Let's not forget that while Layne was fighting for his life, trying to get off the needle, James Hetfield would stand on stage and make fun of him for having to cancel a show here and there. He'd do an exaggerated parody of Layne's "shitty" vocal style, and say how "anyone" could get up on stage and do it, "even if they are a little sick". I was 20ish during that time and remember it like yesterday. Never sat well with me and I lost a lot of respect for Metallica back then. The way he treated one of their own, during one of the lowest points in Staley's short life, speaks volumes as to the kind of person Hetfield is. I realize there are probably going to be a few Metallica super fans that will get their panties in a knot about this post, but it is what it is.
He was angry with Layne, Metallica and AiC were meant to tour together in 95, but they had to cancel because of his addiction problems, everyone was pissed at Layne. Plus a tad petty to be mad about something someone said over 27 years ago

He did do a good job and not even in his prime. Phil’s singing voice in his prime was amazing. He really did a number on it over the years. I never cared for any time James tried to sing. Anything after the black album for me was way too sold out. The dude is not a singer. Vocalist yes. Singer, no. Layne certainly is unique though! He was amazing! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
Love this so much! Why would you even try to cover a song you know you can't nail even when practicing in the studio? Amazing performance by Layne. Wish I could travel back and attend that show.

@@stephenhughes5156 No. I’m not talking about his Cowboys From Hell days. It’s widely established that, as he put it, once his “balls dropped” he couldn’t sing things like Cemetery Gates anymore and thus had to evolve into his style on Vulgar Display of Power. I’m talking about being able to scream in general. If you watch the Pro-shot live version of This Love, you can see how well he’s able to scream. I think the Superjoint Ritual albums blew his voice. When you listen to the “Caught Up in the Gears of Application” album, though it sounds phenomenal, he can no longer sing like he used to. Even his live shows now. One of the biggest voice's of all time and so many f*ckers hate on the dude but have know idea how talented he really was.
RIP Layne Staley!!!
Who, exactly, has ever hated on Layne Staley? I have never heard anything negative about him as a performer.
Wait…. There are people hating on Layne Staley?? Where?
@@EvantheEvolve that’s what I want to know!
Layne is totally in a league of his own such power and emotion he conveys into his performance and vocals RIP Layne

