joysticks pictured here are VKB Space Combat Edition Premium NXT EVO, but process works on others as well.

I've tried other peoples settings with little to no luck, and hours and hours of work. Time to do my own and you do an excellent job of making it look simple.
You're too kind! Glad I can be of help!
Everyone's setup is personal. It's best to go through all the settings you need and set them one by one where you feel most comfortable. On my VKB's, I swapped out the analog hats for the digital. They feel less sloppy.
EXACTLY! Best to make your own bindings. This video is titled GUIDE rather than "the only way" for that reason.
Just got my sticks yesterday and this video is by far the best one ive come across! I tried the copying of other peoples contols but the copy paste method always has issues with joystick gremlin... Thanks for putting this together and laying down the basics!
Congrats on the sticks! Glad I could help you with the setup.
best bindings guide bar none thanks again
I appreciate your kind words, citizen. Glad I could help.
i have been waiting for this vid! great work!
Sorry for the delay, thanks for watching.
@PaganLinuxGeek naah, all good. It came at the perfect time!
Awesome! Thanks 🙏🏻
Happy to help!
Thanks so much for your work 🙏
I'm happy to help, and thrilled when peeps are in better place then when they started the video. I very much appreciate your thankful comment.
Awesome guide!
I appreciate your view and kind comments o7 citizen!
I really hate using the console command for swapping left and right sticks. It's more time consuming, but you can force left and right. Unplug the left, get fully in the game. Test that it is working. Exit the game, plug in the left, reload the game. done. I have done this, and it holds the left and right orientation forever.
I've found that adding or removing a USB device can change the order. Changing the ports it plugs into can change them. The TM16000 seemed to be more susceptible than my VKB but that could be because the VKB device IDs are specific for each model.
@@PaganLinuxGeek I have used this method on both tm16000s and vkb. worked perfectly every time.
Perfect tutorial. No gobaldygook! Thank you.
@adamkelley4746 thank you! Got it under 12 minutes this time too
MADE IT SO SIMPLE
Thank you for commenting, and watching!
I use a HOSAM setup, left hand stick controls ship throttle and strafe left/right with the hatswitch used for strafe up/down and targeting. Joystick throttle is used for gun convergence adjustment. Steering with the mouse. It's truly an abomination lol
Do you engage in ship vs ship combat often?
I set throttle forward backward in controls and hours. When I back on the throttle it goes to 0 and then bounces back up
@OldManGamer65 did you bind to abs or rel? With my STECs setup it stays where I push handle, so I chose abs. If your throttle springs back to center then you might want rel.
Tried following this but certain things aren't working for me. Axis/strafe binds are fine, but no buttons or hat inputs register. Any ideas please? Anyone?
First: exit all games, and joystick setup software. Meaning close TARGET, Joy2Key, Joystick Gremlin, or etc. Open settings on the start menu and search for JOY. It should offer usb game controllers. Launch that and test your joysticks. Verify that each axis and button is responding correctly. If it isn't working there then it's not going to be properly detected in Star Citizen. If you see errors, or buttons not responding than you might need to reset and reconfigure your joysticks. What kind of joysticks you using?
Thank you for replying. I’ll try that tomorrow. Using VKB NXT EVO stick and Omni left.
OK. In the VKB conference utility are options to reset the stick to defaults and calibrate. VKB has excellent support. Their discord is usually fast, there are videos on their YT channel showing how to calibrate, load defaults. Etc. If you have trouble hit me up on discord. My discord info is linked on channel page. Same name in discord as YT.
@@PaganLinuxGeek This helped. Thank you so much! All working now.
@Cryomoprh2 excellent! Party on Wayne!
Also when I set my limiter, it acts like a throttle
The throttle trim limiter locks the speed in when you set it. you can pull back on throttle (or stick) to slow down, speed resumes after release. There's several binding options. set with both a long and short press, and release or clear with a long and short press option. Replay that part of the video for a better demonstration.
Why is it that star citizen players mostly use the twist as roll? Roll naturally is left and right stick movement.
I can only speak for myself here. It was a natural transition from mouse movement. Mouse left/right was yaw on defaults. Of course, that's one of the benefits of making your own keybinding profiles; setting it up as the player wishes, isn't it?
my logitech 3d pro i think just died cannot get pitch down so may ship would go upwards to work so its flying just downside for some reason in recalibration looks fine but in game wont work also i cannot set pitch up down, its not detecting it at all prob have to buy new one
If it's only recognizing one direction it certainly seems like a controller issue. Before you do though; open the joystick applet in windows settings and test all axis. Open the settings icon (looks like a cog or gear) and search for "joy" it should show "Setup USB Game Controllers". Double click your logitech 3d pro in the list and test all axis. If it's working properly there, then the sticks ok and it's likely a mapping issue. Reach out to me on discord if you want a second set of eyes on this. PaganLinuxGeek. @@PaganLinuxGeek i learned keyboard n mouse xd ill boutgh new one it most definetly rip :)
@@Sheppardsg1 I realize you didn't request recommendations. I will just say that I've been very happy with my VKB Space Combat Edition Premiums. The STECS is very nice as well.
I was also waiting for a vid for this, all my joystick inputs would be stuck goong in 1 direction Left or backwards. Totally unplayable, even tried other games and all was well. Super frustrating to have to play Star Citizen like a Peasant! Jk!😂
Like a common pleb? Heaven's to Betsy! lol Glad I could help get you back on those sticks. o7 Citizen!
I have found KB+M to be liberating, stopped using my Virpil throttle and joystick for Star Citizen about a year ago, the flight dynamics are just to basic to warrant the effort, ''DCS/Hunternet/MSFS/XP12'' work to perfection, yet SC...kinda waste of good hardware. KB+M in SC is simple, reaction times and control precise.
I would urge you to repeat this in spectrum, and tag Yogi.
Sticks still nice for easy to reach keybinds while using kb m 😅..the again using both seems to get real glitchy
So you're here to talk people out of setting up sticks for SC? *clap*clap* for not using them I guess?
@@0p3r8r The yare a pain for SC...an absolute pain, DCS/Hunternet/MSFS/XP12..........simple. SC KB+M
@@davewills148 Yes I understand. What I do not understand is WHY, in a video that is helping people set up sticks, you feel the need to post that you don't use them.
