Daily Driving A Welded Differential
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 сер 2024
- Welding your differential is a cheap and popular way to ensure that your drift missile goes sideways with a punch of the throttle and full opposite lock. But away from the circuit, what is life really like daily driving a car with a welded diff?

@@danietkissenle I was thinking about welding my drive shaft in to match my welded diff just as well right?
I just welded the diff on my friends electric wheel chair, he was getting stuck on polished floors.

Going to weld the diff on a FWD.

Didn't even mention the most important part. STAY ON THE THROTTLE AND KEEP IT LOADED IN PARKING LOTS. Don't let the axles rack back and forth by being in neutral while turning, be in gear and lightly on throttle so the tires slip instead of twisting your shit to pieces.
LMAO
Smh
So what you've done is give me yet another reason to take the racing line while daily driving. Done.
@TheCarPassionChannel so u tellin me Greg that u wanted one more reason to take the racing line on daily driving ?
Yo
I agree
Wasnt he looking for the apex?
Funny story, a kid at my work bought his first car for 7,000$, it was 350z with a welded diff. I told him it's not a good idea since he just got his license and the rear end would tend to kick out, but he knew better than me. Needless to say, 6 days later he drove his old Subaru to work, I was surprised so I asked why. The rear end of his 350z kicked out on him and he ran it into a curb. The passenger side of his car was toast and wheel were bent under the car terribly lmao. The insurance totaled it and didn't give him anything for the car. DONT WELD YOUR DIFF NEW DRIVERS.
Lucky it was a curb he hit. Could've been much worse, coulda plowed into a school bus, or pedestrians.
Never tell insurance when you crash your own car like that lol.
He was a spoiled rich kid, He thought he knew everything. it was karma.
it was a 350z, not a mustang
wait, you said the 350 was his first car, but then said he drove his old subaru to work... Not trying to be rude, just confused lol
OOOOR.... Just install a electronic locking differential. Now you can lock and unlock at the flick of a switch.
I doubt teens/younger people in general have the money for that. And it'll be more expensive to replace an electronic one then to buy another open diff and weld it again.
Never heard of that! I'll have to research.

All ready dan
I welded my Jeep's rear diff. Other than tire noise in tight turns it was barely noticeable for normal driving. Off-road it was a whole new experience, it was able to do some stuff in 2wd that it could barely pull off in 4wd before.
As someone who drives a mid-size pickup truck with a welded diff and oversize tires, other than an occasional screech and loss of traction during heavy rain, it's not a problem at all. Fun as hell in the snow.
How does it feel on the highway?
You forgot "Don't get caught by the police" because welding a diff is against the law in the UK.
David Halliday I pretty sure it’s illegal everywhere haha. But it would be your own fault that you got pulled over in the first place. They couldn’t pull you over for having a welded diff because they would never know unless they saw you in a parking lot.
What isn’t illegal there ?
David Ehlers everything that's legal
WilliamsLeee
Yes - but those who weld diffs are usually quite eager to show off their exquisite driving skills and to "decorate" their cars accordingly. I think any policeman worth his salt will check a crashed ricer for illegal mods - like sawn off springs, cleared out catalysts or welded diffs.
Some of these vids should be called "an idiot's guide to idiot motoring", really.
UK left nazis at work. It's ok, let more religious fanatics in. That will surely fix your problems. Meanwhile...even in the shitty US I have no cats, stupid loud exhaust, high HP mayhem cars.
2:50 it's the ricer miata!
Chris Cole there was a few haggard garage clips in there. Orion's Lexus was shown twice.
That doesn't look riced. Maybe my eyes need adjusting though.

