    I've been using Alpha Prime + WarBRD HOSAS since late December or early January but I got the Virpil Torq (t rudder helicopter style pedals) to use with them. These pedals only provide two inputs but you can keep your legs more stationary and heals planted on the ground, don't have to worry about spinning office chairs, and it takes up less of a footprint under the desk. I'm was initially going to do roll on the pedals but ended up going with forward/reverse on them instead and strafe up/down left/right on the left stick and roll on left Z axis.
    Honest I've put most of my time into arena commander and don't even really have all my controls set correctly for PU. Desk or chair mounts are most certainly a must and I think desk is an obvious choice for me. I like to move the sticks further down the desk and out out of my way when I'm not using them but pull them in close when I'm ready to play. I'd also rather have the cables connected to my desk than the chair.
    Initially I did something that I thought was crazy but had seen other people on forums try and put the soft center cosmos cams in my left stick but the no center cosmos cams in my aiming stick. Honestly one of the main reasons I did this was because I was unsure what I wanted and wished to try both cams but I think I'm going to keep the setup now so it provides a little extra help finding the center and making sure my ship doesn't drift but keeps the smooth pitch and yaw aiming. I also tried the heavy springs briefly just last night but I don't think I like the feel as much and switched them back.

    I like the idea of left Z as speed limiter control, especially when I have joystick Z adapter extension. I'll add that to my config. Other than that I use buzzkiller config with pedals and that works really well for me.

  • @GraphiteSC
    @GraphiteSC 6 місяців тому +1

    You should tighten the clutch damper on the left stick so it stays where you put it. Then change the key bind for the left stick Y to be throttle forward abs. - acting like a traditional throttle where it’s 0-100% forward thrust. You’ll have to bind reverse abs to something else (I used one of the levers on the back - feels nice squeezing it when landing etc). But now you have the best of both HOTAS and HOSAS functions.
    Clutch damper is new on the prime’s that makes this possible.

    • @Dankfrankest
      @Dankfrankest  6 місяців тому

      What would you use for strafe up and down in that scenario? Twist perhaps?

    • @GraphiteSC
      @GraphiteSC 6 місяців тому +1

      @@Dankfrankest yeah, I have the left stick Omni’d with their Z extension. Left stick strafe up/down is Z twist up/down.

      I would recommend using the left stick for vertical and horizontal thrusters and pedals for fwd/rev thrust. But its all subject to personal preference and whether or not you want to invest into pedals. I already have the MFG Crosswinds. I feel like I have full control on my ships movements with precision while in decoupled

    Very well done. The Alpha Prime has some really cool yet complex trigger combinations. Welcome to club Virpil from TM. I imagine its life altering. For mounting, I recommend MonsterTech for the most modularity later. I love that you are using them on a lap desk to counter the extra height issue mounts will add a different feel due to ergonomics. I'm working on a 6dof flight yoke that essentially combines the functionality of a sim racing wheel and a standard flight yoke. I wanted to be able to make something that's compact, intuitive, precise, and able to be used with other games and the flight yoke style seems the most promising. All rotation axis will be mapped to physically tilting the yoke where you want to rotate, so there is a 3 axis gimbal with sensors at the center of the yoke. Strafing will be mapped to a thumbstick on the yoke, though I may test ways of physically translating the yoke up-down/left-right/forward-backward as a way to input translation. My current idea for forward and backward acceleration is to use analog triggers, but I'm not sure about that yet. Eventually I will load up the grips with tons of bottoms and wheels, but I haven't finalized the layout of those. Would love to hear thoughts on whether this sounds practical or stupid.

    I've been using the dual stick Thrustmaster's you showed for years and yep, the twist rotation on one stick suddenly and sporadically now has input causing one to be unusable. I too have been eyeing the Virpil setup, but have been told by many dual stick is more for combat and a bit of racing, but a single stick with a HOTAS is more ideal for say cargo running (SCU, data, and personnel), which I'm mainly interested in. So I'm going to look at making the switch to using a HOTAS, but excellent coverage of these and they are gorgeous to look at!

      If by this you mean the stick won’t physically twist, there is an Allen key screw near the base of the stick (on the side facing you) that you have to loosen. If you mean that it won’t bind to anything, that a very different answer.
