Hi. Good recommendations. As you say, for many households who have a Mac Mini as a family computer, the base M4 is a killer deal, and there is no need to look further. There are some great external drives to boost storage for family members, and each member could plug their own external drive in when they use the Mac Mini for privacy and more space-so 256GB is the optimum choice for base users. The M4 Pro is now so good that it may even be viable for pro users, while the M3 was more suited to semi-pro workloads. The Mac Mini is undoubtedly the best desktop machine for the majority of non-gamers.
You can use one big external SSD fir the whole family using different user accounts and the option to encrypt the data for more security, no one can access another user’s data. You don’t need to keep separate drives and replacing them, just log out and in with another user. You also have iCloud storage for each user.
A couple of points. If you use external storage, you cannot use cloud services on the external drive unless you boot from it. So no OneDrive, Dropbox or iCloud Also, if you boot from the external drive, you will not get Apple Intelligence, which may not be a bad thing

I'm considering a new computer (mainly laptop), and have started to look at laptops. Just by accidence, I discovered that the Mac keyboard has a layout similar to the old Thinkpad keyboards: with the Fn key where the Ctrl key "should be". As a touch typist using the Ctrl-key a lot (e.g., Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, but more importantly in math typesetting tools, Ctrl+m for carriage return, etc), the Mac keyboard layout is more or less a no-go: my left pinkie can easily reach the Ctrl-key on standard Windows keyboards, but reaching the Fn-key is much more difficult: I need to twist my pinkie in an impossible way. Using the ring finger to reach the Fn-key doesn't work either -- the ring finger is too long. Question: is it possible to re-program the keys on the Mac keyboard so that the Fn key and the Ctrl key can be switched?
Yes you can reprogram some keys from the buit-in settings in MacOs. For more complex remap of any keys, you can use a free program call Karabiner-Elements

Someone please explain to me, why DO PCs still mostly use USB-A? If USB-C is is so much better in every way, why do motherboards always have like 4 USB-A ports and hardly any USB-C? I never understood it.
Because of the amount if usb a devices that pcs still use
@@nickram8882so stop making USB A devices. Why does Logitech still so heavily rely on USB A? Doesn't make sense unless there is a financial incentive.
@@elmarcentralexactly too much people still own devices that only have usb a, most system integrators like hp and dell refuse to put only type c ports so most users have an abundance of usb a over type c ports
Legacy devices. Some entity/businesses still uses XP even lol
If want the Mac Mini-M4 Pro for future proof and apple intelligence but mainly - what is a good level for storage? How many gigabytes ? Appears you can later update SSD .
Right now feel I need mostly for work and max of 3 work apps running simultaneous
1.MICROSOFT WORD
2.Notes with /screenshot capturing
(Maybe SLID APP)
3. Video playback of UA-cam or something like Live video meeting on doximity, , and maybe one other web page for referral, lookup any questions or further info such as an AI PAGE SUCH AS PERPLEXITY-
Doesnt seem like that demanding and need it to work well with APPLE VISION PRO-
Is base model pro with 256 GB enough or If going to upgrade what would be most important upgrade to go with the mac mini M4 pro
I
M4 Pro with 20GPU will be 48Gb upgrade worth it for Resolve editing and color grading?
Excellent information. Mine was supposed to arrived today! I will use it as a testing environment for my programming projects.
Awesome! Hope you enjoy it!
I have a question. Other people have suggested an external drive instead of purchasing a larger drive inside. My question is how does Time Machine work with using the inside drive and an external drive. I would like to find a video that explains how one sets up a time machine drive to cover both the internal and external drive.
It's a standard thing for TM to do. On my iMac right now I have TM backing up three storage units (internal SSD, two external SSD.)
60Hz monitor refresh rate is old tech. M4 Pro with Thunderbolt 5 will support forthcoming displays with high refresh rate. This is especially important for anyone used to ProMotion for adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz on MacBook or iPhone pro.
Great review! Concise and on point
Thanks for watching!
What computer did you edit your video on? Was it fast enough?
My primary need is an audio production machine. However, I’m thinking about starting a podcast or a UA-cam channel or something for musicians.
I bought a 2014 mac mini for $50 at a surplus store. Id say that is worth it for light browsing
Great to see Cyberpunk benches.
Native version for sure will be fully playable at high settings and 1080p resolution. Exactly what I am looking for.
Like your video mate! Just curious, what are the preferred specs for 4K H.264 editing with some colour grading and a couple of tittle layers on Davinci Resolve?
⚠️
Just bought an Insta360 x4(4K + 4K = 8K) and Ace Pro 2 which can do 8K also…but I’m not a professional, just want to record quality family footages on the lake etc. I currently have Final Cut Pro, do you think I need the same spec Mac Mini as yours? Or base model?
Thanks!
I'm looking to switch to mac and my primary use is Lightroom. I'm assuming the pro would be the best choice?
For lightroom I feel the regular M4 should be good enough
How big are your Raw files? And with Adobe products always buy more RAM.
Oof the temptation!
What are the best Thunderbolt 3 and 4 external SSDs for Macs?
Samsung Shield T7
Hi Matthew, great video. Could you tell me the difference in time for rendering in Davinci Resolve with the MacBook M1 Pro?
The M4 Pro version is so good that it's driving me to just go for it and skip waiting for the Mac Studio M4 Max. I'll give it 3 months and see. Might get the base model as a streaming device.
I mean you already know how the M4 Max will perform so its really up to whether you want to spend more money on the studio and if you're cool with M4 Pro performance.
@@MatthewMoniz I've spent on building a PC back in 2019 that cost me like $4,300, and more than sure the base M4 would outshine it. Rendering one wedding that is 4K@24fps 10bit 4:2:2 of around 4 hours it took like 8-9 hours to render due to lacking HEVC encoders and doing it on a software level. Rendering times between the M4 Pro and M4 Max can be pretty steep with such long videos.
I might buy the base model first as a streaming device, test it, and see if I like it. If I like it then I'll go for the Pro model and give the base to my assistant photographer/videographer in my tiny production company. Thanks for your great review!
My workflow is mainly graphic design & Sketchup. How does the base model compares to my current i7-6700k, 32GB Ram with RTX2070?
Can’t wait to get my hand on one. Looks like I’ll have big year of content creation coming and I’m really gonna need more power and efficiency.
Nice video, good info. Now I need to research a new monitor suitable for photo and video editing.
Anyone have any suggestions?
So I am planning to buy it with 32GB/256GB
For all of your benchmarks of the Mac Mini Pro, are these tested on a Mac Mini Pro with 16 gb of unified memory or more than that?
I list the specs of the device im reviewing in the video but its 48GB of RAM.
I want to see a performance graph between an M4 mini and a Mac SE, my first Mac.
If you have the chance to get the Mac Studio M1 Max for the same price of The New Mac Mini M4 with 512gb, what do you think is better ? considering that the Studio M1 Max is 3 years old
Hey Matthew , can u tell me how is mac mini m4 base model for video editing 4k
Do you think 256gb is enough?
I think its enough if you buy an external drive to go with it
@ Nice video! Thanks!