I hope no one is dumb enough to watch this video and actually think welding your first car or only or daily driver a good idea.
Kyle Wong yup, Can't imagine navigating a parking with a welded diff..
Spool is essentially the same thing and many people daily drive with a spool.. Barking the tires every time they turn, not the brightest people.
In my 1945 Chev pu it was a bad idea. One day of that was enough. In my 1966 SS 396 that I turned into a stockcar it worked great. Still have the trophies to prove it. This was all in the 70's. I still have the 45 pu and the 66 motor.
Exactly!
You're right; it's a _GREAT_ idea. Now then, just need a car.
Light poles here I come!!
daily drive my welded diff 240sx it can be scary in the rain you just have to take it slow and it will be fine
Dear Car Throttle,
just kidding, your video's just make me happy and would like to have a gopro for this summer please keep making videos and have a great day 👍

You guys are like buzzfeed for car "enthusiasts".
Koshunae but car throttle are decent and dont hate men
That's how buzzfeed started.
They are passing forward the 'jokes' about other people cars(mustang, bmw, honda etc) so the hate actually began
lol even my dad had bmw hate.
Bullfeed* here the politically crazy view enforcers come.
Nobody is willing to weld the diff on my Vespa.
lol, no 12-B would own a Vespa.
Too many gravel roads at FLW anyhow.
You new age gearheads are funny man, I've had all kinds of cars with spools. My Nova has a full spool and tall gears but still get 20k miles put on it a year. This has been done for years and years before drift racing.
Car throttle, you guys are awesome. Keep making videos. Love the channel.
Do all mustang drivers have welded diffs?
Nope, the diff is just as useful as a rock when it comes to cornering, acceleration, crowd control, etc.
In all seriousness though, it's because of the sheer torque of the mustangs engine. If you put a diff on that has a lot of play it will destroy it the second you step on the gas

Ollie Young based on inductive reasoning, yes
I'm welding my Bugatti diff

Hi I shared your videos to all my friends.Thank you so much,me and my dad didn't know how to fix our old car now we know to fix our car
"it's game over if your diff is full of metal fragments"
As opposed to welded bevel gears inside it?
Yes. Because metal fragments stuck in the ring/pinion gear will destroy the part of the diff still required genius

I hope so

Your moms car is front wheel drive. Back seat was nice, stereo is decent.

Triston Charge ooooooooooooooo
My friend welded the diff on his Jeep, now he can drift like a pro!
You are the best I watch you every day more than 3 or 4 videos I love you
Also some real tips:
Dont use wide sticky tires on the rear, Engine braking must be approached with caution, You need to adjust the geometry and setup of the car to compensate for the lack of turn in, Have half shafts ready for when they brake. *DD a welded diff for 2 years, now on my second car with a weldy*
So, if I weld the diff on my 318i I'm going to have a shit ton of costs in the future compared to leaving it open diff?
Not a shit ton, second hand half shafts cost between 30 and 50$. And if you dont give massive shocks to your rear end (wheel hop), they should last just fine. If you intend to actually drift the car, this *IS* a must. You will fall in love with the control it gives you.
why do half shaft break? i mean is it from drifting (clutch kicks etc) or from the skipping tire which is trying to grip? do they break often when most driving is just normal driving?
meh I was gonna weld the diff but I'm going to have to trade for a diesel fwd car
car is too hungry, drinks more than a 520i wich is weird
Its mostly tire skipping, like standing almost still and flooring it in second gear. Never broke something when driving normal and did not break anything mid drift as far as I remember. You should let go of the gas when you feel your rear end vibrating, thats wheel hop and that what did in all my half shafts.
OH COME ON! I love these giveaways, but seriously, why always Facebook?! You have many subscribers without an account there!
should be on the CT site
Yeah totally not touching facebook with this
I fully agree with stig.

I daily my 86 Suzuki sidekick lifted 4wheeler with a welded diff, it had a rear locker that broke so I just welded it. hardly noticed on the street but on the dirt it was awesome.
You guys are awesome, keep up the good videos😄
I welded the diff on my FWD MK2 VW Golf and I still can't do mad skids, i've even added loads of drift stickers for extra HP but still no luck.
Any tips from anyone in the know would be great.
Thanks.
Put some McDonalds trays underneath the rear tyres and then apply the handbrake; works EVERY time.
HA HA HA HA HA, good one HA HA HA

I got banned from my local track day for doing that. They said it was dangerous, LOL.
drive in reverse.
Leeroy Jones drift stickers don't get HP,you need more HP for your car,If it's the 90's and 80's fiesta then get more power with a turbo or a new engine,If you have a newer fiesta then you just need to loose weight

Awesome video man can't wait for more👍
i learn quite a bit from your vids love them!
I would never weld the Diff on my daily driver, Hell I can't even afford tires (neverthe less a full tank of gas) for the car I drive regularly. I would only do it with a project car that would sit in the garage for months on end until I remembered it existed
haggard and ricer miata in the video!!!! :D
Love all the information very detailed!!!!
3:21 here in Sweden we have something called epa/a trakor. It is offten a car without the rear roof, and it can only go 30kmh. You must be 15 Years old or older to driver it.

