I am a MH nurse and can confirm this type of person is beyond difficult to deal with because, as you say, they have full control of their behaviour. People who have never worked in a prison or hospital environment think “to behave like this they must be ill” - nope, pure choice and free will. And to make the situation even more frustrating, when you try and provide the care they seek- there is resistance and abuse.
I have read your book - really interesting- thanks!

I don't for a second doubt what you're saying. I've gotten to that stage in life where _nothing_ you could tell me about people would surprise me. Fwiw though, for physical reasons, specifically ulcers from my feet to my knees (in the end, I _did_ actually lose one of my legs above the knee), I have, on occasion, really smelled, tbh, eye~wateringly bad! There have been occasions where I've unavoidably had to use public transport, or 'come to that', Accident & Emergency waiting areas, and let me tell you, the experience was Hellish, for everyone concerned! Obnoxious smells can literally bring people - let alone dogs - to the point of violence! I can tell you though, when you have leg ulcers that hurt e~ver~y _bit_ as much as they smell, being told "It's called A _Shower!_ ", or being sprayed down with 'Lynx' or 'Impulse' type products doesn't especially help ones' morale! (Before my own problems, I did once experience a similar situation 'from the other side', when an elderly, clearly homeless, woman got on the bus, and boy, yeah, was she 'minging'! Homeless or not, this wasn't on account of unwashed clothes, or even an unwashed body - you could smell the literal _rot!_ The poor woman was obviously quite conscious that she was 'offensive', not that the other passengers were about to leave her in any doubt! She only made it to the next stop before being 'vibed' off the bus, and the shame radiating from her was as evident as her odour. Had she not gotten off anyway, I suspect she would've been _put_ off, but I still regret not speaking up in her defence!)
Getting back to my _own_ story, and where it has some relevance to your comment, probably around this time I was hospitalized with septicaemia, and was put on intravenous antibiotics that unfortunately damaged my kidneys, requiring me to undergo dialysis. Then the fallback antibiotics had the weird effect of causing me to lose the use of my arms... you know those weeks when it seems like "you can't catch a break", lol?! I couldn't make wheelchair transfers, I couldn't eat, worst of all, I couldn't wipe my own backside... Having to ask for help with such activities was humiliating enough, but the worst part was (and it has to be said here, the individuals concerned were not going to be on 'Brain of Britain' anytime soon!), because my file said that, barring the obvious disability of my amputation, I was able~bodied, the nurse~carers (auxiliary nurses) _could - not - seem_ to get it into their heads that my arms really were like limp noodles, and I wasn't just playing some passive~aggressive game with them. I just feel _sooo_ lucky that my wife was still alive and could come in and help me with at least some of the basic tasks, and, in the end, get it across that this disability was 100% a real thing!
Still, given that I've seen (and in the end, had to come to the assistance of) paralyzed stroke patients who had dinner trays 'plonked' down in front of them, and then snatched away untouched on consecutive days, I really shouldn't have been too surprised at my treatment.
Let me say again, I'm not actually trying to contradict what _you're_ saying. I don't doubt for a second that there are people who get all kinds of weird kicks out of having people running around treating them like babies! Think of my reply more as a PSA to members of the public, or to often opinionated medical personnel who treat the patient's dossier as the Bible, while at the same time entirely dismissing the words out of the patients' mouths! (Just on the smell thing, necrotic or semi~necrotic flesh is not the only possible source of 'honestly aquired' repulsive odours; ill~fitting soma~, aka, colostomy~ bags, _legitimate_ urinary or faecal incontinence, or medications that, because of how they are metabolized, can cause body odour notwithstanding good personal hygiene practice, all come to mind, just 'off the top of my head'!
Anyway, apologies for the length of my, um, dissertation! (Never mind the Quality, just feel the Width 😁)

How do Sam, I'm sure I read somewhere that David originally had come from quite a successful career - I forget what his profession was but it must have nosedived spectacularly at some point to get to this stage. Shame the 2011 documentary was pulled - I have actually seen it and it was one of the most honest portrayals of life for prison officers out there.

I feel such sorrow that human beings can sink to that level. I have OCD myself it would not only vomit but would more then likely pass out . The funny thing is I did cat rescue and have dogs now and am used to dealing with animal waste But they would not do that unless they were sick or old. God bless you darling. Strangeways to put it mildly.

Worked in a care home in Liverpool where David Charlton was staying between 2019 and 2023.
Nothing much has changed for David. Still soiling his room, abusive to staff and racist.

I vaguely recall you from my many short stays in prison during the 90s mainly and I did indeed first taste prison in the mid 80s pre riots so I can confirm prison was so very much more civilised after riots and when they reopened strangeways fully following the riots it was a better place in every way including staff - I'm amazed still at some of the complaints etc some inmates came up with - holding up queue in the servery because they had not sent enough gravy once !! I often remember having to remind padmates that if they'd experienced prison 10 years earlier they'd not complaint today about such trivial issues - too many people suddenly acquire morals and rigid standards about wages despite never working outside prison !! - lastly although I always just accepted my time in prison mainly because I'd committed the wrong and I was caught and sent to jail - I quickly figured out which staff were approachable and would try their level best and a small minority of staff it was best not to need any interaction with - of all the many staff I got to know and have any dealings with over many short stays usually starting in strangeways I have to say there were many decent staff - including Mr Samworth who did have an interest in doing their job as best as possible and were just working people - mortgages to pay - kids to raise - the list goes on but they're only doing a job in a hostile workplace at times - I always saw this and never remember having any cause for upset or complaint - in the end after some good conversations with some staff I inevitably got to know due to being on same wing daily and playing cards with some staff or pool I realised they were just hardworking breadwinners supporting their families and only wanted to do their job - most staff overall are decent normal people !!

What sort of life did this guy have prior to prison? Can imagine he was raised poorly for his complex needs and abused. Interested to hear mate but not sure if that sort of thing is disclosed when people get sent to prison. Cheers mate!

So he claimed not to be able to walk but he could trash his cell and throw feces. Ok. I remember watching something with him on it and was nearly vomiting just seeing it

Hy there. Sam He wasn't born like this so his up bringing must of had some influence on him.dont get me wrong I have worked for Hmp.and have seen all this it wasn't pleasant by all means and there are those who revell in there own dirt attention seeking yes.some need medical intervention.if they don't want to be helped nothing will make them.i remember a one legged guy in a wheel chair demanding smokes.he was on his bell constantly in the end to save my sanity I slipped a roll up under the door.there are many like this in our prisons .if you don't have Empathy Patience and Endurance it's not the job for the faint hearted.i know😅