Got to meet him in Austin, in 91,they were opening for Extreme.
There's a hole in my fart that can only be filled by poo.
How was he ?
@@kushall3515 while on stage he was good, but after their set he was walking through the crowd, I stopped him and shook his hand, but he looked pretty out of it.
Hard to envision them opening for Extreme.
I agree with you 100!👌 Terrible!! 🤨 Then sing his song???😨🤨🤨 Nah
I think Alice in Chains cancelled their entire tour with Metallica, still James doing that was dumb!
Layne......... "The voice" unique & wonderful for the eternity..............💜🎤🎙️👻🕊️✨!!!!!!.
Layne 😢no one could come close R.I.P. my sweet angel 😢❤
There is only one…no substitutions 🖤
You said it @Liss Maranto🥰👌👏👏👏👏👏👏⚘
James is also the dude that made fun of Layne on stage about his addiction…. Ugh the irony
True he has no right to be singing his songs
Ya especially since James had a major coke problem. So ya the irony of it all.
He was angry with Layne, Metallica and AiC were meant to tour together in 95, but they had to cancel because of his addiction problems, everyone was pissed at Layne. Plus a tad petty to be mad about something someone said over 27 years ago
@@DevinLatulippe I already know the story. Blah blah blah. Petty or not, it was super lame for James to do that. And Lars named his son Layne. All fake to me but hey who am i
@@NOMAAM1970 Nah. He never did coke. That was Lars.
Phil Anselmo is the best to take a crack at Would? Peace from a fellow SOUTHERN MAN!!!
It's a voice so unique, that nobody could ever recreate it.
Saw them at Lollapalooza when this first came out. Was my favorite song then and is my favorite song now. Their live version was incredible. Unforgettable.
Maynerd from Tool.Comes close.
Yep the only one I think
That's what makes people like them legends
gotta love maynard
It’s also really cool how both of them were friends
Not close. Hits the same notes but that doesn’t mean it’s close.
The man was unique
I keep re-watching this! 🙏💕
Layne was on another level and no one can match that PERIOD!!
Damn 😔😔😔 I miss Layne so much 😭❤️🥰
There's only one Layne Staley 🙏😭😭😭😭
Layne you are truly Missed ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
When i try to sing along to this part i cough 😂😂 love u layne ❤️
🤣🤣🤣🤣
He was truly one of a kind! That Phil Anselmo one is dope tho because he's always been a legit fan of Alice in chains since forever
Definitely one of a kind!👌🥰
phil did a good job tho
Phil sucks
Phil is good, but overall an overrated nazi
Not even close
@@daniellysohirka5079 you know it shouldn't be exactly like Layne right? He did it his way
He did do a good job and not even in his prime.
one of the most all time amazing vocalist ever
The harmony between Layne and Jerry are some of the absolute greatest of all time.
Rest in peace, great one.
Love this so much! Why would you even try to cover a song you know you can't nail even when practicing in the studio? Amazing performance by Layne. Wish I could travel back and attend that show.
Rip Lane Staley the vocal monster!
Love Layne Staley. No one can replicate his voice. So much in his voice. No one can do it
I saw AIC open for Van Halen in Shreveport Louisiana in December of 91. I can without a doubt tell y'all Layne was a beast. His vocals rumbled the concrete of the walls and floor. I'm not even bulls******. He was in a league all his own. AIC was ( and still is imo) a phenomenal band. RIP Layne. RIP Mike.
RIP. Layne. One and only.
Honestly for Jerry to still be friends with or never confront James for running his mouth and making fun of Layne, Jerry's own band mate that's kind of messed up
I'm pretty sure they've talked about it and forgave him for that . Even though it was messed up James said that bout Layne but in order to be at peace ya gotta let go
Alice In Chains died w/Layne. His voice made that band. No one can do his remarkable voice justice
It’s kinda 50/50, Jerry wrote most of them songs but Layne’s voice made them worthwhile.
Often imitated, never duplicated.
No one will ever be able to sing it like him. My heart catches in my throat anytime I hear his voice. None of the other singers produced that reaction.
Yeah there’s a lot more of a pronounced screaming in Layne’s version, and it was quite high as well.
Definitely *very* original and powerful
Layne was ONE OF A KIND!!👌🥰
Layne had his own way of phrasing that no one can touch.
Layne was a badass 🤘😎🤘
He sure was!!👌 A true Legend!! A voice that can never be replicated ⚘
And that's why we still miss you
i love all these guys !!! but i love Layne Staley the most !!! thanks for the music Sir !!!
Just like Kurt Cobain…total legends that no one can sing like. Man, I really miss these guy’s.
Cobain was terrible singer, but Layne was damn great👍
@@ssbilly3238 lol, might not as great as Layne but he wasn't terrible
@@xxLonniExx lol yes he was....Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Andrew "Andy" Wood, Scott Weiland and Eddie Vedder were great, I mean really great, but Cobain was not at all on their level
@@ssbilly3238 I will never understand why people have the need to compare an artist with other artists as a quality measurement. No doubt that there's always better one but that's not the point. Art is about what speaks and moves you and in NO WAY Kurt sounds terrible to my ear. Never.

He didn’t technically know how to sing, but the outcome is decent.
I doubt anyone can fuck up the vocal in his way and sounds as great as he did.
No body can hit it like Layne but appreciate the effort man ..🤘 mad respect for trying because Layne's notes and vocals are hard to even try to recreate

So true!!
Phil can do no wrong in the vocal department..dude is a Swiss army knife of metal
I just want people to know his voice was already declining fast when he did that performance. And I love Phil Anselmo.
@@1Deep43VA What are you talking about it? His Down style is awesome. A lot different to CFH style, but it's awesome in its own way.
@@stephenhughes5156 I’m talking about his voice being destroyed. If you can’t tell you can’t tell.
@@1Deep43VA Yes but are you saying that because he is not singing in the same way he did in CFH/VDoP era? He changed his style. Sure, you could say that it was because his voice was 'destroyed'. But I think it's also just because he is in a different stage of life, singing a different style of music. In any case, it sounds awesome to me.
He used to be able to have his voice echo through a stadium, now his voice can go no higher than a whisper (I’m being facetious)
Again, I’m not hating. I love Phil and I still love his new albums. But his voice is not the same as it was during Far Beyond or Reinventing the Steel.

They supported suicidal tendencies back in late 90s in Australia. Opened up with them Bones. Up the front with the misses still today. To hear Layne live was another experience. I always rated a singer by live rather than studio with effects. Festival Hall