Please clarify my doubt
I am software developer and my requirement for mac mini is software development
( Mobile app development )
After installing required softwares for software development,
around 150 GB is used ( total including system, OS etc )
So approx 100 GB and 350 GB will be empty in case of 256 and 512 gb variants.
Ram will be 16 gb
My doubt is
Will there be difference in performance and speed during development and other usage for mac mini m4 ?
My concern is, why to waste more money for 512 GB variant, instead 256 may be sufficient.
Please clarify, This will really help me for buying decision.
I don't require mac for any storage.
I can buy SSD for it.
But performance and speed is MUST.
@@shubhamyeole9077 You should always have more than 10% of free available disk space. Otherwise your system will run slow. You can buy an external disk and install some programs on it (it's now possible with MacOs Sequoia, i haven't tested it yet) but i dont know if we can run some programing tools like Xcode on external drive given the fact that they need to be on the main drive. They will run slower tho on external drive. Keep also in mind that the base mac models with 256Gb and 512Gb have slower disk compare to the 1To and above.
@@shubhamyeole9077 do you know what with macOS sequoia you can instal apps in external ssd?
Do you have recommendations for a very good monitor that is under $1000?
Macmini pro went from 1200 to 2100 for newer chip?
They should have put all the ports on the bottom.
LOL
I always used a rack on my older Mac Minis for better cooling, as I could have a small fan to push the heat away from the base, which would now be vertical. I recommend that solution if you use the power button often, which I never do, even on my MacBooks! It is a first-world problem flexed by the usual suspects looking to bash Apple.
2:48 In Apple Store the Mac Mini M4 Pro has different specs than you mentioned. In Apple Store it has 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU
the M4 Pro starts at 12-core cpu and 16-core GPU but you have the option to spec it with 14-core cpu and 20-core gpu for more money.
I ordered m4 pro model but I think I over expended. I have doubt about using it or change to m4.
I got the Mini M4 Pro because I needed a way to play strategy games and I’m getting an Xbox to play everything else.
Is the 14 core pro worth the 200 upgrade over the 12?
Yes we need to what to buy a Mac mini pro or a Mac Studio 2 max chip because its ruffled same price
I have a MacBook Pro 16 with M1 Pro and 16GB of ram, in davinci I do badly to move between the timeline with 4k editing and some titles, do you think that with the basic Mac Mini M4 pro model, can you improve this experience?
Were the gaming tests done in the m4 or m4 pro?
About Cinebench R24 test: my macbook air M1 8 GB- single-core =110, how it possibly that MacBook Pro 16 get the same result, 110?
The exact specs you have, would you be able to do 4k editing with some After Effects work like roto scoping and creating alphas?
Absolutely!
I have a macbook pro(2020). I do light editing. Im thinking about getting the mac mini but i dont onwo if i should get the the M4 or pro
Would the m4 pro be a great upgrade from late 2014 intel 5k retina iMac?
For mainly Lightroom and WoW, would the base mini handle it no problem, or is getting the base m4 pro the way to go?
I have an M1 Mac Mini with 16gb of unified memory. It is still more than capable of running Lightroom. I also opted for the 512gb disk version, of which just under half is left. I have office365, LR, PS, LibreOffice, and Photomatix Pro installed. Whichever model you go for, I would recommend the 512gb disk version.
Base Mini can handle WoW but you'll have to drop the settings to 1080P for good framerates. Base Mini is also more than fine for lightroom
@@colinstock325 thats good to know, thanks!
@@MatthewMoniz awesome, i was unsure whether only 16gb ram would be enough for Lr. Thank you!
Can you use an eGPU on it? Also all these high numpers are not the base model.
No you cant use eGPUs with any Apple computer that uses their new Apple Silicon chips.
I’m dying to see if this thing can truly handle AAA games at 1080.60 like advertised
If its built for apple silicon then yes if not and it has to be translated not so much. It honestly also depends on the game
@ apple silicon being arm…it should, if not then its a software issue since Android flagships from 2022 can fully run windows and pc games via an emulator (and a beefy phone cooler)
And what about the fan noise for the M4 Pro under heavy load ? Are the fans noticable ?
I posted the Fan results in the video but the loudest they get under load is 44db which is audible but not loud.
@@MatthewMonizwould the base M4 be quieter?
@@FilipCools I'd imagine it would be slightly quieter but 44db is quite low already for the M4 Pro. For context the MacBook Pro 16 M4 Max can get up to 58db which is as high many gaming laptops. The Mac Mini is a VERY quiet machine.
I'd be curious to see what gaming performance is like for the base m4 pro that is 12 core
Guess it’s time to upgrade from my 2007 iMac.
Torn between this and the 16gb ram M2 MB air.
Did you use Parallels 20 to play the games?
No crossover
look at that size its ah fucking beast🔥🔥🔥
i want to see if 14 inch binned M4 Pro MacBook Pro performance
Is the built-in speaker good?
No its not. Its low, muffled and really just there so you can hear things until you get proper speakers
Care to show how the speaker sounds? Thanks.
it sounds like ass. Its just there so you can hear stuff until you plug in normal speakers
I still don't understand why you wouldn't add League of Legends to the game list, since it's a game with one of the largest player bases in the world, and it has a native Mac version.
LoL will run on a potato its so old that any computer with a igpu can handle it. There's no point
yeah, but can it run mminecraft with shaders?
AND 200 MODS???
Does M4 or M4 Pro Mac Mini support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 to allow 2000 MB/s read/write speeds? Wondering if Samsung T9 is worth the extra price over Samsung T7 external SSD.
They both do
I have an MB Pro M1 Max as well as an MB Pro M2 Max. I was thinking about trading/selling my M1 Max to get the Mac mini 4 Pro with 14‑core CPU, 20‑core GPU, 16-core. Do you think it's worth the move? I edit videos perfectly fine with my M2 Max but unsure if I would benefit.
I think It would be THE daily use laptop if it did support my current monitor set up which is 2x 1440p 144hz and 4k 120hz
I tried rocking 3 monitors I couldn't do it. What type of work are you doing?
@@MatthewMoniz Just used to the 4k workflow, would probably get 2 more 4k monitors
There are bad phone chargers that use more than 0.5W when not in use

