Pros and cons daily driving a Jeep xj with a welded differential

- Lockers are expensive and open diffs suck-a-duck off-road, so for chump-cheap traction, it’s hard to beat the age-old method of simply welding up your differential spider gears to create a mini spool. But is a welded diff for you? Well, in our best Jeff Foxworthy voice: If your welds are weaker than year-old bubblegum stuck under a table, a welded diff might not be for you. If you want your Jeep to have street manners rivaling a British butler, a welded diff might not be for you. If your axleshafts are as spindly as a steroid freak’s legs and your tires as huge as his biceps, a welded diff might not be for you. If you’re as good a mechanic as Tiger Woods is a faithful husband, a welded diff might not be for you.
So with all that said, we think you can guess what we’re getting at. Welded diffs can offer cheap traction, but you should only take on the project if stuff like disassembling your axle and laying down some clean, well-penetrating welds is in your repertoire. Likewise, since you’ll be creating a spool, keep in mind your street driving will be compromised to some degree with chirping rear tires around corners and a slightly diminished turning radius. The welded diff will also put added strain on your axleshafts, so keep your tire size within limits if shaft survivability is important to you. Finally, we really don’t recommend welding your front diff. Keep the welded diffs out back and pop for a real auto or selectable locker up front.

I've daily driven my Toyota welded front and rear for a decade, I have no real complaints other than tire wear.
Do you drive in the snow on the road with that?
@@vinnykurnizi7131 I do
@@cadilakisrodcustom perfect, if you have manual locking hubs in the front, Do you leave one side unlocked ever with that welded front diff for snow?
@@vinnykurnizi7131 yes, I only spin one hub unless I need to do something stupid lol
@@cadilakisrodcustom Thank you very much my daily pathfinder is now getting welded front end soon lol. Suddenly even more unstoppable
Good info at the right time. Thanks.
I had my Dana 30 welded and after 2 months a axle shaft broke on me I have replaced it with a dana35 welded as well but I’m looking forward to getting my 8.8
Had a welded 12 bolt rearend under my K5.
Never broke the weld, but destroyed the pinion seal & bearings somehow. Perhaps it was the 40's on a half ton axle....😂
Love my 1tons I have now.
Good points Ronnie
This is one thing I am going to spend the money on a selectable locker.
I’m welding the rear diff, with locker in the front of my XJ, I drive it to work and back but no sharp turns or anything there, sharpest turn I take is parking lol.
Love the video thx what part wv u out of iam Parkersburg love go on ride with ya but mine just 3 inch 31 tire no lovers yet lol
Lockers
I’m near Morgantown
You think a stock 2.5 L jeep tj will be fine with 31’s bfg’s on a welded diff
Hey Ronnie u think 31s would ever break an axle? I mostly just trail ride and drank a lil bit lol...no monster hill climbs or pipelines...I do like to gouge on it every once in a while when I get a wild hair...think I’ll be alright?
You should be I drank a lot on 31s 😂
@@cherokeeronnie hahaha thanks man
You sir somehow asked my exact question detail for detail. 31s small lift, looking to lock both my diffs to make my offroadin stupid simple when i need to do it. I ride most my time so i dont mind losing some street ability. I just want my hot rod tractor to do even better. 98 jeep xj.
Bought a Jeep Wrangler with a bunch of mods, found out it had a welded rear diff on Dana 44's and snapped axle shaft twice lol I don't know what gears they re-geared it to..
Should say on it or do the math
I have a 96XJ I just bought for a daily driver and I had 31 inch tires on it with a 3 inch lift and I noticed that both rear wheels turn at the same time and it hops at low speed sharp turns and someone said it may be welded. Is there any other option other than it they may be welded? And how would I tell if the vehicle was manufactured with a limited slip differential from the factory? One more question.😊 if the original gears were welded, could I swap them out fairly easily with the factory set up? Appreciate anyone’s help as I am a newbie.
Jack up the rear tires in the air and spin a tire with your hand, if the other tire spins the opposite direction it’s an open diff, if it spins in the same direction it’s a lsd
I have a 98 wrangler 4 cyl that is strictly off-road toy. Would it be a bad idea to weld the front and rear diff? I’m tired of this 4wd that is only putting power to two wheels lol
I had a off road one no problems at all I was really hard on it
What a bout a welded front diff
And lsd in back
Whould it cause problems if only using 4wd when wheeling not daily
Xjs don’t have manual hubs so the diff always spins so if you tried to turn sharp it probably wouldn’t feel that great
im keen on doing this and using locking hubs to have one wheel drive when needed.
You had me at tire wear. It's a no no.
Hell did good for almost 3 years
Old rig. Soft blocky tires. Daily but ridiculous level off-road abuse with aftermarket axles but debating welding the read leaving front open. Not lifted much and don't turn sharp anywhere really. 33's on it.... Experienced driver just curious of the pros and cons. Dana 44 front and rear under this old dodge half ton
Why would you swap a Chrysler 8.25 out for a Ford 8.8? You gain very little in strength, not worth the trouble in my opinion, the swap would make more sense if you had a Dana 35 rear.
I’ve had good luck with the 8.8 and abuse
8.25 not so much
@@cherokeeronnie I have an 8.25 with stock shafts, 4.56 gears and a Spartan locker on 35s and it holds up great. I have beat on it pretty hard at the East Lynn trails.
welded diff is for a purely off road trail rig. not safe for on road use
Well darn drive mine all the time
Get a Hinda then if your scared 😱
