Interesting question; I wouldn't do it as a strict particle effect. I'd combine a low res base sprite (low res because a blurry effect might help to convey the haze of heat) of a stream of lava. Apply a Sine behaviour to the lava to have it pulse/recede/grow; then create 2 particle systems of small white particles, one for the top edge of the lava and one for the bottom, a high generation rate, low speed, and then an x-axis spread spanning the length of the lava. Top edge particle system would have a negative gravity applied to it to have the sparks float upwards, lower one would use a standard gravity. Just thinking it through, haven't tried it, but I should sometimes. Thanks for the question!