Ive used luminar Neo on the base M3 MacBook Air and it ran fine. It will run even better on base M4
@MatthewMoniz thank you that's made my mind up then
Would it be good for designing (Photoshop , Blender ) ?
Why is that you get 2000score for M4max and i have seen other getting 2100?
I think the thermal paste cant handle the TDP on your laptop,
We had issues with the M3max already and when we repasted with quality thermal paste, the score jumped from low 1600‘s to over 1700.
You said M4pro has 3 screen 60K, does the base model m4 have the 3 screen 60K as well, or something less and what? Thanks
M4 can do 3 displays as well but instead of 3 at 6k 60hz. It's 2 at 6k 60hz and 1 at 5K 60hz
how do you connect 2(3)screens, 2(3)ssd disks, webcam, micro, ext loudspeaker,..

Wondering if you can do a Lightroom Classic export test?
mate, how much storage is left behind in the base model of mac mini SSD with some space being occupied by pre-installed os and apps?
macOS = 19gb > system data is 8gb I am using 32gb total with only a handful of small programs installed.
fortunately there are 2x128gb instead of 1x256gb
Why are getting low views to you video bro? i think you deserver more view like 200K or more to be honest.
Does external egpu work with if needed
Dont ever buy the 256 storage.... Everr. Apple caches a lot of system files and it takes up most of the storage also after installing any software you need that storage is done.
What is the hdmi version ?