So cars started out with no diff, then open diffs, then these fancy limited-slips and Torsens. And now back to effectively no diff?
And not stupid at all, and not dangerous at all.
The drive shafts must likin' it a lot too!
Living on the alps, that would be very fun to see somebody whit his welded shaft making some hairpin turn, he would be not stupid at all, no no... ^^
Only for drifting I guess, doing it on a daily driver would be stupid and a death wish.
Toatally agree, but you are watching "CarThrottle" who has no idea
I had a welded diff daily driver and it's not a death wish if you're an experienced driver. Way better traction during the winter as well.
Brawndo
I've had plenty of daily drivers whith welded diff.
It's perfect if you want to learn about car behavior.
The good thing is that your car will behave pretty much the same at any speed.
Open diffs work ok for high speed but not in low speed, and depending on power it can be very interesting. A welded diff dosent have this problem.
It's cheap contra buying a real one which some times only lock like 30 to 50%.
cool seining that Volvo EPA tractor on Car throttle, it's just a Swedish thing and seining this on something this big is awesome

Epa faan!
Would prefer a LSD :)
Have to be on LSD to tell people to do this.
love both types
how about the best of both worlds, a differential with both a gear type limited slip AND a locker you can activate with a switch.. (the Ram Power Wagon has this setup in the rear end)
gonna need it.
I had a cusco full locked diff as a daily on a r33 skyline it was so predictable I could drift 3lanes gutter to gutter 3rd gear speedo reading 150km no problems. LSD is for wimps. Lock it then compare it you'll never want to drive another car without a full locker again. Nothing compares to a full locked diff as long as you have some decent power to back it up.. I had 230kw atw,I sold the car on the first test drive.. I had the buyer looking out of the passenger window facing the oncoming cars ahead. He said stop and didn't argue and gave me 15k for the car plus he didn't even bargain on the price I was asking. Lock the CVNT all the way & enjoy life.
Cool video- Love it!

For any non-swedish reading this - A traktor is a car that bas been chopped up and has had its gearboxes (s, because the tractor needs 2 of them to be legal.) The A-traktor makes 30 km/h, but is still popular among the kids due to being legally drivable at the age of 15. Popular cars that are converted into A-traktor are Volvo 740 and 940.
The A-traktor is featured in the video at 3:21
EDIT: Also featured at 3:50.
There's three of them, a red 142, a black 745 and a red 240

Great idea!! I think I'll weld my car's differential. Wait... I don't own a car yet......
Weld your shoelaces together
I think I'd rather go the Clarkson route... MORE POWERRRRR!!!!!!
For a nice one tire fire?
+NGC1433 Who says I'd use a fully locked diff instead? There's something like a limited slip diff for a reason. ;)
Nigga u stupid af, this is a cheap mod, almost free to start drifting and you already talking about adding power and a LSD?? Its clearly that u dont own a car and if you do its a boring sedan that never gonna see a real car part that is not stock.
This video is about welding open diffs on cheap cars. LSD's and POWAHH!!!111 have nothing to do with welding nor cheap.
I'm no nigga, nigga. Besides I drive a fine BMW e46 (hatchback) which has a LSD from factory (3.38 ratio in my case). Owned an Alfa Romeo 156 (sedan) before that and a Lancia Delta (hatchback) before that.
Also I meant locked diff earlier... my bad. Oh and it's a cheap mod but if you ever decide against it after you did that mod... it'll cost you a new friggin' diff. I'd rather add more power for that money as that'll give me more fun sideways as well as in a straight line. ;)
Great vid !
Loving the videos!!
so could they just buy a locking diff then un-lock it later?
